if you are made too feel too weird or "too queer" for a given queer space, i think that's a pretty big red flag that it's not a very open or safe space, and they're not as good of a queer space as they feel they are. only focusing on "mainstream" or "common" identities when it comes to building queer spaces helps no one. in my college's pride group, even when it was small, there were people there identifying as things like transfem agender people, multigender people, and genderfluid people. it's not that much of a stretch to include "less common" identities, you don't have to sacrifice anything in order to include queers with "Weird" identities. nobody should ever be considered "too queer"

BADASSES!!!!!
LOVE NONBINARY PEOPLE!!!!!
ALL OF EM
let's hear it for the nonbinary folks who:
don't present androgynously
use "binary" pronouns in any capacity
identify partially with a binary gender
have a "gendered" name
don't experience body dysmorphia
don't experience gender dysphoria
DO experience gender dysphoria/body dysmorphia but aren't sure what gender or body would suit them
just experience body/gender apathy instead
can't be open about their gender identity yet
you're all absolutely valid.
don't ever feel like you're "not nonbinary enough" because you absolutely are! 💖

Today marks the annual Transgender Day Of Remembrance, so I wanted to share its history with you.
Take care of yourself, stay safe and cautious. Let me remind you that you're all valid & loved, no matter what!
In loving memory to everyone who's senselessly lost their life over just being themselves. You will not be forgotten. 🏳️‍⚧️

A Nonbinary Rant
The hardest part of being nonbinary is living in a binary world. Many forms and documents don’t consider us. And if they do, we are slotted into “other” or “prefer not to say”. Public restrooms in many establishments require us to decide which binary door to walk through. The English language also caters to the binary: sir and madam, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. When I get called either one of these, my muscles tense and my brain recoils.
Many states don’t recognize us even though we can request a gender neutral marker on our passports. And many of us choose not to get this gender neutral passport for fear of discrimination and hatred. It not only outs us as trans but puts our lives in danger as well. It restricts where we can travel to and where we can live.
Many outside the community have erroneous assumptions about us. They assume that we all have blue hair, dress alternatively, are Gen Z, watch copious amounts of TikTok, and go by “they/them” pronouns.
I’ve never had blue hair, I dress in blue jeans and graphic tees, I’m a Millennial who was born in the eighties, and I don’t watch TikTok unless it’s Noahfinnce or Jammidodger. The only stereotype I fit is that I prefer they/them pronouns and have for the last twenty-five years!
And if a nonbinary person does fit all of the above stereotypes, so what? Let them live their life in peace and dignity. It’s not hurting you any.
People also assume that nonbinary people don’t experience gender dysphoria, that they don’t transition, that they don’t face discrimination, that they are attention seekers, and that they fall somewhere on the binary between man and woman.
Let me tackle the first two points, some nonbinary people may not experience gender dysphoria but others do. Some may transition but others won’t. It’s all down to the individual nonbinary person, and how they experience their gender.
I personally experience gender dysphoria. My chest caused me such unease that I had to undergo top surgery to alleviate my severe discomfort. I also experience period dysphoria. That time of the month always sends me into a dark place.
Next point, nonbinary people do face discrimination. As stated previously, many states don’t recognize our gender identity, and many people don’t believe in our existence. And quite a few of these people belong in the LGBTQIA+ community themselves. I even heard a few trans people deny our existence! Many talk about us like we’re leprechauns or trolls who live under decrepit bridges. They don’t talk about us like we’re real, living, breathing human beings with complex thoughts and feelings. They degrade us to objects and subject us to intense scrutiny and dissection.
The penultimate point, we aren’t attention seekers. We just want to share our lived experiences and connect with others who also share these same experiences. We also share our experiences to hopefully dispel rumors and fear mongering, to fight for equitable rights, to demand protection under state and federal laws, and to solidify our existence. We have existed since the dawn of man, and we will continue to exist until man becomes extinct.
Last point, not all nonbinary people fall between the man/woman binary. Many fall outside of it like I do. I’m *agender. I don’t identify as either a man or a woman. I just feel like me. A person, an individual, a hominid.
And to piggyback off of this point, no, it’s not a phase. Not all nonbinary people will eventually pick a binary gender. Some will but many more won’t. Some people are simply nonbinary, and nothing will change this fact.
Well, that’s all I have for today. Until next time, take care and stay curious.
*Some agender individuals don't identify as trans or nonbinary. They feel that their gender identity falls within the a-spectrum. Others, like myself, do identify as trans and/or nonbinary. It's all down to the individual person in how they identify.
