Shame on Israel for exploiting the Holocaust to justify genocide

If my grandparents were alive today, this October would have marked the 80th anniversary of their meeting. In 1943, my grandparents, Isidor and Marianne, met in Theresienstadt, a concentration camp in what was Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. I was quite close to my grandfather, Isi, who outlived my grandmother. Among some of his things, he entrusted me with a yellow cloth “Jewish” star he was made to wear in the camp, with the word “Jude” on it.

At a United Nations (UN) meeting, on October 31, Gilad Erdan, Israel’s UN Ambassador, put on a Jewish star reminiscent of my grandfather’s. Addressing the UN Security Council, he said the reason he wore the star was to denounce their silence regarding the October 7 attack on Israel. Erdan compared this silence to the silence that allowed for the Holocaust to happen. In response to Erdan, Dani Dayan, the director of Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust memorial museum, quickly called out this misuse of the star, arguing that Erdan was “disgrac[ing] the victims of the Holocaust as well as the state of Israel.”

Dayan was absolutely right to call attention to how offensive it was for Erdan to don the yellow star. Dayan’s reasons, however, are entirely wrong. To make his point, Dayan argued that the yellow star symbolizes the weakness of the Jewish people during the Holocaust, continuing a disturbing and false historical narrative.

Zionists have long sought to paint Holocaust victims as weak to make the case for the founding and then maintenance of the state of Israel. These moves began even before the Holocaust when some Zionists aligned themselves with the eugenic racial science of the day, arguing that Jews must purify their own race creating their own strong breed. Arthur Ruppin, a leading social scientist and head of the World Zionist Organization’s Palestine office in the early 20th century, promoted the settlement of Palestine as the answer to the dangerous results of “racial-mixing” for European Jews. He was not alone, as many Jewish intellectuals argued that forming the Zionist state would allow Jews to “regenerate their own bodies” which were degenerated by the conditions of both assimilation and oppression in Western and Eastern Europe, respectively.

Once Israel was founded, Holocaust victims were regularly treated as weak and as examples of the opposite of what the Zionist state represented, leading to poor treatment for those survivors who became Israeli citizens. As Dayan, himself reiterated, the Holocaust represents a cautionary tale about the weakness of Jews in the diaspora to be juxtaposed with the strength of Jews in the State of Israel.

Despite their disagreement, Israeli leaders like Erdan and Dayan regularly make use of the Holocaust to defend state violence against Palestinians. Unlike Erdan and Dayan, learning about the genocide against my ancestors has allowed me to understand that what is happening today in Palestine is genocide. To know a genocide is happening is painful in and of itself. To know a genocide is being carried out supposedly in one’s name (as a Jewish person) is extra painful. But, to know a genocide is being justified through an appropriation of my family’s suffering, is infuriating. I am furious. How dare the state of Israel insult my family’s history.

The horrors that my family endured are unimaginable to most. My grandmother and grandfather, teenagers when they met at the camp, were the only surviving members of their families. My grandfather was part of a resistance in the camp, hiding people who were on lists to be transported to Auschwitz. My grandfather literally saved my grandmother’s life. This is not a story of weakness. However, it is a story from which I have learned many lessons about the conditions that allow for genocide.

I remember being 8 or 9 years old, sitting at the kitchen table for breakfast while my mother cooked. The radio was on as it was every morning listening to 1010 WINS news, “You give us 22 minutes, we’ll give you the world.” In the headlines, a resistance group claimed responsibility for a bombing somewhere outside of the U.S. I asked my mom, ‘What is a resistance group?” She explained the idea of resistance by talking about the Holocaust and her father’s struggle to fight back. While not every person claiming to resist is automatically righteous, I realized when I was older that how one views resistance in any given situation is based on their vantage point. That may seem obvious, but in Western media, politics, and educational contexts, we regularly see an association made between resistance groups and terrorism which creates a taken-for-granted right and wrong side.

In the days after September 11, 2001, as a U.S. citizen living in the United States, I was reminded when I challenged the drive to invade Afghanistan, that I was either with “us” or “against us.” To me, the forced nationalism reminded me of the studies I had taken up during college about the Holocaust. The creation of the “Us vs. Them” mentality to protect Germany was a key part of bringing on board large segments of non-Jewish Germans to the fight against Jewish people.

Resistance takes place against those in a place of power. Also, oppression, by definition, is about being on the losing side of a power dynamic. Then, how is it that, Israel, a country with one of the most powerful militaries in the world, supported by the most powerful military and economic power in the world, the United States, has tried to paint itself as champion of an oppressed people who must fight against Palestinian resistance movements?

Jonathan Greenblatt, director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), published an opinion piece in Time magazine after the October 7 attack, arguing that there is no way to understand Hamas’ attack except as “hate” and “toxic intolerance in its purest form.” Instead of exceptionalizing Jewish experience so that the Holocaust becomes one example in thousands of years of Jewish hatred, what would it look like to pay attention to the real lessons we can learn from the horrors of the Holocaust? The lesson we need is not that Jewish people have always been and always will be hated. The lesson of the Holocaust is that those with economic and political power used nationalism and the idea of so-called inferior types of people being a threat to the nation-state to justify genocide. Many Jewish and non-Jewish people resisted as much as they could. The problem was not a weak resistance, the problem was the strength of nationalist, eugenic narratives.

The good news is that millions of Jewish people and others are undertaking critical study of the situation and pushing against the messages being brought to us by the most powerful Israeli and U.S. leaders. We are standing in solidarity with Palestinians who are fighting for their right to existence and self-determination. We see changes in public opinion polls, and the number of Jewish-led and supported actions against the current genocide is greater than ever before. Many are speaking out and saying loudly, Never Again means Never Again for Anyone."

This new class of literary people operates in an opposing sphere of intolerance, and of cancellation, and, most importantly, of anti-Semitism. Imagine if a writer refused to appear on a panel with someone because they were Black, or a bookstore employee demanded a boycott of a book with queer themes, or if a festival canceled a panel of Latino authors. Such things would never happen in a modern literary setting. Nor could they. The world wouldn’t tolerate it. So why, then, do we tolerate it when people refuse to appear with and patronize Jews?

Don’t tell me that “Zionist” and Jewish aren’t the same thing. Because in this context, they absolutely are. Yes, Elisa Albert has been publicly outspoken in her condemnation of Hamas. She has strong ties to Israel. She was in Israel visiting family on October 7. So perhaps you can excuse her for speaking out against the greatest single-day atrocity against the Jewish people since World War 2. You can have any opinion you like about the war, or about the way Israel has treated the Palestinians. It’s a free country despite the efforts of some people in the literary world. But that does not give you the right to refuse to appear with “Zionists.” That’s not a social-justice stance. It’s bigotry. In a universe of public discourse where everyone who disagrees with anyone is a Nazi, that’s literally Nazi talk right there.

There’s clearly been a change in the literary world since I made my debut on bookshelves nearly 25 years ago. The lit world has always been left-leaning. But a quarter of a century ago, it was also a lot more Jewish. Now, far fewer writers and people who work to support those writers are Jewish. And that’s all for the good. America, and the literary world, has grown more diverse. But Jews still need a place at the table they helped set. If you are trying to ban or cancel “Zionist” writers, then you’re no friend to literature, you’re no friend to the values of freedom and tolerance, and you’re no friend to humanity.

We cannot allow this mindset to continue, and we must continue to call it out whenever it appears. The Elisa Albert situation in Albany may be a small item involving one panel at a provincial book festival. But it’s also a sign that not is all well with our times. People of good conscience need to stand with Jewish writers and artists right now, and not be quiet about this evil that’s creeping over our culture. Jonathan Glazer is not a hero. That’s a fucking awful thing to say. I have many things to say about this so I’ll list them below. First though I will say that the only person who ‘highjacked the holocaust and Jewishness’ was Jonathan himself in his disgraceful speech. He sold his people for money and acceptance from people he should not be trying to please and that is so wrong and pathetic.

1. Regardless of what he actually meant when he said ‘we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the holocaust being highjacked…’ that was incredibly poor phrasing and the fact that so many Jews had the initial reaction of thinking he had meant he refuted he Jewishness is enough to show that he was simply trying to be provocative and did not care who he was hurting in the process. Clearly, he was hurting his own community, or shall I say, the community he so desperately wants to distance himself from. So desperately in fact that he had to state it in front of the Many people who watch the Oscars. Anyway, when you have spent time writing a speech, especially about such a delicate subject, you better be careful with how you chose to express yourself. I mean that should be the bare fucking minimum.

2. In his speech, by blaming the events unfolding in this tragic war where both sides have suffered so much loss solely on the occupation, he did what so many have been doing since the 7th which is victim blame. Not only is it historically incorrect that this conflict is a result the occupation (rather, occupation is something that comes as a result of conflicts not what cause them- to clarify- areas of the West Bank are occupied not Gaza) but it is also disgusting to justify the massacre carried out by Hamas which is what led to this war.

3. It’s so telling when someone gains support from many people outside their community while being called out by their own community who feels betrayed by them. Specifically when it comes to Jews who decide to identify themselves as a ‘good Jew’ to supposedly please non Jews and create an illusion of assimilation when we all know that if the nazis or Hamas or any other Jew hater were pointing a gun at him they would not stop to ask if he was ‘a good Jew’. If this happened in any other oppressed minority, and by ‘this’, I mean one person speaking against the communities values and interests and actively promoting hate against that minority, they would not be praised. Because why would they. They would be called out. By their community and people outside of it. So once again ‘I’m not antisemitic I’m just anti Zionist’ yeah I’m gonna need you to shut the fuck up. The double standards when it comes to Jews is horrendous.

4. Jonathan Glazer is not a hero. He is a coward and a traitor to the Jewish community worldwide. He won an Oscar for a movie about the holocaust and failed to mention the Jewish victims who died in the holocaust and specifically in Auschwitz. Not one mention. In his entire speech. And all because it is suddenly trendy to completely dehumanise Jews whether alive or dead to the point where a jew, who should know better, is doing it too. That is not heroic. It is disgusting and dangerous. It’s been so heartbreaking to see holocaust survivors speak about how disappointed and hurt they were by his speech. If that doesn’t bother you then I suggest you start doing some major self reflection. If you are speaking over these holocaust survivors you are a disgusting human being.

5. Instead of opening up much needed, especially in the current climate, dialogue about the holocaust, he made his movie and the conversation about it about the current israel-Hamas war. By doing this, he completely diminished the scale and horror of the holocaust, that no, cannot be compared to other atrocities, no matter how tragic they are. The holocaust is one of a kind because antisemitism is one of a kind. (I’ll attach a clear explanation of this from rootsmetals at the end of the post). By universalising the holocaust, a form of holocaust distortion, he betrayed Jews that have been fighting since the holocaust for their stories to be heard and remembered.

6. By diverting the attention away from the holocaust, he essentially gave permission to non Jews who have been relentlessly attacking Israel and Jews in general, using the holocaust , to continue doing so with the assurance that they are backed by a Jew. We call people like him a self hating Jew but I digress.

7. This leads me to my next point which is this, by linking his Jewishness to Israel in the sense that he must answer for Israel’s actions, he legitimised any attack of Jews in the diaspora in the name of support for Palestine and the fight against Israel. Because if every jew mush condemn israel or else they are a ‘bad Jew’ then why not just attack us all right? I mean ‘globalise the intifada’ and whatnot.

8. HE DID NOT MENTION THE HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS SLAUGHTERED BY HAMAS ON OCTOBER 7TH NOR THOSE HELD HOSTAGE IN GAZA!!!!!!!!!

There’s honestly so much more to say and I might add more later but I’ll end with this:

Jonathan knew he was speaking in front of a massive audience. He was obligated to speak of the victims of the holocaust. He didn’t. He could have used the speech to speak out against the rise in antisemitism we are seeing all over the world. He didn’t. He should have used he speech to speak about the holocaust survivors who survived a genoside only to be slaughtered by Hamas. He didn’t.

I saw a comment someone made about this speech which I think sums it up well: “In Jonathan Glazer's "Zone of Interest," you don't see one Jew. Those are the best Jews, according to Glazer: the faceless victims screaming in the distance. Ironically, he's the villain: picking up awards from the bodies of those anonymous dead Jews while ignoring the living ones getting slaughtered in the Gaza Envelope by genocidal murderers.”

I’ll leave you with this quote and hope it makes at least one person question their response to Jonathan and his speech.

The explanation mentioned above about the uniqueness of the holocaust and why what Jonathan did is incredibly disturbing-

As great as the exchange of hostages was, we need to remember a few things:

1. Palestinian prisoners are hostages. A lot of them children. False arrests with pretenses of committing violence backed with such poor evidence it’s a disgrace. Also, most of the ‘confessions’ are through brutal interrogation (cc: torture).

2. They arrested just as quick, if not quicker, than they released. They kidnapped people with no charges so they can force them to be part of the ‘exchange’ so that the hostages who WERE supposed to be part of it stay in jail.

3. The stories coming from freed Palestinians are fucking horrific. No food, no water, stripped, left naked, no blankets or pillows, barely a mattress to sleep on, bloodied, beaten, sexually assaulted, raped, humiliated, and straight up murdered. Some of the kids released are detailing how the IOF killed other hostages in front of them. Yeah.

4. They went around terrorizing the families of the hostages meant to be released threatening them & even beating them as a warning to not celebrate.

5. They shot a teenager for celebrating someone’s freedom. The IOF lady said it like it was a perfectly good reason to end a life.

6. They’ve announced Jenin as part of the war zone now and they’re encroaching on more of the West Bank. Ramallah being one of them. Neither are next to Gaza.

7. They’ve killed several Palestinians during this ‘ceasefire’. November 29, 2023: a teenager and a 9-year-old were killed.

8. They are not honoring the ‘ceasefire’. Dozens of Palestinians in Gaza have either been abducted or killed for attempting to go back North.

Not a single hostage held by Hamas has spoken of any mistreatment. These people are leaving happy, smiling, literally shaking hands, laughing with, & dapping with Hamas soldiers. Zionists are losing their minds trying to push forward the ‘“their loved ones are being held hostage obviously they’re doing it so they won’t get hurt” narrative, but considering the hostages released have been reported to be in good health, that seems extremely doubtful.

Take the time to look up some of those statements. One hostage wrote them a thank you note because her daughter felt like a queen with how well they treated her. They gave the kids candy, they allowed the hostages to see & talk to each other, played with the kids if the kids asked. Compared to the ones being given by Palestinian hostages & then watching more get kidnapped is just… and now merciless bombing across Gaza with threats telling people in Gaza to evacuate even more South. There’s no more South left. Don’t quiet down now, you need to be screaming louder than ever. Free Palestine 🇵��
