Okay, MAJOR SALT COMING! Also a long post!

So I have the Disney Villains tarot deck but before I go into the salt part of the post, let's go into the positives.

The cards have stunning art and each card is appropriately themed to the villain generally speaking about 98% of the time. (IMO).

Another positive is the roster of villains included. Seeing even a few minor/underrated villains is pretty cool and impressive.

Some examples of these villains include Bowler Hat Guy, Madame Mim, Madame Medusa, and possibly Yzma.

Now onto the salt.

As impressive as the span of villains is, two villains are absent who (IMO) deserved a card.

King Candy

Frollo

First, there are other villains absent, but I'm sticking to these two since I've seen these movies. Now going in order, it is an absolute SHAME (IMO) that King Candy doesn't have a card, but I have an idea of which card suits him best.

The King of Swords. Although this card is given to Scar, and I do love how it looks, I believe that King Candy deserved it.

Plus, Scar appears on like three other cards, so I think it's okay for him to appear three times (sorry Scar, I do love you too).

Anyway, I'm going to go into some detail as to why I believe King Candy/Turbo deserves the card by going into the meaning of it and how it relates to him.

I'll admit, I have a lot of points and can talk about this for days, but I'm going to condense them to 3-ish. I'll do the same for Frollo too in a part 2 post.

Going for a two in one here: The card is about being an authority who uses reason and their intelligence for good. while the reverse of this is being cunning to deceive people.

After Turbo hijacked Sugar Rush, he was very methodical about his approach to make it sound like he's their rightful ruler. He locked up their memories, then he fabricated the lie that she was a danger to their game. Turbo did his best to make sure nothing went unchecked and made sure to make the lie sound convincing to protect them (but mostly him). He's very strategic, and was able to come up with a plan to manipulate Ralph with 16 manipulation tactics in one go. He was even able to feign being concerned to play on Ralph's attachment to Vanellope.

I think the best line that best captures this aspect of the card is "Doing what's right, no matter what." AKA: He recognizes that it may sound harsh, but he makes his lies sound reasonable to protect his subjects and game.

The card also represents enjoying structure when upright. But it's controlling and oppressive in a need for order when reversed.

Turbo needs everything to be to be going his way, as he's a control freak.

Inserting the test animation here, he even says "You are a threat to my game, to the order I have maintained. And if there's one thing I can't abide, it's anything out of order!"

Also, the split-second something isn't in his control, he starts to fumble and break into either rage or nervously laughing. He's capable of coming off as cool and composed, but he's scared of being caught and it can cause him to lash out in anger (another aspect of the card).

Just as mentioned in the previous point, he made sure nothing went unchecked and made an entire world literally revolve around him. He can and WILL happily use all of his resources of excessive force he has like the cops, the Sugar Rush equivalent of S.W.A.T., and the fungeon to detain someone who stands in his way.

As a minor note, there's a line in the tarot guidebook that states the reverse of the card can represent "someone who needs to win at any cost." Which describes Turbo to a T. He not only wants attention but he's also extremely competitive. It's part of his programming, and it ties to his love for racing. To always come out on top and be #1. No matter who or what stands in his way.

That core drive (pun intended) was the cause of his villainy in the first place and earned him his infamous status in the arcade.

Okay, I don't want to sound too salty, but you can imagine my disappointment when King Candy didn't get a card.

Oh well, Its fine, I still love and use this deck.

So I guess we can call this the thrilling conclusion to the 3 part saga of including King Candy in Disney Villain merchandise.

Also as a sidenote: hypothetically if he did get this card, what would the imagery be?

I feel the card has the potential to get creative with the glitch effects. For example make it so that he's glitching between the Turbo appearance and the King Candy appearance. If we want to be a little cheeky, we could have it set in his castle, and out the window, we see a the cybug Ralph initially sent to SR flying outside a castle window. (similar to Hook's card as the crocodile is seen outside)

So basically, my interpretation would be a mix of these images and Captain Hook's card:

But, if anyone else has really cool ideas, I'd love to hear them! If you want, you could also draw it out to illustrate your point (pun intended) Honestly please do, I'd love to see other people's interpretations of this card for him. The possibilities are endless!

Hi Mim,, I wondered if you or any of your followers have words/advice on going long-distance with a beloved partner. I have to move far away from my love of 9 years(!) to attend my dream PhD program and we won't be able to reunite for another 3 years while he finishes his schooling. Every day takes me closer to the move and has me more heartbroken even though this is what I want and I believe we can make it through. Any words of comfort from the soracities community is so welcome and needed. <3

I have no experience with long distance relationships so there really isn't much advice I can give, but what I can tell you anon (if you haven't already) is: plan, plan, plan!!! Long distance is always going to be difficult and there's no way around that difficulty so one of your best bets is for both of you to work as hard as you can to maintain open, attentive, consistent, and deeply honest communication.

Figure out how much communication you need and what kind you value most--what about your partner? What are the ways you can make time and space for these despite the distance? Then sit down with your partner and work out a schedule for phone calls, video calls, daily (or weekly) check-ins etc and, most importantly: hold each other (and yourselves) accountable to them. Set out a game plan for how you will tackle conflicts over long distance: if you both are having packed school weeks, or feel you really need to talk about something, agree on a code word that says "I know you are busy but I desperately need you to make some time for this issue / for me" and then agree on a timeframe in which the other person will address it.

For example, you can schedule it so that you both ensure you have at least one weekly catch-up, and one fun date, on separate days that you always keep to: if you can manage something extra, great, but if not: have a baseline minimum you both honour alongside your commitments to your work and education and daily lives (you can even just have a study date where you both do your work together via video call)--your dates can be anything: you can do a weekly movie night with Hyperbeam or Teleparty (or visit the cinema on the same day to watch the same film and then call each other to talk about it), if it's feasible, take a walk together when you're on the phone and make a whole thing of it: pick a nice scenic spot in your respective places, plan your route, let the other know what it's like where you are, bake something together over video call, etc. Whatever routines and rituals you had together, see if there is a way you can carry them over remotely over the next 3 years, or even vary the things you do to make up for the fact that it is remote for now.

I think one of the hardest things to contend with is the sudden lack of physical proximity to each other, and the loneliness that follows especially if you see people around you in relationships having that, so I would also recommend finding stand-ins for that physical closeness. You said you won't be able to reunite until your partner finishes his own schooling--I don't know if that means quick weekend visits are out of the question (either through sheer distance or financially) but if they aren't, absolutely see if you can plan a visit either from your end or his. If not then maybe, along with your virtual dates, write each other letters, or send each other small tokens, postcards, silly little missives, anything to offer a physical piece of yourself to each other but also to remind the other that you're thinking of them and missing them and they can physically touch and hold those thoughts in a physical form.

I can absolutely understand your fear, anon, and it is definitely not easy and incredibly daunting, but I think it is something beautiful that you have had 9 (9!!!!!) wonderful years with your love already and the fact that you are brave enough to take this leap for your own dreams AND have such faith and trust in your relationship and its strength is a true testament to what you have built together over these years. The Troll Doomguy Au

(honestly I need to think of a proper name for this lol)

Things are a little messy and all over the place time wise as I didn’t originally plan for this to become a full on fic.

Slayer (the aforementioned troll Doomguy)

Roughly 15 feet of angry troll who also has a habit of eating the demons.

Cropped his ears at some point to make them look vaguely human, almost docked his tail but chose not to after seeing some now probably extinct species of demon use their tail as a weapon.

From the events of 2016 and prior he had the Meathook on his tail but put it on his shotgun after the attachment was ripped off by a certain grudge holding Cyberdemon.

In the events of Eternal it’s been replaced with a mace and has a more limited range.

He’s pretty smart despite what most people think, it’s just that a lot of his problems can genuinely be solved with Incredible Violence.

Has a very hazy recollection of the events of Doom 1993 and anything before that is even more hazy due to him repressing those memories.

He did have a wife and kid (stepson) who he loved dearly but lost them during an “accident”

Despite all this he’s actually pretty chill!

He tends to get easily attached to people who aren’t as easily afraid of him.

Considers Valen as family despite Valen himself not really knowing.

Mim Digsby

In the events of A Beast on Mars, Mim is the last human alive in the Mars Facility.

5,4 gremlin of a person who likes to take apart machinery in their spare time.

They’re a miner and mechanic who usually works with excavation equipment, and has clearance to work with mining gloves.

Started the trend of saying thank you to VEGA whenever one of the drones did something helpful or brought supplies. (This is also what got them their mechanic training after VEGA did some light string pulling)

Has punched a foreman for trying to make people continue mining in an unstable tunnel.

Used to be in a relationship with an Elite Guard prior to their “promotion” but things didn’t really work out after, but the two are still friends.

Is on Mars as part of a “criminal rehabilitation program”. Their license expired on their way moving back to Massachusetts and got arrested after getting into a fight with some rich dude at a bar.

VEGA (my take on Vega at least)

Plant enthusiast, he thinks they’re neat. Slayer was more than happy to give him a section of the greenhouses for his own personal garden.

Didn’t like Slayer at first due to how aggressive he seemed to be towards the equipment of the facility and was worried he’d end up harming any possible survivors.

Quickly found out he truly means best for the survivors of the invasion and also feels sympathetic towards Slayer after finding out the little bits of memory he does have regarding the UAC.

He’s pretty sure if he was capable of getting headaches he’d be getting them daily from Slayer trying to do something stupid i.e trying to fist fight a demon twice his size.

Keeps a list of all the things he’s caught Slayer eating that he probably shouldn’t be.

This list includes: excessive amounts of demons, Gore Nest remains, garbage from a cafeteria, an unidentified Argenta plant, dirt, Hellgrowth, and “mystery meat”.

Derrin Willams (Troll au Intern)

Used to own rats, but they passed away prior to the invasion.

Tech support for the ARC but also just helped out wherever needed.

Liked reading about the Slayer and Argent D’Nur and found him fascinating and was genuinely ecstatic to meet him. (He really wants to see a withrin)

Still gets spooked by Slayer from time to time, but has managed to spook him back.

Surprisingly good with a gun and can at least hold his own against zombies and like a singular imp scout

(Not really a personality fact but his last name comes from my blind ass mistaking the numbers on his uniform as the word William or Willams)

There are other characters and ocs I plan to appear in the au but I haven’t gotten there and burnout is making things hard in general, oof. I’ll probably do up a bigger one of these specifically for the troll au in the future.

Stowaway Mer au

I’m doing the Mer au version of Stowaway mostly because there’s significantly more stuff for it (see nearly 30 drawings and like 6 chapters for one au). But honestly it’s pretty far removed from Doom and I might rework it into its own thing… which means redesigning nearly 30 sea demons….

Lived with her “aunty” Nihm in an apartment in Port Murlow prior to moving into the Old Taggart house with Flynn.

Works at a bait shop and Mr. Grimmar’s Occult Shop.

Owns some homemade ghost hunting equipment and occasionally mucks about old abandoned places with her friends looking for ghosts.

Looks like a mix of leopard and Port Jackson shark and is from the Indo Pacific and southern Pacific Ocean (he is very fucking lost)

Needs glasses but can’t exactly get any as he’s a fish man.

Has a fear of the open ocean and orcas and does not enjoy long travels between the reefs an kelp

Has a fascination with human technology and history and enjoys exploring shipwrecks with his siblings. Though after a bad experience with some humans he is somewhat distrustful of them.

Has no clue how the hell he ended up in the Atlantic.

Has committed the least amount of crimes… so far

Flynn Taggart

Looks intimidating but is actually pretty chill

Moved to Port Murlow following his discharge from the military for various reasons.

Has many fond memories of his visits there when his grandfather lived in it, though he still doesn’t like the basement even now that he’s older.

Starting to show signs of selective mutism and is learning sign language because of it. He also isn’t a fan of eye contact anymore after the mountain incident.

Has a picture of Daisy in his wallet and is looking into getting her certified as an emotional support animal.

Recently gotten a job on a fishing boat and already doesn’t like his boss.

He inherited the house from his now missing grandfather Keen.

Doesn’t like being alone in the house

Has a degree in marine biology and is currently studying a newly discovered species of bioluminescent algae he named Vegastella scriptorseintillais

Vega is the second oldest person living in the Old Taggart house.

Used to work with Dr. Hayden and Pierce but after an accident that left many researchers including Olivia dead Vega and Samuel had a dispute which left the two very bitter with each other.

He blames himself for the aforementioned accident.

Vega moved into the old Taggart house after realizing that living on a cave connected to another cave containing hallucinogenic algae is not good for his mental and physical health.

Nihm Barbatus

Freelance security guard and one Em’s mentors.

Met Em during one of her contacts on a cargo ship that had left Canada.

Made friends with Flynn when he was briefly a freelance security guard, and was the one who told Em that Flynn was looking for roommates.

Friend of the Grimmar couple.

She also has a large extended family and plans to bring Em with her to the next family reunion.

Quite literally the largest of the arcane academies, acting as an "all are welcome" paramilitary institution for mages of all sorts. It is revered for its music program, particularly its marching band. - the description that would be on Corlux's in-game info card if it were canon

A Very Brief Background

According to legend, Corlux Key Seminary was originally opened by a collective of special forces mages led by a wizard of power so fantastic that he could supposedly create living worlds out of paint and paper. These mages guarded their kingdom of light with such ferocity that they were referred to as 'living locks', which was fairly ironic considering their weapons were shaped to resemble keys.

With that said, however, the lead mage truly believed that people of all talents and backgrounds were welcome to their land if their hearts were 'pure'; after all, unconventional talents had been proved to win the day over and over in the long lens of history. As such, Corlux Key Seminary was created in honor of that wizard and his friends by offering a variety of programs for students to harness their skills.

Tidbits & Trivia

Night Raven College and Royal Sword Academy can bicker about having the power; Corlux Key Seminary is content to boast about having the numbers. There are a grand total of twenty dormitories across the entire campus, though the joke among students is that there are actually twenty-three. This is due to some of the dorms having gotten a rebranding of name some years back, but people will use the new and old names interchangeably. It isn't uncommon for freshmen to be deliberately told to retrieve something from one of the dorms using the old name for it so that they will wander around for hours trying to find it.

Corlux Key Seminary is located in the far north of the Shaftlands; not exactly neighbors with Harveston, but close enough that the more troublesome youth of the town are threatened with being sent there if they don't shape up.

Corlux's inclusivity even goes as far as the dress code; as long as the students are wearing academy-issued attire and it's properly clean, they're golden as far as the rules go. This is actually a selling point for students who are exploring their gender identity, or even just for people who want to wear quote-unquote 'gender-specific attire' just for the sake of comfort. Rather recently, one student even turned down their invite to Royal Sword Academy specifically because 'they don't allow guys to wear skorts/skirts there; hard pass'.

As Corlux is currently under the reign of a fae, all students are granted protection from minor cantrips and spells by what is referred to as a 'pulchra osculum' ('beautiful kiss'). This is a TWST-fan!verse term created by myself which I will explain at a later date, but the basic idea is that it's a minor protection spell.

Corlux is officially listed as paramilitary due to their structure not being fully comparable to a traditional military school, though there is a kind of 'honors program' sponsored by official military institutes from across the nations to help those with serious aspirations for the armed forces. The way to distinguish those students from the general populace is an armband emblazed with a specific crown modeled after a symbol worn by a legendary 'Keywielder', as the military-aspiring students are called.

Even if students do not choose to enlist into any kind of military service upon graduation, they will receive top-of-the-line training for a variety of careers. As mentioned previously, one of the school's most famed aspects is their marching band that has seen several of its former members go on to be professional musicians of some kind.

As previously mentioned, Corlux Key Seminary is an arcane academy created by yours truly to serve...well, a lot of purposes, actually;

Play around with the idea of what a TWST military school would look like while also having a bit of flexibility for fun

Give the girlies/girlie-identifying folks of TWST a place to be educated since there don't seem to be a whole lot of those in canon (at least from what I've seen)

Place a few extra Kingdom Hearts references into TWST (you mean to tell me that four of the Great Seven are the villains of the Princesses of Hearts, with one of those Seven even being Maleficent herself, because of sheer coincidence? I think NOT, friend!)

Because this is a fanverse for a piece of media, which means we live by the credence 'I did it because I could' xD

The Alabama high school band director shocked with a stun gun after a football game last week in front of dozens of students was "just doing my job," he said Wednesday.

Police officers in Birmingham told Johnny Mims, the band director at Minor High School, to tell his band to stop playing about 20 minutes after the end of a football game on Sept. 14. The band was in the midst of playing music for a "fifth quarter."

Body camera footage released by police shows Mims continuing to conduct the approximately 145-member band through the end of a song. Then a physical altercation with officers ensued before he was shocked three times.

"The things that happened at that game should have never happened," Mims told reporters Wednesday. "The students should have never seen me Tased.

Mims was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and harassment, police. According to police, he "pushed" an officer during the altercation and had to be shocked to be subdued.

He denied pushing, hitting or attempting to strike an officer and said the force he was met with was "excessive."

"My client never struck or even remotely attempted to strike an officer," Juandalynn Givan, a state representative and Mims' attorney, told USA TODAY on Wednesday.

Givan said she and the Alabama Education Association, which represents teachers and other public school employees, were pursuing legal avenues to achieve accountability for the actions of police. They are also pushing for Mims to go back to work after he was placed on administrative leave while the school district reviews the incident.

Video shows officers telling director to stop the band

Footage released by police and additional footage provided to USA TODAY by Givan shows officers approached Mims as he directed the still playing band in a set of bleachers. Loud music drowned out much of the conversation, but an officer can be heard telling Mims to stop the band from playing.

"Get out of my face," Mims told an officer.

Mims told the officer they were wrapping up their last song. Mims continued to conduct the students while several officers stood in front of him and told him the stadium needed to be cleared.

At one point, an officer told Mims he would go to jail.

Mims gave two thumbs up and said, "That’s cool." Soon after, the stadium lights were turned off, and the band continued to play the remaining few bars of their song, at which point Mims motioned for the performance to conclude.

"Put him in handcuffs," an officer said.

Why was Mims arrested?

Mims was then pulled from the conductor's stand, Givan told USA TODAY. Much of the physical confrontation between Mims and police was obstructed from the camera's view. Police said Mims refused to put his hands behind his back and pushed an officer.

Givan said none of the footage she has seen shows Mims striking out at an officer.

As Mims was shocked with the stun gun three times, many of the onlookers, which included students, were screaming, the video showed.

It's not clear why officers were instructing Mims to wrap up the band and clear out of the stadium. Mims told reporters he and the opposing school's band director had agreed beforehand to play a fifth quarter after the game. He said once the lights went off, it was also hard for him to direct the band and officers standing between him and the students "interfered" with his ability to follow their orders.

"I was just doing my job as an educator, instructing the band, allowing the band to play and, again, just celebrating the achievements of our football team, cheerleader squad and our band program," he said.

Givan also told USA TODAY that officers did not inform Mims he was under arrest until later and cursed at him.

Legal experts told USA TODAY it's not clear whether his arrest was lawful. He should have complied with officers' demands and set a better example for the students, said Brian Higgins, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. But Birmingham defense attorney Victor Revill said it's important to consider whether Mims had a legal right to be in the stadium at the time.

Arrest has impacted students, community, lawyer says

Givan and members of the Alabama Education Association said Wednesday the arrest and use of a Taser on Mims has "traumatized" students and impacted the community.

"This was unacceptable. It's an embarrassment to the state, it's an embarrassment to the city," Givan said.

She said Mims sustained injuries and has seen a doctor. He is experiencing numbness and tingling as a result of being shocked, she said.

"He’s emotionally distraught over this," Givan said.

In extended body camera footage provided by Givan, an officer leading Mims away in handcuffs can be heard telling him that his actions would make students less trusting of police in the future while Mims insists it was the police that escalated the situation.

Givan said she is pushing for the officers to be put on administrative leave.

I'll be okay with Hazbin Hotel season 2 only having 8 episodes IF that season mainly focuses on the smaller stuff, like Charlie again trying to focus on redeeming sinners and the Vee's plans against the main characters.

As much as I want to see more big moments about things such as Lilith and what she has been doing all this time, getting hints about Eve and Roo, seeing Charlie interacting with angels like Jesus Christ and her angelic aunts/uncles, and seeing other HH characters like the von Eldritch family and Crymini (who again I think should be a Hellhound) I would like to see those stories be expanded and explored properly and not be rushed in a small season like Vivize and the writers had to do for Hazbin Hotel season 1.

I got a few ideas for what the 8 episodes can be about related to these things:

The season premiere has the hotel crew meeting their new resident Baxter. I can see the episode going over several other things such as the aftermath of the season 1 finale, like how stopping the Extermination has made the Pride ring a little crowded and sadly the characters learn there is going to be another Extermination happening in about 9 months. We could learn that Charlie has a bit of PTSD from the battle and is still guilty about Pentious' death. Maybe as a way to coup wiht this she has doubled her efforts to find a way to get sinners into Heaven.

I also could see such an episode having a plot point where people are checking into the hotel BUT most don't want to actually be better people, something Baxter does at first before slowly changing, so Charlie and co. now need to weed out those that want to be redeemed from those just using the hotel for various purposes. I could see the last idea being the premise of its own episode, as it would be a great way to add several characters to the hotel staff/group at once.

Exploring Vox and Alastor's past. This could explore a bit of Alastor's human life, but also what happened to Alastor 7 years ago. Great way to start dabbling into the Roo (or Lilith if you believe in that) connection theory.

Charlie trying to terminate Angel's contract with Valentino once and for all. I have brought up the question why Charlie hasn't made Angel leave his job as a requirement of him staying at the hotel and after seeing how badly Val treats Angel and with the Vees being the main antagonist of S2, this should happen. This would basically be like Helluva Boss's mid season 2 episode but I can see it being more dramatic and pleasing to see Val lose. this can also lead to Val getting more motivated to take down the hotel crew in the end.

Charlie goes to Lucifer for information on how Heaven and Hell decided who goes where after they die, in hopes of finding a clue or angle for her redemption program. This episode could also count as the eventual flashback episode showing how Lucifer and Lilith met, the whole apple thing, and the war between God and Lucifer's forces. Charlie could learn the shocking truth about how something really went down compared to the version she was told/led to believe.

A episode in Heaven where we see Sir Pentious getting use to Heaven while he and Emily deal with Lute. Like I brought up in my first season 2 episode idea post, they could decide to disobey Sera's orders and try to contact Charlie to show that redeeming sinners is possible.

Alastor cashes in the favor Charlie owes him by asking her to show her a legendary item or place, which leads to Charlie taking him to a special area. In no time shenanigans happen like something gets stolen or gets out of the room, causing the two to clean up the mess before something bad happens. Along with seeing Charlie and Alastor bond, especially if we get more of Al's life in such an episode, there would be a twist at the end where we find out this was part of Alastor's plan/mission as someone else was able to get in the special area get either another item, read something from a powerful book, or something else mysterious. Maybe Mimzy steals something in it and we get some development from her and she joins the hotel.

An episode about Niffty and her backstory. She didn't get any serious development in season 1, and such a premise was one of the scrapped ideas for the original HH season 1. I could see this being a good episode that is more entertaining then doing anything to advance the main story.

Speaking of which, another scrapped HH episode had Angel getting kidnapped and Husk and co. go searching for him, especially Husk. That would be a GREAT episode to have airing before the season finale.

A crazed Lute performs the Extermination attack of Hell earlier than scheduled. The events here could lead to the season finale, as I could see the Vee's attacking the weakened Charlie and the other characters after they have just dealt with the angelic forces.

The finale would be a battle between the hotel crew and the Vees, where maybe near the end Emily and other heavenly forces come to aid Charlie' side. I can see it ending with the Vees being punished by Charlie like maybe Val and Vox temporarily lose their Overlord titles (though Velvette getting out of it somehow) but Heaven as an apology for Lute's actions says that while the angels are currently debating on the topic, they will hear out Charlie's redemption plan again if she can redeem another sinner or two without aid from her father or and demons/angels before the end of a set deadline (AKA the season 3/4 finale). The season ends with everyone being happy until they are surprised by the appearance of Lilith at the hotel.

Another good thing about having season 2 focus o these things is that it will mean other, bigger stories will have to be told in later seasons and while currently mixed about Helluva Boss' planned 4 season run, I LOVE the idea of Hazbin Hotel having a lot of seasons.

They will. There are already programs being put in place to take care of them once they're off the Isle. Maverick is personally overseeing the construction of these and providing information about each descendant so that they know what to expect.

She originally didn't want to send any of them because of how she worries for them, but after hearing what Mim did to Malachi and how he went to Yen Sid's house begging to be killed, she realized that she needed to. She can't keep all of them safe, not under the barrier, not without spilling family blood. So she's going to send them away.

The fact that Malachi (and later Mildred) end up having the times of their lives and the most freedom they've ever had in the ICU and a psych ward for mutants really says a lot.

The Murder of Sarit Ahmed Reveals Israel’s Failure to Protect the Arab LGBTQ Community

Welfare officials admit Israel needs to do more to protect LGBTQ Arabs, after an 18-year-old Druze woman was killed by her brother after leaving a shelter to stay with relatives

Some three weeks ago, 18-year-old Sarit Ahmed approached police with a request for protection. Ahmed, whom police suspect was murdered by her brother because of her sexual orientation, feared her life was in danger.

She was sent in a taxi to a shelter for young women at risk. Ahmed didn't enter the gates, however. Instead, she went to stay with her sister and family, feeling that she would be safer there. She was shot dead on Friday on a road near Yarka, a Druze town in the north.

Police have not arrested any suspects, and still looking for her brother. According to police sources, the brother can be linked to the attack. Ahmad's two brothers were convicted of threatening her life after she alerted police in 2020.

Welfare officials have said the case highlights the need for a system to help LGBTQ Arabs who are in danger that goes beyond placing them in shelters. Some options might be using the witness protection program, which would allow them to change their identity and move abroad. Another option would be resettlement in another country under the auspices of the UN. These solutions are usually reserved for Palestinians who have fled to Israel, and are very rarely used.

Ahmed's two brothers, Ihab and Said bin Samer Ahmed, both served prison terms for sending death threats to Sarit. Their indictment said one of them had offered 200,000 shekels ($56,000) for her murder. Another brother threatened to "stab her with a knife" and then act "as if nothing had happened," according to the indictment. Following the threats, she was transferred to a shelter due to concerns for her safety.

Ahmed began living at a home for at-risk girls when she was 15 under a court order. When she was 18, she was transferred to another shelter, but left after two months, along with two friends.

Shelter staff reported the incident to the police, sources say, and tried to convince her to stay in the shelter. Ahmed and her friends "came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work out with their families," a welfare official told Haaretz. “They would stay in the shelter for another month and then what? They decided not to hide forever.

“She wanted to fulfill herself like any 18-year-old," the official said. "She was locked in one shelter under a court order for three years, and then in another. Sarit was opinionated and a feminist, she understood the world she was in. There is a limit to how much you can put these women in shelters and incarcerate them. This does not solve the problem."

According to investigators, Ahmed had returned to her family shortly after leaving the shelter and stayed there for about six months. Her brothers had already been released from prison. She continued to be in contact with the shelter she had lived in, and had recently reported an increase in death threats to the police, who ordered her to return to the shelter. Ahmed refused to live in hiding again, and during the last two weeks of her life had stayed with her sister and her family, who kept her secure in a nearby village, until she was killed on Friday.

The case is similar to a similar one in 2019, when a young Arab woman receiving gender affirmation therapy was attacked and seriously wounded by her brother outside a designated shelter for LGBTQ youth in Tel Aviv. In this case too, her brothers were previously accused of threatening her.

During a Knesset hearing last week, it was revealed that the Welfare Ministry employs only one social worker dedicated to helping LGBTQ Arabs. Arwa Adam, director of Arab LGBTQ organization Beit Al-Mim, said in the Knesset that about six months ago that the Social Equality Ministry approved the opening of a shelter for the LGBTQ Arab community, but had not actually implemented it.

According to Aguda – Israel's LGBTQ Task Force, on Saturday, the number of calls to the Arabic hotline have doubled since the murder. Adam added that "the callers wants to unload, because they don't have a framework in which to share it".

born & raised in a small town in michigan. shanley's childhood was as 'normal' as you could imagine. one straight out of a disney film with a loving mother and father and two sisters (older & younger) who protected her. like your typical middle child, shanley did everything she could to stand out, putting on performances with her sisters and making sure to be the director, the producer & the lead. she refused to be in anyone's shadow - making sure to leave an impression on everyone in every room she walked in. in school, shanley never cared about her studies - doing her best to pass her classes (but girly is smart af,, think jess mariano from gilmore girls but *spoiler* actually graduates) and keep her in the extracurricular activities - volleyball & theater. she loved the attention & made it her goal to be the lead in almost every play , which always happened. loud & confident, she was the girl who made sure everyone around her was comfortable and not left out. definitely the one to call out the bully and protect the bullied. she was never scared of anything or anyone. it might be because of her parents who always reminded her to reach for the stars, nothing was impossible & if she fell, she would always have them to catch her. after high school, shanley knew school was not an option. only attending community college to have a back up plan and to please her parents. she received her associates degree in business management while taking pilates classes and completing a training program to become certified. soon after, winter house was proposed to the group & with this new found fame, shanley took it as an opportunity to chase her dreams. she moved to los angeles where she does press for the show & instruct classes three times a week.
