Ok so. These are my tattoos and I’ll give a reason why for them (if there is one)
So the first one I got was the dream catcher (I know basic white girl shit) it’s kinda for my grandma on my moms side I never got to meet. She was always super interested in Native American culture and stuff so I kinda got it for her.
The second one is actually the quote right there. It’s from the first hunger games book and it’s when katniss sees herself for the first time after the glam squad. There’s just something about that quote that stuck with me.
Tattoos 3&4 the word is wanderlust and then the globe with a flower(obviously doesn’t look like a flower😂) I love traveling so this was a no brainer for me honestly. Yes the colors are patchy af. I don’t think my skin likes colors or something 😂
This is 5,6&7. 5 was honestly cause I wanted it. 6 is the name of a song weirdly enough. And 7 again just another phrase that I liked.
8,9&10. 8 is ; self explanatory if you know.(it’s actually covered up but I am still counting it bc I can still see it😂) 9 is always keep fighting. It’s something Jared Padalecki says and has made shirts/hoodies for (I have 2) 10 is a wave. I absolutely love the ocean and my happy place is honestly on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.
11…….can I act like this one doesn’t exist. No? Fuck ok. Soooooo this is a “matching” best friend tattoo. (If you need a sign to not get matching bestie tattoos HERES THE SIGN. DONT. FUCKING. DO. IT.) This is a matching one me and my now ex best friend got. It’s her hand writing the mermaid tail(well aware it doesn’t look like one) is her drawing as well. Her fave Disney movie she got the tangled lantern cause it’s my fave. Idk if the bitch still has hers I am honestly prob covering the tail part but keeping the word bc it can be a reminder of the time me and my family went to Hawaii. With that being said next.
This is 12,13&14. 12&13 are both runes from shadowhunters. Love that show had to have them. The heart is a nod to another ex friend but I don’t really care about that one. I’ve always like little heart tattoos so yeah.
This is 15,16,17,18,19. 15 a nod to Harry Potter and the flash(also just wanted it) 16 is actually the new ; which is shaped like planets and all that. 17 is my little Taurus symbol cause I am a Taurus. 18 is the Vikings V logo. One of my favorite shows and I needed it so badly. And last but not least 19 my arrow head for Arrow. Again another favorite show that I had to get it.
I will be adding more in a few days when I get my next 3. I’m honestly so freaking excited about it.
#Mandy’s talkin tattoos#Learn about Mandy#Please ignore the fact you can see my leg hair pores😭#Mandy’s tattoos

Isgt I'm gonna try to keep it short but I make no promises lol... I do have LBAF V and VI to catch up to I have no regrets...
Selena having Arthur will always make me soft, and ngl I was kinda pissed at Lexi and Gabriel at first. I get them, but Lance is just baby🥺. Also, Lance helping Selena with the pain while giving birth and basically protecting Arthur before Arthur was born PLEASE I CAN'T 😭
Fucking hate Victoria for training Kincaid so young and also Madeline making life miserable for David. Those two are on my list of people I am willing to become a criminal for 😤
I don't know what drugs Other Max is on, but I can't deny he is funny as fuck LMAO. That scene with him and the shadowhunters trying to take the institute omfg
Max and Other Max convos always have me conflicted because they're so intense but at the same time it's him fighting with himself! Pls this man took self-hatred to a whole different level😂
Kincaid🥺🥺🥺. The first meet with Arthur was>>>>. I will kidnap that boy if I have to, he's the sweetest boy ever and he likes the other sweetest boy ever MY HEART CAN'T HANDLE THAT!!
“Why would you be scared of shadowhunters?” “Why would you be scared of shadow demons?” Arthur asked, equally confused. THE WAY THIS REFLECTS THEIR REALITIES ARE ON OPPOSITE ENDS. Arthur, growing up with Lance, is used to demons being friendly because his brother controls them and would probably tell them to never harm his family vs Kincaid. Growing up in Idris, being scared of what they have seen the shadow demons do... Fucking wow
Antoine really be giving books and changing lives. I want to be like him growing up🥰. Also he and Abigail???? HOT!!!
Someone said the experiment Atlas was trying with the lemon juice on paper was foreshadowing of Lance having angel blood but only being able to see it if you add another thing and I can't stop thinking about it. Still not sure it would matter to the clave if he did, but at least that way Lance and AJ could be parabatai!!! Tell me they will be. That's all I'm asking at this point 😭
I get Rafael having to put up wards against Lance, or someone might do something worse, but also... Dick move😒
“He does,” Rafael chuckled. “But that’s okay. He is my little brother. He has always hated me a little bit. The same way Abigail hates you. I’m fine with it. I can handle the hate. What I can’t handle is if he ever stops trusting me.” My therapist will hear about this, Dani😭
Gigi is the MVP. Only smart person here with common sense and fucking empathy. I'm glad to see the apple didn't fall far from the tree with Atlas 🥰. I just love how much Atlas loves his mom and is constantly thinking about her sjhskdbdj
Alec's chapter is to chaotic to sum up but I loved movie night 🥺🥺 and these kids are so unhinged jshsjdikwkk. Also see him being a grandparent makes me so emotional. He was just 18 yesterday wtf??? 😭
The confusion was comforting. He knew life wasn’t easy for the residents of this institute. But there was a small comfort in the fact that Arthur would never have to hide that part of himself. BOY DO I GOT YOU SOME NEWS-
Every part of Lance's chapter killed something in me🙂. This one was a whole other level of weakness. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for this boy. I'll have you know I am obsessed with them. Sibling dynamics just hits different 🥲 and I will make a whole other ask about them just because I can!!
It’s Theia Blackthorn. The Inquisitor’s daughter.” “Jesus Christ,” Lance said. “Raziel wasn’t available?” Say what you will about this asshole, but his humor is top tier!!! Also love how Blackbane form the start are so fucking horny and funny. Like they say the most out of pocket stuff and then cough and stutter JSHSJDJKDKDKD
Joan really be having the worst time here. Being 14 years old, wanting a friend and having a big crush on a straight girl??? Now that is a though life😔. I think her and Kincaid's friendship would fix me tbh... And I just fucking love her, she's so chaotic and gay🥰. All miscommunication aside, they did a fantastic trio
Her group chat with her grandparents 😍😍😍. They are the best!!! Damn, I wish my grandparents would have loved me lmao
“Yeah, because, going to a castle full of women is the right solution for lesbianism,” Mommy giggled. Me, age 13 when I thought going to an all girls school would be a good idea to stop liking girls. PS. I didn't go, but I feel it would have only made me gayer...
the way I read this and already miss LBAF V (like I finished writing it only a month ago lmao) these kids have already grown so much WTF.
Also something I really like about LBAF is that it gives me a lot of space (literally - like room!) to explore so many different types of relationships and dynamics instead of just romantic ones - which has anyone been one of my main interests when writing a story. I love that I can explore sibling relationships - like the dynamic between Lance/Arthur is SOOO different, let's say, what exists between Antoine and his sister or Cami and Arjun and all of them exist in the same story and it's just sooooo fun to play around with that.
PS - I went to an all girls school too (a convent no less) and YEAH IT'S TOUGH IF YOU ARE GAY AHHH.

forgot to say this earlier but izzy was v cute on her date with charlie <3 like he’s sweet and all but idk i just got really choked up about “i don’t really do this” and how smiley and giggly and happy she was. because like!!! she Does Not! has not, ever! she does flings and hookups and casual relationships with the understanding that it’s not long-term partnership, even if it’s ongoing and has genuine feelings attached - and to be clear, none of that is bad! she very clearly enjoys it! there is not one right way to Do Relationships! but whatever feelings one may have about the doylist Why of it, she very clearly does long for some sort of relationship that happens to be out of her comfort zone. she begins to feel that she needs something that she is not getting from the kinds of relationships she has historically been in.
raphael was fully the catalyst btw. and while his asexuality is about him first and foremost - i think the fact that he cares about isabelle inn some capacity, has feelings for her, and sees her value outside of sex made her reevaluate her priorities in relationships. Things (TM) got in the way, but izzy says to clary that what she almost maybe had with raphael made her realize that she wanted more. (again, ‘more’ is not an ideal word, just the one she used becaue it is hard for people, writers of this show included, to conceptualize that casual relationships can be meaningful in their own way. but she very clearly is wanting something different than what she’s ever let herself pursue.)
it’s kind of why, on a narrative level, i get why simon is a good match for her, even if i generally agree that how it happens feels forced and rushed. (aside from that just being book!canon, which i do not really subscribe to dhdhdh.) like. it was never going to work with charlie because she would either have to bring him further into her world - which would endanger him and therefore she would not do - or keep seeing him but keep him in the dark about the shadow world. which she quickly realizes is unsustainable. (and would probably still endanger him if she kept on tbh).
simon’s a good balance because i think he embodies a lot of what draws her in about charlie. they’re both kind and treat her with a kind of gentleness few do. (her brothers of course, but that’s a) a different dynamic altogether and b) muddied by the fact that they’re all soldiers together and can’t always afford to be gentle.) simon, i’m willing to bet, would take her on lots of cute dates. like!!! simon just represents humanity in Such a Specific way, in perseverance, in loyalty, in still having passion for things like music and video games. and despite her flaws, i think one of izzy’s best traits is that she sees the value in this more than most of her people do, she’s drawn to it, she understands that the joy of the mundane world is what they’re actually protecting, what they’re fighting for.
and simon can be all that to her but still will understand when she has to cancel a date because patrol is going long or whatever. lmao.
(okay this is already so long and windy and going a million directions but. here’s the thing i don’t doubt that izzy has genuine romantic feelings and love for simon. i try to take it in good faith when it’s clear characters are written as having feelings for each other. it just occurred to me that how hopeless and lowkey depressed or at least… somewhat despondent and apathetic about her future prospects izzy seemed at the start of s3 is bc. idk how many options she felt she had? like. idk. as established, mundanes are just… not super viable. other shadowhunters are…. largely probably not willing? for better or worse, she has the lightwood name, and it’s tainted. also, i’m shot back to season one where maryse told izzy that she couldn’t do the arranged marriage because no one would have her because of her past relationships with downworlders. and while maryse was being undoubtedly cruel there, i also don’t think she was like, wrong. narratively it would always make the most sense for her to ‘end up’ with someone from the downworld but even then…. public shadowhunter/downworld relationships are shown to be rare!!! alec and magnus are a Big Deal for a lot of reasons and this is one of them!!! and many downworlders (for good reason!!) would have a lot of trouble trusting a shadowhunter in a capital R Relationship. so while there may have been downworlders who were willing to interact with izzy - who would like and respect her, even ! - i find it likely that given all that and her past reputation, many would probably only be willing to engage in a casual dynamic with her. which is no longer what she wants!
so izzy’s somewhat depresso espresso moment in the show is caused because she knows she wants to make a change in the way she does relationships and she’s also incredibly aware of how, like, there are Several Obstacles.
but again on the sizzy front this is not actually a bad thing for them because. simon is in a really weird but good place in terms of. he knows about the shadow world and can relate to izzy on that level. but he is also literally still So New to the shadow world that he has no preconceived notions of her. he meets her with no expectations, good or bad, of what it should mean that she’s a lightwood or a shadowhunter. the first three people he meets from this world are izzy and her brothers, two people that love her to death, and even though at this juncture simon does not care much for alec or jace, he is a smart and observant person. he knows how much they love her. he was always a little pre-disposed to eventually love her too, i think. he sees her as a more complete person than many do - he sees her (eventually) as a badass shadowhunter and a terrible cook and someone who’s scared of rats and doesn’t know how to do pinky promises and loves her family more than she knows what do with. he just sees her and yes, loves her, eventually, but i think what’s maybe more meaningful to her is honestly that he LIKES her, just, as a person. not just because she’s hot or strong or a lightwood (*which certainly feels like the only reason her parent’s care, at least sometimes) but because she’s Izzy.)
#shadowhunters rewatch 2023#long post //#this is incoherent bordering on gibberish#it was supposed to be an ‘izzy cute :D’ post and instead i word vomited#i had a lot of thoughts and feelings#isabelle lightwood#tag later#not sure this makes one lick of sense#but i spentban hour on it and it is so long I cannot just delete it#i am now. SO sleepy

Yoichi Saotome AU Verses
RWBY: Yoichi hails from Menagerie as an orphan though since his parents aren’t alive. He lived with his sister, Tome until her passing because of her illness which finally caught up with her. Yoichi is a cat faunus with a set of car ears and feline looking eyes. After Tomoe’s passing, he was apart of the White Fang for a few years before Adam took over. He decided to become a hunter though, joining Haven Academy to learn what he can to fight against the Grimm. v: the cat faunus
Percy Jackson: Yoichi is the son of Athena who is goddess of wisdom, war and useful arts. He was brought to Camp Half-Blood around the age of ten, his memories were a blur about what happened to his family though. He was found wandering around after the enemies of the gods attacked his family, before Athena told the protectors that Yoichi was her son. The young demigod was confused and scared about the sudden changes that were happening, but he was placed underneath the care of one of the protectors to help raise Yoichi plus the appearance that Athena would make once in awhile, mostly when Yoichi needed her. Since that day, this camp has become his home and helped hone the skills that he as born with. v: the son of Athena.
Shadowhunter: Yoichi was found by Guren at a random orphanage being the last living member from the Saotome family, it was unknown on what happened to his parents while his sister had killed by a demon. He was brought to the New York Institute joining the team of Shadowhunters that were already there. A team that ended up becoming his new family because of the bonds that were formed. He was the type of fighter that they were missing though since he has the skills of a sniper using the weapon that has become his favorite. v: the last Saotome
Pokemon: Yoichi comes from the Unova region, growing up in Aspertia City under the care of his sister. After getting his first pokemon Eevee, he decided that he was going to start traveling to figure out what he wanted to do in the world that he lived in. He hopes that he will be able to find the answers during his travels and find something that will interest him. Team: Eevee, Absol, Shinx, Purrloin, Blitzle, Deerling. v: the one from Unova
Paranormal: Yoichi was born as a medium even though he didn’t understand his abilities until he was older. His parents thought that he was making it up as the only one who believed him was his sister, she was the only one that he could talk to her about it. It wasn’t until the medium that was his mentor referred him to a team that needed his help because of the place they were investigating. Yoichi soon became apart of that team though, helping with the abilities that he was born with. v: the one who communicates with ghosts
Fantasy: Yoichi is a half-elf with human blood that runs through his veins, it makes the wood elf be an outcast though since humans and elves want nothing to do with him. The elf side of his is twisted as that is a personality that Yoichi tries to get hidden, a side that he doesn’t want anyone to know about. The woods are a safe place for him as a comfortable place for him to live since he is an elf of nature. v: the outcast
College:Yoichi decided that he was going to become a double major because of his interest in art and history which caused him to get involved with studio art and history. The long hours can keep him busy because of how much work he has to do to keep his grades up. It is common to see him with his favorite time of drink especially the mornings after a rough night of leaning over textbooks. v: the art and history major.
Airbender: Yoichi has the blood of a water and earthbender flowing through his veins while it is unknown on who is parents actually are since his sister raised him in the Ba Sing Se in the middle ring of the City. His bloodline as a waterbender had to stay secret because of the Fire Nation, it was the main reason why he only used earthbending even though he did study about the Water Nation in secret. He hopes that he will be able to learn more about the Water Nation someday and actually learn how to bend water. v: of water and earth
Castlevania: Possibly being the last living heir to the Saotome family, Yoichi was raised like a warrior alongside his sister with the knowledge of how to fight against many different creatures that threatened the human race. From demons to other creatures of the supernatural, Yoichi continues to travel around offering aid where he can depending on what is attacking the village and if he gets there in time. v: I fight monsters

cracks knuckles* alright this is going to be more of a rant than an analysis because i’m basing this on both my research, but also how it felt to personally be baited by these shows. there are obviously more pieces of bad (almost every horror movie) and good ones but these are the ones i’ve watched.
please keep in mind that i am but one queer and everyone has different opinions.
Supernatural (CW) 2005
This show is 15 years old and just ended. From season 5 till 15, there has been tension between two of the lead characters. They were constantly shipped together and not only did the entire fandom know about this ship but so did almost all of Tumblr. On top of that, the actors and show runners knew about it as well. Which is why it makes it ridiculous that it was constantly pushed aside while the romantic coding kept happening, even after show runners dismissed it as being intentional. The Destiel (Dean x Cas) case has been going on for years, and as the show came to its end, many fans had hope. But N O P E. Instead, we got a love confession from Cas where Dean looked like he was near constipated and the Cas was killed and sent into a fiery place that was not hell but s u p e r h e l l.
… w hy.
Sherlock (BBC) 2010
Just like Supernatural, this show was renown on Tumblr for not only how good it was, but its hinting at a potential relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. But again, like Supernatural, the intentional tension between the two characters was denied by producers. This caused an uproar within the fandom, and even left some people believing that, after the last season aired, it had been a joke and the producers were hiding a “secret, unaired season” because they had felt so robbed by this show that had implied something and denied it.
The 100 (CW) 2014
We got lesbians. We got background gays. We were happy. Then, all of a sudden, one of them is killed for no reason. Did it advance the plot? No. Was she fighting and died in battle? lol no. She was doing literally nothing and got shot and died. And then the producers kept bringing her back once a season in the form of a ghost or illusion because why? Because she was a fan favourite queer character. ✨bury your gays and sparingly bring them back for profit anyone?✨
Voltron: Legendary Defender (Netflix) 2016
*deep breathe* This one is a special disaster. Not only was there romantic tension and romantically coded scenes for 7 seasons, but producers, voice actors and artists working on the show repeatedly said “don’t worry klance (Keith x Lance) shippers, you’ll be happy”
. … w h e r e??? You code one of their scenes with a sunset in the background while they talk about love and then one of them goes on a date with someone who has declined his advances for 7 seasons but now in season 8 decides to do a full 180. Not only that, but you announce at a Comic Con (a convention) that a character is gay and has a fiancé, only to kill off the fiancé and never make it explicit in the show except at the last second of the last episode where he marries a no name character.
Personally, i’d like to say a big fuck you to the show that strung me along for 2 years and never stopped saying we’d be happy to then pull the rug out from under us and call us crazy for thinking anything from the past 8 seasons was intentional.
Scooby-Doo (2002)
While not being outwardly queerbaiting, this movie’s filmmaker has just revealed some shocking news, which wasn’t at all shocking to the gays who had watched this movie over the years. In July of 2020, James Gunn, the filmmaker of Scooby-Doo, revealed in a podcast that, initially, Velma was explicitly gay in his script, but then the studio watered it down until it became nothing. This isn’t an example of baiting as much as it is changing a character’s initial design to “better fit an audience”. The worst part of all this is that with Velma’s character having been written with a l i t t l e queer subtext, people had been theorizing about if since the movie came out, but were always yelled at by the internet for “imagining something that isn’t there”. But now, even with it being said that the initial point was for her to be gay, people have no objections to still refusing to accept it. Why?? So we can’t get the subtext gays OR the confirmed gays?? Make it make sense.
Brooklyn 99 (NBC) 2013
To have the queer characters firstly introduced without mentioning their sexualities and have it brought up naturally was so goddamn nice to see, because no one does a big deal about it unless they ask for that. This show is amazing in general but the way they show their queer characters is *chefs kiss*.
She-ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix) 2018
This. Show. My heart SOARS. It's just a remake of an old show so absolutely nothing was ever expected, but then it was sprinkled in and ENDED WITH A BANG. And it was so beautiful and real to see the struggle of two friends who care for each other and want to be together but have different visions of the world fall in love. And they also had characters with disabilities, a non-binary character and jUST SUCH A GOOD SHOW.
Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeasts (Netflix) 2020
This is a case where you go into it not expecting anything and are BLOWN AWAY by the bare minimum. And not because it’s bad!! It's mind blowing because this is the simple representation we need!! Not something over the top, but an every day relationship. It’s just two boys falling in love and going on dates and being nervous around each other, yet i was so stunned. Because it’s not shown enough. I should not be this excited over something that should be this normal. 10/10 though this show is so good for all kinds of representation.
Steven Universe (Cartoon Network) 2013
This show did so much for queer representation with its general message of loving everyone and loving who you want. Especially since it was aired on Cartoon Network, a channel for kids, it was able to help normalize something so looked down upon in some circles. It made it easy to watch for s o m e people because it's a cartoon but it's so beautiful to see these ladies so in love with each other, both platonically and romantically and we see them have a family dynamic that isn’t a “nuclear family”. Rebecca Sugar (creator) really said “lemme just break all stereotypes real quick”.
Adventure Time (Cartoon Network) 2010
It's the “knowing a fanbase shipped something so hard that the creators made it canon” for me. This relationship had been theorized by fans for years, but it had never been explicit in the show. When the finale episode came out and the two shared a kiss, it was a moment of celebration. The producer of the show said that it had not really been planned but when the episode was being made, the choice of what happened was given to one of the artists (bless your soul Hanna K. Nyströmthe). And as the show releases little bonus episodes, its latest was centered around Marceline and Bubblegum and their relationship. AND WE LOVE TO SEE OUR DOMESTIC LESBIANS BEING HAPPY AND IN LOVE.
Yuri on Ice!!! (anime) 2016
The fact that an A N I M E gave us a love story between two men is mind boggling and it makes me so happy!! Especially because it's a Japanese show and they’re very conservative about these things just makes it more emotional. The creators said they wanted to make the anime take place in a world where gay/straight isn’t a thing, it’s just love (ladies, you’re going to make me cry). So as the weekly episodes came out and fans start speculating, THEY GAVE US THE LAST FEW EPISODES FULL OF ROMANCE AND EMOTIONAL SCENES BETWEEN THE TWO AND THEN THEY GET R I N GS?!???!! You watch for the figure skating, you stay for the figure skaters that are in love.
Shadowhunters (Freeform) 2016
*insert me being frustrated that the actors are straight so we can move on from that disappointment*
This show really said “let’s name a whole episode after this couple because they deserve it”. But seriously, they gave us two characters whose entire plot does not center around their sexualities while still showing us the differences in a relationship between someone experienced and someone new at this. They were both powerful and amazing characters apart from each other, with their own story lines and goals but they loved each other so much omgs. SO MUCH.
It was so great to watch.
Love, Simon (2018)
There’s a lot of disagreement on whether this movie is good representation or not. However, we need to take into consideration that this was Hollywood’s first movie with a main character that was gay, where the story’s focus was on Simon’s love story. The biggest problem, for me at least, was that the actor playing Simon is a straight man and not queer. My problem is not with him, but the fact that there are other actors that are gay and that could have played Simon just as well. (the love interested was however played by a queer actor so ✨progress✨)
All in all, this movie does represent what a lot of queer kids have to go through: being outed at school, how they then come out, the bullying and doubt they go through.
The book is also really good.
Call Me By Your Name (2018)
This movie is so aesthetically pleasing and was able to capture the confusion and heartbreak felt by a boy who’s struggling with his own feelings towards a man. His inner conflict and joy and l o v e he feels but doesn’t know how to deal with is so well communicated through the screen and just breaks your heart because it feels so real.
But again, they could’ve gotten gay actors to play gay characters…
through having this list here, i want to show you that it’s not hard for creators to give good queer representation. the LGBTQ+ community isn’t asking for much, we just want to be well represented on screen as just a regular character, not some token queer kid there for the diversity points. having been exposed to so much queerbaiting and just not seeing any representation on screen, i always get over-excited when i see a queer character, and that’s not how it should be. it should be a normal thing, something you can find in most pieces of media, just like there’s a straight white cisgender person in everything.
and they seriously need to start casting queer actors for queer characters...

In Another Universe: Chapter 6 - The Bone City
Clar dreamed one of a place that seemed out of a fairy tale, there was apparently a ball, it wasn't a ball room them but it was beautiful, there was a fountain with a mermaid, and there were people dancing everywhere. he turned his head and saw Simone at his shoulder, she said. "Do you find someone else more interesting?." suddenly they were dancing, He looked at her closely and realized she was beautiful. There were Alec and Isidore, holding hands like hansel and gretel, both in royal blue. "Welcome, welcome to the Glass City," said a voice that was not Simone's. He realized she was gone and he was now dancing with Jayce, she was in a slim cut dress that was slit with a v in the front, it was a amber gold, it went perfectly with her short golden curls shining in the light, her deep tawny beige skin and golden eyes, she was so beautiful, he wanted to paint her, darker and lighter shades of gold. He took another moment and stared at her. and as they were dancing he realized she was short, he knew but her personality always made her seem bigger than she was, now as they were dancing he realized, he suddenly felt a strange urge to want to protect or hold her tight. But instead he said "Where's Simone?"
she looked at him and replied. "This place is for those who are alive." her hands were cold, and felt different on Clar than Simone's had. He was very aware of them.
He looked closely at her. "What do you mean?"
She stood up on her tiptoes, leaned in, her lips against his ear. "Wake up, Clar," she whispered. "Wake up. Wake up."
-
He bolted up right, he was sweating, and someone held his wrists in an iron grip, he was going to pull away, then he realized who it was. "Jayce?"
"Yes." she was there on the edge his bed looking half awake, her hair messy and she had sleepy eyes.
"Let go of me," he said
"Sorry," she said and let go. "You almost hit me the second I called your name."
"I'm jumpy, I guess."
He looked around the room, by the way the light was coming in it looked to be dawn, it lit the dark room slightly.
"What time is it?"
"Five."
"in the morning?" he said. "Why are you waking me up?"
"What were you having a great dream or something?"
He thought back to it. "I don't remember."
She got up. "One of the Silent Brothers is here. Hodge said to get you up. Actually, he was going to wake you himself but I figured since it's 5 in the morning you would want something lovely to stare at."
"You mean you?"
"What else would I mean?" she said with a smirk.
"I didn't agree to see them."
"Do you want to know where your mother is," she said. "Or no?"
He sighed
"Listen, all you have to do is meet brother Jeremiah," she said. "Besides, he's funny for a guy who never talks."
"Hey, Jayce," he said
"Yeah?"
"You're short," he told her
She looked stunned. "What!?"
"I said your short," he repeated. "Also get out I got to change."
She went out, he laughed to himself, she looked so surprised by that.
After he got changed, Jayce led him to where the Silent Brother was, surprisingly she was fairly silent, he hoped he hadn't made her to upset.
"Listen about what I said about you being short I was just teasing."
"Huh?," she said. "Please you don't think you actually bothered me?"
He supposed even if he had upset her she wouldn't admit to it.
"Yeah, I guess not," he said.
"How tall are you anyway?" he asked. "Isidore and Alec are both really tall."
She turned her head to look at him. "I'm 5'4, not that it matters my size has nothing to do with what I can do."
"I suppose that's true," he said. "Though it's kinda cute."
"What?"
"I said it's kinda cute."
"I am not cute."
She glared at him, he actually found that kinda cute itself, but wondered when he started to think Jayce was cute, when did she start to amuse him more than annoy him?, he gave her a sweet smile at her to add to it.
She turned away and led him to the library.
And when he went in, there was a man in parchment like robes, he assumed that was the Silent Brother, he saw that Church the cat was pacing in circles looking nervous and muttering to himself
"What's with the cat? Why is he pacing?"
"The Silent Brothers make him nervous."
"I think they make everyone nervous."
--
The library was dark, which only made it all more creepy, Hodge got up from the desk and walked up to the Silent Brother
"This," said Hodge. "Is Clarus Fray, the boy I told you about." then Hodge turned to Clar. "Clar this is Brother Jeremiah of the Bone City."
"Hello," was all Clar said, he looked closely at Brother Jeremiah as he approached, he had runes carved into his face, his lips were stiched up, his eyes looked permanently shut. No wonder Jayce called them creepy he thought, he felt chills down his spine.
"I decided that you were right, Jayce. and sent word to the Silent City," said Hodge
"I usually am right," said Jayce.
Hodge ignored her. "However the memories are Clar's only he can decide if he wants to do this."
Clar didn't say anything, Madame Dorothea said he had a block in his mind and he wanted to know why.
"This is Jocelyn's son?," said Jeremiah.
"Yes," said Hodge.
"You knew my mother?" he asked.
"The Clave keeps records.of all Shadowhunters, Dead and Alive," said Brother Jeremiah.
"Well maybe you should find a better way of keep record, cause my mom isn't dead, maybe you would actually know who I'd dead and who isn't," said Clar.
"My father died, I don't need any other way to know that," said Jayce.
"Clarus Fray," said the voice in his head, it was like telepathy. "I am here to help you retrieve the memories that are locked in your head, we can learn much if you agree."
After more talking and discussing, Clar agreed, when Jeremiah was digging through his head, it felt like it would burst, it was painful, just cold and snow.
"That's enough," called Jayce. "It's hurting him now."
"Jayce," said Hodge.
"Look at his hands," she said
Brother Jeremiah had stopped. "The block is too strong for me to do anything here he needs to come to the Silent City, there my brothers can help me figure out what is causing this block."
He looked down seeing what Jayce meant, he had dug his finger nails into his palms and they were bleeding. so more mind stuff he thought.
"I'll go," he said. "To the Silent City, I want to find out what this is."
Jayce stared at him for a long moment.
"ok, I'll go with you," she said.
——————
"I don't like this Clar," said Alec, her and Iz were training.
"You don't like anyone new."
"I don't like change."
"Yeah, I mean Jayce is totally following him around like a Cat."
"That too, what is it with her and wanting to help this boy," said Alec irritated
"I don't know, but the way she looks at him when he isn't looking... I've never seen Jayce look at someone like that," said Isidore.
Alec was not the type who liked new people in the institute, she preferred things to stay the way they are, and this boy was trouble and she knew it, why couldn't Jayce see this?
"Do you the Silent Brothers will actually find anything?" she asked her brother
"Maybe, but maybe not. I find it strange though, this memory block thing, if he's a Shadowhunter like us, than why does he have so much trouble and why can't he remember this stuff?"
"I have no idea, and I don't like it."
"Yeah, you said that."
Alec got lost in thought, and was snapped out of it by Iz using his whip to pull her off her feet.
"Isidore," she hissed
"Hahaha, that's what you get for not paying attention."
She untangled the whip from her feet and went over and jumped onto her brother, they whistled and she gentle pounded her fists in onto his head, they both started laughing.
——————
Joan had been here for a few months now, she was much stronger she had to admit but it was torture, punishment if she messed up, she started acknowledging Lilith as her mother, she would be punished if she didn't for that as well.
Joan already knew how to fight so well now too, some instructer her "Father" picked out drilled stuff into her head everyday, she trained till her body collapsed. Lilith was slowly getting her to use her demon blood more and she could swear her eyes go black every now and then, she wondered how she got here, how things could change so fast. Now she went through cruel and intense training everyday, she sometimes felt she wouldn't live but she always did.
She still didn't know where Clar was, her mom was having god knows what done to her, Valentine came to check on her once, and told her shit about their family and his Circle and about how it all went down, how her mother had fled and left him, couldn't blame her, he's insane.
Apparently her mother had used the help of a warlock to make it seem like Joan was there at home during the uprising, an illusion magic, and her father didn't know until after he had burned the bones of a father and his child, so that everyone thought they were dead. Sick is all she thought, but she saw her mother in a different way now, and though she loved her, she wished she had prepared her and Clar for this, maybe Joan wouldn't be suffering so much if she had.
Joan couldn't sleep so she opened her book about demons and read that, I have this blood in me, i am a monster she thought.
—————
So they headed out and waited for Brother Jeremiah to come and get them, Clar was already feeling the weight of today on him, why does this all have to be so exhausting
"Why do we have to wait for Brother Jeremiah? Does he not want to be seen with Shadowhunters?" He asked
"The Silent Brothers are Shadowhunters," said Jayce. Looking as cool as ever, he was annoyed by this.
"So is he getting his car or something?"
Jayce gave him a grin. "You could say that."
"I'd feel better if Hodge were coming."
"I can protect," She said.
"It's not that I need to be protected," he replied. "I need someone who can help me think through this all."
He realized he hadn't messaged Simone
"Oh! Simone," he said
"No, I'm Jayce," Jayce said. "Simone is the one with the bad fashion sense and kinda looks a chipmunk."
"Shut up, will you," he said. "I was going to call her before I went to bed."
Jayce held her arms up to the sky like it would spilt open and heaven would be there, she was awfully dramatic he thought. "With everything that's going on you are worried about Chipmunk?"
"Don't call her that, she doesn't look like that."
"You're right, I have seen some rather attractive chipmunks," she said. "She is more like a rat."
"She does not look—"
"She's probably at home mooning over Isidore. Just wait for him to get bored."
"Is he likely to get bored?"
"Yes," she said thoughtfully
Maybe Isidore wouldn't, maybe he would see how Simone was and they would start dating but the idea didn't feel right.
He realized he had zoned out while Jayce was talking to him and said "What?" Not so kindly
"If you want my attention so bad surely there are other ways," she said. "That are less embarrassing."
"Sarcasm is the last refuge of the imaginatively bankrupt," he said.
"I can't help it , I use my rapier wit to hide my inner pain."
"Your pain will be outward if you don't get out of traffic," he said
"And here's our ride," Jayce said.
Brother Jeremiah took them to the Silent City in a carriage, though to the mundane it would look like a black car.
--
"So when I get this block out of my mind, glamours won't hurt so much to see through?" He asked
"Yup," she said.
She quotes a Blake quote at him, she loved poetry, she always thought it could describe the way you feel. He said something about a band
"I suppose though, you don't know much about music."
"Not except the occasional cries of the dead."
He gave her a look as if to say are you serious? But he didn't know how serious she was, Jayce had always been able to see ghosts and the cries they made were musical but sad.
"But I thought you knew Piano?"
"Nah, that was just me messing around," she told him. "My father insisted I learn to play at least one instrument, so I decided on the Piano." she had felt strangely drawn to the Piano when she was picking an instrument to learn.
"Your father sounds harsh."
"No, he wasn't at all," she said more sharply than intended. "He taught me everything I know about weapons and fighting, about demons, he taught me ancient languages and lore. He gave anything I wanted. books, weapons, horses, even a hunting falcon at a point."
Clar look to be deep in thought after that, she didn't know why she had even told him this, but it did feel nice to say.
"So you aren't going to tell Hodge about the men?" asked Clar
"no," she replied
"Why not?"
"Cause he'll know I'll want to kill Valentine."
"You want revenge for your father?"
"Not revenge, I want justice, to make it right. Killing ones fellow Shadowhunter is one of the worst crimes."
Eventually she went into explaining why it's wrong. "Downworlders aren't like demons because they are half human, they belong here, where as demons suck the life out of a world and leave it dry, there are many other worlds that have been destroyed by demons."
"There are other worlds?" he asked
"Yeah, in each one something is slightly different, for all we know I could be more attractive in one or I could even be a boy in one. I could be dead in one."
"So these other worlds are dead? Is that what you meant when you said that demons suck the life out?"
"Probably not all, there are most likely some that are still alive, but we have no way to get to them or to really know."
At that moment they were at the Silent City, they followed Brother Jeremiah down the steps, Clar was going on about grave yards and asking if Silent Brothers sleep, which she could only laugh at, he was odd she thought, curious, she liked it.
They saw the statue with the Mortal Cup and the Nephilim motto on it.
"And that is the motto of the Nephilim," she said.
"What does it mean?"
She gave him a grin. "Shadowhunters looking better in black than the widows of our of enemies since 1234."
"Jayce—"
"What it means," said Jeremiah. "The descent into hell is easy."
"Wow, that's so cheerful," said Clar.
They headed to the room where all the Silent Brothers gather for meetings, Jayce stood back as they told Clar to stand on the star and started going through his head.
After a moment of them going through his head, he fell to the floor, for the first time since she could remember a real sense of fear went through her.
She ran to him, and saw his arm was bleeding, she pulled her Stele out and placed the tip against his skin and drew an Iratze. helped him sit up.
"Here, let me," she said.
"Is the part like in the movies and books where you start ripping your clothes up to bandage me up?" he asked
"Geez, if you want me to rip my clothes off just ask," she said with a smirk.
She helped him up and helped him steady himself
"So did you find anything?" she asked.
"I have a name, I guess someone signed my mind," he said.
"What's the name?"
"Magna Bane."
She looked at him thoughtfully for a moment.
"Ok, it's a start," she said.
"Let's go," she said. "I am sure we can find the way out on our own."
"No ," said Brother Jeremiah. "I will escort you out."
He led them out and after a bit they were outside, she looked up to the sky and said. "It's gonna rain."
"What?"
"I said it's gonna rain."
He looked up and frowned, it was cute, wait... Did she just say it was cute? No Jayce no, you aren't gonna think like this.
"Are we gonna take the carriage again," he asked looking at it tiredly.
"No," she said. "I hate them. let's get a cab."

XXIII.
Alastair watched his sister play with her dolls on the rug in the sitting room from the second to last step on the landing. A safe distance away from the fire, her small voice filled the room with color that it sorely lacked. Since their father’s return from wherever it was he had been for the past year, their furniture (what furniture they had) started to disappear.
Cordelia, being only eight hardly noticed. Not when her father’s attention became more of a pressing matter, but Alastair being ten years old and having been the one to mind the estate after their staff stopped showing up and Sona fell into another one her deep depressions, he began to notice.
And he could only suspect one person responsible.
After being satisfied that Cordelia was out of ear range, Alastair turned and jogged up the stairs two at a time. He noted the sconces on the walls were missing along with the bulbs except for one left unprotected and obnoxiously bright without a cover. The rug that ran along the hallway was gone as well leaving the floor bare so that every footstep and noise could be heard. Alastair took a deep breath through his nose and steadied himself.
He’d secretly hoped that his mother would be the one to address the issue, but she hardly seemed to notice the missing things, or if she did, she didn’t feel the need to mention it. The house grew colder and colder by the minute despite his father's enormous presence to fill it.
A part of him chastised himself for not being more elated about his father’s return. The rest of his family members seemed to be, but because of his illusive absence for the past year with no explanation about where he’d gone and the stink of alcohol lingering on his vest, something deep in Alastair’s chest froze towards his father.
Others may be warmed by his false promises and elaborate stories, but he knew the truth. Call it a gift of his, he could see past the pretense his father shoveled in front of everyone to hide his sins.
When he reached the oak door at the end of the hall, with a shaking fist, he knocked.
At first no sound came, so he knocked again; louder this time.
A shuffle could be heard inside. Glass shattering against the floor followed by a string of cursing.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me, father,” said Alastair. “I need to speak with you.”
“What’s this about?”
Alastair placed a hand on the handle. “May I come in?”
“Is this important?”
“It is,” said Alastair lifting his jaw.
“Very well,” said his father.
Alastair turned the knob and pushed his way inside. The bitter, sweet smell of freshly spilt whiskey hit him and burned his eyes. He resisted the urge to cover his nose with a handkerchief.
His father wobbled on his hands and knees attempting to clean up a spill with his pocket cloth, but moving as if he were on a very unsteady ship. Red rimmed eyes looked up at Alastair and a grin curved around his father’s face.
“What is it?” He slurred as he fell backwards against the wingback chair that happened to be the only piece of furniture in the room beside the beverage cart sitting beside the window. “Am I late for supper?”
“It’s nearly noon, father,” said Alastair. “I’m here because it appears that our household items have gone missing.”
“Missing?” Elias squinted up at his son.
“Yes.” Alastair rolled his eyes. “As in gone.”
“Like what?”
“My writing desk, Cordelia’s doll house,” said Alastair. “Mum’s good China, the Tehran crafted weapons, the silver, and where’s the furniture that used to be in this room?”
“Alastair—“
“If you’re pawning our household items to support your drinking then—“ It wasn’t a question of if, nor was it an accusation. Alastair knew the truth, he knew even if he didn’t want to believe it.
“Then what?” asked Elias. “Go on, boy, finish your sentence.”
“You’ll not take one more thing from this house,” said Alastair.
Elias scoffed and attempted to push himself up from the floor when his hand landed on a piece of glass. Elias hissed and fell backwards again onto the floor. “Bloody hell!” He held his hand up, dripping now with fresh blood. “Don’t just stand there. Get me something to stench this with.”
Alastair sighed and walked across the room to the beverage cart. A towel hung from the silver handle, stained with spilt alcohol, Alastair grabbed it and brought it over to his father.
“Where is your steele?” asked Elias as he ripped the towel from Alastair’s hand.
“I don’t have one with me,” said the boy.
“What kind of Shadowhunter doesn’t carry around his steele?”
“I’m nearly ten, father,” reminded Alastair. “I’m hardly a Shadowhunter yet. I can go find yours if you’d like.”
Elias took the towel away from his hand and examined the wound in his palm. “No, don’t trouble yourself. You’ve clearly more pressing matters to attend to. Have you spoken to your mother about these missing items?”
“I haven’t wanted to trouble her—“
“Only me?” asked Elias. “I suppose I deserve that.” He got slowly and unsteadily to his feet. When he stepped backwards a few steps, Alastair had to stop himself from reaching out towards him. He looked like a toddler learning to walk for the first time.
The question dangled on Alastair’s tongue as he watched his father pitch forward and back like an aged ship on angry seas: why did he insist on drinking? When did he become a drunk? Alastair, honestly, couldn’t remember. There’d been a time when sobriety found him for a few months and then he’d be back on the streets again. Alastair was seven years old the first time he picked him up from the porch steps when he passed out before he’d made it inside. The first time, he’d thought it kind of comical, by the third time that week, he found it frightening. And now, he wanted to ask his father why. Why weren’t they enough for him? What was his father chasing that could be found or forgotten at the bottom of a bottle?
Alastair feared he might never know.
_ _ _
The pocket watch ticked inside Alastair’s palm where he sat on the sofa in the drawing room waiting for Cordelia and Lucie to enter through the door. It was five past three; the time they were supposed to return. Questionably, James hadn’t returned either. Alastair knew he should have trusted his instincts over his sister’s word, but he’d allowed himself to feel marginally guilty about upsetting Cordelia.
How could she not understand he was simply trying to do what was best for her? She clearly wasn’t thinking straight— and to be honest she never had when it came to the Herondale boy. It would be over his dead body that he’d ever see James hand-in-hand with his sister.
No, not even then.
Alastair shoved his watch back into his pocket, stood from the chair retrieving his jacket from the arm, and marched towards the door.
“Oh,” said a voice behind him. “Are you leaving too?”
Alastair turned to find Thomas descending the stairs in his full fighting gear. His soft brown hair was combed back away from his face and curling slightly behind his ears. His scarred hands were adjusting the straps across his broad chest that just barely fit across him. Alastair swallowed and quickly averted his eyes to his shoes and then the front door.
With a strange pitch in his voice, Alastair said, “I hadn’t realized you were here.”
“I came with my parents to meet the Herondales,” said Thomas tucking in the extra bit of leather left at the end of his strap. “I thought Christopher, Matthew, and James would be here, but it appears I am at a loss. Miss communication.”
“James is with Matthew on patrol,” said Alastair. “At least that’s what I was told.”
Thomas looked off to the side. “Then I’m sure that’s the truth of it. Where are you headed?”
“I’m supposed to meet my sister at the other Lightwood’s estate,” said Alastair. “She’s running a bit behind so I figured I’d spare her the trouble and catch her there.”
“I’m on my way there as well,” said Thomas. “Would you mind if I joined you?”
Surprised, all words evaporated from Alastair’s mind. When he managed to find them again, a bright color had emerged in his cheeks. “Are you quite sure. I don’t mind finding my own way there.”
“That’s ridiculous,” said Thomas reaching for the door knob. “We’re going in the same direction, not on an outing together, there’s no reason for us to take two separate carriages to the same destination.” Thomas opened the door and without waiting for Alastair to respond, he walked out onto the front steps.
Still slightly shocked, Alastair combed a hand through his hair, picked up his cane, and followed.
“What plans do you and Cordelia have today?” Thomas asked from atop the bench seat of his parent’s carriage.
Alastair, who’d chosen to remain quiet despite the kindness being extended to him, focused on the main road as he answered. “I’m not sure. She mentioned something about going to a park.” He was quite certain that was all that was going on between them. Perhaps his parents conjured him into being kind to the injured, isolated, and troubled Carstairs boy. Perhaps this was some sort of revenge and Thomas had alternative plans of dropping him into the Thames.
“It’s a lovely day for the park—“
“What are you doing?”
Thomas’s eyebrow jumped. “Excuse me?”
“This?” Alastair motioned between them. “This show of uncharacteristic kindness. I can tell it’s not genuine. Who put you up to this?”
Thomas sighed and straightened his shoulders. “I felt badly for the way I spoke to you the other day.”
Alastair had to fight to keep the shock from his face. “You felt bad? Thomas, you have nothing to feel badly about.”
“Perhaps,” said Thomas, “but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how unfair I was being towards you. Do not misunderstand me, this is not me granting you pardon for what you did, but rather an understanding.”
“Why?”
“Because when you created those lies about my father,” said Thomas, “I created lies for him, or what I thought were lies to help repair some of his reputation. My father, who is an upstanding citizen by most regards, and truly a wonderful father, and I was making up all kinds of lies to protect him even though I knew the rumors about him were lies— even though I believed him. I can’t imagine if the rumors were actually true.”
He didn’t have to say it. Alastair had long since learned to read between the lines of what someone was saying to him.
“I don’t need you to feel sorry for me,” said Alastair shortly.
“I don’t feel sorry for you,” said Thomas, never removing his eyes from the road, “and I don’t pity you. I’m merely saying that I understand. In a way, I understand.”
With the wind brushing against his face, Alastair felt a weight of sorts brush off of him.
“I am sorry for what I’ve done to your family and Matthew’s,” said Alastair. “I’ve been minding my father’s reputation since I was a boy.”
“Why did you do it?” asked Thomas. “I know why I fought for my father’s reputation, but yours was an actual alcoholic.”
Alastair bristled. “Alcoholic or not, he is still my father.”
“I’m sorry if I offended—“
“You didn’t offend,” said Alastair. “I suppose I fought so hard to protect him for so long that I simply forgot how to not to. I’d been able to keep up a pretense about my father that at the first sign of trouble, my instinct was to defend him, and the only way I knew how to do that was to put the spotlight onto someone else. If I’m being honest, it wasn’t him I was trying to protect.”
“Yourself?” asked Thomas, as he steered the horse down an empty brick paved street.
“Cordelia,” said Alastair. “I was trying to protect Cordelia. She grew up believing that our father was someone to be admired. She held him on the same pedestal that the Herondale children held their father. I made sure that she never knew about his… illness.”
“Does she know now?”
“She does,” said Alastair. “I couldn’t protect her forever.”
“No,” said Thomas, drawing the horse to a stop at the brick pathway leading to a white gated entrance to a garden. “I suppose you can’t.”
Alastair looked up at the beautiful ivy crested veranda and tried to remember what had caused him to go fetch Cordelia in such a hast. Surely, she was all right with Lucie and if she was in fact with James, perhaps it was high time that she started worrying about her own mistakes. And if she needed him, he would surely be there for her.
“Perhaps I’ll wait here,” said Alastair. “While you go fetch Christopher.”
From the ground now, Thomas looked up at Alastair as he tied the horse to a post. “Would you like me to get Cordelia for you?”
“No,” said Alastair, adjusting his coat. “I shouldn’t trouble her. She’ll return when—“
Before he could finish his sentence, a high pitched scream came from inside the house. Thomas and Alastair both looked in the direction of which it had come and then back at each other.
“Cordelia,” said Alastair as he swung himself down from the driver’s bench as Thomas drew a steele from the strap on his shoulder and whispered its name to it. It burst to light in his hand, accenting his face in a halo of light.
The two men stalked up to the open front door: Alastair at the front, with Thomas trailing closely behind him, both of them scanning their surroundings.
Upon entering the house, it didn’t appear that anything was out of place through the kitchen. There was no sign of a scuffle or demon activity. Even though he didn’t know him all that well, Alastair wouldn’t put it past the odd glasses wearing one to release a demon during one of his poorly executed experiments.
They inched through the kitchen into the short hallway that went through to the sitting room. Attached to the room was a staircase and from the second floor, they could hear an exchanging of voices.
Alastair broke for the stairs at a run with Thomas close behind him. He followed the direction the voices were coming from and turned to the left, stopping at a door that was partially opened. He was seconds from storming it, when Thomas grabbed him by the coat tail and wretched him back.
“Wait,” said Thomas and stepped in front of him, “listen.”
“I wouldn’t try it if I were you,” said a second voice laced with ill intention and centuries of old lies. “Not unless you want me to start breaking bones in their bodies starting with the smallest.”
Thomas grabbed Alastair’s arm and mouthed a name. “Belial.”
Suddenly, the door slammed in front of Alastair and he heard the faint sound of the lock.
“We don’t have much time. I have a very short window back into my realm and we’ll need to be going now. That is if you want your friends to live.”
“Lucie,” said a male voice that Alastair could not recognize. “Don’t go with him. I’m not meant to be here. I’m not meant to be alive.”
“How rude,” said Belial. “Do you have any idea how hard your mother and sister worked to bring you back to life. The least you could do is be more grateful.”
“If I go with you.” The voice was clearly Lucie’s and if Lucie was in there then so would Cordelia. “If I agree to do what you ask, you’ll promise to leave them alone?”
“You have my word,” said a second voice laced with ill intention and century old lies.
Thomas glanced at Alastair and pointed at the medieval spear hanging on the wall in the hallway. Alastair reached up and pulled it carefully from it’s hooks as Thomas took several steps back, picked his foot up, and kicked their way through the lock with his heel in a single, impressive stomp. As Thomas reached for Lucie, pulling her away from the mysterious figure in the center of the room, Alastair threw the spear with every ounce of his might.
He watched it spiral through the air, quick as an arrow, and then stop mere inches from Belial’s chest. A wicked grin curled around the handsome face, as the spear evaporated and then reappeared faster then Alastair could blink.
It was warm, that was the first thing he thought about. Warmth spreading across his back and his chest. His eyes searched the room for Cordelia, but he couldn’t find her face amongst the ones he could not recognize. Everyone stared at him, the pale haired girl Grace and a dark haired boy sitting beside her looked on at him terrified. His eyes drifted to his left where Thomas held Lucie tightly in his arms both gaped at him horrified. He tried to say something, but his lungs had stopped expanding. When he looked down at his chest, he could see where the warmth had come from. The end of the spear protruded from his chest.
“Alastair!” Thomas yelled.
“Go,” he said, as rust flavored saliva dripped from between his lips. “Go now.”
“Release the girl,” said Belial, with his arms crossed and a rather bored expression on his face, “and the boy lives.”
Thomas’s grip on Lucie faltered just slightly.
“Don’t,” said Alastair. “He’s lying.”
“Let me go, Thomas,” said Lucie. “Let me go. He won’t let him die, he won’t if it means he can have me.”
“Listen to the girl, Thomas,” said Belial. “Save your friend and sacrifice the other or lose both.”
Alastair could see the turmoil in Thomas’s gritted teeth and reddened face, still his hands were white knuckled around Lucie. He wouldn’t let her go. Not unless—
Lucie brought her head forward and swung it back against Thomas’s sternum. With a quick maneuver of her feet, she twisted under his grip and shoved him off balance into the wall.
“Let them go,” said Lucie, her hair loose from it’s braid now and falling around her face giving her the appearance of a mad woman. “Let him live and I’ll go with you.”
Belial grinned and with a slight nod of his head, he and Lucie blinked from the room like a flash of lightning. Alastair was released from the spear in the wall and fell crumpled to the ground on his knees. His hands went to his chest to feel for the wound, but while the blood and hole in his shirt were still there, the wound and weapon were not.
A/N: Hope I redeemed myself just a little bit. Next update comes out 12/20

Master Post
Lost looking for something on this blog? This post is for you!
Months listed next to each show/movie/etc. below are those in which they can be found and usually were reblogged a lot.
I don’t regularly reblog all the shows I watch. I usually do “catch-up” reblogs for many of my shows, so expect occasional mass reblogs (especially at the beginning of a new month).
This post is here to give you an idea of where to search for gifs and photos, etc. of a particular subject on my blog. I’m usually pretty good with tagging everything, but in some cases it may be easier to go through the posts by month instead of by the tags.
It’s also my personal guide to what to reblog in the future, so this post will be updated or reposted whenever I’ve had a lot of activity or it’s a new month.

Dani, as the Prince of Darkness, Lance is in the same level of power as the other Princes of Hell (except daddy Luci)?
Do granddaddy Levi likes him or is wary of him?
And if grand-granddaddy Asmo was still alive, would he show interest to Lance like he showed to Max? Or would he see him as threat?
Lance would hate him after knowing all the pain he caused to his dear granddaddy Magnus? And that Asmo almost killed his entire family?
The vocabulary of this ask has me cackling istg.
Lance is extremely powerful for a shadowhunter/mortal (We'll see his powers in lbaf v) but he doesn't have the same powers as a prince of hell (all of them have different powers as we know).
He is not powerful enough to fight a prince of hell because - Lance can only control demons and demonic stuff. To fight a demon (including a prince of hell) you need angelic weapons/powers, which Lance doesn't have. So, we need to keep this boy away from princes of hell actually 👀
Levi likes both his grandchildren. He's the one who paved the way for Lance's birth (by starting the whole chaos with the seashell). Because he knows Lance will wake up Lucifer. Levi just wants some chaos :)
I think Asmo would definitely show interest in all LB grandchildren just to get Magnus' attention. I wish he was alive just for him to pull some shit and completely get obliviated by Magnus and Alec lol.
And of course Lance would hate asmo. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE SNARK?
Asmodeus: My boy. We're family. You are now related to the most powerful-
Lance: I'm already related to Lucifer. No, thanks.

matthew fairchild fic
titled — “i’m sorry”
a story where matthew fairchild goes through the mark stripping ceremony and how his loved ones feel.
ao3 link — https://archiveofourown.org/works/28249212
just imagine the way james is going to be frantically helping the others find a way to curve matthew’s sentence. the whole gang knowing the indefinite torture their friend will face but they’ve come to terms with it, through a lot of tears and private talks. but james, no, james who is and always will be matthew’s parabatai, james the leader, james the stern heroic one, he is still the one still in denial over what will come to life within a few short weeks - the suffering his parabatai would face. it won't happen. no. james won’t allow it, he won’t let it take place, because they were parabatai, they were brothers in arms, brothers at heart and soul who would fight for one another, who would lay down their lives for one another..who wouldn’t give up on one another. never.
unfortunately the day would come when the ceremony would take place, the somber atmosphere that descends over the London conclave and the institute. the lingering anguish distress that that day would bring. the chill stares people would give, the distant gazes in the young ones eyes. charlotte’s constant pacing about the institute, the feeling of not knowing what to do with her - what to do to even soothe her child. her child who she loves too much to let go, who means so much that she would give anything to switch places. heartbreak, the only real anything she could hold onto that day. this would go on all morning, like trance - as if someone had taken over her being and told her that the only way to cope was to burn a hole in the carpet or either to occupy her mind - though the only thing she could do was hold onto the memories she had. the faded and blurred images that skipped along her mind, the way the child with a head of beautiful golden locks would joyously race around in the garden screaming to his heart's content as an older brother playfully slowed down his run to allow matthew to run away. no other pain compared to hers besides that of her sons parabatai and her husband.
henry, oh dear henry, henry who was confined to a chair, the feeling of helplessness knowing the fate that awaited matthew, the memories he would hold dear, the small and tender moments that he shared with matthew that would always burn a gaping hole in his chest. a gaping hole that would never be filled again once sunset had descended upon the day, dulling the skies and greying the clouds - turning the night sky where they would be alive ready to fight demons, to protect each other, to a night they would remember as their greatest failure and loss. the loss of a son, the loss of a child; a child who deserved more in life then what then what such a cruel life could’ve ever given him.
it eventually came to the time of the ceremony, as reluctant as they were, tessa and will would not allow james to watch the horrifying scenes his parabatai was enduring, the sight of matthew in such pain, tessa’s blood boiled yet her skin turned cold, cold to touch, cold to imagine. If they had to and they did, they dragged james kicking with all his force and screaming at the top of his lungs, from the room of the ceremony. the begging of matthew’s name, begging for him to come back, repeated like a mantra, only this one was laced with such agony even angels would not bear to watch the scene. the scratched out voice of james, the ache in his throat from this screams, the screams of pain not only that he felt but what matthew felt. james might say he was selfish for feeling the way he did - lost and in pain he was unable to describe it exactly - receiving comfort from his beloved mother and father whilst matthew was screaming in agony. but the others who looked upon him only knew that the pain he felt now would only lapse into something worse. the only thing that frightened people more than james’s tormented state was the pleads and cries for help from matthew, each plea screamed from him began to sound more like a terrified child then an almost 18 year old shadowhunter - who was wronged by the very elders who should’ve protected him.
the pain each rune stripped from him was worse than the last, a burning fire igniting across his skin, but the only thought, the only fear evident on matthew’s face was the fear of the parabatai rune being torn from him. the very rune that brought him comfort, brought him some semblance of life and happiness - reminding him of one of the few things he held dear and would protect with every breath. james. well he’s done just that, he protected his friends an family, made sure that none of them had to endure what he was facing, the one shred of ease and sureness that crept up on him, bringing matthew his comfort in this hour, that everyone else was safe..even if he was not. if only these thoughts could protect him physically from the excruciating pain he felt; but it didn’t.
sounds of broken screams echoed throughout the hallways, filling cracks and crevices within the ageless silent city. tormented screams and muffled crying was all that hung within the atmosphere, the indistinct sound of james as his knees collided with the harsh ground, the cries that reverberated throughout the room as he beseeched his parents to help matthew, the burning sensation, the aching that spread across his shoulder flared into something indescribable. james had remembered what he said about his parabatai rune, he could always count on matthew to have his back and the funny part, the bitter ironic fact, that caused james to scoff so harshly, was that in the end he couldn’t be there for matthew. even after everything they’d been through, the fights and the arguments, the battles and the scars, he couldn’t protect matthew. but the pain, it wasn’t pain no longer it was anger, hatred that ran so cold within james veins, he imagined himself losing his mind. probably because he had half lost his own soul, his own life, existence, disappearing within minutes and he couldn’t do anything to stop it. he wished this was something he could reach out and grab by his hands and hold on for as long as he could, relying on that bond as his source of security, his sanity and his home.
will and tessa could only kneel by james, the latter holding onto him so tightly she was scared she’d loose him too, not to the rune stripping but to her sons own sanity his own mental well being, she had witnessed will’s demeanour, how he had become more solem and quiet after his own bond was severed, torn apart like it was never there but the feeling lingered like a black cloud shrouding his soul of the memory of the happiness that once laid there. she remembered the days where she would watch as will would turn to his side, half expecting - like a routine - to find jem by his side so he could share his ridiculous jokes. to see this happening all over again, with her own son, was traumatising, she couldn’t bare to see any of the children in pain, but the bygone, detached stare james held engraved itself in her memory.
for matthew, the ceremony itself had lasted hours longer than what the others sitting in the room had imagined. through the bleary, clouded eyes he could make out lucie, lucie herondale, sat there so still she resembled a statue herself, the pale complexion highlighting the streams of reflective water that travelled their way down her cheeks. lucie oh so clever and lovely, lucie a comfort for him, lucie the chatterbox who had such a big heart who didn’t leave him, she had refused, threatened matthew’s own mother that she wouldn’t leave him alone, alone in a room full of arrogance and ignorance.
it wasn’t until he noticed the beautiful red haired girl with a kind smile and attentive black abyss eyes. cordelia who had just been dampening under her eyes with the sleeve of her dress. of course they were sitting together. cordelia and lucie, parabatai themselves, if matthew and the family couldn’t bear to have james in the room so see this event then lucie and cordelia would be there to provide comfort - two people matthew deemed too important to want to ever loose. yet that was happening. cordelia murdered silent prayers; of course the girls wouldn’t leave, they couldn’t leave him - not ever - not in this state. so lucie sat there gazing, though her gaze was more withdrawn even as she smiled, a small smile that gave matthew the reassurance that he was not alone, he never was and never will be. he could see the trembling of her hands shaking with such intensity. all the while cordelia grasped lucie’s trembling hands with her own lacing their fingers together to tell each other lies on how everything would be fine and would go back to normal. there cordelia sat masking a fake gentle smile, for the girls knew that it would be a lie to say it was going to be okay, lucie turned her head away from matthew as cordelia and himself locked eyes, some would dare to say they had their own unspoken goodbye. a goodbye said without words, just that final graceful pull of her lips as matthew closed his eyes and prayed silently, to whoever wanted to listen to his prayer, to anyone who would protect cordelia, lucie, james, his mother and father and everyone else he held dear to him - from thomas to anna to christopher - to watch over them and keep them safe - to never let what was happening to him happen to any of them, ever. and as his eyes slowly opened back up to the dim lit room, he gazed at lucie and mouthed the words ‘i’m sorry’.
two people sat in the audience that day, one a silent brother himself who had been specifically told by matthew not to join in the ceremony, jem. matthew had refused, with every fiber of his being and every last breath he could muster up to scream at him, that he was not to join in, it would only break jems heart. it was in that moment that it took for jem to realise that matthew not only valued but loved too much, his family, to ever see them go through what he did, to live through what he had to undergo. to even join in on the ceremony, jem had only wanted to participate to ease matthew to remind him he had family, to be a person matthew could hold onto, a hand he could squeeze to help dull the pain in any way. but matthew wouldn’t allow it. so magnus had sat with jem, staring at the young boy unable to look away. the memory of this scene would forever be okay on the back of both their minds, a nightmare that would never leave, a plague that would stay with them till the day they passed themselves. that was the day that magnus witnessed what people really are capable of, the torture they were willing to inflict upon an innocent boy, the outdated laws reserved only to torture the purest of hearts and break the kindest of souls. to watch a boy with so much ahead of him in life, a life that could’ve been filled with laughter and joy, stripped away from him in a few moments, the idea of ever having anything or being able to see anyone he loved stripped away, washed away from shore, disappearing into the horizon, sinking to the bottom of the ocean like it had never existed.

Title: A Wonderful Institution Artist: @bidnezz Pairings: Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood, various background pairings Word Count: ~53k Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, discrimination against Downworlders, reference to rape, Clave-typical homophobia, implied character death, minor character death Summary: Magnus doesn’t have time for this bullshit. Warlocks are disappearing in New York City—five people in less than three months—and Magnus is determined to find them and protect the rest of his people from whatever took them. He doesn’t have time for politics, and he certainly doesn’t have time for whatever nonsense the Clave is proposing about marrying a Shadowhunter to a Downworlder as part of the new Accords. He doesn’t really have time for a pretty Shadowhunter who’s surprisingly kind to warlock children, either, but, well, he’s always been good at multitasking.
Alec always knew he couldn’t have what he wanted, but he’s spent the nearly four years since the newly-appointed Consul recalled his parents to Idris without explanation making the best of what he can have. When life suddenly offers up almost everything Alec actually wants on a silver platter, he can’t quite bring himself to trust it, especially when it comes with a million caveats and a side of impending disaster. But he knows how to handle disasters, even if the return of the Circle on top of Clave secrets that could destroy the Accords is way beyond the disasters he’s used to fielding. Hope, on the other hand? He doesn’t know what to do with that.
This fic was created for the @malecdiscordserver Mini Bang 2020.
Chapter Five
To say that Magnus was surprised to get a phone call from Alec would be an understatement, but he wasn’t about to question it when he’d been trying to think of a way to approach the man anyway. So when Alec suggested that it might be a good idea for them to meet in an informal setting, Magnus said he was free now and invited him over to the loft, grateful that he didn’t have the hangover he’d initially been expecting to have this morning, although he was still more than a little bitter about the reasons for that.
He hadn’t even gotten the information he needed from Camille, since his plans to see her had been interrupted by a call from the bouncer at Pandemonium saying that he’d spotted two Circle members at the club. He’d ejected them immediately, with what sounded like help from no few of the patrons, but Magnus went to check things out anyway. If nothing else, seeing that he took this matter seriously would reassure the Downworlders who frequented his club that he took their safety seriously.
As Magnus flipped through his closet, he mentally reviewed what he planned to say to Alexander. Circumstances had changed, but the basic plan was the same: convince Alec that political marriages in general, and this one in particular, were a terrible idea, and then somehow segue into convincing Alec to go out on a date with him immediately after convincing Alec not to marry him, and, you know, this plan was really a lot better when Magnus was convinced the Clave would never approve of Alec marrying him.
Okay. New plan. Convince Alec that he didn’t actually want to be involved in this ridiculous Accords marriage and save everything else for another day. Magnus let out a frustrated breath. It would have to do.
Addendum to the plan, he thought as his hand stopped on a favorite deep plum button-down. Look amazing while executing the plan.
By the time Alec arrived, Magnus was a bundle of nerves. He did, however, look amazing, if he said so himself. Alec seemed to agree, if the way his eyes briefly trailed over the open V of Magnus’s shirt when he opened the door were anything to go by.
“Hello, Alexander,” Magnus said.
Alec’s eyes snapped to Magnus’s face, a hint of surprise in them, as though they’d strayed southward without his knowledge or permission. It was more than a little charming, and Magnus had to remind himself why he’d invited Alec over.
“Thanks for agreeing to see me,” Alec said as Magnus led him into the loft.
“Of course,” Magnus answered. “I have to admit I’m having trouble thinking of a circumstance in which I wouldn’t want to see you,” he couldn’t help adding, and then immediately wished he could take it back. This meeting was for executing the plan, not flirting. No matter how much he liked Alec’s little almost-smile when he did.
“I was just about to mix myself a drink,” Magnus said. “Can I offer you anything?”
“Um, sure,” Alec said. “I’ll have…whatever you’re having?”
Magnus turned to his dry bar and quickly mixed up a couple of lemon drops. It wasn’t what he’d normally drink, but it should be easy enough on the palate of someone who didn’t even have a usual cocktail order.
When Magnus turned back around, Alec was still standing awkwardly in the entrance to the living room. Magnus walked over and handed him his drink.
“To us,” Magnus said, and dammit, he was just unbelievably bad at this whole not flirting with Alec thing.
Alec clinked his glass against Magnus’s and took a sip from his drink. His resulting wince had Magnus reconsidering his stance on lemon drops as a suitable drink for people who don’t normally indulge.
“Why don’t we sit down,” Magnus suggested, leading the way further into the room.
He briefly debated sitting on one end of the couch but decided that would be a bit too intimate for the conversation he wanted to have if Alec took the other end. Instead, he settled in a red velvet armchair that was a wonderful contrast to his shirt.
Alec perched on the edge of the other armchair, looking for all the world like he might bolt for the door at any minute. He took a long sip from his drink, wincing again but looking far more determined after.
“I thought it might be a good idea,” Alec began, “for us to discuss our plans and, um, expectations. For after the wedding.”
And Magnus couldn’t help himself. It was just too good an opening. “Well, I’m not planning to ravish you on our wedding night, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“No! That’s not—” Alec spluttered. “I didn’t mean to— I don’t think you—”
“Unless you ask nicely, of course,” Magnus added smoothly, with an exaggerated eyebrow waggle.
The tension in Alec’s body drained away as he rolled his eyes in a way Magnus might almost have called fond.
“I meant,” Alec said, sounding genuinely at ease for the first time since he’d entered the loft, “that we should discuss our expectations for how we intend to present ourselves as a married couple and our plans for leveraging that to support the Accords and improve the relationship between Shadowhunters and Downworlders.”
Magnus froze, drink an inch from his lips. Of all the possibilities he’d been anticipating, the idea that Alexander might actually believe this marriage could be some kind of real benefit to relations between the Clave and the Downworld was not among them. He took a careful sip of his drink, letting the sour-sweetness roll over his tongue while he reassessed all of his earlier assumptions.
“To be honest, Alexander, my expectations in that regard are that we will be very lucky if the Clave's insistence on marrying two strangers together as a symbol of the integrity of the Accords doesn't result in all-out war.”
Alec frowned. “But we aren't strangers. I don't know you well, but I know that we fight well together and I—I like you, and that’s more than I can say for a lot of people. And we have the chance to do something here, something real. You're the High Warlock of Brooklyn and my parents might officially run the Institute, but I'm Acting Head and actually run it for all practical purposes. We can use those positions to our advantage and maybe really start to change things.”
It was hard not to get swept up in Alec's earnest optimism, the way his face lit up when he was speaking.
“The Clave has been paying lip service to improving relations with the Downworld for centuries,” Magnus said. “And they have proven to be nothing more substantial than so much smoke every time. Do you really believe that if you tried to use your position as Acting Head of the Institute to change the way Shadowhunters here treat Downworlders, you'd actually be allowed to keep your position?”
“I think,” Alec said carefully, “that I'm not in a position to make big changes, but even small changes can make a difference. Even just the fact that we'll be married, a Shadowhunter and a warlock, and people will see it, that could make a difference.”
“Except,” Magnus countered, “that everyone knows this is purely a political alliance. Just another clause in the Accords.”
“It doesn’t have to be,” Alec snapped.
Magnus froze, unable to find words to respond to that.
Alec made a frustrated noise and rubbed a hand down his face. “I’m saying this all wrong.” He looked at Magnus, who was still unmoving and watching Alec warily. “What I mean is, I trust you.” He shook his head. “I don’t know why, but I do. And I think this could be an actual partnership, that we could make a real difference. Together. If you want.”
Magnus forced himself to relax, pushing down the stab of disappointment that Alec hadn’t actually been suggesting their political union could grow into a real marriage. It would have been a foolish and naive suggestion, anyway. But that did bring up an angle of argument Magnus might be able to use to his advantage.
“What about love?” Magnus asked, intentionally vague. He didn’t miss the way Alec’s eyes went wide at the question.
“W-what?” Alec stammered.
“I’ve lived for centuries, Alexander,” Magnus said. “I’ve fallen in love, fallen out of love, broken hearts, had my own heart broken, all countless times. You’ve been alive, what? Twenty years and change? You haven’t had those experiences, and if you go through with this marriage, chances are you never will. Or worse, you will fall in love one day, and you’ll have to choose between keeping the Accords intact and being true to your own heart.”
“You sound like my sister,” Alec told him.
“It sounds like Isabelle is a smart woman,” Magnus said with a shrug.
“What about you?” Alec challenged. “If you’ve been in love so many times, isn’t there just as much chance that you’d be the one having to make that choice?”
“No,” Magnus said. “I haven’t loved anyone in nearly a hundred years, not like that.” No need to mention that he didn’t plan on actually getting married, or that Alec himself was the only person who’d made him feel anything in all that time.
“Then maybe the Seelie Queen was right,” Alec said with a sad smile. “Marrying for love is not something that has ever been an option for me, so maybe we really are a perfect match.” He looked down at his drink. “Except for the part where you’re trying to talk me out of marrying you.”
“Alexander…” Magnus didn’t know what to say. This wasn’t going at all the way he’d hoped. He’d been too obvious in his intent, and now he’d given Alec entirely the wrong impression.
“I guess I’m not what you expected,” Alec continued. “And I get that. You’re not what I expected, either, but…but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
“Look, I know you have some kind of history with my parents,” he continued. “I don’t know what happened between you, and I don’t expect you to tell me, but if that’s what this is about—”
“No,” Magnus cut in. “Alexander, no, this isn’t about your parents. I’m a warlock. I know better than to judge a person on who their parents are. This is between you and me.”
Alec wilted, and Magnus realized that, once again, he’d said entirely the wrong thing. He wished Alec would look at him.
“I think you’re right that we could work well together,” Magnus said, searching for the right words to say what he needed to without revealing too much of himself. “But this marriage is a disaster waiting to happen, as tied up as it is in Shadow World politics. And I don’t want that to get in the way of what we could do together. What we could be.”
Alec looked up, finally, and Magnus could see wariness in his eyes. “Why didn’t you object to me when you had the chance? You and the other Downworld leaders could have rejected me. The Clave would have chosen someone else for you.”
It was all Magnus could do not to break out into hysterical laughter. Now that would have been an even bigger disaster. As much as he didn’t want to marry Alec for the sake of the Accords, it was nothing compared to how little he wanted to be married off to some other Shadowhunter. Or how little he wanted to see Alec married to someone else for the sake of politics.
Magnus realized, with a sudden, startling clarity, that somewhere along the line, he’d already unconsciously decided that if he couldn’t talk Alec out of withdrawing from this marriage, Magnus was going to go through with it.
“Trust,” Magnus answered, not quite able to control the tremor in his voice, “makes you do strange things.”
Alec studied him for a long moment, then said, “Can I ask you something?”
Magnus had a terrible suspicion that he knew what Alec was going to ask, and he wasn’t ready to explain about his split-second decision during the meeting with the Clave, so instead of letting Alec ask the question, he just started talking. After all, if Alec never asked the question and Magnus didn’t say anything actually untrue, then it wasn’t a lie and he didn’t have to feel bad about it.
“The Spiral Council impressed upon me how meaningful it would be to have someone with my position and reputation give the revised Accords their full support,” Magnus said. “As skeptical as I am that the Clave will ever truly see Downworlders as equals, it would be a disaster if the Accords fell apart.”
“That’s good to know,” Alec said, “but that’s not what I was going to ask.”
“I apologize for presuming,” Magnus said. “Ask away.”
Alec ran his tongue along his lower lip, a nervous gesture that nonetheless had Magnus’s thoughts spinning off in a direction that wasn’t at all helpful at the moment.
“Before,” Alec said, “why did you invite me for drinks?”
Magnus blinked. That wasn’t even on the list of questions he might have been expecting. “I thought that would be obvious.”
“Not to me,” Alec told him.
Magnus suddenly found his drink very interesting to look at. “I wanted to spend more time with you.”
“Why?” There was genuine confusion in Alec’s voice.
Magnus sipped his drink, considering his answer. “For nearly a century, I closed myself off to feeling anything for anyone, man or woman.” He looked up at Alec through his eyelashes. “You’ve unlocked something in me.”
Alec stared. “I don’t— Magnus, I—”
Magnus shook his head. “You don’t have to say anything. You asked a question, and I answered it. I don’t expect anything from you.”
“What about living arrangements?” Alec asked suddenly.
Magnus raised his eyebrows, mind struggling to catch up with the sudden change in topic. “I’m not sure I understand the question.”
“After the wedding,” Alec explained. “I can’t invite you to live at the Institute. Accords or not, I can’t imagine the Clave accepting that. But we should live together if we’re going to do this right, at least some of the time. Obviously, I’ll need to stay at the Institute sometimes, because that’s just how these things work, but. Maybe we should think about getting a place together? For appearances sake.”
“I take it my attempts to talk you out of getting married haven’t been very effective,” Magnus said dryly.
Alec shrugged. “Have you even managed to convince yourself?”
It was far too perceptive a question, and Magnus laughed despite himself. “If you decide to marry me,” Magnus said, “you can have my guest room.”
“Okay,” Alec agreed. “That seems like a reasonable choice, if you don’t mind me invading your space like that.”
“I mind it far less than I mind the thought of abandoning my loft,” Magnus told him.
Alec nodded in understanding. “I should probably go,” he said. “I’ve taken up too much of your time already.”
“I wouldn’t have invited you if I minded you taking up my time,” Magnus said. “Stay for one more drink?”
Alec shook his head. “I want to. But there are things I need to take care of at the Institute, and I can’t do that if I have another drink.”
“I suppose I can’t fault you for being responsible,” Magnus said with an exaggerated sigh. “At least let me see you out.”
They moved toward the door, but Alec stopped in the entryway. “I’m not going to change my mind. My reasons for doing this might be different than yours, but they aren’t going to go away just because you have doubts about the Accords.”
“You say that now,” Magnus said, “but just wait until we get into planning this wedding. I imagine even that will be a trial with the Clave involved.”
Alec’s lips twitched in almost the semblance of a smile. “I’m less worried about the Clave than I am my sister. She takes parties very seriously.”
“As do I, Alexander,” Magnus said. “Perhaps between the two of us, Isabelle and I are a match for the Clave.”
“I don’t doubt it for a second,” Alec told him. And then, more softly, “And if you and Iz make that great a team, imagine what you and I can do.”
Magnus found he didn’t have an answer to that.
When Alec returned to the Institute, half-anxious and half-giddy from his talk with Magnus, Jace was waiting for him.
“Something wrong?” he asked. “Don’t tell me that little redheaded mundane you picked up is making trouble.”
“Clary’s still asleep,” Jace told him, “and you know I had no choice but to bring her back here. She’s nephilim, Alec, even if she’s not a Shadowhunter. She wouldn’t be able to bear a rune otherwise.”
“So you’ve said,” Alec said. “If it’s not the mundie, then what’s wrong?”
“Maybe nothing,” Jace said. “Maryse and Robert left word that they wanted to speak with you in the office as soon as you got back.”
“They say why?” He was in no way prepared for a rehash of the conversation they’d already had about his impending nuptials.
Jace shook his head. “Just that they’re being recalled to Alicante, and they need to speak with you before they leave.”
Alec felt only a little bad at his relief that he would finally have his Institute back. He missed his parents when they were away, but he didn’t miss the way they treated him like he was still a child when they were here.
The door to his office was closed when he arrived, so Alec knocked, even as he felt a stab of irritation at needing to. Just one more conversation, he reminded himself, and they’d be out of his hair.
Robert opened the door, a faint frown on his face that had Alec immediately on edge.
“Come in, son,” he said.
Alec was further discomfited when he found his mother seated on one of the armchairs in the middle of the room and his father moved to join her there. Normally, one of them would be sitting behind the desk.
“Jace said you wanted to see me.”
“Yes,” Maryse said. “Have a seat, Alec.”
Alec took one of the remaining seats, facing his parents. “If this about the wedding—” he began.
“It’s not,” Robert interrupted. “At least, not directly, although I suspect that had something to do with the Council’s decision.”
The wariness in Alec’s belly had jumped up to full alarm by this point. “What decision?”
“They’re officially making you Head of the Institute,” Maryse said matter-of-factly.
“They’re—” Alec blinked. “After all this time? Why? Not that I’m complaining,” he hastened to add, “but what about you and Dad?”
“I've been offered a position teaching at the Academy,” Robert said. “One that I’ve decided to accept.”
“And Mom?”
“I already have a job in Alicante,” Maryse said.
“Right,” Alec said. “The secret job you've been pretending not to have for years.”
Maryse sighed. “Things are different now. I wish they weren’t, but with you as Head of the Institute and some things that have recently come to light, we can’t keep you safe from this any longer.”
“Keep me safe?” Alec didn’t know whether to be astonished or angry. “You left. And I was an adult when you did, but Jace and Izzy weren’t. You don’t keep your children safe by abandoning them.”
“It was the only way,” Maryse told him. “You were safer here, even without us to watch over you, than you would have been if we hadn’t gone to Idris. The situation in Alicante was— The entire Clave was in danger.”
“Whatever it is you need to say,” Alec said, “just tell me.”
“What we’re about to tell you stays in this room,” Robert began. “The information is too dangerous to get out, and we don’t know who we can trust.”
Alec shook his head. “That doesn’t work for me. You either trust me with this, or you don’t. If you’re going to give me information that’s important to running this Institute, then you need to trust me to know who to tell and who not to.”
His parents exchanged a glance, seeming to speak with their eyes. Finally, Maryse shook her head and looked away.
Robert looked at Alec. “Valentine Morgenstern is alive. He’s been working to rebuild the Circle for at least five years.”
“Wait,” Alec said. “Is that why the two of you were recalled to Idris after Consul Dieudonné died? Did the Circle kill him?”
Maryse took a deep breath, steeling herself, then turned back to her son. “No,” she said. “Malachi Dieudonné was part of the Circle. He was working with Valentine. Your father and I uncovered his plot and stopped him.”
Alec stared, having trouble taking this all in. “How?” he asked. “How is it possible that the former Consul was part of the Circle, and this is the first I’ve heard of it? It seems like that’s the kind of thing people would talk about, especially if he was executed for it.”
“You have to understand,” Maryse said, “we didn’t know who we could trust. Even now, we aren’t certain how far Valentine’s reach goes. When we uncovered Malachi’s betrayal, we went to the people on the Council we knew we could trust.”
“Our family has been close with the Penhallows for generations,” Robert said, “and your mother and Jia were always close. So that was one person we knew we could trust.”
“And Imogen Herondale’s hatred for the Circle is legendary,” Maryse added. “Valentine had her son killed, so we knew that she would never work with him. But that was it. Out of the entire Council, Imogen and Jia were the only two we could be absolutely certain weren’t working with Valentine, and with the discovery of Malachi’s betrayal, we were very cautious.”
“So, what?” Alec said. “The four of you got together and rooted out the Circle members on the Council?” He was having trouble believing what he was hearing. “How would you even begin to do that?”
Maryse shook her head. “We didn’t have the means to determine who on the Council was working for Valentine, not with Malachi still in charge. It isn’t as simple as that, you have to understand. We were just two Heads of Institute, and we were accusing the Consul of treason.”
“Still,” Alec said, “you were Heads of Institute. Surely, that carries some weight.”
Once again, his parents shared a look.
“We weren’t exactly in high standing in Idris at the time,” Robert said. “We still aren’t, to be frank, but it’s better now that we’ve been working with Consul Penhallow for the past several years. Still, it’s a tenuous thing, and you need to understand why.”
Robert’s face was grave as he continued. “Your mother and I were given the New York Institute under unusual circumstances. It was a reward of sorts for doing our jobs, but it was also an effective banishment from Idris.”
“Banishment?” Alec asked, shocked. “What for?”
“For being members of the Circle,” Maryse answered. “And for recruiting people to Valentine’s cause.”
Alec gasped in a deep breath. It wasn’t possible. He knew his parents could be harsh, and their distaste for Downworlders was obvious even when they made an attempt to hide it, but the Circle wanted to eliminate the entire Downworld, to wipe every vampire, werewolf, warlock, and seelie from existence. That went beyond mere dislike. That was genocide.
“We left, obviously,” Maryse added quickly. “The reason we weren’t executed or imprisoned is that we turned on Valentine and the Circle, and helped the Council take them down.”
Alec stared, horrified. “That— That doesn’t make up for being a part of the Circle in the first place,” he told them. “What Valentine and his followers tried to do was horrific. I can’t believe you were a part of it, even for a short time.”
“Valentine didn’t start out a fanatic,” Robert insisted. “At first, his goals were noble. He wanted to protect Shadowhunters and mundanes from the demonic influence among Downworlders.”
“We did it because we wanted to make the world a better place,” Maryse said. “For our family. For our children.”
Alec shook his head. “No. No, you don’t get to say you did this for us. Your sins are your own. You leave us out of it.”
“Alec—” Maryse started, but Alec cut her off.
“That’s enough. You must have a reason for telling me all this, so get to the point. You aren’t going to be able to justify your involvement with the Circle to me. So, Valentine Morgenstern is still alive, the Circle is still alive and well, and you were involved in some conspiracy to take down the former Consul.
“Wait,” Alec realized. “Did you have something to do with Consul Dieudonné’s death?”
“That’s not important right now,” Maryse said, as good as confirming it. “What’s important is that I’ve been helping Consul Penhallow track the Circle’s movements for years, and I have it from several sources that Valentine now believes the Mortal Cup is somewhere in New York.”
Alec rubbed a hand down his face. “So, you’re telling me that there are going to be Circle members around New York.”
“Around New York, and possibly even already within this Institute,” Robert said.
“We didn’t want to get you involved in this, Alec,” Maryse told him, “but we couldn’t let you take over as Head of the Institute without telling you now that we know Valentine is sending people here to look for the Mortal Cup.”
“All right,” Alec said, needing to focus on what needed to be done and not on his parents’ confession. “Do you know anything about where the Circle thinks the Mortal Cup might be?”
Maryse shook her head. “No. Some of my sources aren’t even convinced the Cup itself is in New York. They think maybe Valentine is only looking for a person who knows the Cup’s location.”
“Then I guess we’ll just have to find the Mortal Cup before the Circle does,” Alec said. Which should be fun on top of everything else he’d been dealing with.
“That would be for the best,” Robert told him, “and if you can keep an eye out for Circle activity in the area and report back to us, too, that would be a great help.”
“To you,” Alec said flatly. “Not to the Council.”
Maryse shook her head. “We still aren’t certain that there are no Circle members on the Council, and we can’t risk Valentine finding out that we have eyes on him. You’ll need to send your reports directly to the two of us, and to Consul Penhallow.”
“Not Inquisitor Herondale?” Alec asked. “Isn’t she a part of this, too?”
“Imogen can be...” Maryse tilted her head, considering her words, “a bit intense when it comes to matters involved Valentine and the Circle. Consul Penhallow has found it’s better to loop her in to information only when we have concrete facts and a course of action planned.”
“Great,” Alec said. “You don’t just want me to keep secrets from the Council, but from the people who are helping you keep your secrets.” He shook his head in exhaustion. “Is there anything else I need to know?”
“There is one more thing,” Robert said. “Valentine’s return and Consul Dieudonné’s betrayal are the reason we pushed for updating the Accords. The four of us spoke about it at length and agreed that the best way to keep from having to face both the Circle and a Downworld revolt at the same time, which there undoubtedly would be if the Downworlders ever found out about the extent to which the Circle has managed to infiltrate the governing body of the Clave, was to solidify our relationship with the Downworld as best as possible.”
“The marriage written into the Accords,” Alec said, understanding dawning. “That’s why you were both so outspoken in your support of it.”
Robert nodded. “And now that Valentine is making a move to find the Mortal Cup, finalizing the new Accords is more important than ever. Which is why the Consul has convinced the Council that your marriage should take place next week, before the signing of the revised Accords.”
“Next week?” For the first time since he entered the office, Alec felt something besides anger. He couldn’t get married in a week. He’d barely even gotten used to the idea that he was supposed to marry Magnus, although admittedly, talking to Magnus had helped. There was something about having someone try to talk him out of a thing that made it so much easier for Alec to recognize why he wanted to do it. Still, a week was far too soon. “I thought we’d have more time. A month or two, at least.”
“Well, it’s not like you’re planning an actual wedding,” Maryse said with a wave of her hand. “This is a purely political transaction. It just needs to be a good show so that the Accords are solid once they’re signed.”
But that was the problem, wasn’t it? That this was a political transaction, but it was with Magnus, and Magnus had said...
“Fine,” Alec said. “Is there anything else?”
“No,” Robert answered. “But if you want to talk more about any of this—”
“I don’t,” Alec said, moving to his desk. “If you don’t mind, I have things to do, and I remember Jace saying something about the two of you needing to get back to Alicante.”
Maryse sighed. “All right, Alec. But we will talk about this again when you’re ready.”
“Don’t count on that being any time soon.”
