Tears of Blood

This rage that bubbles under my skin,

White like foam, frothing at the mouth,

Seeps endlessly through every pore,

Slow and steady, sizzling, filling me from the inside out.

My eyes glazed red with blood and brimmed to the tip.

There is a stench in the air, foul and nauseating

That fills my nostrils and the only thing left to do

Is breathing it in until it burns my lungs to ashes,

And squeezes my throat until my face is contorted and my eyes are bulging out.

There is poison in my veins, the colour of it purple like stale, dried blood,

Or maybe the misty evening sky of a cursed city

Waking up from its afternoon nap, drooling from one corner of its mouth.

And it drips... drips... drips…

Slides down excruciatingly slow

With my eyes fixed on it like a hawk circling its prey.

There is calm,

But also urgency,

Like a man gone mad, I watch the poison pooling at my feet.

My fists clenched tight, my nails drawing blood

Just one thing.... one more thing,

One last, simple, little thing to tip me over the edge

To push me violently through the gates of hell.

And I will unleash the night-crawling, flesh-eating beasts I had locked inside all those centuries ago.

I loved you...

I loved you more than God loved his children when he sent them away,

Haggard and pale and crying, begging him to spare them a drop of his mercy.

I loved you more than the rose is red, the snow white, the sky blue,

The night black, and the stars bright.

I loved you like the dusk sky loves the horizon

And gently falls on its welcoming lap and goes to sleep.

I loved you like the pearls adorning the eyes of a mourning mother.

Endless like the Universe, deeper than the Ocean,

My love tip-toed through the gates of heaven,

Even as I sit here as a sinner, with a face even God is averse to.

But You...

Ever beautiful You,

Kind and full of life like a growing sapling.

Wild and chaotic like the storm that rages on the Sea.

Peaceful like the spring evenings I loved so much,

YOU loved me.

And your love was a warm pool of melted light.

Golden like your hair, Golden like the Sun.

It twinkled in your eyes and reflected in mine,

And the creases around cupid's lips testified.

I had forgotten how the winter sun felt on bare skin,

But in the comfort of your embrace and your lips mapping out my skin,

I felt its balming warmth a thousand times over.

No more do I hear your playful giggles,

No more does your sweet voice wake me up from slumber

And remind me of the little blessings to be grateful for in life.

No more do we sit by the Garden and weave flower crowns for our boy

Or make him toys and talk about alchemy.

No..... They took that from me.

No more do I care for this pathetic little life they call 'God's mercy'.

He snatched his hand from mine centuries ago

Even when I pleaded down on my knees,

My feet swollen and my bruised hands joined in silent prayer.

Now all that is left is the blood and the rust

And all this dust that is collected in the corners of my heart.

The birds do not sing and the sun never rises.

The eternal night is almost as disgusting as me.

And the flowers never bloom and our son never smiles.

Our rooms are cold, our hearts colder.

And yet the people in town, carefree as ever,

Make jokes and laugh and drink their nights away.

The world is rotten, eaten from the inside by maggots,

Parasitic creatures crawling under the surface, sucking it dry and dead.

And this rage, Lisa...

All this rage... it gnaws at my chest and peels the skin off the bones with its devilish teeth.

The pain is unbearable, Lisa...

Yet not nearly as painful as the void your absence left in my soul.

And I wish not for it to end.

I crave this pain instead.

For there is nothing more to be had.

Nothing more this world has left to offer.

Nothing to look forward to, nothing to live for.

Only death and blood raining down the skies.

I think I quite understand now,

What God must have felt when he called on the flood.

"A VAMPIRE HUNTER & A MAGICIAN..." Alucard declared, slowly retracting his own body away from both Trevor and the silver blade he held which pierced through his pale—nearly porcelain like skin. "YOU'LL DO." Standing to his full height, Trevor watched bewildered at Alucard's sudden change in demeanor, once a deadly threatening foe now a sort of peace-making pacifist. "I am Adrian Tepes, son of Vlad Dracula Tepes."

Alucard then spoke of his year long slumber beneath Gresit to heal the wounds dealt after fatally attempting to battle Dracula. "So you are the sleeping soldier." Sypha confirmed her suspicions, a sense of relief and gratification washing over her, overzealous after finally completing the mission which placed her life at stake. "I know the stories—I also know Speaker's consider the story to be information from the future." He turns to look at her, "Though...do you know the whole story?" Sypha blushes with uncertainty, "Yes?"

Simply veering his sight elsewhere, Alucard proceeds to reiterate the tale he'd heard beforehand as if it was old as time—"The sleeping soldier will be met by a hunter, and a scholar," Belmont intervened with a tone which could only be described as defeat. "No one told me that."

"Why do you think my grandfather tried everything to make you stay?" Sypha now too interjecting the story, that was now starting to sound more like a conversation. "and they shall seek the eyes of true blood." Both Sypha along with Trevor looked to Alucard in deep confusion. "True blood?" They say in perfect union. Alucard walks to his casket, searching out a long black coat to wrap around his slender shoulders. "Meaning we must search for a pure blooded vampire willing enough to join to our merry trio," Alucard walks past both his newly formed teammates, "unfortunately I know just where to acquire her."

"Come again?" Trevor stomped his way towards Alucard, stopping him from walking without any further explanation. "You're telling me that we have to recruit a full bloody vampire—to kill other vampires? Tch...some goddamn messiah you are."

"I'm sorry to hear the prophecy doesn't quite suit your taste, Belmont. But I assure you that I am any more excited about such fate." He looks to Trevor with a look of certain distaste, grabbing both his sheath and metal sword. "So, what now?" Sypha's brows knit together, taken aback by new prophecy. They begin journeying towards the nearest exit, Trevor leading in front as Sypha and Alucard neared close behind. "Now we travel to Lavatris, in findings of our little true blood."

The Castlevania franchise feels like it's getting more and more divided since Netflixvania started and it's getting really bloody frustrating to the point that while watching Nocturne I've felt disquieted, and I think I've realised why that is.

It's the fucking DmC:Devil May Cry white hair fiasco all over again.

For those that don't know, when the DmC reboot was revealed people had a lot of criticism, including turning Dante from a cool but likeable hero into a foul mouthed smoker, the dumbing down of the gameplay, the antagonism towards the fanbase, and turning his iconic white hair black. Of all these criticism, only the hair colour change was given any attention, painting the fan base in a very negative light and side stepping the real issues people had by only focusing on the cherry rather than the whole sundae.

All this attention directed towards something that in the grand scheme of things is very minor but it gets all the attention while the bigger stuff is ignore.

Yes, there are people mad about the show for racist reasons and they shouldn't be listened to, but there are genuine complaints that are being swept up with that.

The character changes have a sort of domino effect on everything. Maria being a serious revolutionary is interesting, but I saw someone put it best that what made her special was the fact that she was a little girl in a world of classic horror that believed she was in a fairy tale and had the power to force that reality on everyone else. Netflix Maria is good, but lacks the charm of Maria.

The second example is Juste. When I saw him I was very excited, but that was mainly because it was acknowledgement of the original canon than anything else. His magical prowess, the thing that makes him stand out among the Belmont linage, is mentioned and then brushed aside, and the worst ending of his game is what is taken as canon. And once Richter gets his magic back, Juste is gone. He feels like a plot point rather than the character. I sympathise with people who's favourite game was Harmony of Dissonance.

Annette was a compelling character with a well developed story, but anyone that says her original characterisation would never work are being disingenuous because they literally did that, except that did so with Tera. The connections to Richter and Maria, the damsel elements, the fact she gets turned into a vampire, all from Annette. Swapping them around wouldn't work for multiple reasons and I'm not going to say I can do better than people you get paid to write when I don't, but I feel I can say that if they had wanted to they could have done something closer to the original while still touching on the themes and narratives they wanted to.

Olrox... honestly the only criticism I can really think of is the removal of any reference to Count Orlock.

There's an elitism with both sides of the fanbase here. On the Netflix side, there's the feeling that since theirs is more popular that any criticism is because people are just nostalgic, and game fans feel that since theirs is the original foundation that anyone that doesn't agree with them is just a new fair-weather fan. And honestly, I'm more sympathetic to the game fans.

I've seen Netflixvania fans look at people complaining that the character have changed and go "yeah well the version you like sucks so you should just grow up" As if that's going to make everything better. And all the people complaining about the race changes or posting "WOKE?!?!?!" have poisoned the well for any actual discussion about this, not helped by the social media accounts deliberately stoking the flames in the mistaken belief that all publicity is good publicity, which raised the ire of nexflixvania creators. Unfortunately marketing can often be removed from the intentions of the creators.

Yes, Netflixvania is a great show, with beautiful animation and great storytelling, but it's not perfect and as an adaptation is leaves a lot to be desired. And that's the crux of it! The show is good, really good! But it doesn't feel like an adaptation of Castlevania. It's just a bunch of little details that pile up to make it less of what the game fans liked about the series. It's more grimdark horror than classic horror. It's more crude than it is philosophical. It's more hopeless than it is hopeful. And regardless of what you individually think, that's what people have liked about Castlevania for almost 40 years.

Ultimately I just have to ask, why do people seem to assume that you can't make a faithful adaptation while also making it interesting? They're not mutually exclusive.
