"...and as they say during a dark, stormy night...SHAZAM!"
"A-Ning! Did you let Wei Wuxian drink from the blood pool again!?"

"This place is called the Burial Mounds. The hatred is intense, isn't it? And the resentment too? When a living person enters this place, there's no coming back-- for the body or the soul. They can forget about ever escaping. Wei Wuxian, you, too, can forget about ever escaping."

Can yall imagine yourself being wen ning marching towards your death (this time willingly) with your sister's hand in your own, all to protect the people you love?
Watching them burn her to death and hearing that its meaningless and that they still plan to continue and kill everyone, you attempt to break out and rush back, but its not possible, and you're confined before long.
It isnt until time passes and in your confinement you hear of how the people you loved and would give everything to protect have all been killed and its through the guards holding you captive jeering and laughing and that the world is celebrating their deaths.
And you can't even weep because your eyes can't cry
They're all dead. What was it for? What was her death for?! What had his A-Jie been burned to death for?
Little A-Yuan,
Granny Wen,
Uncle Four... everyone is dead.
Young Master Wei....Wei Wuxian, the last sight you remember is him lying there helplessly calling for you to not go and you wish you had listened.
You can only greive now. The only thing you can do is scream, and its not enough.
Then they begin experimenting on you, and no one knows you're kept down here, locked away, all alone with people who don't consider you human.
Then you lose your free will, your thoughts and consciousness, until 13 years later.
13 Years Later, you hear a familiar melody calling for you and a seed of hope grows in your chest

I’m so curious if during Wei Wuxian’s Yiling Patriarch era the people of Yiling could recognize him.
We know he went into town and was treated pretty normally. It could be that people didn’t know who he was, or they knew did and didn’t care, either of which would be incredibly funny:
Yiling citizen: Oh look there’s the radish guy! He’s quite nice, always sweet to the kids and his radishes are surprisingly good!
Visiting cultivator: that’s the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian
Yiling Citizen:
What
—————
Person who’s not from Yiling: I don’t know how you live here, I’d be terrified the Yiling Patriarch would come and kill me!
Person from Yiling: I saw Wei Wuxian trip over his robes, fall flat on his face, and just lie there while his child poked him

Of all the (many, heartwrenching) animatics I've seen of mdzs, there's three that I keep coming back to that are just so... Ooh. And each of them tells a different perspective of the first seige of the burial mounds - one for each survivor. Like a little trilogy.
youtube
Just close your eyes The sun is going down You'll be alright No one will hurt you now
youtube
Fear will be your enemy And death its consequence That what they once said to me And it's starting to make sense
youtube
Don't care if he's guilty Don't care if he's not He's good and he's bad And he's all that I've got
The first and last are by the same artist, which does a lot to tie them together XD. And the middle one is more cql what with the cave temple, and has a bit of a different vibe (I'm like 90% certain the music is from a Frozen musical) but it still fits and is also Really Good (there's some computer background worthy frames).
I was about to recommend a couple more animatics here but genuinely I'd be listing every one and there's so many. Search it up on youtube and cry like the rest of us.
(But if anyone knows the one where lwj hitchhikes to the burial mounds on a cart I'd muchly appreciate it ToT.)

i will always love and appreciate the irony and parallel of how in the first siege, the cultivators mass-attacked the burial mounds and destroyed everything, using wei wuxian’s cave to hide the aftermath of their brutality and in the second siege, it is exactly that cave which shelters the cultivators and infact, saves them from the fate they had once dished upon the wens without thought or mercy. it is how the place they had collectively condemned and looked down upon is precisely the place that keeps them alive when their circumstances finally turn on them. it’s the way that it is the home that had once occupied wei wuxian–the enemy of the cultivation world–that becomes their salvation in the end.
also, i don’t completely remember this but the array that protects them was missing bits that lan qiren helps remake and the thought that the reason the array was broken in the first place was because it was barged into by the cultivators during the first siege, whilst the remaining wens were inside it, a last ditch effort to save themselves, breaks my fucking heart. because the cultivators of the second siege were saved by the very tools that wei wuxian CREATED to help and protect and secure the wen remnants, the very people that these cultivators and their predecessors killed in cold blood.

ART IN NOTES/REBLOGS NOW!!!!
Tgcf/MDZS crossover au where after loosing his core WWX technically counts as dead and is able to cultivate the same way a ghost can, essentially making him a ghost possessing a very compatible body.
He’s not a demonic cultivator, he’s just a ghost.
Additionally, the burial mounds are actually the semi-active “remains” of mount tonglu, so when he dies there he’s essentially thrown straight into the kiln, and the only reason WWX is able to get out within 8 years is bc he spent 4 years there as a child, and an additional 2 with the Wen remnants.
Accidental Ghost King Acquisition.
WWX spends the next 3 years in Yiling fucking around with his ghost Wens, rescues Wen Ning with help from Wen Qing, helping the small town in Yiling, and generally being the insane genius inventor he always should have been.
He makes silver bells and enchanted ornaments for Yiling’s people deals with rogue ghosts, befriends his shishu Xiao Xingchen, helps spirits move on. Silver Song Guiding Graves becomes a very welcome guardian for Yiling.
Xie Lian, concerned about the supposed new ghost king, is assigned to find it. Thus leads Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meeting Wei Ying.
Eventually, Mo Xuanyu tries to summon the Yiling Patriarch in exchange for his own soul, but.. he just gets Wei Ying hunched over on the ground with noodles coming out of his mouth. He was having dinner with his friends when he got summoned by this twink okay?
He basically becomes Mo Xuanyu’s Bodyguard for the next 9 months cause he sees Xuanyu as pathetic but in like a wet cat sort of way, as he, Lan Zhan, Xuanyu, and a group of 15 year olds get together to solve a murder.

Flower Empowered.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#lan wangji#wei wuxian#lan wunian#The absolute chaos that ensued when Lan Wangji showed up...those girls went wild.#We have to give kudos to narration that takes the form of a bunch of suitor seeking ladies.#They were so loud about being here for the hotties and whispering gossip. You go girls.#Wei Wuxian most likely just picked up a already tossed flower to throw. Second hand flowers...are still flowers I suppose.#Can you imagine if LWJ had allergies? Poor lad.#Okay it's time for the real gritty discussion point. The one everyone is waiting for me to talk about:#So...from where we are in the timeline...what the hell is WWX supposed to be wearing?#I'm serious. Put all the fanart out of your brain for a moment.#We are post burial grounds and sunshot campaign so he's had his little goth moment reveal.#*BUT* he is still with the Jiang sect. And by proxy of this flashback talking about his disrespect - they never bring up his attire.#meaning he is likely in some kind of Jiang Purple.#Continuity wise it really feels like this scene should have been *before* the burial mounds.#I understand why it's post - we need to build up on the mystery of how he became the YLLZ.#But also his personality feels way more 'pre-burial mounds WWX'. I think this was probably a 'I don't want to kill my darling' scene.#(The Phoenix mountain flashback is a lot of people's 'darling'. I am knowingly putting myself in the line of fire here).#I'm willingly putting him in Wen Qing's borrowed cloak and assuming people take him wearing it as like...a war trophy.#Historians will revise this moment later on but for now he *is* a hero of that war.

Looked so alive, turns out i'm not real
by KatAnni
M, 36k, Wangxian
Part of the MDZS Big Bang 2024
Summary: "Nothing leaves the Burial Mounds alive." Lan Wangji goes on a side mission night hunt with Wei Wuxian during the Sunshot Campaign, and finds out just how true that statement is. Inquiry rings through the room, and Wei Wuxian answers. This of course, has consequences. For the MDZS Big Bang 2024, Collab with Sweetlittlevampire Kay's comments: This story was meant for WIP Rec Week but it posted quicker than I was able to rec it! But it had me aboslutely hooked from the first chapter. Stunning writing and art! A story in which Wei Wuxian maybe doesn't really return from the Burial Mounds alive and Lan Wangji finds out during the Sunshot Campaign and I'm so hyped. Had some really strong cliffhangers in this story and the built-up to the happy ending was devastating. Featuring beautiful art by @sweetlittlevampire Excerpt: As if his strings were cut, Wei Ying crumbled to the ground, his head meeting the floor with a sickening sound, and Lan Wangji was on his feet immediately, Wangji clattering to the ground with a dissonant sound. “Wei Ying!” He sat next to the prone form, his hand shakily reaching for a shoulder, the other a wrist. So still. Not moving. No pulse. “Lan Zhan?” His voice was groggy, as if from far away. Lan Wangji was still holding his wrist, and tried to still his own heartbeat at the lack of one from Wei Ying. “What- Hey!” Wei Ying was on his feet within the next second, his hand withdrawn, and Lan Wangji stared up at him. “What did you do?!” His voice was suddenly sharp, accusing, unforgiving. The flute, that cursed black flute, was in his hands, pointed at Lan Wangji like a knife. Lan Wangji stared, unblinking, as realization seemed to dawn on Wei Ying, as his brows drew together. “You made me say that, with that song! How- Why-”
pov lan wangji, canon divergence, temporary character death, sunshot campaign, major character death, sentient burial mounds, hurt wei wuxian, hurt lan wangji, not actually unrequited love, wei wuxian's three months in the burial mounds, fix-it, somebody lives/not everybody dies
