Hey there lovelies. This week has already somehow been pretty crazytown on my end, how bout yours?

I know a lot of you are going through it. I am so sorry it's so hard. This is just a gentle reminder that you are allowed to be upset, and you are allowed to be stressed or depressed. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and it's okay to not be okay for a while. Please just remember that even when the darkest days are here, there is ALWAYS some light. Find some things that bring small bits of light to your life-- maybe a walk, or a special treat, a hug from a friend on or offline, or taking a moment out of your day to give someone a compliment -- whatever it is that brings that dopamine to your brain. Little things help train our brain to know that good things CAN happen, so exposing yourself to those little things day by day can help build what's sort of like a good things muscle. As more and more happen, the rough times become easier to tolerate because they are sprinkled with good things.

You are so very strong, and I know you can get through whatever you are going through. I know you don't feel like it, but you are, even when you feel your lowest. I believe in you, the crew believes in you, even if we've never spoken, we want you to be okay, okay?

Please take care of yourselves lovely, you make the world a better place by being here <3

Welcome to our third edition of the King Liam Appreciation Week!

Last year, we got an absolutely incredible response, with around 90+ pieces dedicated to Liam! Whether or not we reach that number this year is immaterial - what we know is that the love for the character still remains! 🤗

Day 1 is dedicated to Liam's favourite sweet, Baklava! That honey-sweet, decadent Mediterranean dessert was established as his favourite food item long before he even appeared in a book, when his elder brother Leo laughed over his childhood obsession for it in RoE Book 2. We see in person how much he loves it in TRR3 and TRH, and it's been associated with him since!!

Our other theme is Throwback, which is pretty straightforward. We'd love to see your past work on Liam, and if you like you can even reblog them with a note about your process of creating it!

Any content is welcome!! Just make sure your work centers Liam, and presents a positive depiction of him. Fic, art, meta, headcanons, edits, icons, interactive media, even simple character appreciation posts!! We also accept WIPs, so if your piece isn't entirely complete by the end of the week, fret not - you can still send us the WIPs!

The themes are simply inspirations. If you bring a piece for one of the days later, it's entirely okay...just make sure you tag the posts with the day you meant it for! We will always be keeping a bonus week in case you couldn't complete the piece during the week itself, so our official deadline for pieces will be Dec 1st!

To celebrate Ace Week, October 20 – 26, 2024, here's the Asexuality 101 post I shared with coworkers, this year.

Feel free to share it with other folks who you’ve had to explain Asexuality to, from scratch. Again: it’s just the basics.

Statistically, with around 1% of the population identifying as it, most of the people reading this article aren’t asexual, and they probably don’t know anyone who identifies as asexual, and if they do, they probably don’t know them closely enough to know anything about their sexuality—especially if it’s somehow defined by there being… less of it… or is it none of it? It’s all kind of confusing.

So, what’s there for you to be ‘aware’ of on Ace Week? Lots. Maybe even everything.

A sky full of more than just stars.

This (above) is a picture of the night sky over Alberta at around 9 PM, this Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024. It’s probably nothing like the night sky you've seen before, because it’s how the sky looks when seen through the microwave spectrum.

You’re used to seeing a sky that looks like this (above). This is the same bit of sky, as it appears in our “regular” spectrum of visible light. But notice how the microwave view of the sky reveals an entirely different sky, where nearby space is suddenly far more hectic, complicated, and full. It’s a sky full of things your ordinary eyes can’t see or measure. That’s what happens when you look at the exact same thing through a different lens¹.

Most of us understand sexuality along a spectrum of who, or which. Who are you sexually attracted to? Which genders are you attracted to? One, any, all? Asexuality looks at the same world, but measures things differently, instead of who or which, it asks how much, or when. How much sexual attraction people are capable of experiencing, and in many cases, where, how, or when that attraction can be experienced.

Asexuality is a bit more complex than just, “people who don’t feel any sexual attraction.” Some asexuals fit that definition, but they’re the very-visible minority. Just like the microwave-view of the sky wasn’t solid glowing purple, asexuality manifests in a variety of forms. The less-visible majority² of people the asexual spectrum are sometimes labelled as demisexual: people who experience limited or very selective primary sexual attraction, usually based on an emotional bond.

Asexuality isn’t a broken or underdeveloped expression of cisgendered heterosexuality. Asexuality lines up and coexists with the who-or-which so-called “regular” sexual spectrum. There are gay asexual people, bi demisexual people, asexual or demisexual lesbians, transgender demi people, and hetero-oriented aces. (Notice how in the microwave image of the sky, the same stars are still there, and the Milky Way is where it was.) This is why you might hear about the many micro-labels within the asexual community, as people develop ways to quickly communicate how they inhabit their place along the asexual spectrum.

“Back up a bit, primary sexual attraction?”

Wikipedia defines primary sexual attraction as “the type of attraction that is based on immediately observable characteristics such as appearance or smell, and is experienced immediately after a first encounter.” People on the asexual spectrum experience little to none of this, and people who identify as demisexual often explain the attraction they feel as being above primary sexual attraction. It’s complicated, and more than we can cover in a single post. What’s important to know is that asexuality is a big, big topic because it covers as much ground as the allosexual spectrum you’re used to.

“Hold on, Allosexual?”

Asexual people (asexuals, aces, etc.) have our own jargon, because of course we do. One of those words is allosexual. From the greek word állos, which sometimes translates to ��other”. Allosexual or others-sexual. People who are attracted to other people. It’s shorter than saying, “people who aren’t asexual,” and politer than the other words we might use to describe you.

So, what now?

Probably nothing. As exciting as it is to know there’s a whole other spectrum out there (and spoiler, there are many spectra, there’s also a romantic-attraction spectrum) the reality is, it’s small. In the few surveys that have been conducted, it seems as though only about 1% of the population identify as asexual in any way. (There are probably a few more of us, living with identities we were assigned by the world we grew up in.) For the time being, this may just be a neat-to-know thing, and a prompt to go visit your local observatory, to see a microwave telescope.

But for a few of you, it might be the beginning of a journey of self-discovery. You may have learned a few important new words here, or found a new way of seeing things that explains why you are the way you are, or why someone you care about is the way they are. If so, please be gentle. Asexuality is a large topic being explored and lived by a small community, most of whom are still in the middle of figuring out what this all means for us.

One of the safest places to start is Angela Chen’s gracefully-written book, Ace: What Asexuality Reveals about Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex. Written by a journalist, it gets into self-discovery, implications for partners, the medicalization of asexuality & the ways people try to “cure” us, and it even gets into the complexities of being asexual inside of a cultural context that might not leave room for asexuality.

From there, have look around the oldest Asexual community, the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, AVEN, or carefully look through your social networks’ asexual or asexuality tags (1% scales up well in a large community, but always remember you're on social media).

You’re not alone, you’re not “broken”, you’re not “delayed”, you’re not heartless. You’re part of a sky full of more than just stars.

Footnotes:

¹ Yeah, yeah, technically, microwave and visible light aren’t separate spectra, they're just different subsections of the bigger electromagnetic spectrum, and space is full of stuff that emits energy all across the full electromagnetic spectrum all at once. Sort of like how we're all a little bit of everything on the entire spectrum of human-expression, just in different proportions. But wow, if you thought this was already a convoluted post, can you imagine what a post that used that model would have looked like? So, let’s all agree to stick with the more casual way of describing electromagnetism. All least until after Ace Week, so we don’t wreck the mood.

² Demisexuals and other variants of asexuality are underrepresented for a number of reasons: it can be too complicated to talk about, it can be exhausting to defend your place on the spectrum, or you might not even see yourself as demisexual because your relationship feels “ordinary enough”. This is why we have Ace Week. It's an opportunity to let people know there are other words to explain how they feel, or how they express their complicated sexuality.

I was 21 when I realized I was “behind schedule” getting into “the dating thing.” Even back then, I thought of it in abstract terms like ‘dating’ or ‘being in a relationship’, I didn't personify it in any way, using words like ‘meeting a girlfriend’, or ‘becoming a boyfriend’. (1992.)

I was 37 when I realized there was clearly something off about me, and accepted that—for whatever reason—I didn't do relationships, and I decided to just focus on my career, and hobbies, and and and. (Late 2008.)

I was 51 when I learned there were words for what I was: Asexual and Aromantic. (2022.)

I was 52 when I started coming out as AroAce (2023).

Boy, 12, is referred to counter-extremist Prevent officers by his own school after declaring there 'are only two genders' and 'I'm gay not queer'

A 12-year-old schoolboy has been investigated by counter-extremism officers after he declared there 'are only two genders'.

The child made a video, posted online, in which he also stated: 'There's no such thing as non-binary'.

And in response to school bullies who mistakenly believed he supported transgender ideology, he said: '[I'm] gay not queer.'

Originally a homophobic slur, trans activists claim the word 'queer' now describes people who don't adhere to ideas of sex or gender.

But the school told the boy's mother they would refer him to Prevent, the Home Office programme that attempts to stop people becoming terrorists, amid fears he could be at risk of being radicalised by the far-right.

The Mail is aware of the boy's identity but has agreed not to disclose it, and has also viewed the social media posts.

The boy's mother was visited by Prevent and Northumbria Police officers this week, in a meeting she described as 'an interrogation'.

Officers listed a string of allegations to illustrate the boy was at risk of radicalisation.

The boy's mother said: 'We think that he was targeted as the children believe gay people agree with trans ideology.

'He made a video which I uploaded to YouTube where he said there 'are only two genders' and 'I'm gay not queer'.

'The school phoned up and were incensed by it. They said that they would refer him to Prevent for that video.

'They said that he was at risk of radicalisation - not that he had been, but was a risk when he gets to 13 and is entitled to his own social media accounts.

'There was a risk he would fall in with Far Right groups.'

She said counter terror officers - who visited the family home - raised concerns over the fact that her son, who is Jewish, harboured extremist views on account of his response when asked if there were any groups that shouldn't exist.

She said her son responded that 'Hamas (the Gaza-based terror group) should be wiped out'.

Further fears were raised over comments he made to school bullies, stating he wanted to 'exterminate' them.

He is said to have made the remark in relation to appalling racist slurs from classmates.

In a letter to the school in South Tyneside - seen by the Mail - his mother detailed how he was subjected to vile verbal abuse and Nazi salutes.

Prevent officers also suggested the boy had an unhealthy interest in weapons on account of another online video - again uploaded by his mother - which showed him demonstrating a toy crossbow bought from English Heritage, she said.

English Heritage describes the 'best seller' item as 'completely harmless but lots of fun'.

The mother said the school and Prevent officers were guilty of double standards, claiming anti-Semitic incidents at the school were not dealt with in the same way.

She said: 'We sat down with the Prevent officers and there was an interrogation - they had an attitude of 'we'll ask the questions'.

'We were asked if we monitored his social media and what songs he listens to.

'They said there was a whole series of things he had been accused of.'

The police response was criticised by free speech campaigners who rebuked officers for 'wilfully missing the target'.

Harry Miller, chief exec of Fair Cop, said: 'His views on gender are as far away from terrorism that it's possible to be.

'They are views that are held by the majority of people in Britain and don't even get into the foothills of terrorism.

'You couldn't call it criminality, let alone terrorism. There is a difference between bad behaviour and terrorism.

'This is another instance of the police wilfully missing the target because hunting down school children is easier than confronting actual terrorists.

'Fair Cop will continue to stand between these idiots and the public until they stop behaving like the woke, cowardly Stasi they have become.

'The Home Office needs to get a grip. Sack every complicit Chief Constable.'

Kate Barker, chief exec of LGB Alliance, said: 'If it's a sign of radicalisation to say you don't like being called 'queer' then according to our research, 94 per cent of LGB people can expect a knock on the door from counter-terrorism officers.

'We applaud this young boy for standing up for his beliefs, and we condemn the teachers and police who think it's wrong to abhor this horrible slur.'

The Prevent strategy was introduced by the Government in 2011 as part of a bid to tackle terrorism through early intervention.

According to the latest Home Office data there were 6,817 referrals to Prevent in the year ending 31 March, 2023 - the figure was up 6.4 per cent on the previous year.

A joint statement from Northumbria Police and Counter Terrorism Policing North East read: 'We are unable to discuss individual cases, or identify anyone who may or may not be the subject of a Prevent referral.

'All referrals are treated in the strictest confidence and will always prioritise the safety and welfare of those concerned.

'Prevent is a multi-agency approach to safeguarding and supporting those most at risk of radicalisation through early intervention.

'It seeks to protect young and vulnerable people against all forms of extremist activity, regardless of ideology.'

South Tyneside Council declined to comment.

Apparently, there's so few burglaries and murders that police have nothing better to do than harass children expressing completely true, mainstream and reasonable positions, and treat them as extremists deserving of counter-terrorism intervention.

Nineteen Eighty-Four was not supposed to be an instruction manual.

There are a number of threats to the LGBTQ+ community around the world. And with Pride Month on the horizon, federal law enforcement in the US is urging people to be more alert.

Authorities warned US citizens abroad to "exercise increased caution". "Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists, including Pride celebrations," a warning issued by the state department said. The advisory came on Friday, a week after a similar alert issued by US law enforcement agencies. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said: "Foreign terrorist organizations or supporters may seek to exploit increased gatherings associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month." Although no specific gatherings or locations were mentioned in the warnings, the law enforcement agencies noted that messages from the Islamic State (IS) group distributed in English in February 2023 included rhetoric against LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and intersex) events and venues.

Being concerned about anti-LGBTQ+ violence is not paranoid even during "normal" times. Remember the Pulse massacre in 2016?

During Pride Month in June 2016, a man inspired by IS ideology shot dead 49 people and wounded 53 more at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The FBI and DHS warning also noted that three IS sympathisers had been arrested for attempting to attack a Pride parade in Vienna, Austria in 2023. The Counter Extremism Project, a New York-based non-profit group, noted that anti-LGBTQ ideas had been taken up by both Islamist and far-right extremists. "It is no surprise that neo-Nazis and jihadis often express mutual admiration for their shared anti-gay visions," Mark D Wallace, the project's chief executive, said in a statement.

The narrowly averted attack on a Pride march in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 2022 was a close call. A heads up by a concerned citizen prevented violence.

The 31 people arrested in Idaho have ties to a White nationalist group and planned to riot at a Pride event, police say. Here’s what we know

After an alarmed 911 caller reported a group dressed like a “little army” getting into a moving truck, police in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, arrested 31 men believed to be linked to a White nationalist group, who had plans to riot at a weekend Pride event, authorities said. The large group – which police believe was affiliated with Patriot Front – was seen at a hotel piling into a U-Haul with riot gear, the caller told a 911 dispatcher. They were later pulled over and arrested, Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White said.

When becoming aware of an immediate threat inside the United States, call 911. If you discover credible evidence of anti-LGBTQ+ violence being planned for some future time, call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). Hate crimes are against the law. All threats of violence should be taken seriously.

If you're abroad, remain alert and pay attention to local advisories and those from embassies.

There's an axis of homophobia which includes Russia, Iran, Uganda, and the far right in the West. Islamic State and (so called) Patriot Front are essentially on the same side. It's sad, but such threats, regardless of source, cannot be ignored.

When requested, subject cooperatively recounts information about Mekhanism that was included in his original set of knowledge as per the parameters of Project JAMAIS VU. Subject demonstrates successful and comprehensive integration of knowledge, consistent with initial assessments.

Subject denies any direct experience with, particular feelings on, or personal significance of Mekhanism.

Subject denies the current presence of anyone named "Coldsprings" in the personnel registries he has access to.

Subject denies recognition of the name "Coldsprings."

Subject attempts a joke with the interviewer, and displays embarrassment and distress upon its apparent ineffectiveness.

Subject expresses relief when dismissed with no further action.

Conclusions: Further interviews with those present for the alleged events of 09/03/2024 are required.

Dr. Shaw does not appear cognizant of the "Coldsprings" entity, nor appears to have any lasting impairments from currently established baseline functioning. Regular psychiatric evaluation is to continue. It is possible that Dr. Shaw is intentionally downplaying symptoms, but it is not currently assumed that he is likely to be deceptive.

On The Blessedness Of Courage

A homily for the Full Moon on October 17, 2024.

Dearly Beloved,

Happy Full Moon!

In this witchiest of months, the movements of the Moon can resonate particularly deeply within us. Our lives can be caught up in the currents of birth, growth, death, and rebirth even more than usual. I know that in my own life, the currents of the magickal and the mundane have become so hopelessly entangled that it impossible to separate them. And while I am quite aware that this is a good thing on a spiritual level, it can also sometimes be very difficult on a personal level.

I’ve been going through an important rite of passage, and through it all I have often found myself frightened. No, let me be honest with you, let me always lead with my vulnerability with you, dear ones: I have been terrified. I have been forced, by the currents I myself set into motion, to either alter or abandon entire ways of being that I have cultivated and practiced most of my life. And throughout this time of change, of death and rebirth, there is one virtue that has helped me more than any other, and it is upon that virtue I am moved to speak today.

Let us speak of the virtue of courage.

Fear is inevitable. Fear is one of the great constants of existence and it can be a great boon to our basic survival. Fear is what tells us to walk faster when that strange man is behind us, fear is what tells us to put on the oven mitts before grabbing the hot dish fresh from the oven, and fear is one of the three primary emotions (the other two being anger and disgust) that tell us when something is just not okay. So in many ways fear is our friend. It gives us important information about the world and protects us from many dangers. Fear is a gift.

But fear can paralyze us.

As I have said, I wish to lead with my vulnerability with you, dear ones. I wish to always be as authentic and honest with you as possible. So I will confess, I have often let my life be ruled by fear. For many years, I have experienced great anxiety in social situations and when leaving the house. Every time I have to run an errand or even go live on camera in a Zoom meeting, my body pours sweat, my heartbeat races, and I want nothing more than to run away and hide. Fear is one of my oldest friends and worst enemies, both protecting and imprisoning me. There is a part of my mind that tells me that the world isn’t safe, and honestly, as a queer, transgender, disabled, neurodivergent woman in a modern USA filled with hate crimes and mass shootings, the world isn’t safe. My mind isn’t lying to me and my fears are not irrational. I can’t make myself leave the house by telling myself that I am being silly and that the world is safe, because it just isn’t.

So how do I leave the house? How do I make myself do all the things a modern priestess and occultist has to do to make her life work? How do I bring myself to pour out my heart and soul every week on this blog, even though I know that my earnestness is largely considered “cringe” in our culture and that most people are just going to laugh at me (or worse)? Hell, how do I get groceries?

In a word, courage.

Courage is what allows me to go to the grocery store. Courage is what allows me to go to the constant cycle of doctor’s appointments and trips to the pharmacy that is the life of a disabled person. Courage is what allowed me to transition and to walk in a hostile world as a transgender woman. Courage is just as much my constant friend as fear, and courage is what ends up rebutting most of the arguments my fearful mind throws up to stop me from doing the things I need to do.

But what, truly, is courage?

Many people think that courage is the absence of fear. They think that if one feels fear at all that one is a coward. But the philosopher Aristotle and many other people who have thought very hard about the issue since have generally agreed that courage is not the absence of fear at all. In fact, courage is defined (as are all virtues) as a mean between two extremes. Fear lays on a spectrum. On one end of the fear spectrum, we have cowardice, which is indulgence in fear to the point that it paralyzes you and prevents you from doing what you need to do. On the other end we have foolhardiness, which is ignoring fear to the degree that you ignore danger entirely, even to the point of actually seeking it out. Notice that both ends of this spectrum are an indulgence—it is tempting to go to either extreme—and that true courage is neither extreme, but a place of dialogue between them. We must seek and find the place that acknowledges and accounts for danger while also doing what we must to accomplish our missions in life. We have a right and responsibility to protect ourselves, but we must also be willing to take risks in order to do what must be done.

Now, how does the virtue of courage apply to my primary topic on this blog, the living of the spiritual life? Well, the spiritual life is scary. We are constantly being pushed past our old limits, constantly being asked by the Divine to change and grow beyond ourselves, and constantly being held responsible for both ourselves and our actions in the sight of both the Divine and our communities. We are asked to go down into the Underworld to die and be reborn, again and again, every year, every month, and every night. Yes, the Great Work, the ongoing theophoric relationship with the Divine that heals us and helps us grow, is the most important thing we can do with our lives…and it is terrifying.

So what can we do? How can we bring ourselves to challenge our fear and to live in courage, even when our world makes it very difficult? Well, as mages and mystics we have options that many people do not. We have our relationships with our deities and ally spirits and our relationship with the Divine as a whole. We also have our relationships with others in our spiritual communities, which can be so important both as a comfort and as a part of our growth. And, perhaps most importantly, we have our relationship with ourselves, the constant awareness of ourselves as embodied spiritual beings who must make choices that have meaning.

Yes, each and every one of these different types of relationship can bring us difficult moments. After all, we have to live up to all of those relationships and do right by all of those people, including ourselves. But those relationships are also at the heart of what motivates the spiritual life. We want to see and be seen, to know and to be known. It is this primal urge that brought our ancestors to reach out to the world around them, to reach out and discover the deities and spirits around us, and it is this same primal urge that we must trust to bring us through the fear, through our moments of death and rebirth, and finally take us to the other side.

It is also a blessing that we may join together and find courage, that we can hold each others hands in the dark. I take great refuge in my marriage, my spiritual community (that’s you, dear ones), and my relationships with my deities and ally spirits. It is thanks to these people (yes, deities and spirits are people, too) that I can find my way through the dark and back into the light.

So let us reach out to the Divine, dear siblings, to our deities and allies. Let us reach out to each other in love. Let us look out at that big, scary world and find within ourselves the strength to reach out, even when we are terrified. Let us have faith in ourselves and each other.

Let us have courage.

Wow, now as you can tell, a lots gone on the last couple days! Especially with Rhys! Jeez! Everything seems to be ramping up, which is pretty great -- I don't know if you all are feeling the energy too, but it's nice to see some good things going on in these uncertain times. I know things are still rough right now, and some of you are itching to get out and make a difference. Please know that if you are feeling up for it now, it's totally okay to do that. Find things to do in your local community, find out how ot help online-- whatever you feel comfortable with. --and if you're not quite ready yet, that's okay too. I took two days off work this week despite having a huge project to finish, because I got sick, and my brain told me it needed a break, that there had been too much. I know not everyone has the luxery of doing that-- but if you do, please take some time if you need it. I've probably mentioned this before, but something that always bothers me about the phrase "You can't help anyone else if you don't help yourself!" is that that's not entirely true. YOU CAN. You can do all sorts of stuff without helping yourself, and by tiring yourself, and burning yourself out. But it's not sustainable, and you can't do it forever. You are so very strong, and I bet you could help so many people, and family and burn brightly until there was nothing left of you-- but that's not what any of us want. We want you to be okay on the other side of all this-- and sometimes that means taking a break even when things feel like they just can't wait. We care so much for you lovelies. Please care for yourselves too if you need it <3
