been thinking about how you know people make true crime videos describing a event, I’ve been thinking about what if someone did that to Zero Day? Like making a video talking about the case as if it actually happened, I don’t know seems cool, like a mockumentary of sorts

TERRORGRAM - Filmmaker Stuart Ortiz discusses his new film, STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, having its World Premiere Sunday Sept 22nd, 2024 as part of Fantastic Fest taking place in Austin, TX.
Tumblr media
In filmmaker Stuart Ortiz’s new film, STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, the San Bernardino County authorities were faced with one of the most bizarre crime scenes they’d ever encountered in July of 2010. Alerted by a concerned friend, local police arrived at the victims’ home, and the murders they discovered shook them to the ground. The crime scene showed ritualistic aspects, and quickly, one of the detectives recognized a symbol painted on the ceiling in the victims’ blood linking back to a serial killer they’d chased in 1995, before the killer seemingly took a 15-year break. Infamous serial killer named Mr. Shiny has returned. Taunting the police with notes, they are in a race against time to catch him before time runs out and he completes his deadly quest.

Stuart Ortiz is an award-winning writer, director, producer and editor who co-wrote and co-directed the 2011 cult horror film, GRAVE ENCOUNTERS, as well 2012’s GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2 and EXTRATERRESTRIAL released in 2014. He co-wrote and produced 2016’s IT STAINS THE SANDS RED, which won "Best Film, Midnight Extreme" at SITGES that year. He is the recipient of two Golden Trailer Awards for his work in film and television marketing. Ortiz now skillfully applies the style of a true crime documentary to weave a hypnotic tale with STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, making its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest Sunday, Sept 22nd, 2024. Stuart and FERAS Magazine's executive editor Joseph B Mauceri spoke in advance of the film’s Premier.

"A film crew ventures into the forest in search of the musical 'Jersey Devil.'"
Released 1998
Hey what the fuck? I have such mixed feelings for this one. NGL, I did have to look this one up to make sure it was a mockumentary and not an actual true crime documentary, so in that regard it is extremely well done. There is no gore and no jump scares, and in fact most of the movie has none of the hallmarks of a horror film. It is simply a mockumentary of murders that questions that the actual guilt of the person convicted for those murders. That is, until you get absolutely blindsided by the ending. It's the sort of ending that makes me want to watch the whole thing over again to see if there were any hints of it that I had missed on my first watch. I will not be doing that, however. The single driving factor in this movie that kept me watching till the end was the same morbid curiosity that you might experience from true crime: who actually committed these murders? With that question answered, there would be very little value in a rewatch. This would be a good movie to watch if you enjoy cryptids and true crime, but aren't looking for anything scary.
Spookiness: 1/5
Effects: 5/5

Hobbit cannibals: THE CANNIBAL IN THE JUNGLE (Simon George, 2015)
As a general rule, I am not a big fan of “mockumentaries” – if you’re making stuff up, then why not just describe it as fiction? And if you are a channel like Animal Planet which makes factual documentaries about (real) fauna and flora for its seventy million viewers, it seems at least deceptive if not actively fraudulent to start showing made up stuff as if it is a “documentary”. This is not the…

so many times i had american vandal recommended to me. and never once did anyone say to me that lou wilson is there. sold brb
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THE PROPAGANDA IS WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i actually watched american vandal before i watched d20 so when i was rewatching it and saw Lou i was like HUH
for anyone who doesn't know, american vandal is a comedy mockumentary series on netflix that's meant to parody true crime documentaries, but it instead focuses on a high school and a student who's wrongfully accused of a prank. Here's the trailer to get a sense of the vibe.
it's so funny but its SO good i feel like most shows can never accurately portray teenagers but this show GETS IT, social media and all, and it even touches on things like how the public school system unfairly judges students, plus the inherent moral complications that comes with true crime.
Also, Christa Carlyle is Kipperlilly. Love those blonde class presidents who constantly post about unfairness and inequality at school.

EDIT: If I've tagged you, there's absolutely no pressure to do this, or to even fill in all the sections. I'm sorry for not adding this sooner.
9 people you want to get to know better!!
Tagged by @likemmmcookies : D
Favourite colour: oscillating between maroon and navy
Currently reading: The Nameless Ones by John Connoly (it's a crime thriller that I started reading for the incidentially gay assassins and it's great. But if you've got dwarfism, just be aware that one of the only characters who has the same condition feels really 'othered') & To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara (tragic, self-desctructive gays so far. Lots to say about class, colonialism and self-identity. There's a revolving door of MCs but I have to say this woman does unlikable main characters very well).
Last song: Anon -Dorian Electra (this artist would be a national treasure if America wasn't such a treasure trove of bigotry)
Last series: What We Do in the Shadows (mockumentary-supernatural-queers needs to be its own genre)
Last movie: The Killer Nurse (My mother and I like to watch true crime during lunch, okay?)
Working on: Various sewing projects that I'll only really finish after uni (which I am currently procrastinating on) this year.
EDIT: If I've tagged you, there's absolutely no pressure to do this, or to even fill in all the sections. I realise now that I've just dumped a truckful full of pressure on people, when being here should be a fun experience. I'm sorry for not seeing this sooner. Have fun out there!

listening to missy: the broken clock… i’ve missed you, doccy who mindfucks. Love not knowing what the fuck is going on. meta-museum-murder-mystery-mockumentary… something about moving statues in manhattan… late night true crime talk show… atrocious accents that are aware of how bad they are. the best part so far is missy calling herself a detective from ‘scotland yard, scotland’ exactly how twelve would in mysterio. something something the only person i’ve ever met who’s even remotely like me. they share the same sense of cheesy boomer humour

The Monument Mythos by Alex Casansas (also known as M4NTICOR3)
This is another gem that cited alongside Midwest Angelica as a fantastic series, at least if you were to ask those on R/AnalogHorror.
We are back to series’ now. This week’s concept/theme: Historical conspiracy/multiversal horror.
Have you ever been afraid of seemingly still objects rather than typical monsters? Have you ever thought that possessed/corrupted/evil-by-design architecture or artwork as an underrated source of fear?
Or, simply: Do you want to see someone turn your favorite monuments or sites into something scary?
It’s important to note that—since I’m sure many are sick of it thanks to a few key studios—the multiverse is a large part of the story. It primarily focuses on two mingling universes/realities of US history, but one reality wound up getting its own sort of spinoff known as “the Nixonverse”. I can’t spoil that because I haven’t seen it. If you’re tired of multiversal narratives, this may not be for you, but if any of the other qualities below jump out enough to cancel this out, that’s also good!
As for the main series, here’s what I’ve got in terms of spoiler-free qualities:
• Multiversal narrative, it’s introduced immediately and has a sort of background importance until a few key events.
• Historical conspiracy, if you’re like me and are really into history and especially historical conspiracies, you’re likely to enjoy this one.
• Alternative history, again, sadly, the main focus is on US history and monuments, but as I stated above, if you’re into history this might be worth a try.
• “Mockumentary”, the majority of the series is done in the format of a historical documentary or in animations explaining how historical machinery worked. You also have interviews and other personal accounts involved as well to prevent it from getting too repetitive.
• Non-possessed-evil object, if you’re like me and often get excited to see cursed objects, only to learn that they’re actually just puppeted by a demon, the main threats you see in the series ought to be pretty refreshing.
With the main ones out of the way, let’s get to the more analytical part:
The Monument Mythos is a series that is very unique to me. With all of my interests and with how well the story is executed, this should have been my favorite, but Vita Carnis holds that title instead by a landslide. Because while I honestly see very few faults with it and while it has a lot of scary elements, it just doesn’t scare me to the same visceral point as Vita Carnis does.
When I say unique, I say that, at least for the first couple seasons of Monument Mythos, the scary parts have a different feel to them. They’re scary, but in a different way than what you see in a lot of other horror.
What M4NTICOR3 does really well in this series is create that all-around threat, but use the historical-documentary-framing to almost make it feel like a true crime documentary with supernatural elements. The feeling of fear that I got in this series is closer to the feeling I get when I learned about Jack the Ripper, for example, or the Keddie Cabin murders. The fear is there, and it’s obvious to the audience members as they’re watching, but it’s almost a sort of fascinated fear or a melancholic fear. I strongly suspect that this is because of the format. Either you’re gaining the knowledge of what’s happening via reading text or watching animations, or you’re being told via a narrator using the mist neutral voices, even those doing direct interviews. Almost every voice in this series is so nonchalant and accepting that every episode feels downright eerie to watch.
What adds to this as well is both those supernatural elements and the fact that it’s made clear right away that this is an alternate version of the world, particularly the United States. So on top of this, the audience also ends up trying to imagine what living in this world would be like, which M4NTICOR3 assists in by including those interviews from people who directly experienced these events. Again, using voices that demonstrate that they are used to experiencing these things.
For a series that constantly explains how it works, the Monument Mythos is a difficult series to fully explain/articulate. And I can only respect M4NTICOR3 for how well they made it.
As always, it’s on YouTube for you to watch if any of this is intriguing to you. M4NTICOR3 is also fantastic at organizing the channel/series.
As for next week…

EXCLUSIVE: Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Timothy V. Murphy (Appaloosa) and Bruce Greenwood (The Fall of the House of Usher) have boarded The Fabulous Four, a new comedy from Bleecker Street, which has entered production in Georgia under an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA.
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, and Megan Mullally, as previously announced. Ralph takes over the role of Sissy Spacek, who was attached as of last fall but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Bleecker Street nabbed North American rights to the pic last October and will release the film in U.S. theaters in 2024. UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and brokered the deal for U.S. rights, with Sierra/Affinity repping international sales.
Written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, the Cannes prize-winner best known for her Kate Winslet pic The Dressmaker, the film follows three life-long friends (Sarandon, Mullally, and Ralph) who travel to Key West, Florida to be bridesmaids in a surprise wedding of their college girlfriend Marilyn (Midler). Once there, sisterhoods are rekindled, the past rises up again in all its glory, and there are enough sparks, drinks and romance to change all their lives in ways they never expected.
Richard Barton Lewis’ Southpaw Entertainment is producing alongside Lauren Hantz of Hantz Motion Pictures.
An icon of stage and screen, Ralph has won an Emmy and numerous other accolades for her portrayal of kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary, the ABC mockumentary that has emerged as one the most popular scripted series on linear. The show, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, was renewed for a third season in January but only recently returned to the writers’ room, following the conclusion of the WGA strike. Otherwise perhaps best known for her Tony-nominated turn as Deena Jones in Broadway’s Dreamgirls, Ralph has also been seen in Mistress with Robert de Niro, To Sleep with Anger with Danny Glover, The Distinguished Gentlemen with Eddie Murphy, and Sister Act 2 with Whoopi Goldberg, along with such series as Moesha and Ray Donovan.
Most recently recurring on Law & Order: Organized Crime and ABC’s The Company You Keep, Murphy previously reprised his role in Uni’s comedy MacGruber on the same-name Peacock series. Other recent credits for the actor on the TV side include S.W.A.T., Snowpiercer, Westworld, and True Detective, to name just a few. Additional feature credits include In Full Bloom, The Lone Ranger, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
Greenwood puts in a stellar turn as Fortunato Pharmaceuticals CEO Roderick Usher in Netflix’s Edgar Allen Poe-inspired miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher from Mike Flanagan, which bowed on the platform earlier this month. He also recently starred in the Fox medical drama The Resident, which ran for six seasons, and will soon appear in fantasy pic The Invisibles with Tim Blake Nelson and Gretchen Mol, among other projects.
At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Bleecker Street nabbed U.S. rights to James Hawes’ One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins, and the starry British comedy Fackham Hall, which goes into production next year. The company also locked down UK rights, alongside Elysian Film Group and Anonymous Content, to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Upcoming releases include the Meg Ryan-helmed rom-com What Happens Later, coming to theaters November 3, which she leads with David Duchovny, and Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson’s Waitress: The Musical, out December 7 with Fathom Events.

TV SHOW REVIEW: American Vandal
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"Sometimes, the truth is more complicated than a simple yes or no."
Tumblr media
American Vandal: a mockumentary series on absurd yet serious crimes; a satirical depiction of true crime.
The first season weaves a mystery of 'Who Drew The Dicks' as it explores the story of Dylan Maxwell, unreasonably accused of vandalising 27 teachers' cars and expelled as an undebatable form of retribution. Dylan's story, while hilarious and crude, is told amazingly well through the use of interviews, 3D graphics, and raw footage from phone screens. It's a perfect enactment of what a documentary would be like if it was made by two high schoolers (the characters of Peter and Sam, who are played outstandingly well by Tyler Alvarez and Griffin Gluck).
Season two takes a different approach. Where season one is set in Peter and Sam's own high school - Hanover High, season two moves away from their home setting to Catholic school St Bernadine. It follows the aftermath of three faeces-related crimes committed by an anonymous person dubbed 'The Turd Burglar'. Moral ambiguity and cruel pranks (much like in season one) meets an important message about online presence - a message that differs from the one we've heard before.
The brilliance of this show lies in its ability to completely capture your attention through its unique take on a docu-series, and the way in which it allows your imagination to run wild with theories. It has you sitting on the edge of your seat, beckoning to know the truth behind the mysteries and questioning everything you thought you knew with more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel. With witty writing and hilarious plotlines, American Vandal is definitely one to add to your watchlist if you are in need of an entertaining show to binge-watch.
