Lived through my emergency mouth surgery!
Lightly terrorized the medical staff by cheerfully telling them ketamine is a drug you can literally physically outrun before surgery, then getting up and walking to the front room unassisted way before I should have afterwards.

Some species of frugivorous bats have faces that look so much like that of a horse that I'm surprised no one in the spec-evo community has tried to create "realistic pegasi" using them as a base

I really wish I wouldn’t get told that a decision I make is wrong due to common beliefs that have not been deeply researched.
I recently went on a mostly fruit diet with no animal products because I want to heal my rosacea, which I discovered is linked to many autoimmune diseases, one of the most prevalent in my family is type 2 diabetes.
Upon doing research about skin problems and why they manifest, I came across information about the kidneys and poor filtration through the liver which leads to waste being taken out on the skin if your organs are not working together to remove the waste normally.
I did my research to understand what could work to finally heal my rosacea since it is so deeply misunderstood and judged. All my life I’ve been criticized because of it until I got older and stopped caring so much. But more than just aesthetic purposes, I want to heal my body from the inside out and it causes so much anger for me at times when I open up about these choices I’m making to better myself and I get told I’m not consuming enough protein or that I need to eat meat or eggs or whatever it may be that common media shares.
Our biology closely resembles frugivores, not carnivores. The only way we “safely” consume meat and animal products is by cooking, pasteurizing, or doing some sort of process to make it edible. That, to me, doesn’t make any sense. We get told to eat fruits and vegetables when we’re sick because they heal so wouldn’t it make sense to consume food we know to be healing most of the time?
How can we use it as medicine and then turn around and say “oh you can’t eat too much fruit because of the sugar” as if simple fruit sugar is equivalent to processed refined sugar… also, all our cells need sugar. Our body runs on glucose… which is sugar. Literally everything we consume gets transformed into glucose. Insulin gets released into the bloodstream to help transport glucose to our organs so we have energy and can function. So even foods that are low in sugar get turned into glucose… which again, is sugar. Processed sugar, like any processed food, is bad for you. It is not the same as eating raw fruit - the food the Earth created for us to consume. (Is it really that surprising that the food we can naturally consume is the most healing food for us? It’s almost as if our biology, which resembles frugivores in nature, is made for the consumptions of fruits. Amazing.)
This whole idea that protein is everything was not emphasized until the last 1000 years or so. Protein was not emphasized as the most important source of sustenance for all time. Fruits and vegetables were. There are entire cultures that thrive off of fruits and vegetables and do not struggle with the same level of disease as we do.
It’s so annoying that veganism or any sort of diet with a strong focus on fruits and vegetables gets criticized so much. I’m not pushing my choices on anyone and I wish their choices didn’t get pushed on me, especially coming from people who are currently struggling with health issues and are trying multiple protocols that are not working. It doesn’t make sense to take advice from someone else who is trying to figure it out and is not succeeding yet I’m being criticized personally for taking advice from sources who have healed themselves and others.
No one will know my body better than me. I have tried to get assistance from doctors and dermatologists. None of them have helped. Some have even made things worse by giving me medications that suppressed my symptoms for a few weeks only for them to come back stronger and then I got prescribed a more intense medication with tons of side effects. If I cannot trust in myself and intuitively listen to my body, then I will never heal. My body is my own. My choices are my own. Feel free to judge them when I am not around but keep your negativity to yourself. I’ve only being doing this for two days and I feel so much better, my digestion is better, and my rosacea is not flaring up. That cannot be a coincidence. Please stop listening to mass media and do your own research to heal your body and mind.

Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis)
"They are the only nocturnal, flying, fruit-eating bird in the world." (The kakapo, also nocturnal, is flightless) - Wikipedia
eBird sightings: 3,559; IUCN Redlist Rating: Least Concern
Beaten: Blakiston's Fish Owl, African Penguin, Bonin Petrel, Pygmy Nuthatch, Rook
Also known locally as the guácharo, these birds are the only extant member of their family and order. Fossils of other oilbirds have been found, but this species is the only one that has survived until the present era. They've got excellent eyesight and use it to find fruit, but oilbirds also use echolocation to help navigate. As they've been found to roost and nest in caves, this is likely the most important place for their echolocation.
These birds got their name from the fact the chicks are so heavy with fat that they made good lanterns. Most flying birds are heaviest before leaving the nest, but oilbird chicks weigh up to 21 oz, which is substantially heavier their adult weight of 12-17 oz.
Venezuela's first national monument is The Guacharo Cave, sitting as a centerpiece of its national park. According to some estimates there may be 15,000 or more birds living there.

He’s also shocked to death when he sees giant spiders in the goblin camp and absolutely horrified when he finds the nest beneath Moonhaven. Never in his many lives has he seen spiders that big. He thought those stories were fake. He’s like there’s no way that should even be possible, what IS that

Some fic! Inspired by a conversation nix and I had last night. Accidental baby swap, a fun trope even before you add interspecies drama into it.
~~
“So,” Jahra said as they walked into the crafthouse, passing by the pot and bowl makers with polite chirps before settling next to their spouse, the pair exchanging nudges under their jaws, “according to the necromancers Lingi is far too dry, we need to get them moist.”
“Of course they are,” Kyrii sighed, moving a few kittens to off Jahra onto themself. “We should’ve guessed. It’s already dry around here.”
“Swear I’ve heard the Osmosians complain about it,” Tyrye called from the other side of the room.
“Good food, nice enough people,” Ruafi added, “but it’s impossible to work in this weather.” The rest of the crafters trilled their agreement, as if they weren’t managing just fine.
“There’s Lenopan on the planet, they know about humidity,” Kyrii said. “The Tennysons have a few in their line, we could ask Pierce or the Councilmember go to them for information?”
“Sounds good to me, I certainly don’t know how to handle this myself,” Jahra said, scratching gently at the little naga wrapped around their tail, a thick flake of skin falling away under their nail. “Kuey suggested getting them a large dish of water, just until we can get something else worked out.” Immediately the crafthouse burst into sound, every adult automatically going into the typical ‘of course my work is the best, no, don’t even look at theirs, awful stuff, what did you just say about my work’ spiel. Jahra snickered at the familiar behavior as Kyrii shouted against the tide.
“I can make my own kittens’ pottery, thank you-!”

“We may have solved the problem!” Kamini started as her preferred mate barged in, automatically drawing herself up as large as possible. Like a switch flipping he backed away, making himself small and flashing his belly. He stayed like this until she had settled back into a neutral position, tail relaxing from where it had coiled around her latest clutch. “I spoke to Sandip, like I said.”
“And what did he have to say,” she asked, accepting the furry little bundle he passed her way and replacing her with the rest of the clutch, where she was quickly half-absorbed into the mass of scales.
“He showed me how to tell a creature’s diet by its teeth,” Ankit said, cautiously coming to join her. “Judging by them, Mridula is probably eating too much meat? We need to get more fruit and green things in her.” With a relieved sigh, Kamini stroked a finger down the hatchling’s little head, gut tightening at fur far duller and rougher than it had been when she’d first found them.
“Is that what it is, tiny one,” she crooned softly, “you just need more plants?” There was no answer, just big green-gold eyes blinking up at her from the gold and amber of her clutchmates. Still, the direction was enough to bring peace to her heart.
“Dear one?” Ankit relaxed truly now, with her calm and happy and unlikely to eat him. “Do you want me to go to the market for you?”
“Yes,” she said, leaning a bit of her weight against him as pleased acknowledgement and thanks. “Grab as much of everything you can reasonably afford. Surely from there we can find out what she needs.”

It’s almost like chimpanzees eat 60%+ of their total diet as fruit and we share 99% of their DNA or something. Funny how that works.
“Paleo” dieters maligning fruit has to be the silliest and most ironic case of Pseudoscience ever.
We’re frugivores.
It’s why money-grubbing capitalists can hijack our natural inclinations with sugar-stuffed Hostess cakes and other industrialized processed things and cause us nerve damage and kidney damage. We’re sugar hounds, and when fruit was all we had access to, that was fine! We even lost the ability to synthesize Vitamin C, which ... one of the only other few animals who lacks that? Fruit bats.
By contrast: Cats are obligate carnivores. Their tongue/brain literally doesn’t have receptors for sweetness.
Dogs do because they’re more akin to bears (who love honey, berries) quite literally: they’re both in Caniformia. You rarely hear about wolves snacking on berries, but it does happen. (it’s more show-y to film them collectively hunting deer, when that’s not their preferred prey food, either.)
Fun fact: both the avocados and the tomatoes making up guac and salsa mentioned above are also fruit. I had some bangin’ grilled zucchini today, which is also fruit. Now I want some pumpkin soup or some butternut squash soup. Also both fruit. Some people make it a lifestyle and maximize fruit. (fruitarians eat 70 to 80%) No idea if chimps have access to any not-as-sweet fruits......
Research has shown that pleasure affects nutrient absorption. In a 1970s study of Swedish and Thai women, it was found that when the Thai women were eating their own (preferred) cuisine, they absorbed about 50% more iron from the meal than they did from eating the unfamiliar Swedish food. And the same was true in the reverse for the Swedish women. When both groups were split internally and one group given a paste made from the exact same meal and the other was given the meal itself, those eating the paste absorbed 70% less iron than those eating the food in its normal state.
Pleasure affects our metabolic pathways; it’s a facet of the complex gut-brain connection. If you’re eating foods you don’t like because you think it’s healthy, it’s not actually doing your body much good (it’s also unsustainable, we’re pleasure-seeking creatures). Eat food you enjoy, it’s a win-win.
