So when the GFA was being set up David Trimble insisted on the titles being first and deputy first minister because he wanted unionism to be seen as "just ahead" and still have the facade of superiority but now that there's a nationalist first minister this is an issue and it should be referred to as ~joint first minister~

Top 5 Moments In History!
Ohhhh [suddenly all knowledge departs from my head]
Ask me for my Top 5
- I think way too often for no good reason about the fact that Bono went around Ireland, hyping up the Good Friday Agreement and had David Trimble & John Hume on stage, shaking hands. I know the Nobel Peace Price handshake photo is far more of a symbol, but this lives way more rentfree in my head.
- Say what you want about the man, Friedrich II. of the HRE and Sicily is still the ballsiest motherfucker ever to go on Crusade excommunicated and actually enter the Holy City by negotiating with the local muslim rulers.
- The Cadaver Synode is pretty up there, where the current pope dug up a former pope to put him on trial. The early papacy was wild.
- I wish I recalled the names of things and people involved, but the work between Protestant Priest from Hessen-Cassel and Catholic Priests to work out a reunification of the churches still is fascinating to me. I really, really wish I could recall anything, but I am not even sure rn if the Prince (Landgraf) at the time was Friedrich II. Whoever it was, he was the only post-reformation Landgraf to convert to Catholicism. I just think it is a neat piece of history, especially because the people involved in trying to mend the schism were told to stop by the Papacy at some point, but they really wanted to keep doing this. It's such a nice example of understanding, in a certain way.
- I do not care if the anecdote is true, nothing will ever be funner than the Drepanum story in the Punic Wars. "If they aren't hungry, then maybe they are thirsty." Claudius just YEETED the SACRED chickens over board. What's not to love.

#OTD in 2014 – Death of loyalist politician and Protestant religious leader, Ian Paisley.
The career of the Rev Ian Paisley, who has died aged 88, arced from origins as fiery preacher and street agitator, through decades when his harassment helped undermine mainstream unionist leaders who attempted compromise with nationalists. But aged 81 he won praise inside and outside Ireland and made global headlines for sharing the top post in a peacetime Stormont with former IRA leader Martin…

Carlson Gaffer: H. Mark Vuille Script Supervisor: Susan Malerstein Production Sound Mixer: Mark Ulano Rigging Gaffer: Todd Sater Production Supervisor: Alison Harstedt Stunts: Katie Rowe Movie Reviews: GenerationofSwine: It’s time for the Majestic review…. …RED SCARE!!!! It makes a play at it in the very start of the film. It loudly proclaims that, HEY, WATCH THIS MOVIE, IT’S ABOUT FREE SPEECH AND THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST!!!!! And it does it as loud as it can… …and then it kind of forgets what the movie is about up until the last 15 minutes. However, the bulk of the movie does seem like the kind of film that would fit in the Hollywood Blacklist Era. The plot, the acting, the setting, all seems to be very much a 1950s feel good movie… …and then it veers off again and delivers on the 1st Amendment moral to end the film with a light heavy hand…if that makes sense. So, it feels disjointed, but in a way that oddly fits the premise to begin with. Almost as if it is trying to be a movie in a movie, which might have been the point. Watch it once, it will entertain you. Watch it more than once and you’ll be bored.

Which Taoiseach negotiated the Good Friday Agreement on behalf of the Republic of Ireland?
Bertie Ahern (born 1951) is a former Irish politician who served as Taoiseach, or Prime Minister, of the Republic of Ireland from 1997 to 2008. During his time in office, Ahern played a key role in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement, which was a landmark peace agreement that helped to bring an end to decades of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.
Ahern's involvement in the peace process began in the late 1990s when he was appointed Taoiseach. He quickly made it a priority to work towards a resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, which had been ongoing for over 30 years. Ahern believed that a lasting peace could only be achieved through dialogue and compromise, and he worked closely with UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and other key players to negotiate a peace settlement.
The Good Friday Agreement, which was signed in 1998, was the result of years of negotiations between the various parties involved in the conflict. The agreement established a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland, created new institutions to promote cross-border cooperation between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and provided for the decommissioning of weapons held by paramilitary groups.
Ahern's role in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement was widely praised, both in Ireland and abroad. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, along with Blair and Northern Irish politician David Trimble.
