TERRORGRAM - Filmmaker Stuart Ortiz discusses his new film, STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, having its World Premiere Sunday Sept 22nd, 2024 as part of Fantastic Fest taking place in Austin, TX.
In filmmaker Stuart Ortiz’s new film, STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, the San Bernardino County authorities were faced with one of the most bizarre crime scenes they’d ever encountered in July of 2010. Alerted by a concerned friend, local police arrived at the victims’ home, and the murders they discovered shook them to the ground. The crime scene showed ritualistic aspects, and quickly, one of the detectives recognized a symbol painted on the ceiling in the victims’ blood linking back to a serial killer they’d chased in 1995, before the killer seemingly took a 15-year break. Infamous serial killer named Mr. Shiny has returned. Taunting the police with notes, they are in a race against time to catch him before time runs out and he completes his deadly quest.
Stuart Ortiz is an award-winning writer, director, producer and editor who co-wrote and co-directed the 2011 cult horror film, GRAVE ENCOUNTERS, as well 2012’s GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2 and EXTRATERRESTRIAL released in 2014. He co-wrote and produced 2016’s IT STAINS THE SANDS RED, which won "Best Film, Midnight Extreme" at SITGES that year. He is the recipient of two Golden Trailer Awards for his work in film and television marketing. Ortiz now skillfully applies the style of a true crime documentary to weave a hypnotic tale with STRANGE HARVEST: OCCULT MURDER IN THE INLAND EMPIRE, making its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest Sunday, Sept 22nd, 2024. Stuart and FERAS Magazine's executive editor Joseph B Mauceri spoke in advance of the film’s Premier.

Learned something valuable about myself this evening: I can tolerate/enjoy just about anything in terms of horror, but I have very little tolerance for horrible mundane true crime-style stories. They aren't scary - I love being scared by fiction - but they're upsetting.
Tonight, I watched Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire, which is a horror film in the form of a (fictional) documentary about a serial killer. It was very good! The story is compelling, the acting is excellent, and the cosmic horror elements, when they appear, are well and subtly done. I think it's a good movie and would recommend it.
I also found enough of the murder scenes upsetting enough that I'm skipping the 9 o'clock film to go back to my hotel and watch something fluffy. Which is, again, a sign of the film's quality.
I would rather watch a monster eviscerate someone than watch a regular human graphically shoot someone in the head, is the thing.
