♡How to Find Your Skin Type♡

🧸Hey Teddies! My first blog is about how to find your skin type. (I will make a few more posts about how to deal with your skin type the right way, soon!). Knowing your skin type is important because it helps you know what products you need to use in your skin care routine and gives you the knowledge of what your skin really needs. DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor, so please don't come for me😭 (But most of this information is dermatologist-approved!)

The main types of skin types are dry, sensitive, oily, and combination. To find out which is yours go through the skin types below and follow the instructions. Good luck! ;D

★1★ Wash your face. Right after washing it, touch it. How does it feel? If it feels tight then your face is dry. If it feels cleaner then you may have oily skin. If your T-zone (your T-zone is your forehead, nose area, and your chin) feels clean, but your cheeks feel tight, you may have combination skin.

★2★ Pinch your cheek. If it forms wrinkles, you may have dry and/or combination skin. If it is smooth, check if you have oily skin!

★3★ Look in the mirror. What do you see? If you see red, flaky patches all over, you most likely have dry and/or sensitive skin. If your face is shiny you have oily skin. If you have both then you have combination skin.

★4★ Wait an hour after washing your face and dab your T-zone with a tissue. Look at your tissue and check if any oil has gotten on it. If you do see oil that means you have oily or combination skin.

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin the texture is flaky and rough, or you'll see peeling skin.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin then your face looks shiny and feels smooth, and later on in the day, it feels greasy. The oily parts of your face have the most acne or pimples that occur there. Your pores are big, especially in your T-zone.

Combination Skin

The combination skin type is the combination of oily and dry skin. Your face will be oily in the T-zone, but dry anywhere else. You may have more acne in your T-zone than on your cheeks.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin then your skin can be itchy, and get rashes. Your skin reacts to certain products and cleansers that can cause it to get red, itchy, and dry.

If these skin types do not apply to you, congrats!!! You have normal skin and do not have any huge problems to deal with. You have smooth skin, but you'll still have to deal with acne. Special treatment for you isn't needed :)

Skin type refers to how your skin behaves. Type of Skin are typically classified into five main categories: dry, oily, sensitive, combination, and normal.                                     

1. Dry Skin

Dry Skin feels tight, itchy, or rough throughout the day. You may experience flakiness, peeling, or a dull tone to your face, especially when you’re in colder temperatures. Dry skin is caused by an unproduction of sebum, aka your skin’s natural oil. Yes, some oil is actually good for your skin.

2. Oily Skin

Oily Skin has the opposite problem-it overproduces sebum, which makes your face look greasy or shiny. You may also notice other skin concerns like blackhead or enlarged pores. Every skin type experiences breakouts, but oily skin are more prone to pimples, since those enlarged pores are more easily clogged with excess sebum.

3. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive Skin can appear red or inflamed after coming into contact with stressors, including certain skincare products. Your skin may itch, tingle, or burn after using a product. If you deal with other skin conditions, like rosacea or eczema, there is a good chance your skin is sensitive.

4. Combination Skin

Combination Skin is of at least two of the previous skin types. A lot of people with combination skin have an oily T-zone on the forehead, nose, and chin but dry cheeks. Combination skin just means your skin has different characteristics on different parts of your face.

5. Normal Skin

Normal Skin is balanced. It is neither too dry nor too oily. The overall sebum and moisture content in such a skin is balanced but the T-zone on the forehead, chin and nose may be slightly oily. It is the rarest skin type.

If you’re not sure which category you fall into, there’s an easy way to find out.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser that has no active ingredients, and then pat it dry with a towel.

Don’t apply any more skincare products. Wait about a half hour, and then see how your skin looks and feels.

If your face is super greasy then you probably have oily skin.

If just your cheeks are dry, then you may have combination skin.

If your face feels rough and tight, you have dry skin.

If your skin is irritated or red, that points to sensitivity.

How to know your skin type

There are generally 5 skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. I do think you can have sensitive skin while also having other types of skin. See my skin type.

Wash your face with a cleanser and pat it dry (don't wipe it dry, be gentle).

Wait for 30 minutes.

Gently press tissue paper or blotting paper on different areas like your nose, forehead, cheeks, and chin. (Use different pieces for each area.)

Hold up each of the pieces of tissue or blotting paper to a light source and see how much oil is on it.

If you see a big stain of oil on your paper, that area of your skin is oily. Foreheads, noses, and chins are usually the oiliest places. If there is little to no oil on the paper, that area of your skin may be dry or normal. To tell the difference, dry skin usually feels tighter when air-dried like this. If it is very dry, you could also see some dry flakes of skin.
