I got Truly Me #26 (I named her Artemis!) second hand with her curls almost entirely brushed out! I found a tutorial on YT on how to fix them but I'm still not quite satisfied with them. I think the addition of the toothbrush and wig spray is just what I need!

How to restore and care for your American Girl doll’s curly hair

Hair issues can be some of the most common, most intimidating, and yet sometimes some of the easiest doll repairs you can do on an American Girl doll. 

Curly hair, especially, can be challenging to handle. They can’t be brushed the way straight hair can, and are a little more prone to becoming frizzy and out of control. Often, secondhand dolls can come to you with curls that seem to be lost forever. 

But that may not always be the case. Curls, waves, and ringlets can, in most cases, be easily brought back. 

Pictured above is Janelle, my mom’s Truly Me #26. Janelle came to her with hair that had been almost completely chopped off. My mom liked it for a while, but then after seeing someone else’s #26 with beautiful curls, changed her mind and decided she wanted her original curls back. I found her an uncut replacement wig, but as it was sold in TLC condition, it was terribly messy. So I sat down with it and worked through it until it regained its original tight, shiny ringlets. After getting the hang of it, this turned out to be one of the easiest repairs I’ve done on a doll. 

Below the cut, I’ll cover a few methods for caring for curly hair, maintaining curls, and restoring curls that have been lost.

because i keep making the mistake of going into ag communities outside of tumblr, i've really been trying to reckon with the consumerism in the fandom, so here's a few reminders if you are into collecting ag items!

this is a hobby! and like all hobbies, it should be bringing you joy. if it's stressing you out, that's probably a sign that you need to step back, which is an absolutely okay thing to do

your collection is valid even if it includes replicas of items originally made by american girl

you do not have to buy items that you don't love just to reach the arbitrary goal of "completing" a collection

you should not be purchasing items that you don't like just for the sake of keeping up with american girl's newest releases

american girl has continuously been showing us that they are much more interested these days in being a luxury nostalgia brand. you do not have to engage with what the brand is currently doing or producing to be a part of the fandom or collecting community

in fact, you do not have to do a lot of research to learn that mattel is not an ethical company. i'm not going to shame anyone who does continue to purchase products from american girl, but please do not be purchasing items from this brand just from a place of consumerism. there are so many small businesses that produce items for ag dolls that you can support, and you can easily find many second-hand american girl products

you should never be spending money that you don't have on american girl

making clothes and items is valid! handmade parts of your collection are beautiful

sry for not making my dolls actual clothes before making them fun accessories but one day she will have clothes and not just arm warmers and socks... probably

the socks are light purple irl and same for the light yarn on the arm warmers. i tried making some eyelets on these socks at the top but it just turned out looking messy bc of the scale, it might work if i move down to 1mm needle tho, idk but might try it eventually. (i posted the vague instructions for the socks in prev post and the arm warmers are pretty much same but without decreases)
