The Little Cloud and the Clear Sky
A Bedtime Story for Children Inspired by Tibetan Buddhism and Mindfulness Once upon a time, high above the Earth, there was a vast, clear sky. The sky stretched far and wide, so peaceful and bright that everyone who looked up felt warm and safe. The sky never worried; it didn’t change or rush. It simply was—always calm, always clear, like a gentle friend watching over the world. One morning, a…

[Why do some people stay in your life for long but not others?]
“We come together when conditions bring us together, and part when conditions separate us.”
This is a quote from Master Shinran in Section 6 of Tannisho. Your parents, grandparents, siblings, lovers, husbands, wives, children, friends, bosses, subordinates - you met these people because you had the conditions for you to meet.
Some people may have already left your life, such as people you haven't seen since graduation, people you dated briefly but fell out with and broke up with, or people whose time on this Earth has come to an end. In this quote, Master Shinran said you were separated from them because you had the conditions to be separated.
“To be or not to be with someone depends on conditions.”
There are people that you don't really try to spend time with, but for some reason they are always in your sight. In the workplace, that’ll be someone who you find yourself working with a lot for some reason. Conversely, you may have worked with someone for many years at the same workplace, but only remember their face and name. You’ve never had a good conversation with them and you don't really know what kind of person they are.
“Conditions” are a mysterious thing. Because of them, there’s no guarantee you can stay with someone just because you like them, and no guarantee you can leave someone just because you don't like them either. No matter how much you love someone, if there is the condition for you to leave them, you will have to leave them. There are also people who you want to stay away from because they stress you out, but for some reason, they are always around and involved in your life in some way.
A “condition” can be a very fleeting yet irreplaceable thing, while at other times it can be heavy and troublesome. If possible, we all want to live a life in which we are blessed with good conditions and can be grateful for all the conditions we have had.
It was Master Shinran who taught us of the radical transformation of mind that fills our lives with brightness and inspires within us deep gratitude for all the conditions that surround us.
Three points I talk about in this video are :
1. "Animate and inanimate conditions" 2. "Were a husband and a wife enemies a long time ago?" 3. "Shingyobo"
Hope you enjoy the video. Thank you.

Truth
Too often people are convinced that their subjective way of seeing the world is the right one and should be pushed on others. No one holds absolute truth and all good ideas are worth listening to.

Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Bodhisattva
Hey everyone. So today I wanted to talk about Bodhisattvas. To do that, I need to talk about arhatship again. In Theravada Buddhism, the goal of the Buddha’s teachings are to get people to become enlightened, to become arhats, where they no longer feel desire, aversion, or ignorance. However, eventually a tradition comes along in Buddhism claiming to be better than Theravada, the Mahayana Buddhists. These new thinkers thought that individual enlightenment is great and all, but they had a problem with what they saw as the core philosophy. A great illustration I heard in college is that of an apartment building on fire.
Now, imagine that you live in an apartment building and it’s suddenly caught on fire. Most people would want to get out of it. That’s natural. That’s why so many people have religions at all, to escape the suffering of life. The Mahayana Buddhist might go as far as to say that the Theravada Buddhist would try to tell everyone, or at least everyone on the way out, about the fire and make sure they knew to escape but then let them save themselves as they escape as soon as possible. The Mahayana Buddhist would then suggest that a better man would be the person who, after figuring out how to escape, doesn’t do it, but stays inside to ensure that every person can escape, to quite literally save everyone. Heck, with the ideas of samsara in mind, they might actually stick around to save every dog, cat, fish, cockroach, and rat too while they’re at it.
Thus, the idea of the Bodhisattva was born. Sure, find enlightenment, but what you should do is swear to not find nirvana until every living soul finds nirvana first. That’s pretty incredible, not unlike the idea of martyrdom that’s glorified in faiths like Christianity. Thus, Buddhism changed drastically in this denomination. No longer did monks and nuns see themselves as people who sit under trees and meditate, but now they were active in communities, seeing the purpose of their lives as requiring two extra steps on top of the Eightfold Path, trying to do whatever they could for the betterment of all.
Even the idea of reincarnation changed. Now it was not just a system of wanting to go up and not down, or getting it just right at the human level, but an acknowledgment that every reincarnation could land the Bodhisattva anywhere. They could be a monk who has to save a tiger cub from its hungry mother, a wealthy prince who has the power to give anything to anyone, a quail with malformed wings, a warthog who has to deal with the abuse of a monkey, or a monkey who has to deal with the sexual advances of a rock demon, and all are aware of their vows and their purpose. All beings need enlightenment, and so the Bodhisattva goes wherever he is needed. There are so many stories about these figures and I highly recommend finding them out because they are quite cool tales to read and reflect upon.
Anyway, I’d love to learn more about the Bodhisattvas if anyone has more information. I hope that you all are having a good day and staying safe out there.

Upali (Ref) – Buddhsit practice in mountain forests
When Upali, one of Buddha's ten great disciples, asked Buddha's permission to enter the mountain forests to practise,
Buddha said, “Upali, there was an elephant bathing in a large pond. The elephant was washing his body, washing his back, washing his ears, and he was very happy. Seeing this, the rabbit also entered the pond, but his small body became afraid of the water and he jumped out. You are not fit for mountain forest training, O Upali. You should practise among the people." He advised him to do so. - (Samyutta Nikaya 99)
Upali was a barber of Buddha’s birthplace before he was ordained. Thus, he probably had a gregarious personality. It is an incredible pain for such a personality to live a solitary life deep in a mountain forest. Therefore, the Buddha advised Upali to be among the people and to practise.
The Buddha encourages those who are fit to practise in the mountain forests to do so. The Buddha gives guidance appropriate to each person according to his or her personality. That was the Buddha’s way.

If you are still heart broken about the destruction of the Alexandria library, you will be happy to hear in a far away world, there’s a vast library hidden from the world for centuries, contains 84,000 books, which are planned to be digitised, translated and share with the world.
The Sakya Monastery in Tibet, founded in 1073 by Khon Konchog Gyalpo, is renowned for its vast library of ancient manuscripts, many of which remain untouched for centuries.
Most of these texts are Buddhist scriptures, meticulously handwritten in various languages like Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Sanskrit. But the depth of this collection is vast. It isn’t limited to religious teachings; it expands into the realms of literature, history, philosophy, the stars above with astronomy, the logic of mathematics, the beauty of art, and even the practical wisdom of agriculture.
The scale of this library is staggering. Picture traditional bookshelves stretching 200 feet and soaring to 33 feet, all packed with a whopping 84,000 books! Among these, there’s a standout: a single scripture that tips the scales at a massive 1,100 pounds, claiming the title of the heaviest in the world. Thanks to the region’s dry climate, the library also boasts a collection of delicate palm-leaf manuscripts, preserved in near-perfect condition.
The library is not open to the general public but is accessible to members and visiting scholars with permission. Efforts are underway to digitize these manuscripts, making them more widely available for research and study. This initiative highlights the library's role as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern scholarship, offering invaluable insights into Tibetan culture and knowledge.
Now, these precious papers give us a peek into Tibet’s history. They show us how people lived, what they believed, and how they dreamed. Thanks to the Sakya Monastery, a whole world has been brought back to life from long ago. Everyone can learn and be amazed by the wonders of the past.
