Day 10: Found in the bowels of our housemates' cellar. An 18 year old sparkling Shiraz, from the Coonawarra region of South Australia, produced by Peter Rumball Wines. I'm not a fan of red sparklings, yet it is an obiqitous staple found in the Australian wine identity and one I have to embrace. And yet, upon tasting this wine, we was pleasantly surprised by this aged sparkling, and let me tell you, both my housemate and I was suspicious and had a backups in the wings. Yes, it shows heaps of tertiary character; port and nuttiness in spades. The palate equally so and with a fine mousse for a surprising elegance. The tannins are so integrated, they seemlessly blend with the flavours adding to the rich texture. What a wonderful find and wine to have at the end of my first day of my new job. “Um branco australiano com 11 anos de idade... será que ainda está vivo?” — foi o que pensei enquanto servia uma taça deste “Brokenwood Sémillon 2008” da @BrokenwoodWines. . Um vinho elaborado com 100% Sémillon proveniente do Hunter Valley, no sudeste da Austrália, sem passagem por carvalho e sem sofrer fermentação malolática. . A screwcap (tampa de rosca), muito comum nos vinhos australianos, certamente ajudou na conservação deste vinho e não permitiu sua oxidação. . Na taça, cor amarelo-palha clara com reflexos citrinos. Aromas cítricos (limão) e herbáceos (grama cortada e erva-cidreira). Na boca é seco, cítrico e com um toque de salinidade. Tem corpo médio- e acidez média+, um discreto amargor e curta persistência. . Um vinho equilibrado, e fácil de beber (ainda mais no calor), mas que não me empolgou. Achei que faltou complexidade e, talvez pela idade, um pouco mais de frescor. Um bom vinho, provavelmente melhor se fosse uns 3-4 anos mais novo... Mas ganha 88 pontos. . Jansz Tasmania Premiun Sparkling Rosé NV. In the glass, clear, pale salmon, with fine bubbles. On the nose, light cherry, a trace of orange, lemon zest. First taste: off-dry, high acidity, low alcohol; light bodied. Lemon, some wild strawberry, some creaminess. The aromas are not pronounced. Medium finish. This is an acceptable wine to be drunk right away. It's quite vibrant. It's refreshing and light, and it would be a good companion for a sultry summer afternoon like the one outside my window right now. (NB: I'm staying in the air conditioning.) I recommend it with whatever fatty appetizers you have on hand, anything from potato chips to prosciutto. Name: 2009 Clarendon Hills Syrah Liandra Vineyard _________ My rating: 93+ _________ My Price: $35 from @wtso , best available now $74 online. _________ An unexpected surprise. Love Clarendon Hills, but this was particularly good. Complex nose of dark berries, smoked meats and gravel. On the palate this was all lush ripe dark berries and black plum on the front end. However, the mid palate is just starting to show its potential, with some tertiary complexity of licorice, chocolate and white pepper. The finish lingera with tobacco, savory cured meats, and a distinct saline note. This is in the beginning of its drinking window and will only get better in my humble opinion. What’s better than sharing your wines with a Master Sommelier? When he shares one of his cellar wines with you, of course! And the restaurant has no wine glasses so you drink out of a plastic water cup. Another great lunch with @evangoldsteinms and he brought this great bottle - a 2016 Australian gem from McLaren Vale region. A skin-contact blend of Semillon and Viognier. A very full-bodied white, amazing texture and exploding with fruit but also zippy acid. Jim Barry 2019 Lodge Hill Riesling, Clare Valley. Pale lemon in the glass, quite delicate in appearance. On the nose is a burst of petrol, almost entirely--quite pronounced. Light lemon trails afterward. First sip is high acidity, almost a burn. Light bodied, off-dry sweetness, low alcohol, with peach and lime as primary flavors and blossom as secondary. Acceptable balance and complexity, good intensity of flavors, short finish. This one's a little raw, tbh, but it's still enjoyable.
