I still can´t get over that fact that Tim ripped off a fringe fandom theory and made Abby and Tommy canon without it even having any impact on the story. Like, dude you chose to go with it so the least you could do is make it matter. Have Buck question whether he was always just a rebound for Abby. Bribe Connie Britton back for a cameo and make it funny when all three run into each other. Just do something with it! Everything that happend in 8x6 could have happend if Tommy was engaged to any random woman

When I think about what purpose this detail served it really makes little sense that they brought Abby up this way at this time.

For Buck the Abby thing was supposed to first make him doubt his trust in Tommy and then double down on wanting this relationship when he realises it doesn't really change anything and he is serious about Tommy.

For Tommy it's supposed to give him a little whiplash, catch him off guard, so he gets overwhelmed and ends the relationship.

They did not need Abby for this though. She's not relevant in the break-up itself, she's just the catalyst that makes Buck think about the relationship more. That could've easily been achieved by, Idk, one of their friends mentioning the pre-Gerrard quitting version of Tommy (Tommy 1.0 if you will).

Josh could've still done his "things were different then, some of us had to hide to be safe" speech, Chim could've thrown a line in about it taking a while, but growing fond of Tommy eventually. (This might've also finally satisfyed people who complain that Tommy being a dick to Chimney was never addressed.)

As far as I can tell the Abby thing was only done because Tim Minear saw us joking about it and thought "you know what would be funny?" (He can't even remember how long the main characters have worked at the 118, there's no way he just remembered a season 1 character's never shown boyfriend's name that was mentioned twice maybe.)

This could've been incredibly funny if they had got Connie Britton to come back for a cameo where all three of them run into each other and who knows, they might still do that, but it won't land as a ridiculous surprise twist anymore because we know now.

So yeah. The way they did it was really bad. It was part of the awful anniversary dinner scene, then it wasn't really important anymore, it wasn't funny, they didn't try to explain how it fit into the timeline with Tommy also being all "being single is easier" around the same time he was supposedly engaged, the 118 somehow didn't recognise Abby (if she was Tommy's beard wouldn't he have at least talked about his fiancée the dispatcher at work?) and they kinda missed their chance at actually making a fun whacky story line out of this.

i’m so glad you brought up that bit in excalibur where magneto’s ideal prison is him getting to be a husband and father again, because it’s so relevant to the idea that the house of m reality isn’t actually everyone’s ideal life, but just wanda’s idea of what everyone’s ideal life would be. all the time i see x-fans condemn magneto for house of m because his ideal world is him becoming exactly like his oppressors, but house of m isn’t actually the life magnus wants! any time magnus gets to become a political leader, he hates it. he hated ruling genosha. he hated ruling krakoa. deep down, he doesn’t want to be superior. he just wants to live in peace with the family he lost.

also, shoutout to magda and anya, who never get to be anything other than magneto’s women in refrigerators. i wish they got to be more important than that. i love it every time we see them in comics, but it’s so rare. and shoutout to magda in particular since she’s been almost completely erased from the narrative by the maximoff retcon. really hope we get a reveal that natalya maximoff was magda all along when we inevitably make wanda and pietro magneto’s mutant children again.

i honestly didnt know excalibur was a predecessor to HoM when i heard about both runs so when i saw that set of panels for the first time it really had me reconsider HoM and the 'ideal reality' bit, im surprised i dont see it mentioned more often

i really wish there were more appearances of mags, magda, and anya; if there are stories focused on them i barely see them talked about... ive heard magda is mags' best-written partner from some but i also very rarely see stories that feature her directly named, so i never get to see her beyond the few fleeting instances i just so happen to catch her. id very much like to see more of her and mags' domestic life....

i think if we find out that natalya was magda all along i'll howl: this family really Can get more complicated contrary to popular belief 💀

My favorite sketch was definitely the one where I actually put in words what it's supposed to convey. I wouldn't usually write that down, cause it's all in my head, but it was useful to do so when sending it to other people. I'll go into it more but here it is just as a teaser:

Lmao first of all, I like how I was teasing "Spanish GP" art, but as per usual, it's just thinly veiled au art. IM SORRY, I'M NOT INTERESTED IN MAKING GENERAL POSTERS, THAT'S NO FUN! So instead you will get weirdly relevant matador au art. I like it a lot though, I was really shocked I was able to draw 3 different Fernandos, I mean even drawing one figure takes a lot out of me, but this was weirdly easy?? I think it's just the effect of not being burnt out anymore, and actually being able to draw with more ease makes me feel like a god.

Okay, so the text: "Fight or Flight?" I'll be honest, I don't even remember why I chose it, literally came to me in a vision 😭 But I think it's fitting with the narrative of this piece. Is it better to keep going on, keep fighting, or better to finally give up, and flee? Not that I even remotely think he should give up, but I feel like sometimes I can sense him pondering this very question. That was the big fear before he announced that he re-signed. Keep fighting and maybe, just maybe, you'll get the chance to finally go up against the bull again. Or accept it's an uphill battle and the fighting is going to keep getting more and more strenous, and maybe it's time to put down the sword. SORRY THIS IS SO ANGSTY FOR WHAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE "yayyyy home race!!!" Please forgive me <3

I. Renault

At some point, someone pointed out to me that I had drawn all other iterations of matador Fernando with a sword, except for Renault Fernando, and that ended up feeling very poignant to me. In a bull fighting match, they really only pull out the sword at the last minute to deliver the killing blow. So I think it's important to never draw this Fernando with a sword, because it shows the unfailing confidence and stability he has at that point. He only needs to pull out the sword at the end, as a formality almost, there's no reason for him to keep his guard up at all times.

II. Ferrari

Meanwhile this Fernando, he's considering his sword like he hasn't had to in the past. He's checking the sharpness, making sure in advance he can do what needs to be done. He's on guard, he feels like he needs to keep up his defenses at all times because he doesn't have that same amount of trust and stability anymore. He knows though he will be up against the (red) bull, at least that's never in question. At least there's the assurance he'll get the chance to fight.

III. Aston

Oh, Aston Fernando....He doesn't know whether to take up his sword or finally put it down for the last time. While at least Ferrari Fernando knows he's on constant guard against the bull, this Fernando doesn't even have that assurance anymore. He feels like he can never put down the sword, just in case he gets the chance to strike the killing blow on the bull, which feels like it's growing more and more unlikely.

Spanish flag: ? Lmao this was meant to be something to celebrate Fernando's home race and it turned very introspective whoops. Also got the Napoleon quote in there hahaha, can't escape it!! Shame though there is no French gp anymore, if so I'd probably draw an unhinged thing for it :,(

I'm so worried about my cat. The vet said I'm doing everything right and that he just needs his meda adjusted but he is so tired and isn't really eating and I know he is old but I can't help but feel like he could live a few more years if he just never got constipated. But it keeps happening and it keeps stressing him out and none of the meds work long term. And I'm just so tired and sad and he is napping on the opposite end of the room because he wants to be alone and that's gotta be the scariest part. Gothmog, Thuringwethil, and bonus Tevildo

i was digging around in my files and rediscovered some really old silm art of mine, including my original angband trio designs (mostly traced off heroforge models lol):

and they're actually pretty cool! thuringwethil's tail is maybe a little questionable of a design choice (how are you supposed to fly with a giant tail flopping around...) but it looks really good on gothmog.

i don't really remember what i was doing with sauron (he looks a little like early curufin for unknown reasons) and idk what the wrist things are supposed to be, but Original Flavor Thuringwethil was actually a corrupted maia of manwe (eonwe's sister?), hence the feathers instead of traditional bat wings. for Original Gothmog i am less sure about his origins but he is possibly a corrupted maia of ulmo (originally a sea serpent, hence the tail and ulmo style ear-fins) who basically dried up into a more stone-based serpent

anyways i think I might keep thuringwethil's face/wing design and gothmogs full design for future use

dare I say this patch is better than the entire penacony arc, for me at least. idk, it feels less dialogue-heavy than penacony. the characters are still using more words than they need to, but not to the point where i question if their throat is getting dry. except aglaea, I think 😭 but i think that part was intentional lmao. all in all, definitely left an impression, but a foreboding one.

Ngl atla AUs are so funny in the sense that white people don't really exist in the original avatar universe.

I think these concepts of putting your favorite characters into such a rich and interesting world and the allure of making them benders is fun and I enjoy it myself from time to time but. There is Something be said about inserting white characters into an inherently poc centered story and world that draws inspiration from those cultures, so it falls kinda flat. (And could even come across as tasteless since the story is again inherently a poc one and has such political? I guess. Themes as like the main conflict ignoring it kinda takes away from half the worldbulding or whatever. Whaaateeeverr idk)

Again this isn't like hate to people with atla AUs I enjoy them but idk food for thought.
