I Cannot Breath (So I Must Sing): Prologue

(Fair warning before we start, I'm used to writing for fandoms of like 12 to 30 people, so grace my darlings is all I ask)

The rapping on the door woke Alastor out of his daze. An involuntary huff leaving his lips before he beckoned the disrupter into his office. The whole of the radio station knew he was not to be disturbed if the door was closed. Meaning the fool on the other side was either from the outside or stupid.  

“What’s the word Al?”  

Both, Mickey was both stupid and not an employee. He was an unfortunate drinking buddy of his. Alastor would have preferred that he not see Mickey at all, but they were both regulars at the same club, and Alastor was loath to lose his favorite hunting ground.  

“I don't know my good man” The smile on Alastor's face was tight, his movements stiff from being sedentary too long as he stood up, gesturing for the carrot top to sit. ” You’re the one knocking on my office door.”  

 "I know you’re busy, what with the radio show and the radio drama and all that so I’ll keep this brief”  

‘So, God is merciful after all’ he thought . 

“But I think I gotta real good opportunity for you”  

That was another reason Mickey was still around, despite his annoying tendencies and lack of decorum he was a nice guy. Every time Alastor got half a mind to just kill Mickey and pull the nagging thorn of an acquaintance out of his side, he’d hear wind of the great deeds Mickey did for those around him. A tire change in the middle of the night here, escorting a lady home there, getting some poor downtrodden fellow a job. Mickey would give you the shirt off his back and the shoes off his feet. Given he remembered how to untie the laces.  

A true saint of a man, just a little simple.  

Alastor couldn’t fault him for that.  

“An opportunity?” Mickey was always looking out for those he deemed friends, another one of his kind yet annoying traits.  

“Yeah, you know I have that gig down at the theater? I do handyman work for em sometimes. Well for their new production they got this broad all the way from France over here to open it.” Mickey’s right hand gesticulated as he spoke, while he leaned his left arm against Alastor’s desk. 

“Oh I’m aware, the news has been all a flutter over here at the station. Supposedly she’s quite a big deal in Europe.” A flutter was a bit of an understatement, it was all he practically heard about. He was getting damn near sick of hearing about it. He could appreciate a love for the finer arts, but this was getting ridiculous.  

“Yeah so I was working there the other day and I got to fixing the door on her dressing room. It was leaning and ya couldn’t shut it all the way. See they can’t have any windows open back there so the humidity in the summertime does a number on door frame, not to mention the..” 

“Mickey.” The smooth tin in Alastor’s voice was not reflective of his feelings. This was getting rather tedious rather quickly.  

“Right , right , right so anyway we ended up talking while I was there, and she took a liking to me. So I asked her iffin she’d be up for doing an interview and she said sure! So I figured I’d come down and see if you or one of your colleagues would wanna talk to her on air? Since she’s such a big deal and all. Maybe get some new listeners ya know?”  

“Well well, I must say this is a very good opportunity. What have I done to earn such a gracious offer dear friend.” Oh this was too good. Not only had he been given a ratings hit on a golden platter, he would also get the opportunity to rub it in the faces of all those smug self-righteous bastards who’d been blabbering his ears off the past few weeks.  

Mickey had certainly earned himself a drink, next time they were out together. 

“Ahh it’s nothing! You’re my oldest drinking buddy it’s the least I could do for ya. So should I be expecting you or someone else?”  

“I’ll be taking this one on old friend, you went to so much trouble to get it for me after all” Alastor was not liked by most of his colleagues. While he was certain passing the opportunity on would have put him in their good graces, he didn’t much care if they liked him. Considering the shows he was in were the most popular by far, they'd be better off kissing his ass, not the other way around.  

“Eh like I said don't' t mention it, You free tomorrow? “ 

“As a bird” Alastor had a few things he needed to finish tomorrow, but they could either be done tonight or the day after. He’d make time for this. 

“Okay meet me at the theater at 2 “ 

“I’ll see you there”

"Evan."

Tommy stares at him, mouth slightly open and Buck flashes back to that morning in the cafe when he thought he fumbled his chance at something great. But Tommy took another chance with him, as insane as inviting him to his sister's wedding was. Buck shakes his head, trying to dispel the memory and smiles at Tommy.

"I'm serious," he replied, grinning broadly. "Come with me to our wedding," he couldn't help it, the memory fresh on his mind.

Tommy caught on pretty fast, his eyebrows shot up and he started laughing. "Does that mean it's my turn to meet your sister?"

Buck's smile only grew as Tommy played along. "You already know a lot of the people who will be there and I need someone to dance with," he reached out and took Tommy's hand, whose eyes softened just as it did back at the cafe.

"I guess this time there won't be any free food," he replied and pulled Buck's hand up to his lips to press a kiss to the back of it. "Hold that thought tho," Tommy added, index finger pointing at Buck before he got up and disappeared into the garage.

"Babe?" Buck called out and somehow he wasn't nervous or anxious that Tommy left the dining table just after he accidentally proposed.

"Yeah, so my reaction earlier was not disbelief that you're asking," Tommy called out from around the corner and, well, that intrigued Buck as he cranes his neck to get a glimpse of his boyfriend.

Tommy walked back in through the door, one hand held at his back and Buck looked at it then back up at Tommy's smiling face, his mouth slowly opening as he put the pieces together.

They both started chuckling as Tommy sat back down and Buck, because he couldn't help himself, held up a finger and got up, walking towards a kitchen drawer, pulling it almost completely out and taking out a small velvet box.

As Buck sat back at the table across from Tommy, he bites his lip while slowly pushing the box forward, just as Tommy did the same with his own velvet box. "On the count of three?" Buck asked.

"Yes," Tommy breathed out and Buck stopped.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

I was baffled by this plot direction with Eddie same as you fam...

But I'm also SO intrigued.

Remember how this season started? WIth Christopher two-timing girls from school and Eddie being like "Oh no who did he get this from?"

Chris is emulating his father.

He got this from Eddie.

Not because he thinks his dad is a cheater, but because Eddie has set an example of how relationships with women work.

In Christophers early childhood his dad was always away and his mum was sad and struggling to cope. Then his dad returned and his mum suddenly left. Then his dad brings his mum back as a Christmas gift and bam, suddenly they're a family now. Not a family again, because they never been a family unit before. Everything should be perfect and yet something still feels off.

We know that while Eddie is ready to settle into married life, Shannon is not.

I personally think that when Shannon turned Eddie down, she did it because she knows that if not for Christopher being born, her and Eddie would never have stayed together. That while they love each other and Chris, they were never IN love and she wanted them both to have a chance at happiness.

Actually, come to think of it.... Holy shit... I don't think Eddie has ever BEEN in love.

Not that we've seen anyway!

He married Shannon because she got pregnant and every relationship he's had since then has been an exercise in Eddie trying to cram a new woman into his life and make her fit, only to panic, retreat or self sabotage when she doesn't. Or worse, when she DOES fit and he realises he doesn't love her.

Christopher has grown up and been there for all of this, and it's informing how he handles relationships with girls. As though they are interchangeable. As a means to fit someone into your life and make them your partner rather than find someone you actually like and who makes you happy.

I don't think this it's a coincidence we are where we are now at this point in the show. We've been building to this all season and it needs to happen because otherwise Eddie is going to keep repeating the same pattern over and over and over again for the rest of his life.

Going for 'safe' people he feels like will fill a hole in his heart while never allowing himself to fall in love so that he can never be hurt when they leave or he loses them.

He doesn't love Marisol. He wasn't in love with any of them. I think he loved Shannon but mostly because she was the mother of his child.

Eddie cheating is just another way this cycle is manifesting itself and once again he's going for a woman not because he's interested in who she is or getting to know her...but because she looks like Shannon.

Thinking maybe he can fix the mistakes of the past and be a different version of himself. This version of Shannon won't leave him and he won't abandon her. This one will stick around and yeah he won't love her but it will fix everything and they'll be a family right?

Eddie may not even be consciously aware that he's doing this.

Eddie needs to blow his life up and break this cycle.

Buck was a sex addict because he couldn't deal with his own self worth issues.

Eddie is a serial monogamist who can't let himself fall in love with anyone for fear of being hurt.

Interesting how their arcs mirror each other huh?

I don't think people seem to understand that they could've given up. We know fox was blocking bisexual Buck and that probably means they were blocking buddie, so they could've given up. Buddie is a love story. Their devotion to each other is canon. There isn't anything the show can do that's gonna convince me they don't love each other. But they could've given up at any point. Backed off, actually give any other love interest a fighting chance, double down on them being best friends and not make it bigger. They choose not to. They kept adding to this love story as best as they could. They are best friends. They are partners. They are family. They would die for each other but they also have fun together. They have one braincell they keep pingponging between them. They love each other. That's a fact. That will always be a fact. They are each other's person. And now we are at a place where that can be explicitly explored. It's a slowburn. It's a network slowburn. The desire to rip your hair out comes with it but it makes the moment they finally get their shit together that much sweeter. We're getting there. Somehow y'all had more hope when all we had to go on was a couch. Buck is actually queer now. This time last year Buck and Eddie were getting a comphet ending. Now one of them is actually queer. We're gonna get there, but they are not just gonna trip into a relationship because they are too careful with buddie as a friendship to not address the issues and make things natural before getting them together because everyone involved in this madness knows what they have in their hands. They know once they get buddie together it's forever, they're not gonna rush into it now they have actual room to play.

I see where the 'dragons are nukes' people are coming from in terms of the total devastation dragons are capable of in battle and in the hands of those that want to use them in such a way.

However, dragons are clearly meant to symbolize more than just their raw power in wartime. dragons are fire made flesh, dragons are Summer, dragons are flight and freedom, dragons are playful and warm, dragons are life in defiance of winter. dragons are the strength needed to break chains, topple corruption, and burn evil itself. dragons are flaming swords and lightbringers. dragons are loyalty and protectiveness. dragons are passion and mystery and magic.

dragons are the opposite end of the magical spectrum to the others.

and dragons are, above all else, lizard cats that like to bask in the sun and get scratches on the underside of their chins.

Imagine putting your heart and soul into a project because you love the source material, but have to work around certain scenarios because they won’t really translate well to screen, which is fine because you’ve gotten help/blessings from the ORIGINATOR of said source material so you’re feeling really good about everything. Maybe you wish you could change somethings, but you’re proud of the story that you’ve told and how true it is to the HEART OF THE STORY…

Only to then read that some of the fans of said source material think the show is awful and (somehow??) worse than the bad movie adaptations that disregarded the heart of the material (the actually STORY), all because of a casino and either adding or dropping minor story beats.

'bard's lament' this 'bard's lament' that'.. it was a pretty solid episode like pls.. all the pieces are on the board. things are lined up. things can and probably will still Happen. like rip to season 3 finale haters but im different lol. it seems SO hilariously dumb to even say anything about characters being ooc, things not happening as they 'should' or whatever tf like..... this very much unlike other IPs. some complaints simply can't apply. the people who play these characters actually personally OWN and wrote them in the first go around. and not only do they understand their characters intimately, they are doing what makes the story flow better in a new medium. which is not to say they are chopping down what's really important, they are actually condensing 4 hours of dice rolling and dick jokes into something coherent and less than half an hour long. they are making it work. and it is working. it's not perfect and i actually really do get some people's disappointment in some choices, but lbr some of them are 1) completely understandable when you take everything Critical Role is into account (kash, for one. i mean i wasn't too happy about it too but i do get it) and 2) things that are not resolved or can be further developed in the future (bard's lament can still happen, in some way; i can already come up with like, three ways -hehe nice-- it could happen in s4). i mean this is fucking season 3, hasn't all of this been said a thousand times over by now? seems pretty weird people are still doubting and not trusting these storytellers know what they're doing. like not only does the og campaign still exist as its own thing but also enjoying an adaptation for what it is is entirely possible. also? having fun is allowed and recommended, i mean, jesus christ

Every week we get a new layer of why Tim and Lucy work as a couple so well. This week was no exception. With Lucy recruiting her friends to come help her get Tim a better job. Including doing Smitty a favor to seal it. The slow burn we had for them has more than paid off IMO. Its proof every week we get to watch them. I’m honestly not sure why some are wanting more angst. We legit just got them. Also we had our angst early on this season. It was good and useful angst too. The best kind. It had its purpose and I enjoyed it immensely. It was productive. They don’t need lazy angst just to give them problems for no reason. They’re proving what a healthy relationship looks like. To be properly loved and respected by your partner. It reminds me of Castle and Beckett. One of the reasons I loved them so very much was they were one and done. The show continued around them as a couple. There was no unnecessary angst (except s8 but that’s whole another story if you watched it lol )

They just evolved and grew as a couple and characters together. That’s what’s happening with Tim and Lucy. It is possible to have your couple without unnecessary complications. Will they have bumps along the way? Of course that’s real life. But we’re watching them develop like a normal healthy couple. They can have challenges sure. To me the best part of them being together is they can face those things together, head on like the power couple we know they are. They’ve both grown so damn much since s1. Now they’re together. This is the fruits of that labor. Enjoy it. I sure as hell am. I can’t wait to see what else is to come for them.❤️
