Steamboat Willie Reimagined (and some Dos and Don'ts if you plan to create your own)
We've enjoyed seeing new takes on "Steamboat Willie", but be aware of some Dos and Don'ts if you want to join in the fun...
The past week has seen a big fuss in the cartoon community over the expiration of the copyright of early versions of Mickey Mouse, meaning that after 96 years, his first three shorts, including Steamboat Willie, originally animated for the most part by Ub Iwerks, are now public domain and free for anyone to use (although the added soundtracks to the first two are still under copyright in the…

Like I said earlier, Kitching is bringing us StC’s first Tails solo story this time, which begins with the setup of Sonic ditching Tails once again. This dynamic has been a staple of StC so far and will go on long into the run, already seeing readers cast their sympathy towards Tails
Tumblr media
However, while Sonic might not need Tails, it looks like someone else does…
…Surprise, it’s two mysterious foxes from a mysterious place called the Nameless Zone! Well, this is mysterious to us, but it looks like Tails knows all about it. Because yes, while the Archie Comics threw all of their extended lore at Knuckles, over in StC, it went to Tails. Actually, that’s not really a fair comparison. The Tails stories set in the Nameless Zone weren’t nearly as numerous as the Archie Knuckles stories. By the time I started reading the comic as a kid, these stories would only occasionally make an appearance and I confess they were the one part of StC where I felt like I was missing the rest of the story. So, I’m looking forward to reading them from the start and having the full context
Who are these guys known as the Enchanter Kings? Beats me, but I like the grey one’s earrings!
Tumblr media
The Enchanter Kings proceed to deadname Tails, before admitting they’ve read letters that he’s sent to his parents. What kind of kingdom is this?? Said letters have put Tails in a lot of trouble, because it turns out that he’s been bigging up his adventures to put himself as the hero and Sonic as his assistant. Believing his words, the kingdom has turned to Tails to seek his help Also, I know it’s pure coincidence and everyone’s been drawn with light blue eyes here, but I do like that artist Dave Windett has accidentally given Tails the eye colour he’ll go on to have in the modern era many years later
Tumblr media
I hope you all think this armour looks cool on Tails, because if I remember rightly, he wears it for most, if not all, of his Nameless Zone stories from here on out
Tumblr media
The first part of this tale ends with a preview of the dangers that Tails is going to face, as a creature called Trogg demands for the champion (Tails) to be brought to him so they can battle. We’ll see next time how Tails handles that Now, I haven’t been talking about this on the blog, but most of the non-Sonic stories in these early StC issues have been multi-parters, with only really the Sonic stories being (mostly) stand-alone comic strips to pull in new readers. So, I wasn’t surprised to see that this Tails story is also broken up into more than one part. Even so, it’s reassuring to see that they had enough confidence in Tails to give him a story that spans over multiple issues Your mileage may vary on the high fantasy setting of the Nameless Zone and I admit that even I’m holding off judgement until I’ve read a few more of them, but I do think that they were giving these kinds of stories to Tails at all was impressive. One reason I praise StC is because Tails and Amy were both frequently being given their own solo stories as regular features of the comics. While both characters are prominent in the IDW Comics today and Archie gave them their own Sonic Universe arcs, across Sonic media as a whole, we still don’t see a lot of either of them being given the chance to have the spotlight on their own, instead of as part of a collective cast. We don't get to see much of Tails or Amy having solo adventures with them as the stars. StC just did it. There was no “will it sell?. StC gave spotlight to Tails and Amy, something that many fans would still be asking to see 20 years later Also, I can already vouch that in future we’ll be getting a lot of Tails stories that aren’t tied to his Nameless Zone past, so if you really don’t think this kind of story is your bag, then keep holding on for future issues - we’ll get there

Smug Bug Reads: Fleetway’s Sonic the Comic’s Tails; The Nameless Zone Part 1
After a long teased possibility of Tails getting his own shorts, it’s finally here. In it, we see some of Tails’ own thoughts on being left behind by Sonic, as well as some exploration of The Nameless Zone, a zone that he (and perhaps others?) look at with caution and even fear...
Script: Nigel Kitching          Art: Dave Windett          Lettering: Elitta Fell
It’s no secret by now that this continuity’s Sonic isn’t exactly friendly. While yes he is no doubt a hero, he seems easily annoyed and very blunt about what he thinks. Unfortunately, Tails is treated no better. This miniseries starts off with that; Tails tries his best to keep up with Sonic, but the hedgehog - in summary - tells him to beat it, and that he’ll see him some other time. Tails, now dejected, walks off. He’s confident he can be helpful, even if the he has made a few blunders in the past...          I really gotta ask why Tails adores Sonic this much, especially with his sour attitude. Heck, the critters too don’t seem to mind it either. I guess they don’t pay it too much attention since he keeps saving their hides on the regular. Continuously doing that alone and not asking for anything in return shows that he really does care about them, but the guy could stand to learn to improve his conduct. Poor Tails is all down because of that.
Before said fox can mope further though, a voice calls out to him from beyond...
Tumblr media
The Nameless Zone, huh? Is this their version of some sort of boogeyman or something? But it’s not a boogeyman, it’s a place, and instead of it being fake, it’s actually real? Maybe it’s some sort of legend, myth, or story passed around. Anyways, really got to wonder what makes this place so bad to be considered Tails’ number one fear after facing threats from Robontik and his creations more than a couple times by now. Despite being his greatest terror, he approaches and enters the portal.
Tumblr media
... He makes it sound like some sort of daily chore. Not quite as fearful as I thought he’d be assuming the Nameless Zone is his biggest source of dread, but I guess this was done to save space, time, and pages within the comic.          Moving on! Upon entering the portal, he comes across two curious characters:
Tumblr media
Who? Who are these dudes? Both foxes(?), maybe? How much does Tails know about them, and what are they capable of? Clearly quite a bit since they were able to open up a portal to another zone.
Perhaps those questions will be answered another time, but right now they answer why they brought Tails over...
Tumblr media
There seems to have been quite the misunderstanding.          If it wasn’t obvious, the Enchanter King was referring to Sonic, who in Tails’ letters seems to not be as heroic compared to his real counterpart. Rather, he’s described as an “assistant” instead. Tripping over his words, Tails tries to explain that Sonic is actually the real hero, but the Enchanter Kings think he’s just being humble. They are really sold onto the idea that Tails is a real big shot, so much so that they made an enchanted battle armor just for him. What’s this armor for, you may ask?
Tumblr media
😬
TL:DR; Tails is ✨the chosen✨ because of a fake reputation uh oh-

From the LCD press release:
It’s a Roy of the Rovers Special: LANCASTER COMICS DAY Returns on Sunday 11th June
The third Lancaster Comics Day, organised by The Friends of Lancaster Library, will take place on Sunday 11th June 2016 in Lancaster’s Main Library.
This year, the organisers have gone football crazy, not only bringing local publisher Michael Barrett, author of PRESTON NORTH END: RISE OF THE INVINCIBLES graphic novel to the event, but artist David Sque, best known for his work on the iconic ROY OF THE ROVERS too – all the way from Spain!
ROY OF THE ROVERS is of course one of Britain’s best-loved comic characters, first published in the weekly comic TIGER in 1954 but who eventually got his very own comic in the 1970s, edited by Barrie Tomlinson – who will also be at Lancaster Comics Day.
Barrie is eager to reveal some stories about British comics publishing for the very first time direct to fans who grew up reading the comics he edited such as Tiger and Eagle, and how he persuaded Morecambe and Wise to write for comics, and Prince Phillip, too!
Guest: Richard Piers Rayner
Joining them will be DOCTOR WHO and ROAD TO PERIDITION artist Richard Piers Rayner, a longtime artist in residence at Middlesbrough Football Club; publisher and comic artist Tim Perkins; top artist Nick Brokenshire, who’s currently blowing comic fans away with ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN for Dark Horse Comics; local fantasy author A.S. Chambers, whose characters live and work in an alternate Lancaster; top indie comics creator Tom Ward, a master of crowdfunded comic publishing; BEANO and ACES WEEKLY artist Marc Jackson; and Lancaster Guardian cartoonist Jack Knight.
Guest: Tim Perkins
The event is supported by Lancaster’s very own comic shop First Age Comics and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, who will be taking over a whole room to bring comic fans the latest news on their major comics event spanning 13th – 15th October. (Weekend passes already on sale).
With Comic Cake and plenty of comic creators on hand selling their independently created comics, as well as lots of comics to buy (and more), there will be plenty to do and comics to discover.
“We’ve had great fun over the last two years with Lancaster Comics Day and support for the event has been amazing, from local comic creators, fans, library staff, Lancaster’s own comic shop, First Age Comics, and backing from Kendal’s Lakes International Comic Art Festival”, says co-organiser and comics writer / editor John Freeman.
“Lancaster Comics Day also helped raise money for a sound systems for the Library last year and black out blinds in the first,” notes John, whose many credits include DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE and who runs the British comics web site downthetubes.net. “This year, we hope to support the Library still further, and make a donation to St. John’s Hospice.
“The British comics creator community has been hit hard this year by cancer-related deaths, with the passing of 2000AD artist Edmund Bagwell announced just this week,” he continues. “Stuart Reynolds, of the Friends of Lancaster Library and I were only too happy to agree to support our local Hospice in appreciation of the work such services do nationwide for cancer victims and their families.”
“I’m looking forward to second helpings of Lancaster Comics Day and I hope local comic fans are, too!”

In Review: The Wallop! Annual, from Volcano Comics
Review by Peter Duncan Having just read and reviewed the new Beano and The Dandy annuals, it was interesting to see independent publisher Volcano Comics entry into the humour comic field.
