Welcome to the world of Elfhame
I feel like so many people talk about The Cruel Prince (and rightfully so) but not enough about the other books in the same world, so I made a breakdown of them and their reading orders ♡

Bingqiu is so funny to me like,,, you have sexy man turned into an idea of a tumblr sexyman and uh, some guy that watches instagram reels bc “he could never be a TikTok user”
Asdfghjkl that's exactly what they are. No wonder they're so popular on tumblr XD. Sqq is that one reddit user who swears every week that he's leaving this toxic hole for good and you know you'll find him mere hours later arguing pedantry on some incredibly niche sub reddit.
And he's somehow gay married to a guy who underwent an irl sans verse swap with his evil version. Who is his 'I can fix him' blorbo. His poor little meow meow. Lbh would have an aesthetic tradwife account, you know the ones where there's some scandal about them actually being insanely rich and in some weird marriage? That's him. His recording room that looks like an offshoot of a small cosy traditional cottage is actually a renovated spare room in his palace quarters.
They're that one meme about their braincells cancelling each other out. They're so stupid I love them.
Thanks for the ask :D!

Okay. I’m tired of all of this “but he is a morally grey character”. They have killed this trope for me.
To whoever that tries to justify a fictional’s man whole ark of doing nothing but harm to his significant other and killing people have the door right there. No, he isn’t “morally grey”: he is bad. He is evil. All of him is rotten and festering; if he has a soul, it reeks like putrid flesh.
If he did live, he would not deserve a morsel of the love and admiration he has from the readers. He is the kind of man that has me looking behind my shoulder when I walk to home late at night.
“But he kills bad people”. Door. I get the purpose is “noble” and appealing to many readers, but he is the bad man too, and nobody wants to see his demise.
His only characters traits are having a big schlong and a soul darker than the Devil’s.

Me: God I hate romance movies. They're so boring and all the same, the characters are never likeable, and romance isn't even a compelling concept for a movie! I don't give a shit about people falling in love, show me a story about friendship, about the senseless cost of war, about the evil and the good of humanity. There are more interesting and important things in this world than romance!
Also me: *literally only writes romance*

And so Tiktok, the cesspool of filth that it is, strikes again. I guess the dumpster can't handle people appreciating books the way they're supposed to be appreciated: by discussing what it's about and how masterfully crafted it is. Maybe if I post book recs that contain spice levels I won't get community violation strikes? 🙄

This is about a young Korean American woman, Ji-won who is now dealing with her father leaving her, her mom, and her sister. Now her mom has brought in a new man and things spiral down from there.
This book talks about racism, the fetishisation of Asian women, and obsession. This was an unhinged spiral downwards as the main character soon develops an obsession with blue eyeballs.
This was a short novel, at 278 pages, and it had very short chapters along with easy and flowing writing that makes it just run by quickly. I read this in one sitting, I absolutely did not want to put the book down at all.
This was interesting and it was very visceral. I loved the details when it came down to it. And the downward spiral was unhinged and amazing. This is a book that I hope is a contender in the Horror category for the 2024 good reads awards this year. I am so glad I read this and I fully recommend it.
This is the author’s debut and I am absolutely keeping my eyes on this author for her books after this one.

a large portion of my youtube recommended feed has slowly morphed into video essay after video essay ranting about booktok and what a blight it is on society etc etc but I swear like 9 times out of 10 I click on one and the argument usually devolves into “oh women are reading smut? and enjoying themselves? god that’s so fucking annoying and cringe”
like yeah a lot of booktok encourages overconsumption and that’s bad. yes the publishing industry churning out hundreds of poorly edited poorly written works for a quick buck sucks and makes it difficult to sift through it all and find something you enjoy. I think the idea that booktok is just another frustrating aspect of capitalist consumerist bullshit AND the idea that women are often mocked and shunned from experiencing their own sexual desire and deserve to happily explore their fantasies through fiction are two ideas that can definitely coexist. I just don’t see the subject usually addressed with that sort of nuance.

reading my aunt's old copy of edgar allen poe works that she annotated like 30+ years ago as a english major really makes me hate booktok even more because of their obsessions with "annotating" that are, besides being pointless and dumb and meaningless and not even annotating like my aunt was actually analyzing and seeing those notes made me understand the text a lot better and derive more meaning from it, frankly UGLY. "aesthetic" my ass, it's too polished and neat, it's performative, and that lack of genuineness makes it bad to look at. nothing is sexier than underlining that almost crosses out the line below and borderline illegible handwriting tucked into the margins of the page.
