Hydrogen Hub Coming to Georgia?
New Post has been published on https://www.georgiagassavings.com/blog/hydrogen-hub-coming-to-georgia/
Hydrogen Hub Coming to Georgia?
Hydrogen, the Great Green Energy Contender
Because Georgia must pipe-in all it’s natural gas, developing hydrogen as a clean alternative fuel will benefit both residents and the environment. Find out what all the hydrogen hub fuss is about!
There’s been a lot of chatter in the energy press recently about so-called ‘hydrogen hubs’. You might have caught some – and they were probably wrapped up in jargon about natural gas rates, energy companies, and unreadable stats, right? Well, now’s the time to clear off the cobwebs! Because it’s coming to a state near you – your state, in fact! That’s right, Georgia will likely play a pivotal role in the development of hydrogen as a clean energy source, as we look for the best alternatives to fossil fuels. So let’s take a no-frills, plain-english look at what all the hydrogen hub fuss is about.
What’s so Great about Hydrogen?
You might be wondering – what’s the deal with all this hydrogen hysteria? Well, it’s all about the push for greener energy. Because the switch to electric power simply isn’t feasible in some industries, like freight, aviation, and energy generation. Batteries simply take up too much space! Hydrogen, however, potentially offers a neat alternative.
That’s because it turns out that hydrogen, which produces no carbon when it’s burned, can be blended in with natural gas and still pack a power-producing-punch. That’s great news! Because whilst natural gas produces far less CO2 than coal, it’s still a fossil fuel at the end of the day. So every little less of it helps.
In fact, the glorious state of Georgia has managed to blend hydrogen with natural gas at the record-setting proportion of 20%. That cut carbon emissions from a natural gas turbine by 7%. That’s promising, considering the substantially lower stats we’re seeing elsewhere. Of course, exactly how hydrogen will effect home natural gas usage isn’t fully worked out. One key problem pointed out by Forbes is that low hydrogen/natural gas blends are not safe for existing residential pipes or appliances. All the same, you’ll likely be hearing a lot more about hydrogen and its associated hubs over the coming years.
But Wait, What’s a Hydrogen Hub?
A ‘Hydrogen hub’ is what we call a cluster of facilities where this clean fuel alternative is produced, stored, and put to use. And the US is banking on them big time. It’s doling out over $7 billion to so-called ‘H2Hubs’ across the country, along with a new hydrogen production tax credit.
This funding is likely to prove critical when it comes to the future of hydrogen. As things stand, hydrogen clocks in at a cost-prohibitive $5 per kilogram. And we don’t make it in an especially energy-efficient way at the moment, either. But this level funding, and the commitment by Georgia, could help bring costs down to about $1 in 10 years.
So How Might Georgia’s Hydrogen Hub Efforts Affect Residents?
Well, the idea here is to boost state access to clean, reliable energy. And it’s going to generate a whole lot of economic buzz. We’re already seeing stiff competition amongst the US states to get ahead of this energy trend. This suggests that the industry at large is throwing its weight behind hydrogen as a genuinely dependable, efficient, and prosperous green energy alternative!
Keep Up with Georgia’s Hydrogen Hub News!
So stay tuned, folks! Because there’s big things coming down the natural gas pipeline. Is there a hydrogen hub coming to Georgia? Well, you can be sure our loyal readers will find out – so keep in the loop with www.GeorgiaGasSavings.com!

I think the thing that's important for us to remember is that cost volatility is actually all about fossil fuel dependency.
The more that we are dependent on fossil fuels, it means the more we are dependent on global events. As we saw with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as we see with the choices that come out of the UAE, as well as many other regions of the world, oil and gas development and drilling in Latin America, as well as in the United States. The more dependent we are on oil and gas, the more crazy our prices are going to be, and the more up and down our prices are going to be. And the fact that, for example, we have not developed electric or alternative energy vehicles earlier is one of the reasons why we pay such close attention to gas prices to begin with.
And we would not be as sensitive to the changes in energy costs if we weren't so fossil fuel dependent.
And Donald Trump knows that.
The oil and gas industry knows that.
And that is why they finance huge parts of lobbying our government in order to keep the country entirely dependent on fossil fuels.
Now, if you prefer gas cars and gas stoves, you're free to make that choice.
But what we haven't had is accessible and broad choices for something else. EVs have been in development, but for a very long time, they've been financially inaccessible to a lot of people in this country. The Inflation Reduction Act helped change that. We got huge tax breaks for both new and used EVs. If you're trying to buy one off your neighbor or whatever that may be, as well as many other things that are accessible, whether it's induction stoves, heat pumps for one's home, et cetera. But the oil and gas industry is deploying all of their political and special interest money towards one central goal, which is to keep virtually every American completely dependent on their product.
And Donald Trump is very closely aligned with them.
And not only that, but the larger point is that it's not a coincidence that his authoritarian tactics are tied to fossil fuels.
This is a global phenomenon.
And what we are seeing is authoritarianism is very, very closely linked with oil and gas interests around the world.
That's Putin, that's Trump. That's folks like Bolsonaro. That's a lot of the political instability we see out of Saudi Arabia, the UAE.
And I believe that it is not a coincidence, because you have one central industry that has a clear vested, both political and financial interest, and an authoritarian…that is also increasingly becoming politically unpopular, by the way, because the vast majority of Americans believe that the U.S. should start winding down our subsidization of the fossil fuel industry. They want to see clean energy alternatives available to them and financially accessible to them. And they understand that it's just more volatile to be so chained to fossil fuels.
And so the only way that you can really empower both financially a political sect, is through the fossil fuel industry, the oil and gas industry.
The Koch brothers are an oil and gas dynasty who had such large influence on our political system. They come from an oil and gas dynasty, or rather, came. One of them has passed, there's that, but then you see that link crossing across the world, and the ascent of authoritarianism, paired with the fact that every single one of them is very closely aligned to the fossil fuel industry.
And the ascent of the fossil fuel industry is not a coincidence. It's not a mistake.
And in fact, the democratization of our energy system, which is a means of production that has been privatized and concentrated into the hands of the very few, the democratization of our energy system means that people have the potential. We're doing this in Puerto Rico. When you have a battery pack on your house, when the power goes out, you're not as dependent on a central system. You have a backup reserve in case of an emergency, you can give energy to your neighbor.
This is what the democratization of our energy system looks like.
This is also what a fairer economic system that is less volatile for everyday people looks like as well.
And that is a direct threat to authoritarianism.
It's a direct threat to the extreme concentration of wealth in the hands of the very few.
But it also represents a shift for the betterment of mankind and our democracy.
—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, noting the link between the fossil fuel industry and authoritarian regimes

The Environmental Protection Agency unveiled a new proposal Thursday to cut greenhouse gas emissions from thousands of power plants burning coal or natural gas, two of the top sources of electricity across the United States. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), criticizing the “radical” proposal, issued his own scorched earth ultimatum on Wednesday ahead of the announcement.
Manchin, chair of the Senate Energy Committee and the top recipient of contributions from the oil and gas industry during the 2022 election cycle, vowed Wednesday to oppose every one of President Joe Biden’s nominees for the EPA “until they halt their government overreach.”
“This Administration is determined to advance its radical climate agenda and has made it clear they are hellbent on doing everything in their power to regulate coal and gas-fueled power plants out of existence, no matter the cost to energy security and reliability,” Manchin wrote in a statement released Wednesday.
Tumblr media
The EPA proposal would require most fossil fuel-fired power plants to slash their greenhouse emissions by 90% between 2023 and 2040. The EPA projects the emissions reduction would deliver up to $85 billion in climate and health benefits over the next two decades by heading off premature deaths, emergency room visits, asthma attacks, school absences and lost workdays.
“Alongside historic investment taking place across America in clean energy manufacturing and deployment, these proposals will help deliver tremendous benefits to the American people — cutting climate pollution and other harmful pollutants, protecting people’s health, and driving American innovation,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said in a statement issued Thursday.
By 2035, the Biden administration aims to shift all electricity in the U.S. to zero-emission sources including wind, solar, nuclear and hydropower, Roll Call reported. In a written statement, Manchin warned the administration’s “commitment to their extreme ideology overshadows their responsibility to ensure long-lasting energy and economic security.”
Manchin is up for reelection during the 2024 election cycle, but he has not yet announced whether he will run.
Last month, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) announced his campaign for Manchin’s seat. The Democrat-turned-Republican is among the most popular governors in the country and leads a state former President Donald Trump won by nearly 40 percentage points in 2020.
Manchin has hammered the Biden administration in recent weeks for its implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act, the president’s signature climate change bill that the Democratic senator was instrumental in shaping.
“Neither the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law nor the IRA gave new authority to regulate power plant emission standards. However, I fear that this Administration’s commitment to their extreme ideology overshadows their responsibility to ensure long-lasting energy and economic security and I will oppose all EPA nominees until they halt their government overreach,” Manchin said in his Wednesday statement.
What Manchin did not disclose in his statement, however, is that the EPA proposal would jeopardize one West Virginia coal facility that’s particularly lucrative for Manchin’s family business, Enersystems Inc., POLITICO reported. Enersystems delivers waste coal to the Grant Town power plant, which was reportedly already struggling financially, troubles that are expected to deepen with the strict new climate proposal.
Manchin personally received $537,000 from Enersystems last year, according to POLITICO’s analysis of personal financial disclosures filed with the U.S. Senate, and he has been paid more than $5 million by the company since he was first elected in 2010. His son, Joe Manchin IV, now runs Enersystems. The Senator’s campaign has also benefited from political contributions from Enersystems, OpenSecrets reported last year.
“This is going to make it harder for them to stay around. You won’t find written anywhere in the rule that this is supposed to be putting coal plants out of business, but just do the math,” Brian Murray, director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University, told POLITICO.
In 2020, Manchin’s home state of West Virginia generated about 90% of its power from coal, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. By contrast, less than 20% of the energy generated nationally comes from coal. Many states, including neighboring Virginia, are phasing out coal by replacing it with natural gas.
While the U.S. may show signs of moving away from coal, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission told the Senate Energy Committee earlier this month that the country was not prepared to abandon coal and maintain a reliable energy system.
“Coal is more dependable than gas and yes, we need to keep coal generation available for the foreseeable future,” said Commissioner Mark Christie.
Manchin took another swipe at the EPA on Thursday during an energy committee hearing on permitting reform, when he accused the agency of preventing the development of carbon capture technology by denying companies the permits they need to trap captured carbon underground.
“Don’t tell me that you’re going to invest in carbon capture sequestration when we can’t get a permit to basically sequester the carbon captured,” Manchin said. “This is the game that’s being played. I know it, they know I know it, and we’re not gonna let them get away with it.”

“Reform UK’s climate denial undermines democracy." – London School of Economics. (17/06/24
Nigel Farage is “incredibly popular” because he speaks "common sense" says Reform candidate Robert Barrowcliffe.
Let's examine that statement a little closer, not by looking at Farage’s anti-immigration policies, his war against woke, or his Brexit credentials. Instead lets look at climate change and how Nigel Farage plans to protect us.
Only an idiot would argue the climate isn’t changing. That is now a given for all sensible people. From the 1300 who died during the annual Hajj in Saudi Arabia last week, where temperatures were 50 degrees Celsius, to the severe flooding across Europe this month where 120 people died and hundreds more are unaccounted for, the effects of climate change are all around us.
The Met Office says:
“Across the UK, we expect to see:
Warmer and wetter winters
Hotter and drier summers
More frequent and intense weather extremes
Globally things are even worse.
“UN chief says world is on ‘highway to climate hell’ as planet endures 12 straight months of unprecedented heat."  (CNN: 06/05/24)
As food and water supplies fail across Africa, huge swathes of people will be forced to migrate as a matter of life or death, and the majority will be heading for the rich countries of Europe, including Britain.
What does Nigel Farage and his Reform UK Party  propose to do to help us adapt and survive these new changes to our environment? The first thing of note is that “climate change” is not mentioned once in the Reform manifesto and neither is “global warming”. It’s as if the problem doesn’t even exist!
More concerned with saving money, than saving the planet, Farage promises to “scrap” subsidies for renewable energy development, to “fast-track” more licences for North Sea gas and oil extraction and to begin fracking.
When the tide of immigration to the UK becomes overwhelming, when peoples homes are flooded again and again, when the old and frail are dying of heat stroke let's remember the "common sense" attitude of Nigel Farage and the billionaire backers of his Reform UK  Party and give them the popularity they deserve.

London City airport expansion given green light
The UK government has approved London City Airport’s plan to increase passenger numbers by almost a third, prompting anger from environmentalists who say it will increase carbon emissions.
The airport was seeking to increase capacity to 9 million passengers a year from 6.5 million by 2031. A document published on the government website on Monday said the following:
The Secretaries of State agree with the Inspectors’ conclusions, and agree with their recommendation. They have decided to grant planning permission, subject to revised conditions that maintain the existing Saturday curfew period.
The decision is one of the first major infrastructure planning decisions taken by the new Labour government elected in July. Since taking office, ministers have promised to streamline planning processes and boost construction across all sectors, but have been forced to cancel some projects due to funding shortfalls.
London City Airport said it welcomed the increase in the passenger cap but was disappointed that the government did not approve the extension of Saturday opening hours, saying it would force airlines to be slower to introduce cleaner and quieter aircraft. A government spokesperson said in a statement:
We are committed to securing the long-term future of the aviation sector in the UK while protecting our environmental obligations.
Environmental think tank Green Alliance said the decision was disappointing and set a worrying precedent for the new government, although a local group said the scrapping of Saturday afternoon flights was a big win for residents.
The plan was originally rejected in July 2023 by Newham Council, which governs the area where the airport is located, due to a number of objections such as the potential impact of the expansion on climate, air quality and noise.
The New Labour government has said it wants to take a “growth focused” approach to the planning system and the decision is likely to test how it handles environmental concerns. The government’s independent watchdog, the Committee on Climate Change, has said airport expansion at present is incompatible with the UK’s goal of achieving net zero by 2050.
While the government has said the airport should retain its existing 24-hour weekend rest period from 12.30 p.m. on Saturday to 12.30 a.m on Sunday, airlines will be able to operate an additional three flights in the mornings until 7 a.m.
The additional three flights will be limited to newer and quieter aircraft such as the Airbus SE A220 and Embraer SA E2.
