Travel Log & Ledger of Tristan Klein

Date: Oct. 14, 1733

Jamestown was a bust. Community of blockheads with no sense of vision.

Arrived in village of Brandenburg, est. pop. 300. Hoped to find it more amenable to my wares, but so far the townsfolk seem guarded and, at times, hostile. Little wonder - bad timing. It seems a murder took place in the early hours, a young boy. A dreadful sight, to be sure, but nothing in the town's response to the tragedy adds up to sense.

In fact, I worry I've traveled into a den of lunatics.

To wit:

Several other strangers to town arrived with me today. A shipwright sorely lacking in a sense of personal skills, a wildman trapper with a face like the backside of an ass, and Mr. Fancypants the Hessian soldier-for-hire who, from what I gathered eavesdropping, is here to deliver a package to the richest family in town. None of his story makes sense to me, but I haven't had a chance to press him for details.

Despite the boy's death being a spectacle drawing most of the town to see, his family in hysterics, the body was cleared away most unceremoniously and the task of burial fell to OUR hands. What sort of family buries a child in unconsecrated ground, with no funeral, and trusts the deed to a group of strangers? Once more, none of this makes any sense. The only local to aid us in this was a simple farm boy.

Strange things have been happening to my senses since arrival, as well. Apparitions of a most unpleasant nature, whispers in the tavern from no clear origin. A bible burst to flames in my hand and restored itself when I tried to show the evidence. At first, I worried some ergot had poisoned the ale, but I fear it's much worse than that -- for the others have seen the same things. Five men may all be driven to hallucinate at once, but not the *same* ghastly visions.

Most damning of all, I encountered a blacksmith who insisted that a demon arrived this very morning to their small town. When pressed for details, he was a most unhelpful and suspicious source, but I am convinced he was dead serious in his assertion.

One of my companions (to use the term generously) encountered a woman in the woods and though he prattled on quite nonsensically, one thing was evident: this murder is not the only instance of such an evil in this town's history, whatever the other locals may claim.

I made just one pleasant acquaintance in an otherwise very long and exhausting day, although I worry his friendship may not ingratiate me with the townsfolk. No matter. I don't think I want to stay long enough to make further friends.

The blacksmith warned against trying to pass the woods at night, so I am stuck here at least until morning light. My plan is to leave at dawn and put this cursed place and its devilry behind me.

See now this fucks. 

It’s a bit of a treat to get a cover like this that’s so BEAUTIFUL and DELICATE and actually include characters not directly involved in the plot anymore. It’s like BONUS ART: Fai and Kamui in a tender and deadly gothic vampire embrace for no particular reason :D 

And we LOVE to see it!

I love the fragile looking archway behind them. It looks very Art Nouveau (I say, guessing. Please correct me) and the pose between Fai and Kamui could EASILY be on a romance novel. And in fact it SHOULD be!

We get some stunning visual contrasts, like the dark sweep of Kamui’s cape looking demonic in nature, like bat wings - which, like, vampire - but the thin white arch behind him ALSO spreads out behind him like it could be wings. Or even better, it forms more of a halo - a complete circle above his head in thin white lines. The contrast in the angelic and the demonic really speak to his role in the narrative a couple of times over; he protected Acid Tokyo but purely out of self interest; he's a dick to everyone, which is frowned upon, but he does it to protect Subaru, which is understandable; he killed Syaoran but he saved Fai; even the act of saving Fai was technically a bad thing, turning him into a vampire, but it was the only way he would stay alive, which was what we wanted! 

That contrast continues into Fai’s pose here as well. He’s within the circle of Kamui’s arms, which is traditionally a place of affection or protection, but here it’s almost predatory with Fai as the prey. There's a clear indication of danger laced throughout every inch of it. Kamui’s nails stretch out in front of Fai in a way that COULD be protective, but also form a cage he will never be able to escape from, and the nail of his index finger trails SO CLOSE to Fai’s throat it could kill him with a slight twitch. The nails of his left hand also trail across the wing of his coat, becoming the traditional veins that you would see in bat wings and completing the metaphor of the monstrous. Fai, too, plays with this dichotomy - his head is tilted upwards towards Kamui, neck exposed, in a pose natural for a lover, or for someone giving access to their neck, like the vampire’s victim he is. The clear shadow across his neck (The ONLY shadow in the cover) shows just how close he is to harm, indicates the exact danger this pose puts him in, and yet we can also see him clutching at Kamui’s arm - not hard but gently, coaxing, guiding. Then again the closer I look I think the line of Kamui’s arm is actually a little bit further to the left, which might indicate that Fai is actually holding his waist, which is even more intimate again. 

All in all it’s FANTASTIC, it’s GORGEOUS, I want this as a gothic creepy tapestry I hang in a castle somewhere while lightning strikes somewhere in the distance.

Oh and the splash text, where is that.

Which slams home the theme on BOTH of these two - how much of their own intended fate they sacrifice for the people they choose to devote themselves to. But, when combined with the art, just how much this devotion and protection can actually add it's own inherent form of danger, even if they aren't aware. Kamui's protectiveness of Subaru is HARDLY balanced after all, and Fai's devotion to Sakura leads his curse to killing her. Then again, you could easily say the same thing for Sakura, who chose to put herself INTO that danger DELIBERATELY to save the people she cared for.

And so the complicated feelings and consequences that come from "protecting" someone continue to swirl around in the moral grey.

Finally onto the brand new 6th Cat’s Eye Chronicles book after doing a full series reread and this is…not what I expected. Ig I shouldn’t be surprised that even 6 years (and books) on Crash & Sora are still doing a “will they won’t they” “this will never work out clearly they don’t have feelings for me & I can’t love them even though they consume my every waking thought” but I am genuinely disappointed that a love triangle appeared, now, in book 6, after how much I praised this series for never doing a love triangle during Peak YA Love Triangle Ubiquity when I was a teenager.*

*(Caprion was never for a moment a love triangle option Shreffler just needs us all to know that every significant male character in these books is Tall, Gorgeous, and Rippling With Muscle because would it even be a fantasy romance otherwise. Sora was the eyes telling us how gorgeous Caprion was but c’mon his only romantic option was always Moss/Krait and he and Sora didn’t have a single romantic moment together for all Caprion and Crash didn’t get along bc of fantasy world racism between the Harpies and Nameless)

Also the sudden demon a/b/o dynamics energy with all of the Sixth Race being able to see that Crash dicked Sora down two years ago and referring to her as his mate when that was never a thing unless you count him telling her once, immediately before the aforementioned sex, that afterwords she would “always be his”. And his weird possessiveness without the sentimentality. He’s always been quiet, and they’ve been apart for two years, but they were only ever more physically intimate after moments of increased emotional intimacy. The intermittent physical heat between them without them breaking communications back open just feels wrong. The idea of Crash’s demon marking her somehow so she’s inherently more…susceptible to him (very a/b/o energy), without her knowing about it, when previously she was in control of whenever their relationship progressed physically also feels wrong and almost certainly will lead to a big fallout between them. Where would their relationship be without the misunderstanding->fight->make up pattern, I suppose. But he’s just Not Talking to her again. How many times have we relearned this exact lesson now, Crash? Every single book so far? Yeah okay.

Also not so much a fan of Sora suddenly constantly collapsing from this magic sickness in her cat’s eye; yes she’s always been a Mary Sue character but she kicked so much ass in books 4 and 5 and this simpering waif collapsing alternately into the arms of Crash or Gracen thing is so much worse. Like she got in the one ass-kicking of Nameless savants and then immediately got spelled, what happened to her cat’s eye protecting her from all magic including the Dark God’s plague this just feels like…a different canon than the previous series. The six year time gap from the publication of book 5 doesn’t help I’m sure, but what the hell.

Plus didn’t Caprion destroy a full-blooded demon in the novella? But now the big “series finale” sacrifice in book 5 just destroyed Cerastes’ mortal body but not his demon?? When everyone stressed so much that the whole reason for a Seraph existing was to destroy demons by sacrificing themselves in a blaze of extremely powerful light? What is the point of killing the mortal vessel if the demon survives anyway?? And is more powerful outside of a body? And apparently more powerful than a Cat’s Eye which previously was simply Not A Thing?

At this point I have to finish it, and I see that there’s supposed to be a 7th book which I assume means that Sora and Crash are not going to smooth out their relationship before the end of this one, but honestly if Sora ends up with Gracen after 6 whole books of this painfully slow slowburn with Crash I’ll be more disappointed than when book 5 ended with them going off to pursue their separate goals with the implication that they’d end up together later after some time to mature on their own, because that just made sense after the tumultuous relationship they’d established. But honestly both of them had emotionally matured so much by book 5 that this 6th book feels like backwards progress. Like this book legit does the exact thing Drew Gooden just called out in his recent Star Wars video, it legit gives Sora PTSD so her character has regressed & needs to redo the development she already had, while also making her physically ill so she’s back to being just as useless as she was in Book 1 before her entire development of becoming strong enough to feel confident in her skills and herself & to meet and converse with Crash as an equal…where is the Sora that impressed Crash with her understanding that he needed time to go back to The Hive and confront his past to truly move forward but trusted him to come back to her, like I’m tired.

btw you should play xenoblade chronicles x: definitive edition when it comes out on switch and here's why:

-absolutely beautiful open world JRPG made by the studio that went on to work on BotW and TotK's maps. you want fantastical natural settings? we got em in spades.

-instead of being a JRPG that starts as a fantasy story and gets more scifi as it goes on it starts as a scifi story and gets more fantasy as it goes on. all xenoblade games are firmly science fantasy but X tips the closest to the science side of the scale

-super cool aliens. aliens that were genetically engineered to eat pollution. high tech aliens that love pizza. aliens that are allergic to human dna. straight up thundercats.

-Mix-and-match combat where you custom build your own class based on which sword and gun choice you have equipped. From a regular ass knife to a lightsaber, from an assault rifle to a laser drone.

-There's a character named "Murderess."

-You get a mech. You get lots of mechs. They transform into vehicles and can fly. Anything you want out of a mech, this mech can do it.

-There is a field boss named "Sheldon the Dentally Challenged"

-If you have a favorite English voice actor, they are in this game, I can almost guarantee it.

-Side quests. Great side quests. Excellent side quests. Open world JRPG with excellent side quests. Need I repeat.

-OST by Hiroyuki Sawano. You might recognize him from the soundtrack of some obscure anime such as Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, and Gundam.

      “Daddy, honey has that weird look again.” Aaron can’t help but smile at his little boy, putting the files he was working on down on his desk, telling him to come closer with his hands. Jack had gotten into the habit of calling you honey very early on in your relationship, that being one of the pet names Aaron used the most when talking to you. It was too endearing to correct him, even after you moved in. You both just let the boy be, knowing that he would call you by name once he got older.

      You didn’t mind him not calling you mom or any of its variants, even if the relationship you shared now was much alike mother and child, Jack didn’t remember a lot of Haley by himself, he was too little, but Aaron always did his best to keep her memory alive in him, so if for his young mind it was easier to call you a pet name, you would take it every single time with a smile. And so would Aaron. 

      “What look, buddy?” He asks even though he’s sure he knows the answer, having been through that a few times over the last two years. 

      “She’s staring at my stuff and sitting on the floor.” Bingo. Every once in a while you would get obsessed with something, it made sense after you were diagnosed with ADHD and he learnt how to accommodate you properly, but for a while it was just a big clash of his organized and controlling nature and your chaotic mind. 

      “Let’s see what she needs, okay?” Jack nods, leading the way with his dad closely behind. They find you exactly as his boy explained to him, sitting with your legs crossed on the floor, staring at his wardrobe so attentively it might scare the unknown eye. 

      “Darling? What’s going on?” He asks without entering the room, not wanting to invade your space before you called him in, instead he decided to lean on the door frame, observing you with his kind eyes.

      “I want to rearrange all of Jack’s clothes but we need more hangers for that and I don’t want to go to the store just to buy hangers, but I also can’t get up to go to the kitchen and check what else we need.” You answered quickly, finishing your ramble with a huff, dropping your shoulders and looking at your fiancé with a pout that made him get closer to you, offering his hands so you could have some support while getting up, you lazily do it, being embraced by him as soon as your feet touch the ground. 

      “Go watch something with Jack, okay?” His tone is always soft, as if your conversations, even the silliest and mundane ones, were secrets for you two to keep. He knew you too well, so he prevented the whine he knew would come–you wanted to get this done, you needed to rearrange Jack’s clothes or the itch in your brain wouldn’t leave–and he did so by holding both of your cheeks with his hands, making you look at him. “I’ll make the shopping list and then you both can go to Target while I get some reports done.” You nod happily, his hands moving with your head. 

      Telling you to watch something with Jack could seem like a mindless choice of words, but it wasn’t, Aaron knew you were feeling stuck and how bad that made you feel, you needed a dopamine kick before you could do something, and no better way for that than colorful silly shows with your favorite boy.

      By the time he’s done with the shopping list, you had already started another important project: Napping on the couch with Jack. So he leaves it attached with a magnet on the fridge, gives you both soft forehead kisses and goes back to work, not minding the fact he did it quickly for no reason, happy you were resting and that it was done for when you decided to shop.

“yeah, not sure what all that was about,” he responded, situating himself next to you instead of across from you like usual. it made you raise an eyebrow at the irregularity, but you knew what he was trying to get up to the second his eyes raked over the form of your body. the dress you wore tonight (which would quickly become all the rage with young women in all of the neighboring kingdoms after seeing you) was beautifully simple with just a little bit of cleavage showing in the dip of the neckline and hugged your curves in all the right places, driving him absolutely mad this entire time. he simply couldn’t stop staring at you from across the room when you were both socializing with other royals and nobles. “your gown, on the other hand, is much more interesting…”

you tutted in disapproval and put your hands up in mock surrender in slight hopes of stomping out his dirty thoughts before they started, feeling your face get hot at how forward your lover was being. “edmund, i just got this dress tailored, i would like to wear it more than once. also, the coachman is going to hear us— the poor man is just trying to do his job! you can wait until we get home.”

“first of all, no bride of mine will ever need to wear the same outfit twice. second, i didn’t like how he looked at you when trying to be the one to escort you off instead of me. third,” he leaned in to whisper in your ear, ignoring the poor attempt of a barricade you had put up for him, “don’t act like the thought of him hearing us doesn’t turn you on too.”

“edmund,” you had intended to chastise him, but his name ended up coming out in a slightly desperate-sounding whine. “... we’ll have to be careful…”

“oh please, i’m nothing if not careful,” he insisted, more so with the intent of putting your concerns at ease rather than actually promising to practice caution, pulling you into his lap and having you sitting pretty while facing the window. he admired how your makeup accentuated your beauty and how your jewelry made you sparkle brighter than the stars in the sky, something he could only see from afar among the sea of people earlier.  “i’ve been waiting for this moment all night.”

“have you now?” your breath was caught in your throat, feeling his fingers bunch up the fabric of your gown before trailing over the bare skin, closer and closer to your aching core.

he hummed in response, brushing over your heat and gently massaging it with his knuckles, thoroughly enjoying the cute little noises you were trying to suppress and the wet patch on your undergarments quickly growing. “you know, judging by how soaked you are already, i’m starting to think i wasn’t the only one…” he pushed the lace aside and slipped in his middle finger followed by his index, earning a soft gasp which makes him grin cheekily. 

“what can i say, you look very dashing in your new royal robes.” despite your satirical tone, there was truth in your words, he really did look handsome in the navy blue suit adorned with golden decals and badges of past achievements, usually dark messy locks thoughtfully slicked with gel to style it in a way that flatters his features best. 

your sarcasm was quickly shut up when curled his fingers into your sweet spot, replacing your words with a sharp moan which made you cover your mouth with your hand. the coachman definitely heard that, and you felt your face getting hot, although you weren’t sure if it was from embarrassment or lust. either way, edmund was highly amused and continued to bully your sweet spot while rubbing your clit with his thumb until you gushed all over his hand and soaked the inside of your dress. thank god, it was multiple layers and wasn’t visible on the outermost fabric when you fixed yourself up to look as presentable as possible considering what just happened.

the carriage came to a slow stop along with the hoof steps, the sound of the coachman pulling on the reins with a soft “woah” followed by the whinnies of the horses reaching your ears. this time, the just king was quick to open the door first to escort you out after adjusting his suit to better hide his erection, keeping your slightly wobbly legs steady by holding you arm in arm all while shooting a certain look to the other man who was beet red to send a reminder that you were taken.

Gods, your friends have just been way too clingy recently! It feels like you're being torn apart by the limbs when Floyd's pulling you to go somewhere as Rook intercepts and Jamil needs you to taste something while Trey has a new recipe he wants you to try and you can't split yourself into 11 parts to satisfy all their needs! Ace, Deuce, Epel and Jack, the wolf beastman you've recently befriended, all snicker at you and smile as if there was something they knew that you didn't. That annoys you. Thus, you decide to live like a hermit and stay in your room as much as possible, playing that new open world RPG that just came out.

It's fun, but you've never really been into games before, which makes you stumble to memorize mechanics you just don't understand. Thankfully, you meet someone in the game who helps you out, and you think that he's really nice, if not a bit smug at times. You two clear dungeons and stuff together, and you marry him in the game for tax evasion purposes. You've gotten so addicted to this game that your friends have been banging on your door to get you to spend time with them, but to no avail. Instead, you spend lots of time with your online husband. It's not until you bump into someone while raiding a village on your phone that this 'online husband' finally gets a face. Your phone clatters to the ground along with someone's tablet, showing the exact same screen, making you gawk at this tall, lanky senior of yours with flaming blue hair and sharp teeth.

How...did you manage to become online spouses with Idia Shroud, the Prince of Ghouls?

He apologizes and so do you, but when you pick up your phone from the ground, you tell him that you're very thankful he helped you out when you were a noob. He takes your gratitude and walks away with what you assume is anxiety. You still play the game, though you've made the decision that you definitely won't be too close to the capture target this time! Right. Until somehow, you're in his room, cocooned in his blanket, and the two of you are playing fighting games in the dead of night as he crunches on some potato chips. Uh, how did this happen?

Anyway, you think Idia's a bit too socially anxious for murder, and he's just not the type for it. So you take off his name from the now very short list of capture targets to avoid, just in time for that RPG to come out with a babymaking update...?

"This sucksss."

"Come on, Idia senpai, just trust me!"

"I don't trust anyone."

You roll your eyes. "Okay edgelord. You'll love it though, promise." You lead him to the edge of your bed and open the cage. A dark gray kitty with blue flames coming out of its ears leaps at you, and Idia gasps loudly. "You got a cat?! What should we name it? Him, her?"

You chuckle softly and place the kitty in his arms, though it doesn't seem to like Idia too much. "Let's name him Grim, like the reaper. You can come by whenever you want to pet him."
