Verbal Judo
The other day I heard this on the radio while driving:
I was very intrigued by this as I have been a student of "Verbal Judo" for some years now. I work with people a lot, mostly when they are not at their best (I work with the very ill and those who care for them). Also being I am an introvert and that I can be ironically, um, very vocal, having some insight on how to structure speaking with others when I and/or they are not at their best is super helpful. And truly it has been! I prefer the audiobook by the way and listen to it a lot when jogging, driving, or whatever. Whoever they got to read it I thought was the author reading his own book so it is a very good listen.
Anyway, back to the intrigue of the podcast. When I heard this piece I wondered if this helped shape or influence Mr. Thompson's passion to create a learnable structure for better communication especially in stressful moments ("Verbal Judo").
I'm going to give this podcast a listen and let you know what I learn. If you have listened, no spoilers please!

Empowering Success: Ronald Reaganโs Enduring Leadership PhilosophyBy David Dantes, Goizueta Leadership Journal
Ronald Reagan once famously stated, โThe greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest thingsโ (Reagan, as cited in Entrepreneur, 2019). This quote captures the heart of Reaganโs leadership philosophy: genuine leadership is measured not by individual achievements but by empowering others to reach their potential.โฆ

Why Many Modern-Day Jobs are Detrimental or Useless to Society
In the contemporary world, a significant number of jobs have been criticized for being either detrimental or useless to society. This critique has been fueled by growing concerns about the negative impact certain professions have on individual well-being, the environment, and the overall social fabric. The concept of "bullshit jobs," popularized by anthropologist David Graeber, highlights the existence of jobs that contribute little to society while consuming time, energy, and resources. In this discussion, we'll explore why some modern-day jobs are viewed as detrimental or useless and examine the implications for individuals and society as a whole.
Detrimental Jobs: Harmful to Society and the Environment
Environmental Degradation:
Many jobs in industries like fossil fuels, fast fashion, and industrial agriculture are seen as detrimental due to their significant contributions to environmental degradation. These jobs often involve activities that harm ecosystems, contribute to climate change, and deplete natural resources. The environmental cost of these industries raises questions about their long-term sustainability and the moral justification for their continued existence.
Exploitation and Inequality:
Certain jobs are criticized for perpetuating exploitation and widening social inequality. This is particularly evident in low-wage, labor-intensive industries where workers endure poor working conditions, long hours, and minimal pay. The existence of such jobs reflects a system that prioritizes profit over human dignity, contributing to the perpetuation of poverty and social injustice.
Misallocation of Talent:
The financial sector, especially roles focused on speculation and high-frequency trading, is often cited as an example of jobs that misallocate human talent. While these roles may generate significant profits for individuals and corporations, they contribute little to the real economy or societal well-being. The focus on financial manipulation rather than productive innovation can lead to economic instability and undermine the broader social good.
Perpetuation of Harmful Industries:
Jobs in industries like tobacco, arms manufacturing, and junk food production are seen as detrimental because they perpetuate products and services that harm public health and safety. These jobs often exist in direct conflict with societal goals like reducing disease, promoting peace, and improving quality of life.
Useless Jobs: The "Bullshit Jobs" Phenomenon
Lack of Meaningful Contribution:
According to Graeber, a significant number of jobs exist that provide little to no meaningful contribution to society. These "bullshit jobs" include roles such as corporate bureaucrats, telemarketers, and certain types of middle management. Employees in these positions often feel that their work is pointless, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and a sense of alienation.
Artificial Job Creation:
In some cases, jobs are created not because they fulfill a societal need, but because of artificial demand generated by economic or corporate structures. For example, many administrative roles in large organizations may exist simply to manage complexity that could be avoided or streamlined. This creates a situation where resources are spent maintaining inefficiencies rather than addressing real societal challenges.
Psychological Impact:
The existence of useless jobs can have a profound psychological impact on workers. When people feel that their work lacks purpose or value, it can lead to stress, anxiety, and a decline in mental health. This, in turn, can reduce overall productivity and contribute to a broader sense of societal malaise.
Resource Waste:
Useless jobs consume valuable resources, including time, energy, and money, that could be better spent on addressing pressing social issues such as healthcare, education, and environmental conservation. The opportunity cost of maintaining such jobs is significant, as it diverts resources away from potentially transformative projects.
Implications for Society
Economic Inefficiency:
The proliferation of detrimental and useless jobs can lead to significant economic inefficiencies. When large portions of the workforce are engaged in activities that do not contribute to societal well-being or actively harm it, the overall productivity and resilience of the economy suffer.
Moral and Ethical Concerns:
The existence of such jobs raises important moral and ethical questions about the nature of work and its role in human life. Should jobs that harm the environment, exploit workers, or contribute little to society be allowed to continue? How do we balance economic growth with ethical considerations?
Need for a Paradigm Shift:
Addressing these issues may require a fundamental rethinking of our economic and social systems. This could involve redefining the concept of work, prioritizing jobs that contribute to the common good, and creating policies that encourage meaningful employment. A shift towards a more sustainable and equitable economy might involve promoting green jobs, supporting social enterprises, and investing in education and healthcare.
The critique of modern-day jobs as detrimental or useless highlights the need for a deeper examination of the role of work in society. As we face global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and social fragmentation, it is crucial to question whether our current economic structures are serving the greater good. By rethinking the types of jobs we value and prioritize, we can work towards a more just, sustainable, and meaningful future for all.

Oh wow, this is an excellent post! These are the kinds of things I wish I knew when I wrote my meta on philosophies of justice in YR a while back. The focus on what rehabilitative justice looks like in theory and practice was especially interesting to me, living in a country where justice is much, much more retributive, even for minors.
(This may not be a popular opinion for me to hold in this fandom, but an ending where Wilhelm and Simon get a sweet Happily Ever After wonโt feel fullyโhopeful? cathartic? somethingโto me unless itโs also an ending where August has a fighting chance at rehabilitation. I donโt condone what he did one bit, but I also donโt want to see a scenario where heโs never able to change and growโor worse, where he becomes a repeat offender, forever trapped in a cycle of hurting others and himself. I also find โrehabilitationโ to be a more interesting idea to explore than โredemptionโ which is a word that feels like it carries too much baggage from fandoms past. We donโt have to see it all happen onscreen but I just want to know thereโs the possibility of it, somehow.)
The notes on Simon and Wilhelm and how they fit into things was also fascinating. Itโs clear to me that Lisa set all the crimes up to be very entangled, and didnโt create space for an easy solution. I have no idea how sheโs going to untangle all of it in six episodes, but Iโm so curious to see how everythingโs gonna play out.
Thank you so much for sharing, @sflow-er!
YR Season 3 speculations: a laypersonโs take on the criminal justice side
Iโve been considering making this kind of post for a while, because Iโve seen a lot of hopeful takes on how things are going to play out now that Sara has called the police, and I feel like I could add some perspective for those less familiar with the Swedish justice system. I hesitate to do it because Iโm just a layperson and not even from Sweden but the next country over - but our justice systems are reasonably similar, Iโve spent a lot of time poring over relevant sources on Swedish law and justice, andย @scatteredpiecesofme encouraged me to do this after our conversation yesterday.
So, here goes, haha.
As usual, I could very well be wrong about some things, and I welcome any additions or corrections!
#young royals#simon eriksson#wilhelm young royals#august young royals apparently#philosophies of justice#I also really liked the note about Wilhelm with the gun#I really struggle to find any sexiness in the scene where Wille is waving the gun around#This series feels too grounded in reality for me to see it as a moment of stylized violence#and thereโs too much gun violence surrounding my life anyway#(in middle school I had to sing at the funeral of a schoolmate who died in a shooting accident)#(My workplace went into lockdown this year because of a nearby shooter)#(and those are just the two most recent examples I can think of)#(plus congress is always messing with my cityโs gun laws because technically they can take away our right to self-governance at any point)#(SO YES ANYWAY sorry I cannot join in on that shared fandom experience)#Please ignore my tangents and read this post instead it is very informative

Whenever I see men talking about rape incidents analytically and giving it a political angle, I'm always stunned by the audacity. The only reason you can talk about it "logically" is because the chances of this happening to you are slim, or negligible compared to an average woman. Because you know you won't be subjected to the same violence and game of power control. Because unlike women, your mind doesn't draw a parallel to every single time you felt unsafe. Because you don't hear "be safe and aware of your surroundings" from your families every single day.
All the self proclaimed "straightforward" and "blunt" men who call women "too emotional" and "crazy" for reacting as we do, as if reading these cases happening daily in multiple numbers doesn't give you enough trauma. It's frightening.
How am I supposed to trust any guy I come across my workplace, or city? This incident in Kolkata was just one highlighted amongst thousands of cases buried in files, half of them go unreported due to family pressure and public image. The actual numbers are way more horrifying and grotesque.
How am I supposed to trust any man I come across? Because what are the odds?
This 'meet new people, make friends, have fun, create memories' philosophy is irrelevant because women live in constant fear.
This fight or flight mode affects our nervous system.
This affects our emotional intelligence.
This affects our health.
This affects our Lifestyle.
But please, do go on and enlighten me how I'm exaggerating, overreacting and should calm down.

thinking about chrollo in a Normal relationship (he's still a possessive weirdo at times but not so much as his yandere counterpart)
affection is a strange concept to chrollo.
as your relationship progresses and your bond deepens, how he expresses it changes. what started out as grand, romantic gestures meant to dazzle you steadily softens. he isn't familiar with authenticity โ it's a stranger he thought he'd long cut ties with. your presence in his life has him wondering if he should rekindle the acquaintanceship.
you don't need a fancy dinner with a breathtaking view of the city skyline. you just need him. his intentionality. texts throughout the day of his various musings, the genuine kind, untainted by constant attempts to woo you.
This first date to my side is developing nicely. The guy's complaining that his philosophy professor 'refuses to challenge her own innate subjective worldview.' Direct quote Who do you think his paper was about? My money's on Hegel. Turns out it's Nietzscheย who foiled his future in academics He corrected her pronunciation (they're both wrong) 'Global warming is a red herring, religion will be the unraveling of society, not some carbon monoxide' She's checked her watch five times in the past minute Do you think this misunderstood intellect will get a second date? Or will fourth-wave feminism get in the way of true love?
you don't know how to describe the shift. he's never come off as anything but confident, but now it's like he's actually comfortable with you. relaxed. it's odd โ nothing's changed, yet everything has. 'your place,' becomes 'our place.' he has a preferred seat at your dining table. he's familiar with your workplace drama and requests updates, setting your freshly prepared drink next to his wine glass as he does so.
commercials advertising wedding rings make him feel strangely warm. he's somehow breathless after kissing you, despite supposedly having complete control over his body. he traces his finger over your signature, wondering how it'll look when your surname matches his. he doesn't just chuckle at your antics anymore, he laughs freely, his face sore from how wide you make him smile. your lexicon bleeds into his.
he says that you taught him how to love. it's a claim you mistake for one of those clichรฉs he spouts just to make you groan and roll your eyes. maybe it would've been an empty platitude at first, but now, it couldn't be more true.
#he will continue to commit atrocities without hesitation but he's all googly eyes over you so it evens out kinda#i love him he's my babygirl#chrollo x reader#chrollo brainrot#concepts
