Since I made a Doom Patrol series idea (out of anger at how Paul Kupperberg's Doom Patrol run ends), here's a new addition I just wrote. Me trying to give Mento a more sympathetic backstory. I don't make him any less of a jerk or a negligent father, but I at least provide (in my eyes) a decent justification as to why he became the man he is. And it involves childhood trauma and intense self loathing.

Steve Dayton was born an only child, with high expectations and pressure put on him from a very young age. His parents were rich, and obsessed with the ideals of perfection and normalcy. Steve was diagnosed with quite a few mental health disorders as a kid (like autism, for example), but his parents always paid to silence the doctors. They couldn't believe their child was a "freak", when they were perfect and normal.

Due to this hostile environment, Steve's childhood was… unpleasant, to put it mildly. He was punished whenever he showed any traits dictating signs of abnormality. If he showed any interest in anyone besides women, he was punished. If he expressed his autistic traits, he was punished. If he even just lightly suggested that he disagreed with his parents, he was punished. They taught him that obedience is key, and normalcy is the goal of life. After years of abuse, steve began to believe it himself. He repressed all memory of his autism. He repressed his "freakish" thoughts and behaviors. He made himself the perfect golden boy of his family's dreams. And thus, Steve Dayton became known as the world's fifth richest man (and the world's biggest snob, depending who you asked).

But you know…the funny thing about repression is that it always leads to self loathing. And in Steve's case, it also lead to the development of his telekinetic powers. He began suffering traumatic migraines daily, throbbing pain brought on by 20+ years of repression. To alleviate the pain, he got his doctors to run all sorts of tests on him. And they discovered his psychokinetic powers through brain scans. Hoping to channel this power (and alleviate the burning pain in his skull), Steve goes along with them. This led to the creation of his psychic helmet, which channeled his excessive brainwaves into bursts of physical force.

Maybe a few years after all of this stuff happens, the Doom Patrol is created. And that's how Steve Dayton learns of, and subsequently falls in love with Rita Farr. Or, well, it's unclear. With how much Steve's repressed over the years, it's unclear if he liked her, or if she was merely the only member on the team he could let himself feel comfortable being seen with. The World's Fifth Richest Man, admiring a team of "freaks"? No, it couldn't be. He can't be different. He can't be! The self loathing and repressed feelings only got worse and worse.

With Rita and the Doom Patrol in his life (plus having to look after Beast Boy, a kid with just as many issues as him), Steve was able to manage his self loathing and mental anguish. But one day, the Doom Patrol died. Rita died at the hands of Madame Rouge. As did Robotman, Negative Man and The Chief. These losses sent Steve spiralling. He retreated in upon himself again. He began getting more migraines, and he turned to alcohol and cigarettes to cope. He began neglecting his son. Life lost all meaning, and he suffered in silence (his father and mother taught him never to show weakness in public).

When the New Doom Patrol was founded by Arani Desai, Steve paid them no mind. But when they came to him and told him there was a chance Rita was still alive, that's when Steve began to feel hope and joy again. For the first time ever, he had a chance at happiness again. He would not lose that. So he comes out of retirement as Mento, and helps the Doom Patrol track down Madame Rouge for answers. Sadly, Madame Rouge never get a chance to reveal anything. This left Steve heartbroken and miserable and more repressed than ever, a perfect candidate for Mr. Nobody to manipulate and control.

So that's how Mr. Nobody forcibly takes over Steve's body and forces him to declare war on the new Doom Patrol. For months, his actions and words weren't his own. But eventually, he's freed from the grip of Mr. Nobody. Around the same time, he gets reunited with Rita and the other members of the original Doom Patrol. And it's only at this point that Steve Dayton begins to be in a place where he can work on himself and his many, many issues.

one of my favorite things about zedaph is that on a server full of people that find strange and oft-overlooked minecraft mechanics or rare events and then see just how far they can push them in the name of spectacle or efficiency or world-breaking, zed is over here finding these mechanics in order to do the weirdest things he can think of in as entertaining a manner as possible

like i 100% have faith in zedaph's theoretical ability to be just as efficient or spectacular or world-breaking. if he wanted to do that stuff, i trust that he absolutely could. but thats so far from being his priority. instead, hes going to spend around a week of irl time focused entirely on eventually having the good luck to spawn in something insanely rare so that he can convert it into something even rarer, the result of which being something that 99% of the server reacts with complete and utter shock that it even exists in the first place, just because its zany and funny and he wanted to. and i love that

ngl, it's about quality over quantity for me. an npc can have a total of three minutes of screen time, but if they have a cool name, they can live rent free in my head and I'll spend several hours trying to decipher drawable features from a blurry screenshot of pixels

there is a vague hint of a story here, and that's because every time I try to play thi4f, I get incredibly frustrated with how Not Fun the game play is. like, is the story good? well. but it has a PLAGUE. that should've given it instant 'I'll replay this once a year' status in my heart, but the game play sucks so bad that I've never finished it. I can't believe Not Fun gameplay beat out my obsession with narrative plagues.

anyway, the idea is basically if the original era had a game with a plague centric narrative and some other stuff I liked out of thi4f thrown into a narrative blender, with a heavy dash of horror thrown in because some parts of the thief games were scarier to me than entire dedicated horror genre games.

hm. the fact that ford dreams about being famous and becoming this household name in the scientific community while also uh. not being very good at social interaction is soo fascinating to me. which further backs up my belief that it's not rlly about being famous, it's about the praise, it's about feeling like he's proven himself as "more than a freak" its about going "see! i am a productive member of society! i'm more than a freak and i'm more than my circumstances! i'm worth something!"

because let's be real here, i don't think ford "local recluse who was so isolated from the town he lived in that nobody noticed when his brother came in and took over his identity" pines would've even liked being famous very much! do you really think this guy would like being under a magnifying glass? i think he would just be really overwhelmed 24/7.

it makes me wonder how better world ford deals with it. he's still in contact with fiddleford in that dimension, does he leave a lot of the social stuff up to him? i mean, fiddleford managed to start a cult, so he could probably do it if he wanted too, but even then i don't think he'd be fully comfortable with it. is he a very private and isolated famous person? or does ford do it himself? how does he feel about it? i have a million questions about the better world dimension, it's so endlessly interesting to me. god what i would give to see what better world ford is up too.

there are all of 6 fics on ao3 that come up when you search the word “disabled” in the dead boy detectives fandom. I’m dealing with a fibromyalgia flare up rn so I’ve decided to come up with some (potential!) disability/condition/syndrome/etc. headcanons. enjoy!

(oh and just to note: I stayed away from conditions with obvious facial / appearance difference as no actors with facial / appearance difference were cast in the show and I was unsure if it would be appropriate. while I have experience with a lot of the following diagnoses, I do not claim to be an expert on any of them and do not intend for this to be used as a diagnostic tool. if you feel any of these are offensive/inappropriate, please message me and I’m happy to talk about it :) this is more just to encourage broader disability representation within the fandom!)

Edwin: autistic, PTSD (from hell), chronic pain/fibromyalgia (from his death/hell), minor visual impairment (not enough to need the hard-to-come-by testing needed for glasses when he was alive and so assumed the various limits/effects were normal. was told otherwise by Niko), would’ve had shingles if lived long enough

okay so starscream and jetfire in my custom continuity. they are just similar enough in personality but opposite in likes/dislikes that they Do Not like each other.

they tolerate each other for skyfire's sake lol. teamed up once or twice when someone was being mean to skyfire to scare the scrap out of them lmaooooo.

when starscream came back after skyfire's crash jetfire was the only one who believed that he didn't cause skyfire's crash/disappearance because of the twin bond. jetfire defended starscream when the latter was charged with attempted murder, and jetfire may have had an attempt on his life made by Senator-hired hitmen. . . or two. . . or three. . .

then the revolution happens and jetfire busts starscream out of jail. jetfire joins the ascenticon movement while starscream goes back home. and when the newly named autobots split off from the ascenticons jetfire follows optimus. starscream joins the decepticons along with his trine, his siblings, and their trines.

and during the war when skyfire is missing they are in a very interesting dynamic of both being Air Commanders for their respective faction, both not getting along, both kinda wanting to kill to other but not doing so because if jetfire kills starscream skyfire will get really upset, and if starscream kills jetfire that will kill skyfire as well.

and they get to earth and realize hey this is where skyfire crashed and team up to find him. when they find him jetfire takes skyfire back to the ark and starscream goes back to the decepticon base to figure out where to go from here. does he stay with the cons? does he leave and go to the twins? could he convince his family to come with him if he leaves?

you know what guys. after this whole thing goes down, i hope we get the ACTUAL kamiyama school festival and it is a very good comparison to the first one. where we can see clearly how much mizuki has grown since that first event in january 2021, since that first school festival in middle school.

and i hope mizuki gets to have fun with her friends and can hang out with ena. and i hope ena has fun too. i hope she gets to tease akito, forge bonds with her classmates at the fried squid stall, and hopefully get roped into a dumb show with the oddballs 1 2. i hope this is ena’s pandemonium. i hope we all can have a little bit of joy and whimsy while getting to see how much the gang’s lives have changed at this point.

and i hope rui is a little worried for mizuki — i sincerely hope he is somewhere in mizu5, quietly waiting by the rooftop like he always has for her. but by the end of the schoolfes event he can look at mizuki, her whole face bright as all eight students in our little kamikou main cast gang come down from the rooftop (for one last time maybe, but we don’t talk about graduation in front of rui… unless ofc we bring it up this event) and he can say “you’ve come such a long way, haven’t you, mizuki? i’m happy for you.”

That he shows his prowess and uncanniness and abyssal hunger because that’s the only way how? Yes. he is hungry and wants a fight. Look at him. He’s off. Broken now.
