Beats & Pieces Big Band - Good Days
Think of big bands and you’re most likely to think of the halcyon days of mid-twentieth-century jazz and the likes of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. This would infer that big band music is an obsolete format, a relic from decades of yore. Founded in 2008 and directed by conductor, composer, arranger, and producer Ben Cottrell, Beats & Pieces give the lie to that notion. With Good Days, their long-awaited third studio album, they show once again that big band music is a living, expressive thing, more than capable of continuing development in our own times. Put simply, there are things a big band say and do that cannot otherwise be said and done, and Beats & Pieces say and do plenty here, with exhilarating immaculacy and imagination. This ensemble swings, twenty-first century style. Good Days ranges emotionally from the funereal to the exuberant, the ecclesiastical to the profane, the pacific to the chaotic. Fleetingly, you think of Charles Mingus, Keith Tippett, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra... But there’s also a post-rock undertow to many of these tracks which shows a consciousness of such contemporaries as Björk, Radiohead, or Everything Everything. Ben Cottrell : director Anthony Brown, Emily Burkhardt, Oliver Dover : saxophones Simon Lodge, Rich Mcveigh, Phil O’Malley : trombone Owen Bryce, Graham South, Nick Walters : trumpet Anton Hunter : guitar Richard Jones : piano/Rhodes Stewart Wilson : bass Finlay Panter : drums forest field-recording from Dählhölzliwald, Bern, 4 April 2020 train station field recording from Berlin Hauptbahnhof, 16 March 2016 bells field recording from Münsterplatz, Bern 26 July 2020 all field recordings by Ben Cottrell

By KEVIN KRAUSE
Staff Writer [email protected]
He was a fugitive who had threatened to go to war with the government and had illegally gotten his hands on a powerful firearm after being released from prison.
And he was in contact with another militia extremist who months later would begin plotting to kidnap Michigan’s governor, according to the FBI.
“I am now a sought after man, who is going to stand up and NEVER allow them to kidnap me again,” Kevin “KC” Massey said on Facebook.
Massey’s final days were spent running, hiding and talking about a final confrontation. That, however, never happened. The North Texas man who once led vigilante patrols on the Texas-Mexico border shot himself two days before Christmas in 2019 in Van Zandt County, putting an end to the manhunt.
Over a year after Massey’s death, some associates who allegedly provided him with aid and support are now themselves facing prison time. While on the run, Massey, 53, became a powerful symbol of resistance for the resurgent anti-government militia movement that has been radicalizing people disaffected by the pandemic and national politics.
Cody Gene Reynolds, 34, of Hunt County recently pleaded guilty in Dallas to buying Massey an AR-15-style firearm a few months before Massey’s suicide. Reynolds is scheduled to be sentenced in August, according to court records. His attorney declined to comment.
And Barry Gordon Croft, 44, was communicating with Massey on Facebook in the fall of 2019, promising to help him and to train him for a coming war against the government, the FBI says. Croft, of Delaware, has been charged along with about a dozen others with plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
A third man, James Russell Smith, was arrested and tried on a charge of harboring Massey at his Hunt County home. But a federal jury in Dallas found Smith, 70, not guilty several months ago.
Massey was already a hero to some other homegrown extremists, and his death only served to make him a martyr in the eyes of like-minded militia members. An Illinois podcaster last year called Massey a “fallen political prisoner.” And a Facebook page created for him called Massey a “patriot who served on the Texas border repelling foreign invaders.”
For federal authorities who are looking to contain the growth of domestic terrorism in the U.S, that is a concern.
“Massey’s status as a fugitive became a symbol of government oppression for individuals like Croft who harbored anti-government and anti-federal law enforcement views,” an FBI complaint in that case said.
Croft was arrested in October. Prosecutors called him a ringleader in the Whitmer kidnapping scheme as well as the “prime mover behind” the construction and testing of “weapons of mass destruction.”
Croft took part in nighttime surveillance of the governor’s house, planned to bomb a bridge and detonated test bombs he planned to use, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler said in a filing. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney declined to comment.
‘They will ... pay’
Croft messaged Massey on Facebook in October 2019 when Massey was a fugitive, the FBI says. Among the things Croft said to Massey were, “They will have to pay for what they have done,” and “I don’t care if we destroy this whole planet in the fight that is coming, but a reckoning is necessary,” an FBI affidavit said.
Croft also allegedly said that “the People” didn’t support what happened to Massey and that “Our hour draws near, brother.”
“I’m going to North Carolina on Saturday to discuss going to war against the government of North Carolina,” Croft allegedly wrote. “They invited me to speak and share tactics. Please come out bro. We need you.”
Croft also told Massey in his messages that he could help him, according to the FBI.
“I can pull you out,” Croft allegedly told him. “Let me get you nourished back to combat ready … I need to recover you, sir.”
Massey, 53, was an electrician from Quinlan, an hour east of Dallas, and a man with “alarming rage” and a love of heavy weaponry, federal authorities have said.
He had gone into hiding around May 2019, several months after being released from prison on probation for a federal weapons charge that stemmed from his armed border patrols, court records say.
In addition to being a militia member, Massey was a Three Percenter, which refers to a far-right, anti-government movement that the FBI is building a conspiracy case against in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and insurrection, according to published reports and court records.
Three Percenters are also referred to as “III%ers” or “threepers.” The term Three Percenter is based on the myth that only 3% of American colonists fought against the British during the American Revolution. Authorities say it’s not a single group but more of a common belief that a small yet determined force of armed citizens can overthrow a government. Many independent militias incorporate it into their names.
Authorities say Croft posted the following comment online in April 2019: “Be it known, any harm to KCI Massey III by the federal government will trigger my 3% [expletive] to action!!!%”
Help from friends
Massey came to the attention of federal authorities in 2014 when he was in Brownsville as a member of a border vigilante group called Rusty’s Rangers. Dressed in military fatigues, he conducted armed patrols with others on the South Texas border to search for immigrants attempting to cross into the U.S., authorities say.
The militia members, displeased with U.S. border enforcement, said they took matters into their own hands after obtaining permission to access private property. Their makeshift “Camp Lonestar” on rural land served as a “staging area for their patrols,” according to the feds.
Massey routinely videotaped his border activities and posted them on Facebook, court records said. He would later say on Facebook that he had the power of citizen’s arrest. In posts, Massey described detaining immigrants at gunpoint and binding their wrists with zip ties.
He vowed to remain at the border until regulators “sealed the border or there’s some sort of civil war,” prosecutors said.
Instead he was arrested and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Massey was found with 20 homemade explosive devices and other weapons at the time, court records say. He was convicted and sentenced in 2016 to 41 months in federal prison.
His prison writings, archived online by a supporter, as well as his Facebook posts, show that he fervently embraced right-wing extremist movements.
According to prosecutors, he also expressed support for Timothy McVeigh, whose bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building in 1995 killed more than 160 people and injured over 680 others.
Massey was released from prison in June 2018 to begin serving his three-year probation term, according to court records. As a felon, he could not legally have firearms.
But Massey drove with Reynolds to a Caddo Mills gun store in December 2018 to buy one, according to court records. Massey gave Reynolds money and told him which gun to buy. Reynolds then purchased the Diamondback Arms DB15 for Massey. The gun, although called a pistol, looks and performs like an assault rifle.
Reynolds pleaded guilty on March 30 to acquiring a firearm from a licensed dealer by false or fictitious statement and to aiding and abetting a felon in possession of a firearm, court records show. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
A warrant was issued for Massey’s arrest in May 2019 after he tested positive for illegal drugs and failed to report to his probation officer, court records show.
While on the run, Massey went to a second man for help, an old friend, prosecutors said.
An acquittal
James Russell Smith is retired from the construction industry and lives in Lone Oak, east of Dallas. He had known Massey for about 20 years and recruited him to join the Cossacks Motorcycle Club years earlier, prosecutors said. Massey told Smith he was broke, hungry and needed a place to stay, according to court records.
In July 2019, Massey moved to Smith’s property near the banks of Lake Tawakoni, court records say. Smith provided him with food and shelter and also allowed Massey to store his property, including firearms, on his land, according to prosecutors.
U.S. marshals learned Massey was there and set up surveillance. Massey was seen coming and going from the home with what appeared to be a firearm on his hip, a federal complaint said.
Agents raided the home with a search warrant but Massey was gone, having “escaped into the woods,” prosecutors said.
Smith told agents he didn’t know where Massey was. The marshals said they found an AK-47-style pistol inside a bag he left behind. While the marshals continued to look for Massey, the government in July 2019 charged Smith with conspiracy to conceal a person from arrest.
Smith’s trial ended in September with an acquittal. Juror notes submitted during deliberations indicate they had an issue with a critical element of the charge — that Smith knew of the existence of a federal arrest warrant for Massey at the time.
‘Key issue’
Smith’s attorney, Keith Willeford, said in an interview that the arrest warrant for Massey had been sealed and therefore wasn’t public knowledge.
“The key issue was the fact that they had to prove that my client knew that KC had a warrant,” he said.
Willeford said Massey stayed at his client’s property for only about four nights. And no one ever called Smith to inform him that Massey was wanted or to ask for his help in locating him, Willeford said.
William Hagen, a federal prosecutor, tried unsuccessfully in 2015 to seek a tougher prison term for Massey, citing his “utter disregard for federal law.”
And he issued a warning that turned out to be prophetic.
“Because the defendant not only disrespects the law, but explicitly rejects the legitimacy of it, he will undoubtedly rearm and reoffend once released from prison,” Hagen wrote.
The 911 call came in on Dec. 23, 2019. Police said Massey’s body was found in a “small wooded area.”

Buckle the fuck up, y’all, because I’m about to rant.  Sorry in advance for anyone I piss off, and doubly sorry if this goes off on about a billion tangents.  I’m going to try and rein it in, but.
9/11 did not ruin country music, you ignorant fucks.
Changing musical tastes because of the emergence of new artists and new cultural trends is what changed country music.
Speaking of Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) by Toby Keith...
OP was NINE YEARS OLD in 2001.  When I was nine years old, I still thought like, the Monkees and New Kids On The Block was the height of musical talent. Me, I was 24 when 9/11 happened.  (My birthday?  first half of October.  I’m a fall baby, so I wasn’t even yet 25.)
Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue was the song we needed.  Has it aged well?  No, of course not.  And honestly?  It was never meant to be released.  And in case you don’t feel like googling or reading the link, let me paste the relevant section:
But the song he is best known for is called "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," and he told 60 Minutes II that he wrote it in just 20 minutes, a week after 9/11.  He wrote it to play for troops on USO tours – something he often volunteers to do. He never intended to release the song on a CD, but then, he played it for Pentagon brass in Washington.
"He [the Marine Corp commandant] said, 'You have to release it. You can serve your country in other ways besides suiting up in combat.' We will go kick their butts. But we survive on morale," says Keith. "I mean, we live on the morale. That's what we travel on. And, he said I highly recommend you put that song out."
He knew it was the song we needed, to support and revitalize the troops that were the front-liners of a conflict that (in hindsight) was absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary.  But he never meant for it to be widely released, until the military brass talked him into it, and he did it.  Did he profit from it?  Abso-fucking-lutely he did.
But so has Alan Jackson (Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning, 2002, Grammy winner for Best Country Song), Trace Adkins (Arlington, 2005), Big & Rich (8th of November, 2006, a reflection on Niles Harris, a Vietnam veteran)
But Courtesy of the Red White and Blue was the song that we needed at that time.  We were a nation of mourning, the country who had for so long carried the big stick and been seen as well-nigh untouchable (outside of homegrown nutters like Unabomber and McVeigh, etc) brought down to the level of the rest of the world.
We watched live on television as thousands upon thousands were killed and injured; we watched in horror as airplane passengers gave up their lives to prevent even more.  We held the hands and hugged the shoulders of those who had lost loved ones and friends, and we were lost children because we’re ‘Murica, we’re the bully that got punched in the face and didn’t know what to do.  As an adult, I guess I’m more aware of that because I remember it so clearly.  I remember watching it on television gaping, because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  What was first thought an “accidental” collision quickly became so much more, and it shattered an entire nation.
Courtesy picked us back up, and reminded us that we’re a nation of strength, that we would find the people who hurt us and would hurt them back.  That there were men and women in uniform who were willing to fight for us.  Who had been fighting for years, proven by rows of white crosses in a DC cemetery.  (And let me tell you, if you haven’t been, there are no real words to describe Arlington.  Except possibly “hallowed ground.”)
But even more than that?  Another set of changes was coming in to country music, not all of them great.
First came the “pop” wave, which I would guess was started by Taylor Swift in 2006, maybe Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and a few others in that genre.  That left the twangers like David Allan Coe and Johnny Cash and George Jones and even George Strait and Alan Jackson in the dust.  They were now “old school” artists, but who are still beloved and well-loved because their style will never really fade away.   (Want some great examples?  Highwaymen, Seven Spanish Angels, You Never Even Call Me By My Name, and a lot of Charlie Daniels’ Band, pre-2k Hank Williams Jr., etc.)
But then you have a new influx of rock-influenced artists after that, some of which I’m really fond of.  Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy (the MuzikMafia), Tim McGraw got into this a bit, Darius Rucker did a bit, Hank Jr. helped lend his presence to the MuzikMafia and “legitimize” it, as did Kid Rock.
But they also ruined it, because they’ve all become unabashedly political.  Trace Adkins and John Rich were on The Celebrity Apprentice (and I don’t hold it against them, everybody is entitled, even though they’re wrong.), Trace Adkins throws himself behind Wounded Warrior Project, which has been questioned in the past about it’s spending but recently redeemed itself according to CharityWatch.  Both Hank Jr. and Kid Rock place in the crowd with Ted Nugent on the “You’re so right-wing I wish you’d shut the fuck up” scale.
There was a shift like this in rock and metal, too.  Between 1989 and, say, 1995, a new musical movement showed up and rocked the foundations of metal and rock.  It was the Seattle grunge movement, and it was spearheaded by groups like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Alice in Chains, etc.  And music changed to flow into the new styles and channels created by this new popular addition.
So please, for the love of God, STOP.  The villification of one genre of music by one single person is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Tumblr media
BIG DISCLAIMER: i was 9 when 9/11 happened, so this might be more about my own crystalizing tastes than anything else. i think it’s a pretty darn good theory tho and other people have validated it.
BIGGER DISCLAIMER: i am not saying that country music prior to 9/11 was free from nationalist, racist, misogynist undertones - i just think that these themes became more the norm!
MY HOT TAKE:
with very few exceptions, including goodbye earl, before he cheats, and daddy Iessons (side note - all women!) 9/11 ruined country music. around 2014 onward we’ve got margo price, sturgill simpson, jason isbell etc., who are making country music great again (wink), but those folks are mostly considered “alternative” country. the mainstream country music for well over a decade now is a glut of trash performative patriotic / working-class-but-not-really lab-crafted budweiser-sponsored nonsense that has managed to sound rebellious (or has convinced its fans that it sounds rebellious) without ever actually questioning any power structure. so much so that artists who ACTUALLY criticized the government were literally blacklisted for nearly a decade (the dixie chicks)
pre-9/11 country music, though not perfect or ideologically pure by any stretch, did not have the raging american flag painted truck boner that comes to mind for a lot of people who say “i like everything except rap and country”
SPECIFICALLY, toby keith’s “courtesy of the red, white, and blue (the angry american)” (2002) literally destroyed country music. it was a direct answer to the 9/11 attacks and war song in support of the invasion of afghanistan. the lyrics read like a disjointed feverish email chain letter forwarded from your great uncle sprinkled with glittering american flag gifs and heavily saturated pictures of bald eagles. the entire song is lifted from an estimated 248 peeling bumper stickers collected from rusted trucks on cinder blocks in overgrown yards, cut up and arranged to fit a catchy, formulaic tune that is almost certainly the background music playing in george w. bush’s head at all times.
“we’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the american way and uncle sam put your name at the top of his list and the statue of liberty started shakin’ her fist and the eagle will fly, and it’s gonna be hell, when you hear mother freedom start a'ringin’ her bell”
country music and the new country musicians that toby keith paved the way for became so pro establishment and so unquestioningly nationalistic that, again, the dixie chicks who went against this grain were blacklisted by the industry and received death threats from country music fans. hell, there are folks who STILL froth at the mouth at the mere mention of the dixie chicks.
9/11 killed outlaw country - how can you sing the praises of law breakers when your main circuit consists of singing to troops? there are some great classic country songs critiquing the police state - especially from johnny cash and merle haggard - now country music artists hold fundraisers for FOPs. new country music is basically in-law country music.
you don’t have to write a pro-bush patriotic anthem to be part of this post-9/11 ruination. playing meaningless songs about living in the heart of (read: white) america, eschewing the city (read: not white), and cracking open a cold one with the boys for “authentic” country music is also important to the war effort.
there’s a progression of themes here:
post 9/11 top tier: war anthem, vocally patriotic, directly used as pro war propaganda; which paved the way for: “things used to be so much better” thinly veiled racist laments, good for campaign ads; which paved the way for meaningless party anthems - attempts to make things “like they used to be” and craft a reality that neither the artist nor listener likely ever experience.
that brings us to what most people think of today when they say they hate country music: the country party anthem - “tiny hot gal in tight jean shorts who can drink beer like the guys, she doesn’t like beyoncé Like Other Girls, oh she’s so into me and my truck, i’m gonna take her fishing after i finish sowing my corn - sung by a guy who’s never touched a tractor” - has overtaken the tragic, done me wrong, despairing country ballads of tammy wynette, george jones, and even up into pre-9/11 contemporaries like reba mcentire and george strait. you didn’t necessarily have to be country to relate to their pain. now you have to perform suburban redneckness to enjoy luke bryan.
when was the last time you heard a sad country song?
after 9/11, cowboys (whether or not they had ever been near a cow) weren’t allowed to be sad anymore (no more done me wrong country), and they certainly weren’t allowed to question authority (no more outlaw country). partying hardy became the most important American Thing and if you don’t sing about that, our Enemies Will Win.
so - understanding that country music has always had bad stuff, and that like any genre it suffers from commercialization, 9/11 DESTROYED COUNTRY MUSIC. and toby keith gleefully helped destroy it.
for some further evidence of the decline of country music, please listen to the dixie chicks’ “long time gone” which is an indictment of the industry (i believe it was written before 9/11 but my point still stands - the genre was on the decline and 9/11 was the major cultural event that hastened the decline).
maybe i am a curmudgeon - almost every generation of country music has had its own “country music is not what it used to be” anthem, but i really think something distinct happened with 9/11.

Not only did it pass, it did so without any of the amendments looking to wind back anti-discrimination. .
All Labor MPs and Senators supported the Yes vote as a matter of party policy, while members of the governing Liberal/National Coalition exercised a conscience vote.
Since only 4 MPs (specifically fewer than 5) voted no, the full record of Ayes and Abstentions was not recorded for posterity in the Hansard (the official record of Australia’s various levels of government), with only the 4 No votes being recorded. We only know the Abstainers did so as they were absent from the chamber when the doors were locked for the vote. While 2 of them have subsequently stated they stood aside so as not to thwart the will of their electorate despite their personal convictions, fleeing the chamber ensured that even had the threshold been crossed there would be no record of their choice to not support marriage equality
While it must be noted that Coalition members were among some of the most strident Yes supporters, we have a situation where either a very large number of the Liberal Party and Nationals party have decided to obscure their personal position with a Yes vote (meaning only the high profile No campaigners couldn't get away with this tactic) OR the reality is that the No faction within the Coalition was actually a minority but comprised of the conservative power brokers. It's probably the latter, with a few Death Eaters conservative acolytes trying to pass unnoticed by voting yes.
How the Lower House voted:
NO Independent Bob Katter - Kennedy QLD (53% no); marginal seat Liberal Russell Broadbent - McMillan VIC (63% yes), safe seat Nationals Keith Pitt - Hinkler QLD (51% yes), safe seat Nationals David Littleproud - Maranoa QLD (56% no), VERY safe seat
ABSTAINED, INFORMAL (all prominent No campaigners who exited the chamber when the vote was called) Treasurer Scott Morrison - Cook, NSW (55% yes) - v safe seat Former prime minister Tony Abbott - Warringah, NSW (75% yes) - v safe seat Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce - New England, NSW (53% yes) - safe seat Liberal MP Michael Sukkar - Deakin, Vic (66% yes) - marginal seat Liberal MP Alex Hawke - Mitchell, NSW (51% no) - v safe seat Liberal MP Andrew Hastie - Canning, WA (60% yes) - safe seat Liberal MP Kevin Andrews - Menzies, Vic (57% yes) - v safe seat Liberal MP Rick Wilson - O'Connor, WA (56% yes) - marginal seat National MP George Christensen - Dawson, QLD (55% yes) - safe seat

Native American death sentence carried out as feds complete record-setting fourth execution of 2020
As reported in this AP piece, the "only Native American on federal death row was put to death Wednesday, despite objections from many Navajo leaders who had urged President Donald Trump to halt the execution on the grounds it would violate tribal culture and sovereignty." Here is more:
With the execution of Lezmond Mitchell for the grisly slayings of a 9-year-old and her grandmother, the federal government under the pro-death penalty president has now carried out more executions in 2020 than it had in the previous 56 years combined....
Mitchell, 38, and an accomplice were convicted of killing Tiffany Lee and 63-year-old Alyce Slim after the grandmother offered them a lift as they hitchhiked on the Navajo Nation in 2001.  They stabbed Slim 33 times, slit Tiffany’s throat and stoned her to death. They later mutilated both bodies.
A bid by tribal leaders to persuade Trump to commute Mitchell’s sentence to life in prison failed, as did last-minute appeals by his lawyers for a stay.  The first three federal executions in 17 years went ahead in July after similar legal maneuvers failed. Keith Nelson, who was also convicted of killing a child, is slated to die Friday.
“Nearly 19 years after Lezmond Mitchell brutally ended the lives of two people, destroying the lives of many others, justice finally has been served,” Justice Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec said in a statement....
Death-penalty advocates say the Trump administration’s restart of executions is bringing justice — too long delayed — to victims and families.  There are currently 58 men and one woman on federal death row, many of whose executions have been pending for over 20 years....
Prior to this year, the federal government had carried out just three executions since 1963, all of them between 2001 and 2003, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Death Penalty Information Center. Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was among them.
The first of the resumed executions was of former white supremacist Daniel Lewis Lee on July 14.  Two others, Wesley Purkey and Dustin Honken, were executed later the same week. The victims of all three also included children.  The executions of Christopher Andre Vialva and William Emmett LeCroy are scheduled for late September.

It may be mid-winter and, as the colloquialism goes, its Baltic outside, inside the Limelight 1 the temperature was going very quickly from “keep yourself wrapped up, love” to “jaysus, its wile sweltering”.
With it being winter in Belfast and doors opened from five you would not have been blamed for wondering if people would be thin on the ground for a gig. But with a three band line up of CKY, Backyard Babies and then the Wildhearts headlining, that was never really going to happen. By the time the two-piece band CKY took to the stage at just after 6pm the place was healthily full.

CKY may normally be a four piece tonight they were a two piece, but the sound they made is more than equal to a five piece. This was immediately evident as they slammed straight into “HiFi”, “Sporadic Movement” and “Attached”. These two lads were pounding out an energetic rock that shook your core from top to bottom. Many in the crowd sang along knowing quite a few of the CKY songs.
On went Lead vocalist and guitarist Chad I Ginsburg and drummer Jess Margera producing a very tight thunderous cavern filling performance with “Replaceable”, “Flesh into Gear” and “Frenetic”. Their driving rhythm, groovy riffage and tribalesque drumming had many in the audience moving in time. “Head for a Breakdown”, “Rio”, “Escape from Hellview”, “Bernadette Nere” and “Bite It” finished off the set.
It is without any doubt that CKY performed their hearts out on a stage they filled with their sheer presence. Absolutely fantastic performance.

Next up came the Swedish rock and rollers, The Backyard Babies. And what a performance these lads gave! With a real grasp of reeling in and playing with the audience they joked with the crowd, smiled and delivered pure old style rock and roll in a 2020 package. They even joked about why did they decide to tour in January of all times of the year!
Landing in with “Good Morning Midnight”, “Th1rte3n”, and new single “Shovin’ Rocks” they very quickly established dominance of the place. They deliver an incredible package of hard rock, old time rock and roll and all with a rebellious punk energy. Dregen, the group’s Lead Guitarist, is the epitome of Keith Richards in looks and attitude.
“Nomadic”, “Heaven 2.9”, and “Highlights” kept the place pumping and jumping. This band can only be described as fun, punk, rock and full of attitude that will lift you up and kick your ass. And you’ll enjoy it too. A little down tempo with “Painkiller” before beginning to ramp it back up with “Roads”, “Yes to all No” and “Star War”.
Every so often Nicke and Dregen would jump up onto low metal tables only to be lit up and obscured with smoke. It was a joy to behold and fitted perfectly right in with the performance. The Clash” and “Abandon” finished off their main set but they got a chance to come back and do a few encore songs including “Look At You”, “Dysfunctional Professional” “Minus Celsius”, “Brand New Hate” and “People like….”
Pure and simple, Backyard Babies produced some of the finest rock and roll on the planet and gave a superb performance as they worked the stage like stadium standard professionals. Their fun energetic control of the stage reflected the hold they had over the crowd who were singing their hearts out and bouncing around the floor.

Finally, after 16 years from the last time, comes The Wildhearts. The crowd erupts as they take the stage and Ginger holds sway over a surging court. Blasting into “Everlone”, “Diagnosis” and “Vanilla Radio” the crowd simply goes insane. Ginger acknowledges the turn out in his warm and thick Newcastle accent “I’m feeling the love her folks, i’m feeling the love”.
The solid hard rock and good time headbanging rhythms just fed the energetically joyous response from the crowd. Hands waving in the air, moshing and singing as loud as they could along with the Wildhearts was the order of the evening. “Greetings from Shitsville”, “Let ‘em Go”, and “The Revolution Will Be Televised” just kept the night supercharged for everyone there, witnessing a high firing, on point rock and roll band that encapsulated the high energy, hard rocking attitude that rolled off the stage.
As the joyous and uncompromising moshing continued so did the uncompromising nature of the tunes coming from The Wildhearts. The two seemed to be feeding off each other more and more. Delivering  “TV Tan”, “Top Of The World”, and “Dislocated” Ginger and his bandmates seemed as tight, together and full on as professional band could be.
With a cheeky grin and twinkle in his eye Ginger turned to the packed Limelight and joked that if anyone wants to buy them a bushmills or a paddy powers afterwards they can, not that they should, or need to, but they can.
Finishing off the night The Wildhearts slammed home “Sick Of Drugs”, “My Kinda Movie”, “I Wanna Go Where People Go”. As usual, the crowd refused to move anywhere with the odd loud shouting to call The Wildhearts back on. And they were duly rewarded with the likes of “My Baby Is A Headfuck” and “Love You Til I Don’t” as the crowd were determined to use the last of their energy as they rocked their hearts out along with the band.
To put it simply, normally you would expect the headliners to tear the place up but this night it was a triumvirate of incredible rock that tore up the place from the very first song of the night to the very last. For most people there, it was a half a year’s worth of a hard work out in one single night. Smiles were as broad as Cheshire cats as they filed out of the Limelight.
This was definitely a night not to be missed, all the bands delivered more than they needed to and they all performed beyond the call of duty. You need to see even any one of these bands, but if you get the chance to see what was witnessed in the Limelight, you just do it!
NEWS: @TheWildhearts Slam Dunk Some Serious Rock & Roll In Belfast With @bbabiesofficial & @ckymusic @LimelightNI @dpmetal @dmepromotions It may be mid-winter and, as the colloquialism goes, its Baltic outside, inside the Limelight 1 the temperature was going very quickly from “keep yourself wrapped up, love” to “jaysus, its wile sweltering”.
