Are you still looking for milk chocolate covered almonds? I saw some at Sam's Club (Member's Mark brand, which I think is maybe their house brand). They were available to sample and I thought of you
Aw, thank you for thinking of me!
So, one, I unfortunately can't really eat almonds anymore, they don't digest super well -- I can do almond butter but that's about it. But also, like, the point of the Milk Chocolate Almond rant was never that I couldn't find them, all else aside you can buy them online pretty easily. The issue is that it shouldn't be this hard to find them and it only is because as a culture we have lost the damn plot.
Like, I'm not mad Trader Joe's doesn't carry milk chocolate almonds, I'm mad that Trader Joe's, which infamously only carries one, two AT MOST types of any given foodstuff, had four -- NOW FIVE -- kinds of chocolate-covered almonds and NONE of them are milk chocolate. They have a "chocolate type coating" almond but they can't bring themselves to just dunk the damn things in milk chocolate.
And really I'm not even mad about that, I'm mad that it's because of the creepy orthorexic diet culture in this country that says once something is deemed "healthy" or "clean" it can never touch anything deemed "unhealthy" (or "dirty" though they never say that, they say "processed" or "artificial") ever again. I'm angry that we're so obsessed with thinness and "pure" eating that we can no longer allow almonds to touch milk chocolate because Almonds Good, Milk Chocolate Bad. Fuck forbid we have a moment of goddamn pleasure in this life that involves almonds. I'm angry that almost all "organic" or "natural" food stores will sell you a fifth of vodka, which if you drink it all at once can literally kill you, but not a can of Diet Coke, because Diet Coke is dirty.
SORRY ANON, I'm not yelling at you, you just triggered the yell reflex. I'm yelling, uh, near you, while still thinking it was very sweet of you to think of me.

How to follow a Mediterranean Greek diet
The Mediterranean diet naturally expands throughout the coastal countries of South Europe, North Africa and the Middle East but there are some small differences between their cuisines. So here I am writing specifically about the Greek version of the Mediterranean diet, known for its delicious, natural flavours and its significant health benefits.
Tumblr media
Eat daily:
Olive oil: the pillar, the liquid green gold of the Mediterranean Greek diet. Olive oil should be used ideally exclusively for all purposes. It's dressing salads, it's used in cooking and in fact it's traditionally what is used in frying too. Replace all types of oils, butter and margarine with olive oil even when making pastries. The only problem here is that outside of the Mediterranean basin olive oil can be pricey, however that's the foundation the diet is based on. If you are interested in following the traditional Greek diet for taste or health purposes, it is good to really incorporate olive oil in your daily cooking. If it’s not possible to afford buying olive oil all the time (although you could balance it out by not buying other oils and butter), a non-Greek-typical but equivalent alternative could be avocado oil. However, I doubt avocado oil or any other oil can remotely compare to olive oil in health properties, taste or in any other positive quality 🫒
Vinegar: Just like olive oil, vinegar is a very important ingredient and is also used in natural remedies However, it can hurt a sensitive GI tract if consumed in large portions. A little bit of it added to meals frequently is very healthy. Apple cider vinegar is also very loved and used in salads often 🍇
Vegetables: no portion can be too much (wild greens, garlic, onions, cauliflowers, cucumbers, eggplants, beets, peppers, spinach, artichokes, zucchini, peas, lettuce, the list never ends). Tomatoes and broccoli are recent additions to the Greek diet however they were integrated perfectly to the Greek cuisine. In general, all vegetables can be enjoyed freely with some moderation in the potatoes, especially when fried 🥗
Fruits: grapes, berries, apples, melons, cherries, figs, prunes, sour cherries, peaches, pomegranates are the most historically loved fruits in the Greek diet. Since the middle ages citruses like the orange, the lemon and the mandarin are more and more loved. Greeks nowadays use lemon almost more than vinegar and both have become integral components of the Greek diet. Obviously, tropical fruits like, say, banana, mango, grapefruit are not present in the traditional Greek diet, however all fruits are good fruits and you can enjoy them freely 🍎
Legumes. Eat freely to the tolerance of your body. Legumes can be too heavy for some GI tracts. Legumes are a great source of protein and fibre. Choose brown lentils, white beans, fava beans, chickpeas, giant beans and black eyed peas the most 🫘
Nuts, seeds: almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, peanuts etc. Eat as much as your body can take, because everybody is different 🥜
Mushrooms: mushroom it up! A great healthy way to have them is grilled with herbs and plain or apple cider vinegar dressing 🍄‍🟫
Whole grains: this is the traditional way to eat grains. Brown bread, oats, whole wheat pasta 🌾
Fish and seafood: find and eat them fresh. Instead of buying them deep frozen from the big markets, find local fish stores if your place is coastal and has them. Eat both large but especially small and medium sized fish. Some fish like salmon and tuna should ideally not be consumed daily due to their high levels of mercury and fats 🐟🎣🍤
Herbs and spices. Feel free to use as much as you want however if you are interested also in the flavours of the Greek diet besides the health benefits, a tip is that Greek dishes do not contain extremely hot spices 🌿
Water: A lot of water daily and, mind you, plain clear mineral water. No flavoured water, definitely not sparkling water and ideally no other liquids in place of the water. I mean, sure you can have liquids but you should ALSO have plain water 💧
Eat a few times per week:
Poultry: Poultry and lean meats entered the Greek cuisine mostly after the Middle Ages however they are nowadays enjoyed as part of the Greek Mediterranean diet because they are tasty and healthier than other types of meat. Chicken has become especially popular in the Greek cuisine. Other birds are the pheasant, the quail, the turkey and more sparsely the duck 🍗
Eggs: eggs are healthy and should be consumed a few times per week but not daily because they can cause a rise in cholesterol levels 🥚
Dairy: Greeks LOVE dairy products, especially the various types of cheese, however they are often irritating to the GI tract and they are linked with rises in the level of inflammation in the body. This is why you should ideally limit them to a few times per week. One exception is the yoghurt, which is fermented and can be perhaps consumed more frequently due to its beneficial properties. Important note: if you want to follow the Greek diet, you should ideally opt for milk and other dairy products from goats and sheep! Cow milk is not traditionally used in the Greek cuisine often and sheep and goat milk are significantly healthier and more nutritious. The only drawback is the stronger smell, however if you can get past that, it is strongly advised to switch to those instead of cow milk. Another note: what is known as “Greek yoghurt” in western countries is not in fact a true Greek yoghurt. What you call Greek yoghurt is to us simply a strained yoghurt, a yoghurt from which the whey has been removed. Sometimes in western markets (and in Greek “modern” dessert yoghurt products) butterfat and powdermilk is added to them and they are mostly made of cow’s milk. Again, a traditional Greek yoghurt is made of sheep, goat milk or a mix of both and is unstrained. It also has a trademark thickened skin on its top (dunno if this is the actual term lol) which is in fact the part of the yoghurt that contains the most nutrients and personally it’s the tastiest part of the yoghurt but apparently it is not for everyone. As an example, a study showed that an unstrained sheep yoghurt has more protein, more omega-3 fatty acids and minerals yet fewer calories and fats than a strained cow yoghurt 🍦🧀
Wine: in small portions, like a small glass up to a few times per week and always in combination with your meal. You don’t drink it to get hammered, you drink it for the health benefits it has in very moderate quantities and for the reasonable mild euphoria it causes before it becomes harmful. The GI tract is linked to the brain and is detrimentally influenced by negative emotions. This is why it is important to try to be in a good mood, relaxed and peaceful when you sit down to eat. A sip of wine now and then can be good for that 🍷
Eat once per week or ideally less:
Red meat like pork or beef. In fact, beef should be the one most avoided not only because it is indeed the rarest of the common meats used in traditional Greek cuisine but also because you can’t separate the fat from the meat as easily as with pork. To follow the Greek style in a healthy way opt for goat, then lamb or pork and make beef your most occasional meat dish 🥩
Processed meats should be eaten rarely. If you are in a mood for it though, opt for Greek style sausages with herbs in or bacon at most. Cured meats like ham are better to be avoided but turkey is the healthiest of them. They are not a part of a traditional Greek cuisine though.
Refined grains can be enjoyed weekly but should not replace whole grains
Pastries. What’s new, pastries are not ideal for health. However, if you are yearning for something sweet, if you want to keep it healthy as much as possible in the “Greek way”, opt for desserts made of healthy ingredients like honey, nuts, olive oil and fruits. Chocolate came to Greece in the 19th century, however it has become an integral part of confectionery since then. Opt ideally for dark chocolate, combined with nuts or fruits such as oranges and prunes. Greeks especially love chocolate combined with nuts.
Soft and sugary drinks. Avoid them overall, especially the processed products in the markets. If you need a sweet drink really bad, you can keep it traditional by making your own sweet lemonade, sour cherry, pomegranate etc drink at home. You could also enjoy small quantities of lemon or mastic liquors which are good for digestion.
BONUS TIPS & PHILOSOPHY:
Try to find mastic if it’s available where you live. The mastic is a resin produced from the mastic tree, a species endemic to the Greek island of Chios and a small part of the opposite coast of Turkey. It has numerous beneficial properties, especially for digestion and gut health, and it combines them with a very pleasant fresh and sweet flavour. You can find it in gums that boost digestion, in drinks, in pastries and even in non-edible products like toothpastes. Learn about it and give it a try, no matter if you are interested in following Greek diet or not.
Greek cuisine does not go berserk on as many ingredients as possible (however Greeks typically add more ingredients than, say, Italians and perhaps fewer than the Middle Easterners). Don’t worry about adding as many foods and nutrients in one single dish. The most important thing in Greek cuisine philosophy is to pick the finest ingredients. Avoid deep frozen or precooked and processed ingredients. Pick whole fruits and vegetables from your local small grocery store. For example, don’t buy a watermelon slice in a zelatin bag from the supermarket. Take the whole freaking watermelon home. You heard me right. It’s heavy, yes, but you would be surprised how much tastier and healthier it is this way. Go to the butcher for meat. Go to the specific cheese shop for cheese. Go to the fisherman for fish and seafood. Go to the pastry shop and get a nice dessert instead of buying candies from the market.
Remember that in moderation you can eat most of the foods you desire, especially if they are not processed foods. There is nothing about the Greek diet that is restrictive in terms of its philosophy - historically the intake of various foods was regulated only based on availability and price. There are no foods you should limit due to any perception of them being “bad” and you should never feel guilty the moment you are actually having the food. Just work slowly and progressively by building gradual appreciation for healthy foods and prize less nutritious foods as occasional taste bud rewards.
As said above, a good mood is crucial when you sit down to eat. In the history of the Greek society this translated into eating with friends and / or family, maybe with the occasional sip of wine, ideally in a pleasant environment and always taking your time with your food. If some of these are less feasible than others, try alternatively to improve the setting in which you eat, to eat in an environment that calms you down. Schedule your meal so that you won’t eat in anxiety or hurry, if this is possible. Think of pleasant memories and feel grateful for your food. Cheers! Or, you know, εις υγείαν!

helps with my gain weight journey.
Heyy! Would you mind giving some tips on this? Would be gr8 if they are for vegetarian people (if you know some)
Ty;)
Hello girlie, of course! I'm naturally a slim girl and during the pandemic I suffered for having low weight, normally I would weight in that time 41kg and minimum 38kg. Since last year I recovered myself and now I weigh proudfully 48.5 kg which is my highest weight ever!
Quick list of tips for gaining weight ୨୧
To begin with, we need to know that for gaining weight is essential to:
Do exercise
Eat more and drink water
Have a good sleep
Now that we know that, let's get to the real tips:
Drink less, eat more: Fill your stomach more with nutrients instead of water. Either way, you need to drink your liters for our tips to work.
Find your way to eat more: It can be 3 big meals or eating various times at day if it's alot for your stomach. In my case, I have 4 medium or big meals and I eat various snacks during the day. Another tip related is to track in how much time you feel hungry to know how many meals or snacks to plan to eat daily.
Include foods that help with weight gain: In my case I eat lots of almonds, bananas, greek yogurt, avocado eggs, red meats, chicken, milk, beans and tortillas (i'm from Mexico), but for vegetarians I also recommend: butter, avocado, nuts, beans, greek yogurt, potatoes, rice, bananas, etc.
Find your ideal exercise: In my case I do 8 hours aproximately of exercise per week, find what you like to do and how many times at week and hours you want to do it. If you will worout at home or at the gym I reccomend you to look out for workouts that are focused on weight gain or gaining muscle, since the majority are focused on slimming / losing weight. But, for the results to show we need to apply the diet tips along the quality sleep for all these three areas to give results on our body.
Get some quality sleep between 7-9 hours!
I wish you the best of luck, xoxo ୭ৎ

Ego Headcanons: The Ipliers
Pt. 1
Iplier Manor is home to most of Mark Fischbach’s egos, the Ipliers.
The Actor-Marc(he/him): doesn’t live at the manor. No one knows where he is or much about him. Dark is the only one who recalls what Actor did, and Host knows due to their powers. His body was dead before and during the entirety of WKM (explaining the amount of maiming that Abe listed). He considers the egos made from AHWM and ISWM to be his children, except Engie. He doesn’t like Engie. (More on that in another post). None of those egos know he calls them his children/creations. He cannot be seen as a failure/the bad guy. (In the words of Mark himself, a narcissist asshole). All of the films he was in disappeared without a trace when he died for the first time due to interference by the HE, leaving many film buffs confused (many people thought the movies, and even Marc himself, to be mass hallucinations and there was later a documentary done on the phenomenon)- Powers: can harness the power of the House Entity to create pocket realities(and stay alive).
Wilford Warfstache(he/him): gnc pan Pink and yellow whirlwind of a man. Cries bubbles. Is more powerful than Dark but content letting him take the lead on most things while co-leading the egos. In a relationship with Dark. The events of WKM haunt his dreams, but he very rarely remembers them in the morning. His mustache and a strip of his hair are naturally pink, he doesn’t dye it. (The color loses vibrancy the closer he is to William. Some mornings, his hair/mustache will be entirely brown. On those days, Dark will sit quietly with him until Wilford finally slips back into place.) He feels a special connection to Dark, but is unsure why (he stopped questioning it after they started dating, assuming that’s why). His bouts as William can be triggered by Damien/Celine so they tend to avoid the bubblegum man when in control. - Powers: reality bending (telepathy/telekinesis/teleportation/ ect.)
Darkiplier-Dark/Damien(they/he): nonbinary ace fusion. Is the designated Head of Iplier Manor. While Dark is their own consciousness created as a byproduct of the twins having been stuck in The Upside-down for a time, they only exist when both Damien and Celine are in the body(they can only separate when in Actor’s stories). Dark specifically is the one in a relationship with Wilford, not the twins. Who is in control can be determined by the color of their aura, with Dark having both red and blue, Damien having only blue, and Celine having only red. (Damien will go by both ‘Dark’ and his own name when in control, while Celine chooses to only go by ‘Dark’.) Only a few of the older egos actually know the difference. Dark himself is usually in control of the body with the twins keeping a running commentary in the back of their mind. Celine is the strongest, due to having been a seer, and can force the other two asleep if she so wishes. Feels a sort of parental responsibility for Engie despite them not being a ‘young’ ego. - Powers: blasts of raw telekinesis like power, shadow bending(possibly more, undiscovered)
King of the Squirrels-Artie(he/him): a physically younger ego (roughly 12). Was pretty much adopted by Dark/Wilford. Has a treehouse connected to his bedroom through the window where most of his squirrel friends have built nests. Always has one or two baby squirrels in his pockets. Has named all of his squirrel friends. Doesn’t usually have his peanut butter beard(Dark banned it in the house and he ushers almond butter instead when a Crank is over). Likes spending time with Engie, who is fascinated by all types of animals. - Powers: higher agility, can talk to animals.
Engineer Mark-Engie(he/they): an ego made from Dark, specifically Damien (like how Marc considers certain egos his children). Due to that, he feels a special connection to Dark and has adopted them as a parent. He likes hanging out with Wilford. They love animals of any type and can often be found with Artie, helping him take care of his squirrels. Loves hugs and will find any excuse to hug someone. They are basically the physical embodiment of Mark’s love for space. He has those glow in the dark stars on his bedroom ceiling and a telescope. - Powers: unknown
The Host-Isaac(he/they): demiaroace nonbinary. uses his narrations as a sort of echolocation, able to see what they describe. Doesn’t technically need a service dog, but sometimes wishes they had one (more so when Mark and Amy visit with Chica)- Powers: visions, low level mental suggestion, and limited reality warping through narrations.
The Author-Oscar(he/him): aroace agender. Wrote actual books. Lived alone in a cabin. Loves dogs. Does not like large groups of people. Keeps to himself. - Powers: low level mental suggestion, limited reality warping through written word.
— Host and Author are siblings OR the same person depending on how I want to write them. (There is a separate post for these 2 as well)
Dr. Edward Iplier-Doc(he/him): demiaroace in a relationship with Host. Watches those medical dramas. Consistently running on 2 hours of sleep and way too much caffeine, but somehow always pretty chill and looks well put together. Pretty much adopted Eric. Dislikes when Mark is off his ADHD meds because it effects all the egos. - Powers: can see how people will die. (He’s very glad egos don’t stay dead)
Eric Derekson(he/him): anxiety boiTM. One of the younger egos (about 18-19). Has chronic bad luck. Has two prosthetic legs. Showed up at the Manor one day and was practically adopted by Doc and Host by the end of the day. Enjoys spending time with Oliver. - Powers: unknown
Bim Trimmer(he/him): theatre bi, not a literal cannibal. Does enjoy very rare steaks though and was mistaken as one by the Jims. Runs a game show in Wilford’s studio but often helps Wilford with interviews as well. Hangs out with Murdock the most and has taken Yan under his wing. He sees Yancy sort of as a younger brother too. - Powers: ramped up charisma
Murdock Malarkey(he/him): murder man with a plan. He’s the older of the two Malarkey brothers. Murdock has a job as a paranormal investigator(the Drowned Man). Keeps an eye on Yancy most of the time. Has a flair for the dramatic and enjoys spending time with Bim. He definitely gives murder tips to Yan. He helped Yancy with the murder of their parents but got away while Yancy got caught. He still blames himself for not watching his brother close enough. Write poetry in his free time. Sometimes hangs out with Author. - Powers: can see and talk to ghosts.
Yancy Malarkey(he/him): theatre kid all the way. The younger Malarkey brother. Best friends with Heapass. Very good with anything that could be used to stab. Regularly spars with Yan to keep their skills up. Got a job at the local corner store after he got out of Happy Trails on parole. Wants to someday hit Broadway. How’d the brownie née bogart go?
sorry to crush anyone's hopes and dreams but it went... fine. not fantastically, but not disastrously either. it was good. we ate the whole thing. was it great? no, not by any means. but was it bad? not at all. it was fine! borderline enjoyable, imminently tolerable. 6.9/10, would make (better) again. recipe under the cut for if you want that

NEW AND IMPROVED MUG BROWNIE (2024 edition)
baby, never underestimate what the power of INGREDIENCE will do for you
also an oven. i didn't have to buy a single thing because i can bake now and so i just do. wrow. imagine that
all measurements are very very very ehhh since i honestly just eyeballed and estimated it all. sorry. follow your heart and all that but also let's be real you're not using this recipe
half a 1/4 cup of flour, as you can't find your (non-existent?) 1/8 cup
3 tsps of cocoa powder, as you don't know how many tsps to a 1/8 cup and don't have a 1/8 cup to use (see above)
2 tsps of sugar
half a tsp of baking powder. perhaps baking soda would be better to use but you can't find yours and the powder is right there. you don't remember which one is better for mug brownies anyway
pour in some milk until it "feels right"
add just a tiny splash of vegetable oil, in place of butter and/or eggs. you need a binding agent for... baking reasons, but you don't have the latter and don't feel like melting the former. so vegetable oil it is. side note: absolutely killed this part, shout out to me
mix all together. marvel over how it looks like a batter, but ponder whether it's enough
add another half 1/4 cup of flour, and 1-2 more tsps of cocoa powder depending on which one i did but forgor sorry
do not add more baking powder because you felt like you added too much previously anyway
1 more tsp of sugar. side note: it was NOT sweet at all so definitely at least double both instances of sugar. perhaps even triple. (and then likely adjust wets to compensate)
mix together. too sludgy! add milk until it once again has a batter like consistency. remark aloud your confusion that it takes up the exact same amount of real estate in the mug (your beloved young dumb and full of libel mug, naturally) but decide against adding yet more in case it overflows. side note: it only rose to about half the cup, definitely add another [see written second amounts above] of everything.
put in the microwave for 29 seconds. check on it. put in for 15 seconds. check on it. another 15 seconds. check on it. at this point it will look and smell done, but you will suspect underneath is unbaked, so do another 30 seconds, broken up in 10 second intervals.
take it out. cautiously poke it. it looks... fine. like a baked good. eat it. it tastes fine! unsweetened, as mentioned previously, and a very unique texture. somewhere between cake and muffin and waffle. you did not make a mug brownie BUT...
neither did you make an alien organism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in conclusion we ate it all and would have eaten more. in the future i would make more batter, add more sugar, and throw in some salt (i forgot oops but you can add a pinch) + extract (vanilla/almond, depending on mood), and maybe some butter? to make the consistency more brownie? or even cookie? or cakey? but it was totally edible.
congrats you've made a mug... chocolate... something. it was not alive! see you again next year thanks for coming

Skincare tips
(... from a girl with incredibly sensitive skin)
Witchhazel extract kills bacteria and is a great toner to use before applying anything else on the skin
Honey and aloe vera gel can help heal scars
If you're prone to acne and scar deeply (like me) get an acne cream with benzoyl peroxide in it; it works like a charm and has not caused my skin any irritation
Jojoba oil has amazing benefits and is a fantastic moisturiser; your skin will feel like butter, it's amazing
Applying beef tallow regularly is the best thing I have ever done for my skin; it helps with acne, my skin is softer and glowier, and it is the only thing to have ever gotten my eczema under control
I combine my beef tallow with honey and olive oil but that is a combination that works for my skin in particular so do some research regarding what could benefit your skin to combine with the tallow if you want to
Beef tallow also helps soothe sunburns. Coconut oil makes sunburns worse.
Eating avocado makes eczema worse (especially if you have type O blood)
If you use products with natural oil bases (jojoba oil, for example) but your skin gets irritated, it's probably the essential oils irritating you. Try the natural carrier oil by itself.
You can make your own salt scrub with rock salt, a little fine table salt, olive oil and jojoba oil. Add essential oils if you want. Store in an air tight container.
BONUS: Rub and massage almond oil and jojoba oil into your scalp and hair to stimulate thicker hair growth, softer and more moisturised hair, and to prevent breakage. It leaves your hair pretty oily though, so I leave in it for a few hours on hair wash days.

A Solitary Sno Ball
@today-in-fic [on Ao3]
Mulder wasn’t in the habit of profiling everyone he came across, but when Scully first walked into his office, his VCS days weren’t so far behind him that he couldn’t help subconsciously sketching an outline of her psyche. Spending hours together on their first few cases made it easy to flesh out the profile.
Full of youthful arrogance, he was sure he had her down pat. An overachiever who had been praised for her obedience her whole life, she approached her academic and professional career with a checklist mentality, imagining that success and fulfillment were guaranteed as long as she followed the rules and did as told. She was probably a middle child from a military family, very likely had daddy issues, practiced some form of Christianity (he’d put his money on Catholicism), and, he assumed, had a proclivity for older men in positions of authority.
(In many regards, he was right, although after years of working together he realized nothing about Scully’s essence fit a profile. She was truly one in five billion.)
The only thing he couldn’t figure out was her guilty pleasure. He knew she had to have one. Her type-A personality and anal retentive nature all but guaranteed it. It would be a self-destructive habit that went against everything she knew was good for her as a doctor
His first guess was cigarettes. Boggs let on that she’d stolen from her mother’s pack as a teenage act of rebellion. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched, then, for her to sneak a smoke in a stressful moment.
He could imagine the relief she’d feel. She’d make a ritual out of it. After a long day in the morgue or arguing with her jerk of a partner she’d get home, kick off her shoes, and reach for the pack in her bedside drawer. She’d have a lighter in there, too. She’d keep matches for lighting candles elsewhere. This cheap plastic lighter was just for her little dalliance. Maybe she’d push open her bedroom window to keep the smell out. If it were freezing cold outside, even better, the biting chill would be another element of self-punishment. She’d recite statistics on lung and mouth cancer to herself, summon up the mental images of blackened lungs she’d held in her own hands during autopsies, and then bring the cigarette to her mouth. She would light it then close her eyes, pulling the nicotine, tobacco, and tar deep into her lungs, relishing the burn. Reciting the cancer-causing chemicals infiltrating her cells would only intensify the pleasure.
Her rare, solitary cigarette and the ritual around it would bring a pleasure nearly sexual in nature. The release would flood from her throat, down her shoulders, into her belly, and then finally reach her liquid hot center, leaving her levitating with pleasure and guilt. She was a Catholic after all.
But Mulder was wrong. Her guilty pleasure wasn’t cigarettes or any of the other vices he’d dreamed up for her—unprotected sex with strangers, a late night binge and purge, or even a snorted line of amphetamines, perhaps a habit picked up in her high-pressure med school days.
No, it was something more perverse than even he could have imagined: saccharine sweet, artificially colored, pastel pink Hostess Sno Balls. They were calorie bombs with no redeeming nutritional value that stayed suspiciously shelf stable longer than anything found in nature. Dana Scully should not eat Hostess Sno Balls so, obviously, she craved them.
This was a woman who ate her eggs without yolks, her salads without dressing, and her popcorn without butter. She drank her coffee with a thimble of skim milk and believed a handful of raw, unsalted almonds was a fulfilling snack. So when he caught her trying to shove a package of Sno Balls into her purse on the way out of a gas station early in their partnership, he was endlessly amused.
“I didn’t get my copy of the New England Journal of Medicine this month,” he said, grinning as he topped off the gas tank. “Was there a groundbreaking report on the cardiovascular benefits of high fructose corn syrup and red 40 dye?”
“The journal is weekly,” she said, opening up the passenger side door without making eye contact. “And no, Mulder. It’s just been a shitty week and I want a fucking Sno Ball.”
He couldn’t argue with her there. They’d been stuck on a stakeout that ended up being a massive waste of time. The case was in a small town whose only lodging was a rundown motor inn with pathetic water pressure, sheets even he deemed too filthy to sleep under, and neither air conditioner nor cable TV. If anyone deserved a Sno Ball, it was his partner.
On the drive back to DC he teased out the details. She told him how the mass produced snack served as a reliable comfort during her nomadic childhood as a navy brat. She never knew what her new school would be like, if the kids would be nice, or if the teacher would be strict, but she always knew she’d find those friendly pink confections in the local supermarket. And they came two to a pack, so they were perfect for sharing with her sister.
“In fact, I’m going to give her one of these,” she said.
“You’re seeing your sister when we get back?”
“No,” she said. “Melissa is currently on a joy ride up and down the West Coast with her boyfriend so I probably won’t see her for weeks, but these things never go bad.”
“I’d say it’s good to hear there will be something for the cockroaches to eat after we humans manage to destroy all other forms of life on this planet, but somehow I doubt even the roaches will want anything to do with that.”
“I guess my cabinet is safe from roaches then.”
Once he found out about the Sno Balls, it became a ritual. After an especially grueling case he’d pick up a bag of sunflower seeds and a package of Sno Balls from the gas station on their way out of town.
The first time he bought them after Melissa died, he didn’t have the heart to give her a package of two, so he tore open the plastic and tossed one Sno Bal in the garbage before bringing it to her, a single Sno Ball in a ripped-open wrapper.
First, she cried. Next, she thanked him. And, finally, she told him it was a waste to throw out a perfectly good Sno Ball and that he should just eat it himself.
Of course, he couldn’t. Even a man who lived off cheap coffee, sunflower seeds, and processed deli meat sandwiches on Wonder Bread had his limits. So he kept the half-full packages in one of his kitchen cabinets. Once she discovered them, she started sneaking one whenever she was over late at night reviewing a case file. She was right that they never went bad. And he was right that, even unsealed, they never attracted roaches.
***
The perky blonde waitress at the Headless Woman Pub was skeptical when he showed up with a single, unwrapped Sno Ball and requested it be presented with a candle at the end of the meal for his dinner companion who had yet to arrive. She pointed out that serving outside food was against the health code. He never told Scully he had to flash his badge and play the terminal cancer card to get the waitress to agree to serve up a solitary pink Sno Ball of unknown origin. But seeing her face light up when it arrived at the table and watching the reflection of the sparklers dancing in her eyes made it all worth it.
