most of these fics are pretty popular in the fandom, so this list is more directed at new fans just joining the winterhawk paradise!! (there's a lot on here tho, so maybe you find one you haven't read yet)

mika/bee asked for little to no smut, so i'm not gonna rec any pwp works here (with a few exceptions). if you want smut recs, hmu tho, i got y'all

there's obviously still smut in many of these fics, but i tried to tell you if it's important/skippable or not. if you don't mind smut i obviously recommend reading it bc GOD these authors just know their shit, but i think nobody should miss out on the amazing long fics just bc they don't like smut :)

i put a "notes" section for every fic where i just yap about it and/or my feelings towards it for a bit bc i literally can't shut up about these two guys.

important tags: no powers AU, oh my god they were roommates!, friends to lovers, mutual pining 

notes: every time i give winterhawk recs to a new fan i start with lucky in love, bc even tho it’s an AU, it has soo many of the typical winterhawk tropes i love so much. PLUS: roomates. and lucky. and every chapter is titled “aw, [something], no” and i find that way too funny to not mention. idk it’s just one of that fics that gives me the warmest & fuzziest of warm fuzzy feelings and i think everyone should read it. 

smut: even tho it has the wonderful, wonderful tag “not gonna tag every sex act just trust me there’s plenty”, there’s actually not that many. in my opinion, the perfect amount for a 60k, 21 chapters winterhawk fic. it’s quite a slow-burn, so they’re only in the later chapters anyway, and the build up to it is soOoo good. this is one of the fics where i know exactly where to find the smut scenes so feel free to hmu. 

Like Real People Do by Kangofu_CB

important tags: “i actually just wanted to watch these two idiots fall in love in a secluded cabin ok”; civil war fix it 

notes: no one, NO ONE  gets me like this fic, it checks like every single one of my boxes. perfection. not lying when i say it’s my favorite fic of all time. it doesn’t have a special premise or anything, but that’s the good thing about it. it’s just so… cozy. comfy. feels like home. i can’t even remember if like real people do is my favorite hozier song because of this fic or if it’s my fav fic bc like real people do is my fav hozier song, but i know that i never cried as hard as i did when i heard lrpd live and could only think about this fic. nothing makes me feel as good as re-reading this story, i want to eat it.

smut: yes, but only like 2,5 scenes. hmu and i tell you the exact fucking paragraph number or smth, this fic is literally engraved in my soul. thank you CB. some day i’ll leave a 2k words comment on every single chapter. 

The Other Man out of Time by sara_holmes 

words: ~97k 

important tags: time travel, falling in love, clint barton centric 

notes: okay, objectively speaking: this is the best winterhawk fic in existence. not my absolute favorite bc it makes me cry too much, but definitely top 3. no other winterhawk fic made me sob this hard, no other winterhawk fic makes me wanna curl up on the floor and cry for an hour every time i think about it. that being said: IT HAS A HAPPY ENDING!!! and a lot of stuff in between is SO sweet as well. premise is basically: clint travels back in time and fights in wwii alongside bucky and they fall in love. and then bucky!canon happens. you get it? you get it. it’s- UGH it’s so good. jesus. i’m crying. 

smut: a few short sexy scenes i think, but no SMUT smut, and it’s definitely definitely DEFINITELY not the focus of the story. can’t emphasise enough how much everyone should read this 

Hipsters get Remembered, Legend’s Never Die by sara_holmes

notes: millennial bucky is one of the most entertaining things fandom came up with, and this fic is the epitome of that trope. love love LOVE. plus, clint’s really fucking awesome in this. 

smut: yes, but only like two or three times in 11 chapters, easily skippable

Puzzle Pieces (series) by sara_holmes 

words: ~446k 

important tags: steve/tony, kid fic, emotional hurt

notes: if you don’t like stony this one isn’t for you, just skip to next one :) if you like stony: GOD pls read puzzle pieces!! the first 200k words fic is stony focused and has only pre-slash winterhawk, but even tho they don’t get together in this one yet it’s literally one of my favorite clint/bucky portrayals of all time, no one gets them like sara, it’s perfect. the stony/kid fic storyline is SO amazing as well, so if that’s your cup of tea, check. it. out. after that they’re a few longer winterhawk instalments, and while some of them are really angsty and painful, there’s always a happy ending. god i need to re-read this entire thing. it makes me wanna cry and throw up in all the good ways. 

smut: some, but you can definitely skip it.

smut: yes, at the end of it. you CAN skip it, although i recommend skimming through it and read the dialogue parts and stuff.

notes: quick story time for this one bc i remember it so so well lmao: winterhawk olympic bang 2022, most authors had started to post their fics except for CB and i KNEW she had written one, and i was literally checking my emails every hour for days. and then she finally posted it and i already started screaming when i saw the taylor lyrics as a title, and then i read those three tags and literally had to sit on my floor for 20 minutes to calm down bc i was so excited. i remember posting like 20 stories on my private insta that were just me keysmashing lmaoo. idk but teachers + kid fic + werewolves is just such a BONKERS combination, and i can promise you’re in for a treat, it’s so so fun. 15/10.

notes: the “first” instalment is a stony fic (one of my all time favs honestly) but with a lot of amazing side-winterhawk, and there’s a winterhawk spin-off, that’s a prequel to the stony arc, so you can just read that first if you want. it was one of the first english winterhawk fics i’ve ever read and it always makes me wanna cry when i think about it (in a good way).

smut: they’re quite horny in both big instalments, but i would say the smut is skippable. it’s not un-important for both the winterhawk and the stony dynamic tho, so i wouldn’t recommend doing that

notes: this one’s an ongoing series, and it’s such an amazing one, you can feel all the love that’s been put into this. you have to go through like 60k of slow burn before winterhawk actually happens, but it’s soooo worth it. plus: kid fic. kid fic’s always good. 

smut: yes, but only in the 3rd part and the short pwp oneshot. easily skippable

something magic, something tragic by squadrickchestopher

notes: VAMPIRES!!! that should be enough to convince you to read this fic!! and it’s by squaddy, it literally can’t be bad if it’s by squaddy.

smut: ughhh not entirely sure, pretty sure the mature rating is mostly for violence, but, again, it’s squaddy, so it’s very possible there’s some sexy stuff hiding in there.

Sweet Home Was Home by there_must_be_a_lock

notes: i found this one on accident once when i wasn’t really expecting to find another PERFECT long ass winterhawk fic i haven’t read yet, and then i binge-read it in one night, and it’s honestly one of the best i’ve ever read, it’s so so soft and… healing. for both bucky and clint and myself. it’s really not as popular as it should be imo, definitely worthy of a place on the first page of the ship tag!! highly HIGHLY recommend checking it out!!

I have a new work schedule now! And Lone Star is ending with season 5 real soon! That’s been fun getting used to… (/s) so I’ll post my fanfic/ music recs as one post tomorrow. Let’s see how much I can post w/o this becoming a complete image-less wall of stream-of-consciousness… but it will still be inevitable to everyone in the LS fandom who follows my handle and welcomed me. And if I haven’t said it yet, or enough, or sincerely in the last almost-year, thank you. Just thank you for your niceness, all your everything you’ve expressed, letting me be part of the fan group! I really really hope the end of the show doesn’t mean the end of this community, but whatever happens, it’s been a hella exhilarating, emotional, and lively experience.

(1) Which 911 Lone Star season premier is your favorite?

It’s a draw between seasons 2 and 4– I like the season premieres of 1 and 3 as much as everyone but holy hell I was not ready for the emotional twists in them to hit me the way they did. I am still in emotional recovery in both the good and bad ways. Both 2 and 4, until their respective cliffhangers, were quite light-hearted and self-contained with hints at the storylines to come, and those were easier for me to enjoy. Plus, Tommy, Gwyn and Iris (re-debut, in Iris’ case) had some colorful debuts! (I will always wish that Owen and Gwyn’s characters had a little more time together outside of the wit/ playfulness/ vitriol, and a couple more scenes with TK without their son always needing to be middle-man. But Rob, Lisa and Ronen played off of each other so well!) Gina’s portrayal of Tommy was just magnetically charismatic even without Michelle there— ‘Nuff said. And while I had issues with Iris’ bluntness (especially since it sorta re-opened some of TK’s emotional wounds), I could relate to being on both sides of a conversation in a similar situation to her— seeming hard to read/ confusing to most everyone around her (sometimes even with trusted family/ friends), and being confused/ offended by the delivery of what we convey.

(2) Which character do you think had the best introduction or first scene in the show?

I’m gonna say… it’s a toss-up between Judd and Grace for their natural first integration into the story and the first successful show>tell moment about them (specially Judd) in the series, Marjan (social media firefighter Muslim badass, in a description), and Mateo (for his own intro as unassuming but more than capable— Julian nails the portrayal of this character archetype in LS and The Long Game). Confusingly honorable mention goes to Michelle in hindsight, though? To me, she’s okay as a character, but I do understand where some fans were put off by her personality/ Liv’s portrayal.

(3) What is your favorite moment of 1x01?

Judd officially starting his end of the friendship with Owen by strong-arming him into accepting a chocolate chip cookie— you try saying no to a big Texan guy played by Jim Parrack and a mom and daughter holding a platter of chocolate chip cookies. Really, it’s tricky and you will probably get on their respective neutral if not shit lists. And Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” was quite a bop to end on! (Though, how did people find that wild? Just a little confused.)

(4) How did you first start watching Lone Star and how did you find out about it?

My aunt showed my mom and me the first parts of season 3– I saw… looking back on it, I’m a bit fuzzy on details but sometime in 2022 (def not consecutive days tho), I think I saw part of 3x04, then 3x07, and all of 3x08. And that last episode made me sob, I’m not ashamed to admit it now or in my grief week post. (My mom, grandma, uncle and aunt were watching it with me at dinner and were very confused about why I was crying.) Then I saw the last 3 eps, and it got me curious/hooked, so I went into season 4 kinda blind. Then I downloaded Hulu to catch up on the series proper, and the rest is rewatch history.

(5) What is one wish you have for the season 5 premiere?

Mostly that the overall narratives don’t feel too rushed or forced should there be a timeskip? I hate that Fox couldn’t get the show renewed… but on a lighter note? I’d like a solid explanation/ in-character reason for Grace’s absence that IS NOT a character death, a breakup, or anything relating to misblaming Wyatt.

Hey, anon! I will freely admit, like half of these recs are from my friends bc I haven't watched anime since last year or so. So I can't say much about plot or the draw or whatever for them.

Fullmetal Alchemist, of course. Most like Brotherhood better because it's canon-compliant, but it's a matter of preference. Anyway, just like in dgm, there's human experimentation, political intrigue, and deals with the proverbial devil. Also, competency. Love when people get shit done and kick ass whilst doing so. So great.

Moriarty the Patriot. This is one of the only items on this list that I've read & watched, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's a different spin on the usual Holmes-Moriarty story—as it's on the side of Moriarty. Moriarty works as a Lord of Crime (a sort of vigilante?) who kills nobles who abuse their power, in a time when society has stagnated and classes have been strictly stratified; meanwhile, Sherlock is slowly descending into obsession with catching and finding this elusive Lord of Crime. They're both very homoerotic about it. Like, they're playing a game of cat and mouse, but they both get so deep into each other's head that it's difficult to tell just who's the cat and who's the mouse. In every single one of their scenes together, the tension is palpable. If you're not into that tho, you can read them as "intellectual rivals". They're definitely in love, however

Anything from Mochijun. Her art is amazing!! She's definitely one of my fave mangakas, even if I exclude her beautiful storytelling from the equation. There's a sort of delicate subtlety in the way she shapes characters and demonstrates their motivations and reactions to plot events that reminds me a bit of Hoshino-sensei. I can only say anything definitive about Case Study of Vanitas because it's the only one of her works I've read and watched, but it does have a dgm-esque feel in its sense of inexorable tragedy despite the fun quirky cast made up entirely of characters who have experienced The Horrors and are actively repressing them, right at this very moment. There's quite a bit Mochijun leaves to subtext and reader interpretation, so reading comprehension is recommended. I can't say much about Pandora Hearts or Crimson-Shell other than that I've been assured they're guaranteed to make you scream. In fear? In anguish? I haven't the slightest, and I'm unashamed to admit that the real reason I've yet to read Pandora Hearts is because I'm very aware that it'd emotionally incapacitate me for like 3 business months lol.

Claymore. It's a dark fantasy shounen (does it count as being marketed towards young boys if the cast is entirely composed of women lol?), and from what I can tell, the power structure very loosely resembles the Innocence-akuma system. Everyone seems to use swords (or rather, the titular claymores), so obviously this gives this series an additional 5000 sexy points.

Elfin Lied, I guess? I know pretty much nothing about it other than that it has cool art, a good opening, and that it was namedropped in chat and like three other people unanimously and vehemently agreed to its nomination. I think it's dystopian(?) and focuses on social discrimination and ft. graphic violence. Reportedly, it's super fucked up. So head's up.

For DC i started fandom only and then moved on to actually reading comics which is why my opinions are so strong there bc I KNOW WHAT YALL ARE LIKE!

Hi Arrow. Do you recommend trying TF2? I like the funny guys but I have no FPS experience

Em. I am gripping you by the face. I have not been thinking about anything besides TF2 for the past two months. I absolutely recommend it.

I’m also not really big into FPSs, but I really enjoy the gameplay for it. There’s a fairly outdated tutorial you can play where it walks you through how to play a few of the classes that I found helpful to get a feel for the game, but there’s also offline training with bots that you can play to get a little more practice with each class until you feel comfortable enough to play online (if you even want to).

There’s also a lot of custom maps that people make just to be silly on (the Mario kart and McDonald’s maps come to mind lol). I’m personally a big fan of Mann vs Machine, where you and five others just fight waves of robots.

The game isn’t super great at walking you through things, so you would probably need to either have someone play with you to explain things or do some quick research on it, like reading the wikis or watching some videos about it. It’s pretty easy to pick up once you get it tho!

Also, TF2 has had a huge problem with bots in the past few years, so to be able to communicate through chat, voice commands, or voice chat, you have to spend at least $5 on the game. I just bought some silly cosmetics from the community shop, but you can also buy taunts and other weapons if you want.

There’s a ton to explore in the game and I learn something new every time I play tbh!!!

But!!! If you want to enjoy the silly guys without playing the game!!!! There’s comics!!!!!!!!!!!

There’s a lot of smaller comics that were released to introduce new updates which is really fun, but then there’s the main comic series that focuses on a big overarching plot that’s sooooo funny and silly and heartbreaking <333

It also (imo) helps establish some of the characters in really interesting way. Like they’re all fucked up little clown dudes, but the comics give a bit of insight for some of them. A couple of the characters get brushed over a bit because there’s nine of them and you can only do so much, but it still did a damn good job of getting me attached to them all.

The only problem is…it’s not finished. The second to last comic was published in 2017 and the last one has been “coming soon!” since then. :( I’d still recommended it tho bc the comics are really good! The art is gorgeous and everyone is sooooo silly.

AND if you don’t want to do THAT! Theres the Meet the Team videos that Valve made to introduce each of the mercs, plus a few other videos for updates and other things. I LOVE these. I watch em all the time lol. My personal favs are Spy, Pyro, and Medic but it doesn’t take long to watch them all.

AND THEN There’s a whole wide internet of SFMs (SourceFilm Maker) on YouTube!! A lot of them are super silly YouTube poop-like videos that are rawrXDomgLOL random. This isn’t super my thing so I don’t have any recs unfortunately.

But there was an SFM recently released called Emesis Blue that is driving me to the brink. It’s a full length psychological horror/thriller movie that’s like TF2 but real fucked up. It’s been living in my brain for a solid week. It lowkey kinda gave me nightmares so you may check out the Does the Dog Die page for it if you’re sensitive to horror, or skip it all together.

Also kind of a blanket trigger warning for all media listed is blood, guns, violence, and bodies exploding into cartoon meat chunks. Fun stuff lol.

So there’s a lot of ways to enjoy the fun mess that is TF2. Let me know if you get into it bc hooooly shit I love this funny hat game so much.

i love goodreads too and criticism of books I FIND AT BARNES AND NOBLES😁… because i’m able to avoid things like bad grammar, bad literary skills, poc and queer trauma porn, and other shit i don’t wanna be exposed to.

what i do think is valid, is asking a fic writer to tag properly. i’ve read shit and been blindsided cuz “dead dove” tags weren’t added. i’ve even asked and they’ve made it a point to belittle me. i thought it was a good fic in terms of plot but i wanted to be able to blacklist those words for if they wrote more content. but they completely turned me off due to how they responded so i just never wanted to read more of their work.

i didn’t harass them because frankly it had content i didn’t like (not anything that would make me question their overall morality, unless you count the not tagging, but that’s a bit much). instead i just blocked them and moved on.

there have been times where the grammar in a fic was really bad, the formatting of a fic had huge gaps that made reading difficult, or they didn’t put a cut on their fic. i didn’t contact them, i just blocked them.

so for the love of baby jesus, just block. only when you feel that something DETRIMENTAL is being posted like WHITE SUPREMACIST MANIFESTO or SOCIALLY TABOO type shit is being PROMOTED (they need to actually believe in this shit) in someone’s writing and has built a following of like-minded people, then really the troops so we can deal with it.

but bad grammar or that yandere fics with non-con in is not something to be harassing people over.

(some folks writing language is not their first so they’re learning thru writing or they’re a native speaker who still messes up/has a disability and just because some likes to write/read dark fics doesn’t mean they advocate such acts. plus while it may not be the healthiest, it’s some people’s coping mechanisms and i can’t blame them cuz a good therapist is hard to find and even harder to pay for —at least in the US)

so go read shit you actually like. and if you just so feeeeel it in yo spirit to rate some fics and leave bad reviews download Calibre Library and have at it. it is only seen by you and on your computer. so make that your lil hate diary or whateva🙄

behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon everyone should watch behind the mask it deserves the world it deserves a sequel i love it so much leslie is one of the most fun slashers ever if only bc w the nature of the movie you get to know him so well and he's so fun and likeable and charming but when he gets into it he's pretty convincing. it's insane. he's great and the movie's so fun and original i cannot recommend it enough

creep is insaaaane insane insane insane once again barely a slasher but it's one of the most. movies of all time. an Experience. especially the first one. in some ways the slasher here is kinda like billy in that he's unknowable but you love him anyway. it's creative and original and reminds me of behind the mask and it's just honestly Honestly one of my favorites and i love this fuckin guy too

candyman god god god god. in the same vein of nightmare i love a slasher w some supernatural fuckery goin on. also congrats on being one of the very few franchises that got a sequel late in the 2010s that was GREAT. the other sequels aren't bad either tbh they just get weird but they're all a good watch. and the character mr candyman himself he's the beeeest he's in the never did anything wrong category he hashtag saves the bees he's charming and romantic he's got magic powers he's the most stunning man in the history of horror movies easily everything abt candyman's great and he's a great character w a slapping origin story

uhhh scream. sure. you know how uhhh i don't know if it's a spoiler but. the nature of ghostface. makes it hard to care abt him as a character. ifyky. so. i can't put it any higher if i'm ranking based on character. but obviously syd's the focus and she's great and the movies are worth watching forever and always they're wonderful and i think they're holding up well even w the recent sequels

martin 1977 this movy. not Quite a slasher but close enough. the movie's been described as a long character study so you can imagine the main character's enjoyable and you spend a lot of time w him and you get to know him but at the same time you're not really sure you understand what's going on??? he's just a little guy. he's just a scared lonely little vampire guy. i love him and the movie's so underrated it makes me boil w rage

slumber party massacre. don't judge the franchise based on the first movy bc while that's just Fine on its own shit really picks up from the second one. you will never see something like spm2 in your life and you will never find a slasher guy more fun or more iconic or more cunty than the driller killer the love of my fuckin life he's got EASILY the coolest weapon out of ANY of these guys YES. BEATS FREDDY'S GLOVE TOO. and he SINGS AND PUTS HIS WHOLE PUSSY INTO THE PERFORMANCE I JUST CAN'T EVEN PUT INTO WORDS HOW INSANE THIS MOVIE IS

prom night. oh my god. Similarly to slumber party massacre. the first movie's fine if not a bit forgettable. but the second one is what really Matters. prom night 2 has been perfectly described as a mix of nightmare and carrie and it just slaps so so hard. mary lou is incredibly fun and i think she deserved to do everything she did i support her rights and most importantly her wrongs

sleepaway camp it's insane how much i love sleepaway camp but it's one of those movies that you might uh. wanna be careful with? the twist ending to the first movie is kinda infamous and idk some might be a bit. upset by it. feel free to ask for details but. ye i think all four movies are great even tho 2&3 kinda go off the trail and 4 has Nothing to do w them. i love. both versions of The Slasher who i won't name to avoid spoiling it but i love love love love this slasher so so much once again i support the rights And wrongs (which do not exist) of this slasher and it's got some of the most Fun kills you'll ever see w STELLAR bad special effects which are the love of my life

silent night deadly night SLAAAAY this movie's fucked up. it's so brave. look up some cws the inciting incident might be upsetting. it's the second christmas slasher w a killer named billy. this billy has (sing along if you know it) Done Nothing Wrong! he's my little baby have you seen him little face!! he's doing his best! he's my poor little meow meow! he does some super fun kills! i only watched the first two so far and the second's kinda shitty and the others seem to be Weird (derogatory) and i'm not sure abt the 2000s remake i'll update you when i get there but the first one's a fun time

house of wax 2005 boyfriend type of movie i love when the bad guy is a Family i wish we got another movy abt those guys or smth it's a. a fun movie. it's very 2000s. helena's in the end credits. sam supernatural is there. it's one of those movies you can't say too much abt without spoiling who the slashers are even tho it's not good enough to make it worth keeping the secretsbfjakfk JK but i Love them and how they operate <3 real creative artistic activity going on in there! slay!

freaky 2020. instant fave instant classic a very successful recent slasher that keeps the charm of vintage ones imo. i'm down bad for the butcher but i can't rank him higher om account of we don't actually see much Of him due to. the whole Thing abt the movie. the main plot point. he seems like he's a pretty standard slasher big quiet scary dude type so whatever. points for being middle aged and kinda hot
