Paul being Tim's uncle means everything in the world for Emma's relationship with her family can we talk about that
offscreen, at least in the timeline of Jane's A Car, Emma's successfully become an integrated enough part of her family for them to consider her boyfriend family too. Paul's an influence that Tim refers back to. Emma has established an active role in Tim's life by implication and I am once again BEGGING the langs to let us SEE IT-

I’ve been thinking about Tom Houston a lot recently. Just imagining the night of the accident, it’s literally Christmas time, everything is going so well, until flash…bang. And he’s disoriented, but his first instinct is to check if Tim is okay, but when he looks to his right, there’s Jane, dead body just sitting there. And Tom can’t even process anything, it all feels so unreal. The cops come to aid and ask questions, but Tom is just trying to wake Jane up and she won’t budge. Then she’s rolled off away by the cops and Tim is probably shaking and crying.
And after that it’s all hell. He quits shop class, he quits being the Nighthawks coach. Emma comes to Hatchetfield at the announcement of her sisters death and funeral, and Tom probably can’t even face her at first, knowing that she might be boiling with rage. He then can barley eat or sleep, and when he does he’s having constant nightmares, or swearing he sees Jane at night. Not to mention he can’t even look at a car for some time without shaking and triggering his PTSD. Their house is stone cold quiet for weeks and it drives Tom to utter insanity. There’s so much unspoken yet visible pain that he gets a therapist for Tim, and maybe for some time, Tom goes to get therapy himself, but it doesn’t help. Thinking about the amount of times he and his son have sat in painful silence, how he desperately wants to help him but feel he can’t reach him. Like they’re sitting at the now quiet dinner table, and Tom wants to say something….fucking anything to comfort his son, but he can’t. He sees the sadness and loneliness in Tim’s eyes and it breaks him, he can’t take it. The guilt gets to him, he ruined his sons life, he ruined Emma’s life, he ruined Jane, he killed her, he killed his family, and he’s nothing without Jane. For awhile he wonders if Tim hates him now, and that self loathing part of him wishes he did.
Tom then just gets more miserable and depressed by the day. He starts putting walls up and begins to grow angry and bitter, pushing people like Emma away cause he feels he doesn’t deserve anyone, not even Tim. And I feel like Tim is also trying to reach him, trying to tell his dad that he needs emotional support and WANTS it from him, but Tom is so caught up in self loathing that he can’t notice, he’s so scared and worried, worried that he isn’t what Tim needs because he isn’t doing anything right and making things worse, yet he doesn’t know that he’s exactly what Tim needs. And it takes SO long for Tom to get back on his feet again and actually feel alive, feel like he WANTS to live instead of wishing he was the one who died instead of Jane. I just know it was an incredibly painful amount of months for everyone after her death.

I was thinking how everyone always does, "Paul is Richie's Uncle" why doesn't anybody ever do "Emma is Ruth's aunt" but then milliseconds later I remember that, unlike Paul, Emma actually has an established family and that would imply that either she had another sibling or Tom and Jane had another child (ie Ruth) so now I want to present 3 AUs, (if anyone's already done these I just haven't seen it sorry):
1) Ruth is Tim's older sister (i dont think this would work timeline wise for Tom/Jane's age but idgaf, maybe it was a teen pregnancy, which could add a layer or drama for Jane's while 'perfect sister' thing)
2) Emma and Jane had another sibling who was never mentioned because...insert drama here (if we want a preexisting character, I like the idea of Linda*. Maybe shes their half sibling that they dont talk to because of how elitist Linda and her father are (so like maybe her father had an affair with Emma/Jane's mom but wanted it to be a secret for reputation purposes) but then this would also mean Ruth is Linda's daughter and all of the implications of that can be explored)
3) Ruth can be like Emma's cousin or something, idk
(*either I saw a fic with this or fever dreamed it i dont remember, but I like the au of it actually being Paul and Linda being estranged half siblings. We essentially know nothing about Paul's family so maybe he never mentions them because he's not on speaking terms with them because his dad (in this case Linda's dad) considers him a bastard child or something. But what I really like about his au is the idea of Linda and Paul being half siblings and how they would interact with each other. Maybe Linda shuns him like her father or maybe they actually get along and she has a soft spot for him idk. This could also apply with Linda being Emma/Jane's sister) (idk how this post became about Linda Monroe but ok)

Because it is Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah you’re getting holiday headcannons!
Chastities - very stereotypical Christian Christmas. Angel on the tree, about 12 nativity scenes, open presents then go to Church all that.
Spankoffski - when Pete was younger he would always wake Ted up at 5am. Now that Pete is older and doesn’t want to wake up at 5am Ted returns the favor
Lipschitz - they’re Jewish. Ruth and Richie would argue if 12 or 8 days is a better holiday
Houston - Tom and Jane had a rule that Tim wasn’t allowed out of his room until 9am.
Fosters - Lex didn’t like Christmas until she met Ethan. It was always stressful trying to make it perfect for Hannah. Ethan’s first Christmas with them he got a shit ton of stuff for Hannah and Lex.
Houston P2 - Becky’s third x-mas with them Tim got her a “Best Step-Mom ever” mug. Tom and Becky cried
Forsters celebrate Yule.
More maybe added. Share yours if you want (I’ll add with credit)

I have so many conflicting feelings about Jane Perkins-Houston. She is a great mother. She is a manipulative bitch. She loves her sister. She thinks greenpeace girl is hot. Her best friend is Linda Monroe. She is a psychiatrist. She treats her husband like a patient instead of a lover. She took care of a literature professor that told her about the black book. Her family are probably hatchetmen. She likes bars. She is the perfect older sister. She is a car.

Paul is Richie's uncle headcannons are really cute, but consider alternatively:
Paul has no family living in Hatchetfield. He never had any siblings, and his parents retired in Florida or something, so he only sees them a couple times a year. He's always had a small family, and just kind of figured he always would.
Then he starts dating Emma, and things are going well, so she introduces her to Tom and Tim. He knows just how important re-connecting with her family is to Emma, so he tries really hard to make a good impression whenever they visit. Tom and Paul don't have much in common, and don't really hit it off at first, but Tim thinks he's great. This a surprise to Paul, since he doesn't really think he's good at talking to kids (and tbh he's kinda not), but despite that Tim really likes him. Maybe they bond over liking the same kinds of movies, maybe Tim just likes that he seems like a good listener, but the dynamic just clicks. Whenever Emma is coming over, Tim asks "is uncle Paul coming too?". Tim shows Paul a bunch of his favorite video games, and Paul is actually really good at helping Tim with his homework. Emma is stoked that Tim and Paul get along well and that she's becoming a closer part of the family, and Paul actually finds the whole "uncle" thing really fulfilling. This ends up being the catalyst to Emma and Paul having a more serious discussion about whether or not they want kids; maybe they do, maybe they don't, either makes sense to me, but either way Paul is really excited about becoming a closer part of the family
