Hannibal S3E2 rewatch : PURE BEAUTY

raaaah i need to talk about the beauty of hannibal's valentine gift in Primavera T-T

We all know how deeply love and death are linked, and I always love a reminder.

The fact that Hannibal put the heart on display, right on the memento mori of the Norman Chapel is such a nice detail. A reminder that his gift means renaissance, a rebirth of love as deep and intense as the ever-present power of mortality. It is no coincidence that Hannibal kept a memento mori in his memory palace. No matter how vast his palace is, how strong it stands, a singular reminder of mortality was still necessary. Through his love for Will, he got changed, and in a way, got reborn just as Will got reborn because of Hannibal.

For that rebirth to happen, it needed a death, and I feel like Hannibal's gift is a way for him to highlight how humbling the experience of loving Will is (he didn't expect to get changed by Will and yet Will changed him more deeply than he could have imagined).

Through the teacup shattering (ie Hannibal "killing" both Will & Abigail), he gave them an opportunity to transform, to transcend their previous existence and be born again. What better way to send that message than to sculpt a giant heart out of a dead body?

When Will analyses the scene and says "I splintered every bone, fractured them dynamically. Made you malleable", it reminds me of a korean song called Trivia: Love by RM.

In korean, the words for "Person" and "Love" sound and look almost alike. Person is 사람 (saram) and Love is 사랑 (sarang). The singer uses a lot of wordplay around these similarities, and some of the lyrics translate as:

"I'm just a human, [...] You erode all my edges And make me into love [...]"

Before knowing his love interest, the singer was merely a person (사람, ending with ㅁ, all straight lines), but his love interest eroded all his edges and turned him into love (사랑, ending with ㅇ, eroded edges)

And this is exactly what happened between Will and Hannibal, and that's the message Hannibal conveyed thanks to his gift. By offering a heart, displayed on a very vivid reminder of mortality, he shows Will how much Will eroded his edges and turned his person into pure love, that transcends life and death.

A heart is of course overused as a sign of life and love, but this one, to me, is so very beautiful. Will continues "I trimmed you. Head, hands, arms and legs." -> trimming means to only keep what is necessary, means to get rid of anything preventing the proper growth. What better way to show Will the depth of Hannibal's love than to offer him a gift of essence: the only necessary, meaningful thing left is his heart.

I also love the fact that we can hear the heartbeat in the background, as always when Will analyses a crime scene. And then, Will touches the heart, and for a few seconds, there's only silence. Suddenly, the heart starts beating, and they are joined: instead of the heartbeat only being on Will's side, now the work of art that is the heart is also beating. They are linked through that heartbeat.

The heart turns into the stag, approaching Will. Will gets scared of how close it gets, and ends up falling (in love ;))
