Congratulations to Wei Wuxian for beating the world champion of Compulsory Heterosexuality: Shen Yuan's record in the 100m Denial dash. He wins nothing, he is in fact a massive loser, but it's impressive nonetheless.

Youth Playing the Pipes of Pan
Artist: Bertold Löffler (Austrian, 1874–1960)
Date: 1912
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY, United States
Description
This, Löffler’s most important painting, reveals his passion for classicism, from the garlanded youth and draped female attendants to the vase at their feet, depicting Pan, the Greek god of untamed nature. The bold patterns on the women’s cloaks reflect Löffler’s work as a designer for the cutting-edge Austrian artists’ association the Wiener Werkstätte. Eduard Ast, a major patron of the group, acquired this canvas for his villa in Vienna, built by the visionary architect Josef Hoffmann.

ROUND 1A, MATCH 1 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Causes of Death & Propaganda Under the Cut:
Jiang Yanli
Cause of Death: Stabbed; Self-sacrifice to save her brother.
Propaganda:
she's your pfp that's got to count for something
I love JYL don't get me wrong! But also. She is solely written as a part of the male characters and does not get much in her own right. She is Wei Wuxian's older sect sister, or Jiang Cheng's sister, or Jin Zixuan's fiance/wife, or Jin Ling's mother he never got to know. Even what characterization people give her (like liking soup/cooking or standing up for her family despite being gentle) are things that have to do with her brothers. I wish we got more of her in her own right.
AND ALSO. ALSO??? HER DEATH MAKES. NO SENSE. Okay first of all - she was in Lanling grieving for her very recently dead husband & taking care of her newborn baby. Who would let that woman out of Lanling????? WHY???? How did she get out of there SO FAST????? She doesn't have a sword/isn't a cultivator (at least in MDZS) so she couldn't have flown. And then after she got there WHO LET HER JUST OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BATTLEFIELD???? WHY DID SHE GO THERE???? Even if there was a short part of her saying "I need to talk to Wei Wuxian about how he killed my husband and I'm going to get there no matter what" would've clarified things a little bc it's like okay she needs to go there even if we don't know how. Where are my answers MXTX, where are my answers????
Qin Su
Cause of Death: Suicide; Stabbed herself with a knife. (NOTE: In some versions of the story, she was being controlled and thus forced to kill herself.
Propaganda:
I'm fairly certain this character was only created as set dressing for the main villain's tragedy. We get zero insight into her inner life, zero hints that any such inner life might even exist, and after she dies basically no other named character other than the aforementioned villain is shown to be majorly affected by her death, even those who logically should have meaningful relationships with her.
Compared to the other two main female characters in this series (who are also fridged) Jiang Yanli and Wen Qing, Qin Su is probably the least aggravating because she's barely in the show and has very little character that we see. But I still think it's worth noting. I really wish that she could've survived and been there in Guanyin Temple IT COULD'VE BEEN COOL OKAY.
Wen Qing
Cause of Death: Executed; Burned to ashes.
Propaganda:
The fact that Wen Qing is the character that originally said the thing about "I'm sorry" and "Thank you", which is repeated multiple times in the post-resurrection parts of the series, but is so rarely mentioned by name is so aggravating! She's such an important part of the plot that did SO MANY THINGS but just basically disappears after her death!!! The only time I really remember her being mentioned is when her brother, Wen Ning, mentions her integral role in the golden core reveal. Jiang Yanli's ghost haunts the series after her death, but Wen Qing's really doesn't, and that's so fucked up to me. She even dies during the same time that Wen Ning does, but then it's revealed he survived (well, "survived", he is a zombie, but he was that beforehand too) SO WHY COULDN'T SHE HAVE SURVIVED TOO????

I just [clenches fist] I love how much Madam Jin loves Jiang Yanli. Yanli is not an accomplished cultivator like her. She has average looks. The only notable things about her are her kindness and her cooking abilities. But Madam Jin adores her! Genuinely loves her! And I love it!

Pickpocket My Heart
by The_Hourglass_Muse
T, 1k, A-Qing/Ouyang Zichen
Part of the Women of MDZS Flash Exchange
Summary: A-Qing pickpockets Ouyang Zizhen, and he falls in love at first sight. The Juniors TRY to help him win her over. It does not start out well… Or 4 times A-Qing pickpockets Ouyang Zizhen, and 1 time Ouyang Zizhen receives something in return. Based on the prompt to write something silly or fun involving A-Qing. Kay's comments: A pairing I tend to overlook and still enjoy, so I was really delighted by this story. It was cute, it was funny, and it gave A-Qing a much better ending than canon. Her and Ouyang Zichen's flirting is incredibly charming. They have a single brain cell between the two of them and it struggles to connect the dots. Excerpt: “Did she seem to like the flowers?” Ouyang Zizhen anxiously asked. “In a way she did… She kind of ate them…” Lan Jingyi replied. Ouyang Zizhen looked crestfallen. “Maybe she thought you’re just the sort of person who carries flowers around and didn’t know you picked them for her?” Lan Sizhui speculated. “She was probably getting rid of the evidence of the theft,” Jin Ling retorted. “Or maybe she was really hungry?” Lan Jingyi said hopefully.
pov a-qing, pov ouyang zichen, canon divergence, a-qing lives, adorable juniors, a-qing/ouyang zichen, fluff, fluff and humor, short & sweet, silly, junior quartet dynamics, no angst, junior ensemble shenanigans

Thebes! I would like to know about Untamed Dajie if you're willing!
“So!” Nie Huaisang had seen Xichen-ge fly off as he was feeding the birds from his bedroom window, and had rushed straight to find his sister. “Have you finally managed to set a date for the wedding? Because you’re in the running for world’s longest engagement at this point, and I really… dajie?”
Nie Mingjue is staring straight at the table, at two barely touched cups of tea.
“There isn’t going to be a wedding, a-Sang.” Her voice is dull and emotionless, so far from the sister he knows.
Nie Huaisang clenches his fist. “That bastard. He called it off? I’ll ruin him, I’ll ruin the whole Lan sect for good measure, he can’t treat you like-”
“You won’t touch him, Nie Huaisang.” Dajie never full names him unless she really means it. But if the wedding, after a decade-long engagement, has been called off, and dajie doesn’t blame Lan Xichen…
He moves a few paces closer to the table. “Dajie…”
Dajie is crying. Dajie never cries.
“Why aren’t you crying dajie? Don’t you miss him!”
“If they see me cry the elders will say I’m too weak to lead. They’ll appoint someone else as acting sect leader and they’ll never give it back. How can I honour fuqin then?”
He kneels at her side, pulling a handkerchief out of his sleeve. She takes it, without a word.
“Dajie… what happened? You’ve been looking forward to this for so long.”
“I called it off. It will be better if I can stay with you, to be your advisor. I can’t ask him to wait any longer.” Her voice is steady, bland. It feels almost rehearsed.
“Did Xichen-ge- did Zewu-jun believe that, when you told him?”
Nie Mingjue laughs, hollow and humourless. “Of course not. But he is honourable enough not to push.”
“Dajie, I don’t… you could have been so happy. You love him.” It’s a statement that has never been in question. Nie Huaisang doesn’t remember a time when his dajie wasn’t in love with Xichen-ge, and him with her. It wasn’t so much an arranged marriage, to Nie Huiasang’s understanding, as the pair being introduced at a young age in the hopes that they would get on well.
The plan had paid off. They had gotten engaged young, with the intention of waiting until Lan Xichen had reached his majority and taken his rightful place as Lan-zongzhu. And then fuqin died, and the decision was made to allow Nie Mingjue to be acting sect leader until Nie Huaisang came of age. And now Nie Huaisang is twenty one and about to take on the role he was born for, the role he never wanted, but at least his dajie could finally be happy.
“I do.”
“Then why?”
Dajie is silent. He watches as she swallows, dryly. She buries her hands in her lap, takes a deep, shuddering breath. “I’m dying, a-Sang.”

10 (More) Favorite Female Characters
Thank you @ankahikoibaat. To go with the supporting women’s wrongs theme…
• Madame Yu (The Untamed): Where she falls on the morality scale is strongly contested but she certainly twists my brain into moral knots (in a good way). You can't say she doesn't care though, even about Wei Wuxian who’s threatened hand-dismemberment is her breaking point. She’s also such a badass and I love how she went out with such a bang (while her husband went out with a whimper). • A’Yark (Kenobi the Book): Honestly both the leading ladies of this book could tell the story all by themselves, Kenobi’s PoV especially is almost inconsequential despite being the titular character. Of the two I find A’Yark PoV and her struggles more captivating, despite the author’s idea that ‘the hard desert breeds hard people’ *sigh* she still shines. Haven’t finished the book yet so I can’t say more about her. • Jane Roland (Temeraire) she a badass dragon-riding, sword-swinging Captain (later Admiral) who makes 1800s generals gasp like scandalized victorian-era ladies! Just the way she likes too. But she’s of high rank in the British military force in the 1800s and has the kind of ruthless outlook you’d expect for the position and times. (even if Europe found dragon world countries a might harder to conquer) • Wu Zetian (Iron Widow): started out swearing vengeance for her sister, succeeds beyond all expectations (especially her own) and has to survive (and survive with) the consequences of her own actions. Finished by stomping the patriarchy with a giant robot dragon mech (why is this women’s wrongs?). Now THIS is what I wanted of the 90’s grimdark antiheroes and several things I hadn't known I wanted! • Yzma (Emperor’s New Groove) Everyone loves Kronk but not enough people give Yzma the credit for being the perfect villain in this classic. She’s evil without being apologetic or glorifying in it. She breaks so many evil woman cliches without even trying I love it. She and Kronk are the perfect comedic duo. This movie just wouldn’t shine without her giving it some evil homebrew polish! • Harley Quinn (Batman): She’s just to interesting! Hyper-competent sidekick who’s got a thing with Joker and Poison Ivy. She chose to help Arkham inmates for selfish reasons. Chose evil out of love. She’s done her damnest to finish that redemption arc. She came closest to killing Batman in the animated series but holds no grudge against him (unlike most). There’s just so much depth of character to her! • Lena Dupree & Simone Lenoir (Scooby Doo on Zombie Island) – okay two in one but they’re fantastic villains! Sob story and earned their evilness. They’re legit threatening and also the only time I’ve seen women transform into a feline and its actually shown as monstrous and not sexy. Like I can see what the monsterfuckers see in them…but you gotta be a monsterfucker to want to. • Romsca (Redwall) This was my favorite series as a kid and I only had two problems with it back then: 1) no sword-wielding female warriors and 2) always chaotic evil people trope. Romsca is THE BEST aversion to both! Badass braggart pirate captain who went through a redemption arc. Sadly died instead of like stealing Martin’s sword and living to be the champion of the high seas but cest la vie. • Daenerys (A Song of Ice and Fire): I like that she’s in-universe a black horse in the Game of Thrones. No one expects her to be a threat until she knocks on their door with dragons. Most of all though I appreciate that she breaks the stereotype of ‘heir to the throne returns’ (even if the show could’ve done a much better job, y’know, SHOWING that). She’s a conqueror, not a savior
No pressure tag @charmwasjess, @panther-os, @s-c-g-s-c-g, @beskad, @bolithesenate, @shinobicyrus, @amarcia, @dragonciphering, @gallusrostromegalus, @la-sopa

“Poor Things was gross and exploiting and had misogynistic themes and therefore was not femininely empowering.”
Sometimes themes of misogyny have to exist in media for a female character to rise above them. Although the film can be viewed as raunchy, the sex scenes were actually meaningful to the plot as this story was about her journey of self-exploration, a large part of that being her sexuality and unabashedly fulfilling her desires, as she dismissed and argued against male expectations when they did not suit her. In addition, this film perfectly depicted the way men will attempt to groom innocence and shame girls and women who do not conform to their standards. If you were unable to digest this film for what it truly was, you likely have a very shallow level of media comprehension in this essay I will

Cause of Death: Accident; Fell down the stairs
Propaganda:
she's a sword fighter! she wanted to be the best sword fighter in the world and was until she died the best in her class. while practicing with zoro she was giving him tips on how to improve (even before they become friends). she has a really cool sword (which zoro takes after she dies to "carry on her legacy" or something). we dont know anything else about her :)))))))))
Listen Oda normally writes the women characters well but this... this was not it. Other than giving Zoro motivation she doesn't really have much of a role in the main story and idk she could've had a more "honorable" death or something
