On the World Health Organization's list of 10 chemicals of major public health concern, lead is a familiar villain. The toxic metal contaminates air, soil, water and food, and builds up inside bodies over time. Its most widely publicized health impact is neurological damage in children, often measured in the loss of intelligence quotient (IQ) points. But lead's pernicious effects don't stop in childhood nor at the brain. According to a new study in the journal Lancet Planetary Health, an estimated 5.455 million adults worldwide died in 2019 from cardiovascular disease (CVD) attributable to lead exposure — a toll more than six times higher than a previous estimate. The study goes on to provide what its authors say are the first monetary estimates of the total global cost of these lead-attributable deaths, along with the magnitude and cost of IQ loss in children under 5 years old. For 2019 alone, the study puts the combined toll of cognitive damage and CVD mortality at $6 trillion (based on projected loss of future income and an economic measure known as value of statistical life), with the greatest burden falling on low- and middle-income countries.

A video which claims that the World Health Organisation is bringing in new rules which will undo human rights protections, take away national sovereignty, and reduce the “value” of humans, has been spread online, including by a suspended Northern Irish doctor. These claims about the World Health Organisation (WHO) have no basis. However, they are regularly repeated online despite the “rules” they reference being publicly available. The WHO is a regular target of conspiracy theories, particularly arising out of its role encouraging health protection measures during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The WHO is developing [...] a pandemic treaty and amendment to the existing International Health Regulations (IHR) that will remove the Human Rights protections currently embedded in the IHRs, will enforce surveillance, censorship, get rid of freedom of speech, and require governments to censor and only push a single narrative,” a woman in a video shared on social media says, in front of an EU logo. On-screen, a caption reads: “No way she said this out loud?” The lack of context to the video clip about the WHO has led some people to believe that the woman speaking in the video, Meryl Nass, is a member of the WHO, while other posts have been spread online that make this claim explicitly. However, she is not: Nass is in fact a doctor from the US state of Maine, and her licence was suspended in 2022 for multiple infractions after a board found she “exhibited incompetency” and that her model of practising medicine during the pandemic was “unsafe for patients”. The WHO video shows part of a speech given by Nass in May last year, at an event attended by various Covid-19 conspiracy theorists. The speakers at the event promoted disproven treatments for Covid-19, including ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, as well as baseless claims about vaccines’ effects on fertility.

Hey all you know tuberculosis right? That old timey disease. When was the last time you heard of someone dying from it? What if I told you that 30,000 people died of Tuberculosis LAST WEEK.
Now tuberculosis is curable. A key drug in the treatment of TB is Bedaquiline which Johnson & Johnson owns the patent for. It cost about $1.50 (USD) per pill. It is was created in 2003 and the patent is due to expire this month. After this generic version of the drug can be made lower the cost to 50c per pill. Which is vital in poorer nations as we can see from the comment posted below. HOWEVER in 2007 the filed a secondary patent. Meaning the drug will
To put it simply I am not happy about this. The secondary patent is an addition to the first and does not make major changes to the drug. The need to enforce this patent is purely motivated by greed. Which is not right. Johnson & Johnson is big company so it is hard to avoid but I want it to be know that decisions the company is making is going to have an impact on the world today.
People will get sick and die. It is estimated that if the patent was allowed to expire over 6 million lives would be saved over the next 4 years due to increase access.
So I just ask that you keep this in your minds and spread awareness of this decision made by Johnson & Johnson and if you have the time let them know you are unhappy with this decision.

Am I the only one who thinks people who only want info from the DSM and not the ICD are like, *dangerously American-centric?* The idea that the American version is the *only accurate authority on this* just rings a shit ton of alarm bells for me, I just think it's really sketchy. Like, if you're disregarding fucking *Britain's* resources of all things, I'm sure as hell these people wouldn't take medical information that originates from *other* countries as well. idk. Eurocentrism isnt the term, I'm pretty sure it's literally just American Nationalism. :/
This is totally on point! And the ICD's not just Britain either, right? Isn't the ICD created by the World Health Organization? As I understand it, this is the international standard.

WHO: "Five years, 10 years, 20 years from now, what are we going to see in terms of cardiac impairment, pulmonary impairment, neurologic impairment? It’s year five in the pandemic, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about it."

US considers accepting Gaza refugees
The Biden administration was considering accepting some Palestinians from the Gaza Strip into the United States as refugees, CBS News reported.
Senior officials from several US federal agencies discussed options for resettling Palestinians from Gaza whose immediate family members were US citizens or permanent residents, the report stated, citing internal federal government documents.
The report said coordination with Egypt would likely be needed to get additional Palestinians out of Gaza and process them as refugees if they have US relatives.
More than 34,500 Palestinians had been killed since Israel launched a retaliatory offensive on Gaza following a cross-border Hamas attack on October 7 last year, Gaza’s health ministry reported.
World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern on Tuesday about a possible Israeli ground offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
A full-scale invasion on Rafah would be a humanitarian catastrophe. We appeal to Israel not to proceed. We urge all parties to work for a ceasefire and lasting peace.
His statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised an offensive on Rafah on Tuesday despite reports of a possible ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Netanyahu declared that the Israeli army would enter Rafah to destroy Hamas battalions there “with or without a deal.”
French peace activists condemned the “spiral of hatred and massacres in the Middle East,” calling for an end to the war in Gaza, Deputy of the French National Assembly Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, said on X.
This morning, in two very different newspapers, Le Figaro and Libération, two editorial writers, Renaud Girard and Serge Jules, denounced in the same words the spiral of hatred and mass murder in the Middle East. They point out the obvious: the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the political prospect of a two-state solution. A must read.
