Well, another Santa Barbara Writers Conference come and gone.
It’s like both a family and alumni reunion at the same time. Except you actually go be a family and take all your favorite classes again to remind yourself why it was so important to you. And, you know, it’s living and breathing the writeblr tag for a week.
I definitely think one of the larger regrets of my life is going to be having been “reasonable” and not attending from 2002 to 2018. 16 missed wonderful years.
The downside is that we still live in the age of Covid. I feel fine and haven’t tested yet but I would definitely classify myself as at high risk now. 1 person went home Wednesday. 4 people went home Thursday. And the allergy attack one of my own subgroup was having at our table last night turned out to be covid and as of now at least two of us have it.
So, I am locked up in my room and I have now contacted everyone I can, I think. And now I’ll rest and try and figure out what to do next. Probably figure out about getting tested. And dream that it’s next year so I can go right back.

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

"How am I the positive influence on this child?" Jason asked, shocked.
Talia walked over to Jason who was playing with toddler Damian.
Talia (worried): You told him?
Jason (holding a toddler Damian): For the... Hundredth time, I have not told him!
Talia: Okay, okay... Not any of his "sons" either?
Jason (annoyed): No.
Talia: Okay, I'm working on how to tell him. Damian is still a baby, I have time, currently convincing father to not kill Br-
Jason (disbelief): Talia... He's 3.
Talia: No, he's at least 1.
Jason looks at Damian as the toddler plays with a squishy ball.
Jason: He is 3. We met up 3 years ago when I saw him as a baby.
Damian: 3!
Jason: He also can talk.
Talia: Oh... I thought he was just an advanced baby. Nutty world.
Talia walked away laughing. Jason pinched the bridge of his nose.
Jason: The revenge will be worth it.
Damian yawned, resting his head on Jason's chest.
Jason (smiling): And you are a cute kid.
First part ---> Jason Todd knew about Damian Wayne's existence way before Bruce

I think we as a fandom need to have more talks about ✨dramatic✨ Jason running his own AO3 blog where he posts increasingly violent and heart wrenching stories about Robin. (The second Robin. Because he’s absolutely self inserting.)
And the Batfam find out about those fic that have a startlingly detailed layout of the batcave and accurate patrol routes that they choose to investigate (by reading the fics, duh) and growing increasingly upset about how the characters are portrayed.
Especially Robin.

johnny has always known simon to be quiet, introverted. it’s possible to get him talking when they’re alone, sure, but generally simon happens to be content listening to johnny speak, more than anything. a man of few words, as all the privates would say.
he expects it to be the same way when simon is at home, with family—but dear god, was johnny wrong to assume so.
it’s a whole new side of simon, when he’s with his family. and johnny kind of adores it.
simon complains when his mum asks for the nth time when’s the wedding? and looks pointedly at johnny. simon gets into lighthearted brotherly spats with tommy about the most insignificant things. simon and beth exchange their dry wit and shitty jokes. simon is loud and lively when he plays with joseph.
it takes some adjustment for johnny, at first, to get used to this strangely extroverted version of simon. but he certainly doesn’t hate it—if anything, it has him feeling inspired by simon’s mum by the end of the night.
maybe he’ll start asking simon when the wedding will be. perhaps that’ll speed things along.

it's not like they live on a mountain with other monkey citizens running around
Or also known as Oz trying to flirt (??) but it backfires on her.
set after BMW when Oz is living on Mount Huaguo, hence the hanfu and the neater hairdo
I think I'm also slowly getting the hang of drawing Sun Wukong without having to look at 81 reference images

wendy and dipper's dynamic is so important to me.
i know she's often categorized as just his crush, but i truly think she's the first REAL friend dipper's ever had outside of mabel. we know he struggles to make friends back home and tries really hard to be mature.
we also know wendy tries to be mature for her age, too. she's the youngest of her friend group and tries really hard to put on a whole cool, chill exterior: but she's just as stressed and anxious under the surface.
the whole "you were a freak" scene during the mystery shack party is further evidence of this.
dipper lets her be a kid again. WHICH SHE STILL IS. she's only fifteen, even though from dipper's perspective that's impossible cool and adult. she's not even old enough to drive. she still has nightmares about her mother dying. she's the only girl left in her family at home. dipper gives her a chance to not be so grown-up for once.
in almost every instance we see them hanging out, they're genuinely having a good time: building golf cart ramps, making up security camera games to pass the time at work, playing video games. friendship comes VERY easy for them. when dipper isn't freaking out about how to talk to her, they get along very well and seem to enjoy the same activities.
they keep each other's secrets. she often corrects robbie when he takes a jab at dipper and invites him to parties. she tries to make him look cool in front of her friends after what he did in the convenience store.
she gives him her hat. she takes his.
i've seen some folks say that it wasn't fair that mabel got close friends over the summer, and dipper didn't get any. to me, that's missing the obvious: he got wendy. they're best friends.
i think it's so important that it's NOT a one-sided dynamic. sure, he liked her -- of course he liked her. who wouldn't??? but he DOESN'T go the route of bill and gideon; he accepts the friendship, treasures it.
that's so fucking good.

The party is full of elaborate costumes, but something about this person catches Charlie’s eye. Ghostface has been lingering in his peripheral vision all night, throwing deliberate glances in Charlie’s direction, making his pulse race just a little faster. There’s something familiar about the way the masked figure moves, the confidence in the stance, the way their eyes—though hidden in the shadow of the mask—seem to fix on Charlie from across the room. Charlie knows he’s being watched, and he can’t help but feel the slow heat of curiosity rising in his chest. He’s always liked a little mystery, but this? This feels like it’s more than just a stranger at a party. Ghostface hasn’t said a word, but every time Charlie’s eyes meet the mask across the room, it’s as if the air between them tightens, like they’re sharing a private conversation no one else can hear.

wish list
Tumblr media
summary: dean shares his christmas wish with you
pairing: dean winchester x female reader
word count: 845
warnings: fluff, mutual pining, confessions, idiots in love
a/n: a short and sweet piece for day one of the Promt-Mas 2024 event in our lovely supernatural writers community; prompt 1 'all i want for christmas'
Tumblr media
“What do you want for Christmas?” you asked, phone cradled to your ear.
It was a simple question, one that had been asked many times before, yet it still made Dean stop in his tracks as he hesitated over his answer.
“And don’t say pie,” you added playfully, pulling a chuckle from his lips.
“Well, I can’t answer your question then, sweetheart,” he teased.
“Oh, c’mon!” you groaned. “There has to be something you want.”
Dean sighed, kicking his feet up on the table in the war room as he leaned back in his chair. He’s starting to feel like he never leaves this spot, sitting here like a sad puppy waiting for you to walk through the bunker door ever since you left two weeks ago, eager to help Jody and Donna work a case; a case that ended in the three of you taking a girls trip to some retreat in the mountains.
He wanted you to come home.
“Dean?” you called softly, pulling him from his thoughts when he took longer than usual to answer.
“I don’t want anything,” he lied, shrugging his shoulders despite the fact you couldn’t see him.
“Liar,” you laughed, easily picking up on his fib.
He couldn’t help but smile, the fuzzy feeling settling in his stomach once more at the realization of how well you know him.
“What do you want?” he asked, hoping to flip the spotlight onto you.
“Nuh-uh,” you tsked. “You’re not getting out of this so easily, Winchester.”
“You’re a real pain in the ass, you know that?” he joked, voice laced with laughter.
“I can be even worse!” you threatened with a laugh. “What if I guess? Will you tell me if I guess it?”
“Sure, why not?” he agreed, mainly because he knew you’d never get it right.
He listened with a grin as you rambled on, listing every possible thing that came to your mind for what he may want. Some were things that he himself didn’t even know he wanted, and while he did admit to them being good ideas, he remained adamant they weren’t his main wish; yet still refused to give an inch as to what that may be.
“Would you stop being so stubborn?” you huffed in exasperation, knowing you should admit defeat but not wanting to; you were just as stubborn as him when it came down to it.
“Why is it so important to you?” he asked with a laugh, finding your irritation over the situation rather endearing.
“Because you’re important to me,” you told him. “I don’t want to get you just anything and call it a day. Yeah, I have some things for you already, but I want you to have something that’ll make you truly happy. Something special, y’know?”
Dean fell silent after your explanation, your words bouncing around in his head as he tried to think of what to say, as he wondered how best to tell you.
“Are you embarrassed to tell me or something? Because you should know by now that I’d never-”
“Come home,” he said quietly, cutting off your speech.
“Stop trying to change the subject,” you chuckled, not understanding what he was telling you.
“No, I-” he started, taking a shaky breath. “That- that’s what I want.”
“You… want me to come home?” you questioned, clearly confused.
“I want you,” he admitted, his heart hammering against his ribcage so fiercely he wondered if you could hear it.
You fell so silent on the other end that he actually had to pull the phone away to make sure the call was still connected.
“Me?” you finally asked, voice barely above a whisper.
“You,” he confirmed, chuckling nervously. “You’re what makes me happy, sweet girl. Hell, there was a point that I thought I’d never be truly happy again… and then one day, you showed up. There’s nothing that’ll be more special to me than you, sweetheart."
“So… what you’re saying is that I don’t need to spend money on you this year?” you asked playfully, trying to cover up your nerves with a joke.
He let out a laugh, feeling some of his nerves starting to settle. “I’m saying all I want for Christmas is you.”
“Only for Christmas, though, right?” you wondered, and Dean could just about hear the grin you wore.
“Well,” Dean said contemplatively. “I was thinking I might keep you for, say… rest of our lives?”
“Are you seriously confessing your love with a phone call?” you asked with a giggle, feeling giddy beyond belief.
“No,” he said casually. “I’ll wait until you’re finally home to really say those words.”
“Oh, okay,” you replied in understanding. “Well, guess it’s a good thing I’m home, then.”
Before he could respond, the bunker door screeched open as you finally stepped inside, and he quickly met your gaze as you grinned down at him from the railing. He matched your grin, standing from the chair as he ended the call.
“Well,” you called down to him, laughing with glee. “Don’t you have a confession to make?”
