The best part about making my own dolls is that I can have exactly the doll that I want: height, build, face, fantasy, color.
The worst part about making my own dolls is that I have to make them.

Two of the hand-sewn hats I've made (Yosd 1/6 sized!) Featuring ribbons, little charms, hand embroidery and fancy linings!
It's all done by hand too which is why they take a while, I don't feel like I have enough finesse on the sewing machine for my doll stuff >.<

This past Juneteenth I took the time to pay respect to Black women in particular. Felt right considering Black women have personally impacted me in my own life and has given my existence lasting meaning in more than one way. I felt dolls would do the trick.❤️🥰
Tumblr media
This little lady is an “Orange Tea Dolls - Pollet” in this lovely dark chocolate color. The doll herself matters just as much as my gratitude to Black women. Her name is Hershey. She’s been with me for about five years now, her birthday (arrival) is 12/24/2019, I’m always so charmed on Christmas Eve when I remember how amazed I was when taking her out of her box.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This doll came from a wonderful doll collector as I bought her secondhand, something about the previous collector still sits with her despite her having had a new faceup during her years home with me. Beyond these feelings from her previous owner I also feel this strong, resilient vibe from her. Shes content on being alive and well. I feel these are also traits the Black women in my own family and life possess.
Tumblr media
Hershey is one of my favorite YoSD, which is saying something considering my favorite size of BJD would be the adorable YoSD size and I own quite the little collection of them. She stands out.
I also did some repainting on the wonderful Juneteenth holiday. I’ll save that for another entry. We gotta talk about Miss thang lol 😂

Fixed! @oak23 Thank you for saying it's how He-man figures are repaired; when I looked that up the tutorial gave the exact screw part size and number and it worked perfectly for this. Threaded some small flat elastic through the body (NOT EASY!) and through the eye screw, then tied it as tight as I could. She has good articulation though I'm not sure how well it matches the original ball; perhaps rather better in some directions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some yosd sized shoes fit over her sculpted shoes, as well as *le gasp* Glitter Girls skates!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she is very much a head accessories kind of doll. Er, figure. Whatever. I don't know why I accumulate so many dolls without hair but here we are.

I am weak.
I am so fucking weak.
Tumblr media
But her smile was so captivating. And I think she'll make a nice sister to my Mei Mei (Yoon)...
I don't know yet what I think about the new body. I know a lot of people will like it because it now has double jointed knees and an extra joint in the torso.
I'm personally a bit skeptical, because to me, Youpladolls always meant stability over anything else.
Tumblr media
I still think the old body (left) was her most stable one, even though the hips didn't give that much movement and made finding clothes a bit difficult.
I still miss the wide hips in the second body, even though it was easier to get her into minifee pants, and the double balljoint made posing her legs a lot more versatile. (I still think that it came with the price of less stability, because the joints gave a lot of extra movement.)
The new hip joint seems more stable again, but it also has this pull-out-thigh joint that I hate (because I never use it because it is usually not usable when the doll wears pants, which mine more often than not do). The knee joint is doublejointed now (looks like a peanut similar to Luts and the likes), so more movement there, but we will see about stability. The old knee had some hinges to snap into. We will see about this one.
Lastly... hng. I'm not thrilled about the magnetic feet. If you know me, you know how much I hate them, because the feet get stuck inside shoes all the time. Like... I don't think I have a single pair of mnf feet that has no scratches because of me having to pry them out of shoes with pliers. I actually talked about this with Marie and she said she was thinking of doing what other companies do sometimes (like DFH and Charmdoll), where the hook can rest in the resin to change the feet, but the ankle was too thin to actually implement it. Sad.
She did change the foot size a bit, they're now more in size with Minifee (5cm long), which should make finding shoes easier at least! (Until now, the feet were smaller, so I usually went for YoSD sized shoes for them, but sometimes the feet were too wide for those, so... it was hit or miss).
Anyway.

I'm a Youpla Addict, what else can I say.

Double Box Opening - Gem of Doll Body & DollyZone Body
Here they are, it was a bit hard to get hold of the parcels as my street isn't reachable rn due a construction site and I had to reroute the parcel to my coworker as FedEx failed to deliver yesterday.
But she brought the parcels with her today and I was able to unbox and turn Kanda and Maple into full dolls.
Finally. Kanda's head arrived in December 2022... it was about time. But the body is really wonderful, I only knew the YoSD bodies from Gem of Doll but the MSD body seems to be equally sturdy and I like the scales of the dolls next to each other.
The DollyZone is just so adorable. I will need some research to figure out what kind of shoes she can wear (my guess would be Blythe sized?), we will see =)
Both need clothes sewn. Kanda has.. boots at least.

I recently repainted my sweet little Itsy Betsy as she’d badly damaged her last Faceup by leaping off the shelf in my doll cabinet, trying to take dolls with her. Fortunately no other doll got damaged, and it was the perfect excuse to finally repaint her as I hated the last Faceup I put on her.
Tumblr media
I’m really happy with the changes I made this time around in painting her. She’d been based on a peacock jumping spider, so her old Faceup was really dramatic, but it didn’t suit her. Not only did I soften her look, but I put the extra painted eyes along her cheekbones, which gave me room to put eyebrows on her.
Tumblr media
Quick before and after of her. It’s funny to me how much her body’s mellowed, she needs a good cleaning to match her head again!
The what is what:
Sculpt: Doll Chateau Elizabeth on the Spider body in grey skin
Eyes: Ashuradark on Etsy
Wig: Unknown
Dress: YoSD sized 1/6 dress by Frezje on Etsy
Faceup: Me over at @izasfaceups

I have a character I wanna shell with a doll, but I don’t know how to find the perfect size to be able to carry it around easily in my hands or a bag, and also easily be able to customize it into the character of my dreams.
How do you people get so many dolls and know what to do with them, I can’t even buy a first doll because I don’t know how tiny I should buy…!
I envy you all, in a good way, I aspire to be less indecisive!

The colours don't like as nice in these pictures as they do in person (Artificial light my enemy) but I'm proud of how these have all turned out, especially the silky pink floral one.
They are all yosd size apart from the bottom left black one, that's msd size! I'll be listing these on etsy at some point, I'm making a mixture of fancy decorated ones and simple plain ones like the one in the middle ✌️ They just take several days to make because it's all handsewn 😅

Resizing Human Patterns for BJDs (DoA 2012)
DenofAngels Thread by EilonwyG Transferring here for newer hobbyists. I am concerned that DoA will eventually become a dead forum result in link rot of a TON of useful and important information. Photobucket's purge has already done massive damage to the information that had been shared on DoA before 2015-ish.
All images from the original thread are gone.
Original post date: Apr 19, 2012 https://denofangels.com/threads/resizing-human-patterns-tutorial.513354/ I've had people questioning me for a while now as to how I've resized human patterns. There is a rather detailed tutorial that Dale Rae did on her web site - http://dalerae.com/enlargepattern06.htm It is well done, but requires waaaay too much math. I did try to use this tutorial, but decided there had to be an easier way. Through experimentation, I came up with this method. The beginning of the tutorial follows Dale Rae's instructions.
Steps
Take out the pattern instruction sheet, the first section if there are more than one in the packet. We'll be dealing with the section where they have the pictures of the pattern pieces.
You'll need to scan the pattern pieces into the computer. (They mean the images like this from patterns, I remember seeing this thread back in the day.)
Tumblr media
Dale Rae's instructions call for scanning the patterns in at 125% to make it easier to work with. I've done the same, even though we won't be working with the pattern the same way she does.
Once you've scanned the picture in, you'll want to open it in a picture editing program. I use a program called Xnview. It's a free program you can find and download online. Personally I swear by it, but you can use any program that allows you to resize, cut and edit pictures.
If you haven't already increased the size of the patterns 125%, do that in the picture program.
Save the new size. Then cut each pattern into their own separate picture file and save it in its own folder.
There are a few pattern booklets where the instruction sheet has the pattern pieces at a much larger size than usual. If it appears that the patterns are on the large side, you can skip the increase of 125% step, as essentially, the pattern makers have done that for you.
This [125% pattern] will give you a basic size for a MSD scale 1/4. You will need to tailor the patterns to the appropriate body, as it is not exact for Minifee, Kid Delf, Bobobie mini, Dream of Child, JID, or whatever mini doll. It just gives you the basic size to start from. [BJDs tend to have longer arms/legs. Take some measurements and add to the length and such!]
Once the mini size has been made, from there you create all other sizes you need.
Scaling for other sizes:
SD Scale 1/3 or larger (+125% of the MSD size)
SD is 125% larger than mini (percentage found on another resizing thread on DoA about resizing existing doll patterns for other sizes). As for those dolls over 60cm, use SD patterns and add length to arms and legs were needed, as most are not that far off in chest size for a complete resizing of patterns to be necessary.
YoSD scale 1/6 (58%)
Again from the mini size, resize the pattern 58% to get a Yo-sized pattern for Volks Yo, LTF, Bambicrony, Teenie Gems or other similar sized dolls.
Pukifee / Tinies (15cm) scale
From mini size, resize down to 35% for all Pukifee sized tinies. For Cherishdoll Faith dolls (as I have two of them), resize to 52%. (They're a little smaller and thinner than yo dolls.)
I have not yet come up with resizing for Puki size or other in between sizes. For some, like Minoru world minis and Customhouse Petite Juniors, I would suggest starting with a yo pattern and adding in the length of arms and legs needed, as generally they can fit Yo clothes but are a bit tall for them. Same with 5star yos.
One thing I cannot stress enough is tailoring. As I said, this method will give you the approximate values for the pattern. Once you print the patterns out, I suggest cutting out a mock pattern piece in paper towels (the Viva paper towels are fantastic for this as they're much softer and closer to material) so you can then drape the patterns over the doll, figuring out where material may need to be subtracted or added to get the right fit. This way you won't waste valuable material on an outfit that may not end up fitting correctly. (This is something I did not do on my first outfit when I started sewing for the dolls.)
I would like to also stress that the instruction sheet patterns do not have any of the sewing markers that are generally on the actual pattern piece. You will either need to gauge the general area where these marks are located, or you'll need to consult the original pattern piece.
I have a variety of dolls and sizes in my collection and feel fairly confident that this tutorial covers most of the doll bodies out there. However, I do not own a doll from every company and there may be a few sizes I have overlooked. As I add to my collection, if I end up with a new type of doll body, rest assured I will come up with new numbers for resizing for that doll.
If you see any size not on this list that you would like to resize for, let me know and I can at least see if I have a friend who owns that type or similar for me to borrow and create a size for.
Examples from the thread:

I had SUCH a fun time at the thrift store today I don't even know where to start. I got three bags of lace on sale for like $5 total, four bags of vintage small dolls and dresses, a vintage Barbie baby nightgown, and some household stuff.
I wasn't sure what all was in the clothing bags, and when I opened them I was surprised as hell! There's a bunch of vintage Vogue and Madame Alexander tags in the lot! Most of the dresses can fit 1/6 imomo (yosd ish size) and Rainbow High.
The redhead doll far left is a Furga.
The nightgown looks circa 1982 and is spanking new with tags.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I measured one gob of lace at 20 yards, and I'd bet my hat the rest aren't less than 10 yards each. Some of em are so super cheap and scratchy that I'll be redonating, but the rest were WELL worth it.
