Some songs I feel are character specific, others also work for multiple episodes or the season overall.

A couple of them were actually temp radio songs for the episodes they're paired with (Don't Stop and Jerk it Out), and even though we couldn't get the rights they will always be there in my heart haha.

My favorite songs on the list are Hollywood Forever Cemetery (THE Brooklynn song for me), We're All Gonna Die, and Dinosaur (fits the whole show) <3

Also, that last song-- it came on the radio one morning when I was driving to work and the first line took me out so hard I almost crashed my car HAHA

I'm so bad at actually remembering to recommend fics I like, but I was just reminded of "You And Me Were Built for Violence" and I wanted to take a moment and recommend it to folks if they haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet! It's a Fuga Impossivel + 2b2t crossover fic where Tazercraft are washed up on 2b2t shortly after their escape from Alcatraz and are found by none other than FitMC. It's got some great Fit/Pac content and some really good Tazercraft content. 10/10 fic! There's only two chapters so far, but they're both very satisfying and well written.

Hey! Do you have any new sg ficrecs? something short?

I do, as a matter of fact! I've read a few excellent one-shots recently.

Dancing Cheek to Cheek by soot_and_salt is a lovely ballroom au, the butterflies-in-your-stomach kind of romantic. I think we need more self-contained, apparently implausible but ultimately effective, terribly romantic aus (yes, this is a challenge) (by 'we' I mean 'myself'. I need more of those).

whims and days colored orange by lakrisrot (enheduane)/@lakrisrot is a post-canon, established relationship fic that satisfied my craving for carefree seaside days and, especially, nights.

if you earn it by stygius/@stygiusfic is an incredibly hot canon divergent au set after the peace talks. If you're in the mood for some slightly messed up smut, this is your fic (check out their more recent foreign diplomacy as well for a delightful morsel of evil au).

Lastly, but only chronologically, Slip the Blindfold by timbrene/@tarydarrington is a post-canon, pre-relationship Aeor hurt/comfort one-shot that reads like a 6k trust fall.

Honorable mention to fray by saturdaysky/@saturdaysky, which is not a shadowgast fic (the pairing, which I would say is anything but romantic, is Ludinus/Essek), and which offers an interesting, original, and rather fucked up reason why Essek started keeping his hair short.

You asked for short fics, anon, but I also want to mention two ongoing wips that grabbed my attention lately and that I haven't recced here yet:

hopeless enough by 06151126 is a Formula 1 au with incredible vibes. I love hyper-specific aus and this one reminds me a lot of the climbing au, if you're in the market for something similar;

and a body in absentia by nonwal/@nonwal, a Scourger au, rated very much E, with some thoughtful and original representation of demi Essek.

I saw that you said you don’t read much VNC fanfiction, but of what you have read, do you have any recs?

In general, anything by fl4nel is probably an absolute banger imo. I have three (3) user subscriptions on Ao3, and they're one of them. Blood and Thunder is a fandom classic if you want a starting point, but their less popular fics are just as good. Their writing style is absolutely gorgeous, and they nail the sort of tension that good canonverse vanoé fic requires.

I'm also fond of fortuna, choosing sides by leovenus and you're the one (i think i'll regret this) by coffeebiscuits.

It's probably becoming clear by now that my favorite genre of vnc fic is more or less canon compliant oneshots in which vanoé pine and yearn and want each other without ever fully acting on that tension. Unfulfilled yearning that you can't voice would be Vanitas's middle name if he had one. And anyway, both of the above fics do that specific thing very well. There's a certain similar mood that they both capture.

To be entirely honest, beyond that, the vnc fic I read/reread most often is my own An Act of Trust. Might be mildly tacky to self-promo on a rec list, but I unabashedly love that fic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I think it's pretty solid, and if you want a taste of what I like in vnc fic, it's incredibly self indulgent in that regard.

Murderbot Fic Rec List: Ghosts

October is approaching, and it seems like a good time of year for some ghost stories!! (These are not all horror, and some aren’t even scary—if you’re looking for actual chills I’m not the person to go to, lol. These are just stories with ghosts.)

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday by TheSteelChimera 638 words, Teen And Up, Creator Chose Not To Warn

Ghosts aren't real, all evidence points to the fact that human superstition is just that, superstition.But wormholes are strange places, and the MNTS Perihelion knows that ghost ships are very real.

A ghost story featuring ART, and the last echoes of lost ships. The mysteries of wormhole physics are a perfect explanation for hearing voices in the void. I also highly, highly recommend the podfic by DevilWithABirdDress, which has some echoes and effects that absolutely enhance the spooky atmosphere.

Ill Omen by avg 5,511 words, General Audiences, Creator Chose Not To Warn & No Archive Warnings Apply

Despite the positive attributes of a ship ghost, there is one omen associated with its presence: no member of a ship blessed by its presence shall ever set eyes on it. It only ever becomes visible to the crew of a doomed ship.

An alternate universe ASR where Murderbot is a ghost!! Binding souls to survey habitats as a security service is absolutely something the company would do if it had that capability. Supernatural suspense and haunting as protection—the fantasy/sci-fi flavor of this one is very cool.

The Stowaway by Masu_Trout 2,712 words, Teen And Up, No Archive Warnings Apply

I wasn't even worried. That, I think, was my first mistake. Far outside of Corporation Rim, Murderbot meets a cargo bot with a strange story to tell.

A gem from wayyy back in the archive, published in 2017 when only ASR was out, but still impressively consistent with the tone of where the series has gone! Murderbot hears a ghost story that it doesn’t really believe, but then again…. This one also has a podfic available. the past is no forgotten promise by lunaTactics 1,942 words, General Audience, No Archive Warnings Apply

Maybe because I knew where the humans and augmented humans who had last used this ship had gone, that their descendants were running around all over this system." How can the ghosts of the past be frightening when they love, and are loved?     Remember us. We are a promise to you that there will always be hope.     You are home. The ghosts of the Pressy speak to their successors. Or, Murderbot is empowered to pursue the ideal SecUnit's rescue because Preservation's ideals support it.

A heartwarming ghost story, to finish off the list. Sometimes ghosts aren’t trying to scare you or keep you away—they want to welcome you home. This one gives me emotions (enough that I made art about it) and also has a podfic available.

When you look at them & are flooded with sadness because this is not the person you remember, that the person you know is dead.

Yet here they stand before you, a stranger in a familiar body. They are not dead, yet you still grieve for them, for the person you once knew.

2. Do you ever think about how things remain even after they're gone?

Do you ever think about the holes left in the fabric after the thread has been carefully unstitched?

The indent of an item long since removed, remaining after the item is no longer there?

The memory of a person you used to know, despite them no longer being the person you remember?

3. Can you look at someone, knowing all of the things they've done, both good & bad, & still love them? Still care for them? Can you still do that when the person you're looking at is yourself?
