A week ago I've decided to try to go vegan for health reasons and holy crap. Groceries are already so expensive here but daaang. Now I know why vegans are so skinny. They can't afford to buy enough food lol

Some friends have recently been saying to me, “You’re always saying completely nonsensical things like, ‘This weekend, I made vegan pepperoni’—what the fuck does that even mean?!?!?”

Glad you asked. Here’s a gallery of photos taking you through the basic steps of creating vegan deli meat—from my recent weekend extravaganza making pepperoni, capicola, and bacon.

In order, we have:

Getting all the ingredients together.

All the ingredients in a blender (minus the vital wheat gluten).

The blended liquid in bowls.

Seitan dough made by combining the liquid with vital wheat gluten flour.

That beautiful dough wrapped up tightly in foil to bake.

The cooled dough ready for slicing.

The results of slicing—delicious vegan deli meat.

All that goodness vacuum packed so we can freeze it and eat it later.

my dad did go grocery shopping and managed to find some goat cheddar 🥳

#i would pay good money to watch this 70 year old man trying to find the logic in the grocery store layout #why are there 3 different cheese sections? because there are #the real answer is that the fancy deli counter cheese is front & centre right when you walk in to capitalize on impulse shopping #the organic/vegan cheeses are in the health food section so they're easy to find for customers who shop that section #and then the bulk of the cheese is in the dairy fridges at the far end of the store so that when you do your regular perimeter sweep #you grab your refrigerated/frozen items last before heading to the checkout #but would that make sense to my father who goes into a grocery store on average once a decade?#not in the slightest

are you also kind of obsessed with rich g @yallhavingbirthdaycakes vegan deli? I live close enough to RI ive genuinely thought about trying to head down. I dont even eat vegan food im just fascinated as to what a vegan deli is...

i'm definitely pretty intrigued about it yeah! his band edict have played around the general area of where i go to college in the recent(ish) past and i think some of the local band in my area have been to his deli (i could be remembering wrong but i think at least 1 band tagged the deli account in one of their stories) so i def feel i guess more of an incentive to go there at some point

as for what a vegan deli is, i guess it's like a regular deli but all the options are vegan? Idk
