Hobbies of the 141(+Konig) bc midterm season is killing me and I don't have the motivation to write anything more than the thoughts of a madwoman
------
Price: Fishing because how could it not be. Dragging the canoe out before the crack of dawn. Cigar slotted between his lips, a groan leaving his mouth as he leans back to grab some more bait. Never really catches to keep. Just likes the quiet. However the moment you offer to come with him? He's so excited. Dressing you up nice n proper so you stay warm even on the open lake. Puts all the bait on your hook and teaches you how to cast a line even if he just ends up doing it for you. Doesn't say anything when your whispered chatter and shifting of the boat scared off the fish. Just tells you that he must've picked a dead lake.
Simon: Cooking initially wasn't really a thing that occurred to him to try to do. Didn't grow up with home cooked meals and wasn't like he needed to know for adulthood because he's not in the vicinity of a working stove 90% of the time. Then you came over, frowning into his cabinets and fridge bc how the hell is this man alive? Does he even live here or is he just a squatter bc why is it so empty?? It was only after he starting realizing you would be a regular guest in his home that he realized maybe his habits might have to change. Started off with simple recipes. Functional rather than for taste. Then you'd send him recipes from his favourite takeout spots and he started to experiment more. Now whenever he's home he likes to make your lunches for the next day. Meal prepping for the days he's gone just so he can make your day a bit easier.
Soap: Gardening. His family was on the homesteaders side growing up and he's taken up on the greenery of it. Tries to make sure he's always home early spring so he can set up all his seeds. Dictating where the tomatoes go vs the onions because the onions bolted right early last year and he's not going to be a fool two years in a row. Part of him always feels proud when you just go into the garden to pull up some carrots rather than having to go to the store. Something bout the idea of providing for you without the use of money feels domestic. Every year with out fault you have to give away jams or pickles because there's too much for just you two. He just says that's all the more reason to start growing your household.
Gaz: look at this man and tell me he doesn’t have a gaming set up. Plays a wide variety of games but his favourite is probably sandbox like Subnautica or No Mans Sky . Where he isn't having to intake a lot of information like with a story game and can fuck in the world without consequence. 100% found those Palworld sacrifice setups hilarious. Whenever you're at work and he's home you always get pictures of some random animal and him asking you to come up with a name. Make his avatar look like you so he ‘can stare at your ass the whole time.’
Konig: never written for him yet but I couldn't get the idea of bullet loading for him. Him at the range collecting casings that he can reuse, jiggling the bag of them to you to show off all the money he saved. Just look at his model everything on him look like refurbished equipment there's no way he's not cheap at home too. He's got his manual with the powder amounts set up on the coffee table, brows drawn down in concentration as he mentally compares the power-to-range of the last set of bullets he did up. Meanwhile you got your show on and a sweet treat because you agreed to help him by doing all the resizing. The mechanisms clinking every time you pull down on the lever.

TADC Tower Records Cafe collaboration information
Tumblr media
A few hours ago, the official Japanese Amazing Digital Circus Twitter account revealed that the series would be collaborating with two Tower Records Cafes in the country. Ticket pre-sales begin on the 18th (JST), and the actual collab will start between October 31st and November 1st (depending on the store) and run until the 25th.
What will this entail, exactly? As Tower Records' post on the matter says (roughly translated):
ポムニたちをはじめとしたキャラクターたちのイメージコラボメニューの販売やオリジナルメニュー特典のほか、コラボ限定描き下ろしを使用した店内装飾で皆さまをお迎えいたします! In addition to selling new menu items styled after Pomni and company, as well as specially-made bonus postcards, everyone who comes will be greeted with in-store collab artwork (made just for the occasion)!
They'll also be selling merchandise (some new, some pre-existing) to people who consume the event's food.
That's the gist of it, but I felt like summarizing all the relevant information I could (near-entirely from the aforementioned blog post) - the fruit of my efforts is just below the jump.
To begin with, attending the cafe requires advance reservations, with each time slot lasting for an hour & twenty minutes. Attendees buy online tickets (worth 500 yen per person, accompanied by a 500 yen meal coupon) tied to the number of seats they'll need - oddly, they're grouped into either 2 or 4 seats independent of the flat 500 yen/person rate, which means that a single diner is still technically in the "2 seats" category despite obviously only needing one.
(Also: they do offer same-day tickets if - and only if - there happens to be vacancy. They don't come with any meal coupons, though.)
(As a second side note, every price I mention in this post includes tax.)
Of course, your ticket won't (entirely) cover the cost of food and drink. The Cafe limits the amount of either you can buy: a single person (500 yen) can purchase no more than 1 food item, 1 sweet, and 3 drinks. (This is also the limit for same-day tickets.) However, the upper limit scales in accordance with the price of the ticket (and, in turn, the amount of people expected to be in your group) - at absolute most (4 people/2,000 yen), diners can get 4 food items, 4 sweets, and 12 drinks.
Right now, I imagine, you're probably wanting to see those food items. Without further ado, here are the two options (both costing 1,890 yen):
Tumblr media
Pomni Hamburger: Includes buns, hamburger patty, pickles, a chedder cheese slice, red-leaf lettuce, tomato, and ketchup. Served with French fries & monaka. (I'm not 100% sure about that last one but it's the only translation of モナカ that seemed plausible in this context.)
Tumblr media
Ragatha Omurice: Includes chicken rice, a thin omelette "sheet" (オムシート), and ketchup. Served with potato salad, red-leaf lettuce, mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, & monaka.
Now we move on to the sweets:
Tumblr media
Caine Cupcake (1,690 yen): A cupcake with strawberry whip, strawberries, blueberries, mixed berries, mint, powdered sugar, chocolate sweets, strawberry sauce, & monaka.
Tumblr media
Zooble Parfait (1,690 yen): Includes a strawberry no-bake cake (literally "rare cake," or レアケーキ - I assume it's a cold or at least cool treat), mango ice cream, corn flakes, mascarpone whip, blueberry sauce, yogurt, mixed berries, mint, chocolate sweets, rolled chocolate, & monaka.
Tumblr media
Jax Pancake (1,890 yen): A thick hotcake served with blueberry sauce, mixed berries, blueberry cream, whipped cream, strawberries, blueberries, chervil, silver dragees (tiny edible decorations), powdered sugar, monaka, & latte (panna?) cotta.
The drinks make up the largest category by far - each one is priced at 900 yen:
Tumblr media
Gangle Berry Tea (HOT): Made with raspberry syrup, black tea, mixed berries, and mint. Also mentioned (but not pictured): whipped cream & monaka.
Tumblr media
Jax Blueberry Yogurt: Made with blueberry sauce, drinkable yogurt, blueberries, whipped cream, and mint. Not pictured: monaka.
Tumblr media
Ragatha Blue Lemonade (HOT): Made with blue curaçao syrup, lemonade, and lemon slices. Not pictured: whipped cream & monaka.
Tumblr media
Pomni & Kinger Strawberry Milk: Made with strawberry syrup, diced strawberries, milk, whipped cream, strawberry sauce, and a cherry. Not pictured: monaka.
Tumblr media
Caine & Bubble Cranberry Juice: Cranberry juice with raspberries and star-shaped nata de coco. Not pictured: whipped cream & monaka.
Finally, there's only one takeout option:
Tumblr media
Takeout Bottle w/Popcorn (980 yen): Specifically popcorn colored red, blue, & yellow. They make these in-store, and Tower Records recommends you eat them as soon as possible (regardless of whether you open it or not). They're also exempt from the aforementioned purchase limits - buy as much as you'd like. (Or as much as is available - each store will keep the public updated on their inventory through their respective Twitter accounts.)
(Curiously, one of the many disclaimers seems to state that the "collab & takeout menus will be available for the whole [financial] year." I don't know if I'm misinterpreting the original Japanese sentence - コラボメニュー・テイクアウトメニューは通期提供です。)
As an extra bonus, every order (including the takeaway bottle) comes with a bonus postcard featuring some of the event's artwork. The selection differs depending on the date: come before November 12th and you'll get one of these at random:
Tumblr media
However, if you come between the 12th and the 25th (the event's closing date), you'll instead get one of these:
Tumblr media
Finally, people who pay for any of the aforementioned dishes will be allowed to purchase merchandise on-site.
Tumblr media
The above promo picture conveniently separates the new items (top) from the existing ones (bottom). The former includes acrylic stands and badges (sold either individually or as a full set of 8 - the latter being the upper limit for them no matter what), clear files, and mugs (1 per person). The latter is mostly stuff InfoLens made for the Japanese market (some of which will only go on sale on November 7th), with the lone exception of Jax's AniMatez figure. Also: the limit is specifically per person, not per the number of seats - so one attendee won't be considered two people, even if they're technically in the "2 seats" category. (Remember that from earlier?)

I've had rats for years at this point now and finally want to put down the best tips I've learned. This won't work for everyone, some are very conditional to me, but maybe some of these will help someone. Fleece hammocks: Boo. Microplastics and too warming. Canvas hammocks: Yes, please. Highly washable. Far more tough. I wish they were easier to find. Coiled rope baskets are also a godsend. I hang them by the handles in the cage, they love them way more than anything marketed to rats. Bottles are nice but some rats wanna splash and have a place to wash their little hands. Fresh in pod peas are by the pound at my supermarket. I usually spend 70 cents on the amount for several treat sessions. All my frozen peas end up getting freezer burnt by the time I get halfway through the bag. Antibiotics will be needed if you keep rats. Do not give antibiotics with dairy, many classes of antibiotics bond to calcium thereby making them far less effective. Speaking of, antibiotics seem to have the hardest taste to cover up. Ground meat baby food, Hershey simply five syrup (Just a little), peanut powder (No added sugar, oils), fruit compote/jam/jelly, small absorbent bread snacks/cereal, smushed pasta, cream of wheat, are all options to get meds into rats. You can call exotic vets and ask for an estimate on a basic rat exam. Do it, the prices vary WILDLY. We had a vet who charged us 35$ to see three rats at once and one who quoted us 200$ to look at one. You're gonna notice a trend if you call vets in higher class/rich areas. Fuck em'. Also ask your vet if you can keep a supply of meds on hand just in case. If they last at room temp you can buy some preemptively. Things like doxycycline you can get from human pharmacies.
Zip ties are god. All hail zip ties. Same with swivel clasps. Between them both you can cage mount anything your heart desires.
Leave bedding in a hot car or freezing conditions for a night. Warehouses get mites. Mites are a dick to deal with. Kill em' all.
Give them a variety of fresh things while they're young. Not always but sometimes I'd get an older gent rescue who had no idea what to do with berries or tomatoes and would refuse them. They learn better what is safe when young. At some point you will have an emergency. Make sure you know where an emergency vet is and that they keep night/weekend hours. Keep funds on hand for that day.
Rats hide pain well. When they age you may need to start pain management if you notice them moving differently even if they don't show their pain blatantly. Just start with low doses and see if they act like their old selves again. Research your breeders. Get recommendations from other rat people. Check and see if there are rat rescues in your area. Also the Humane Society sometimes takes in rodents.
Controversial take: You will encounter people in ratkeeping who say buying feeders is a sin. It's not. Feeder supply will exist whether or not every rat fancier boycotts them. We are far far fewer in number than snake/lizard people. Wherever you got your rats it's valid so long as you give them healthcare, good nutritious food, love, and mental stimulation. A lot of the 'foods to avoid, foods to include' lists are not researched. I've seen lists that ban chocolate. Rats freaking love chocolate they just need to take it easy on fats and sugars but cocoa powder can be a good mix in and can help ratty blood flow. I've seen people ban mango. if you read the study that led to this they gave rats an obscene amount of D-limonene to trigger cancer and small amounts had no side effects at all. Read the studies, look for sources.

trick or treat!
you get: a soup recipe!
Very Good Pumpkin Soup
Ingredients:
approx. 1 pound pumpkin. you can use a can of puree, or smash a gourd. either/or.
1 liter (2 cups) chicken stock
1 pound meat, browned. I make little venison meatballs but if what you have is stew meat that is fine. my mom uses ground beef. regardless you want bite-ish size chunks and you want them Brown.
1 can (~15 oz) beans, drained. whichever beans you have and like
corn kernels, to taste. I usually use a 15 oz can of them because I can get them for my favorite price of free, but my mom uses smaller amounts. follow your heart. if they're in a can you should drain them.
1 can (~15 oz) diced/chopped tomatoes. if you can get Spiced tomatoes (my local shop has tomatoes with green chilis) use those. don't drain these.
1 Tbsp chili powder. if you're using spiced tomatoes you may find this to be unnecessary or need diminishment
1 tsp cumin powder. again not required if you're using spiced tomatoes.
Preparation:
Put It All In A Pot And Cook For Fifteen Minutes.

若さゆえの/Mistakes of Youth
was a sandwich available in the Zeon's Diner section of Tokyo's Gundam Café during the Red of Excellence ~Char Aznable Fair~ promotion from November 1st to December 12th 2020.
It consisted of "Potato salad, Plain bread, Spicy mayonnaise, Bell pepper powder, Roast beef, Petit tomato, Tartar sauce..." as well as "...Green curl [lettuce]".
Priced at 660 yen including taxes, it was the only appetizer on this menu, which appears to never have been served again. This suggests a more literal interpretation of it's name.

Dinner Recipe: Spaghetti
Tumblr media
TIME: ★★★★
PRICE: ★★★★
EASE: ★★★★
CLEANUP: ★★★✰
This might seem like such a basic recipe to some folks. And even more probably think spaghetti is a cheap, bland, bulk necessity meal just to get them through the week. But spaghetti can be really really tasty with just a little care, and it still only takes about 20 minutes to make!
-
Ingredients: 1. Pasta of choice (doesn't have to be spaghetti noodles. Can be linguini, bow ties, angel hair, penne, whatever's cheap!) 3. 1/2 diced onion (I typically use red onion) 4. 1 TB minced garlic (or 4-5 cloves. Follow your garlic heart tbh) 5. 1 lb ground meat (I prefer Italian sausage because it's pre-seasoned, or 1/2 Italian sausage-1/2 ground turkey. But you can use ground meat of choice! Just be sure to season it liberally with salt, pepper, italian seasoning, garlic powder, etc.) 6. 1 can of diced (or crushed) tomatoes 7. 1 can (or jar) of tomato sauce (plain, marinara, vodka sauce, whatever.) 8. (OPTIONAL) Fresh basil, goat cheese, parmesean cheese, and/or cherry tomatoes
- -Cook pasta according to directions on the packaging (if you cook enough pasta, you start to get a feel for it and don't need to measure/time it/etc. but following the directions can remove a lot of that anxiety) Work on the sauce while the pasta cooks. -Heat some oil in a (large, wide) pan. Once it's heated, add onion. Cook the onion for a minute or two, then add your garlic. Stir for about 30 seconds. -Add your ground meat. Break it up, mix it nicely with your onion and garlic in the pan. This is a great time to start seasoning if you don't like touching meat! Salt, pepper, garlic powder, italian seasoning to taste! -Once your meat is 90% cooked through, add your canned tomatoes and sauce. (You can add the tomatoes earlier, but I find the red coloring of the tomatoes makes it harder for me to tell when the meat is no longer pink.) -Heat it through and let it simmer for another 3-5ish minutes while stirring. -Serve your portion of pasta and put your sauce over it! Top with your optional ingredients! (Crumbled goat cheese on spaghetti is a GAME CHANGER!) It's pretty damn easy, and EXTREMELY damn tasty.
- Leftovers: I cannot express enough how well pasta sauce freezes. Cook it in bulk and portion it into some tupperware. Freeze it. When you wanna make spaghetti, just get a portion of the sauce out the night before, leave it in the fridge to thaw overnight, then heat it up in the microwave or over the stove when you're ready! Cook a fresh batch of pasta to go with it- boom. Easy as heck. Just remember to try to finish your freezer leftovers within about 3 months!

related to last post, the Only Thing I Eat Lately (which varies) is wilted baby spinach and brown mushrooms over noodles with japanese seven spice powder and a little soy sauce or salt, possibly with an egg if im at home, and cherry tomatoes if i have them.
Trader Joe's has these cooked but shelf stable thai wheat noodles and they're both much better than i expected and very easy to take for lunch-- you put a packet in with the uncooked spinach and mushrooms in a microwave safe container. for lunch you take it out of the packet, add about a half tablespoon of water to your lunch container, and microwave the whole shebang for about 90 seconds and top with the seven spice powder.
(the alternative to those noodles which does not cost three or four dollars for three packets of noodles is simply top ramen brick without the seasoning packet, or at least with about a fourth of it instead) (it was worth the price but it still made me wince a little lmao)

For Veganuary, some of my favorite vegan foods!
As a general rule, I use canned or frozen veggies in all of these. They’re cheaper, they last longer, and you don’t have to do any chopping (which is especially convenient when it comes to onions). The only exceptions are mushrooms and potatoes.
Rice!
I cook it with veggie broth (or a vegan chicken flavored broth), garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.
Before I set it to simmer, I dump in a bag of frozen veggies (I like mixed veggies or spinach) or fresh veggies (I like mushrooms) and throw in a can of chickpeas for good measure
Right after it’s done, I stir in some vegan cheese if I have it. I usually do about a cup of cheese when I make a big pot and that’s plenty.
Dirty Rice
Pasta!
To stretch mac and cheese, melt some vegan butter in the pot, add your unsweet dairy free milk, then add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and whatever seasonings you want. Bring it to a boil and then whisk in enough flour to get it to a gravy-like consistency. then add your dairy free cheese--you’ll only need half as much.
Garlic Butter Pasta
Chickpea “Tuna” Casserole
Alfredo
I like to add red bell pepper or spinach to a mozzarella mac and cheese; peas or meatless crumbles to a cheddar mac and cheese.
For tomato sauce, I just use a can of crushed tomato with salt, garlic and onion powder, italian seasoning, and a bit of balsamic vinegar. Spinach and mushrooms go well with this, too.
Some of my top recipes
Biscuit Topped Chickpea Pot Pie (takes a while but so worth it!)
Tabbouleh (I usually add chickpeas to make it heartier)
Corn Fritters (I just throw in whatever veggies I have on hand)
Biscuits and Gravy (I usually add some fake sausage to the gravy to make it more filling)
Split Pea Soup
Hummus and Pita (This isn’t real pita, but it’s close and much easier. Of course you can always just buy it at the store, too.)
Potato Wedges
Refried Bean Burgers
Burritos (No recipe, but I fill mine with refried beans, spanish rice--the little knorr packets are vegan!--taco sauce, and mexican style dairy free cheese)
Nachos (No recipe, but I top mine with black beans, a vegan cheese sauce, salsa, and black olives)
Pancakes
Desserts are easy--just sub out dairy-free milk and dairy-free butter. Or search for vegan versions of your favorites!
Cinnamon Rolls
Banana Bread Cinnamon Rolls
Orange Rolls
Sprinkle Sugar Cookies
Rolled Sugar Cookies
Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Vanilla Pudding
Chocolate Pudding
Lots of stovetop pudding mixes are vegan--just use non-dairy milk!
Vanilla Cake
Chocolate Cake
Coffee Cake
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Banana Nice Cream
Frozen Pineapple Whip
Vegan Egg Substitutes for Baking
Cheese - I buy raw cashews in bulk from foodtolive--shipping is free, tax is included, and the price is very reasonable. I eat cashew cheese every day so I usually get the 7lb bag and keep it in the bottom of my fridge.
Easy Cheese Sauce (no cashews)
Go-to Cashew Cheese (This is a great base! Sometimes I add tomato paste and hot sauce for a buffalo cheese, or sometimes I go heavy on the lemon juice and add dried dill and parsley).
Pimento Cheese
Sundried Tomato Cheese

Brad's Food Pellets: the HDR?
Statement of the Problem: C-PTSD and Orthorexia
Most Recent Experiment: Military-surplus Humanitarian Daily Ration packets?
I have recurring bouts of pervasive anhedonia, probably related to C-PTSD and definitely made worse by the texture sensitivity of my autism-spectrum disorder. One of the major impacts of this on my life is that I have severe difficulty staying fed: I have days, sometimes multiple in a row, where the thought of eating anything makes me gag. Eventually, when I'm on the point of collapse, I'll choke down some of the fattiest, most sugar-sweetened food there is just to keep from getting falling over or passing out, if that's all I can stomach. But that ends up making things worse, because it's not satisfying and it's even more depressing.
This has been made worse in recent years by seemingly non-stop pressure to lose weight, despite the absence of any scientifically demonstrable way for me to do so. In the last year or so, this has manifested as what I recognize to be the symptoms of orthorexia, food-avoidant behavior driven not by desire to get thin but by fear of "eating something that's wrong."
One way that I've been trying to manage this is by experimenting with what one of my closest friends calls "Brad's food pellets." These are food solutions that are as nutritious as I can make them while meeting several criteria: high shelf stability, low price, and perhaps most importantly, lowest possible prep time, cooking time, and cleanup time. If food's going to be gross no matter what I do, I need to at least get it over with quickly.
Tumblr media
I found out via a Reddit blog post that there is a now 20+ year old collaboration between the big-three military-ration companies, at least three US government agencies, and at least two big disaster relief charities to continuously improve something called the Humanitarian Daily Ration: a salmon-pink nigh-indestructible self-padded heavy Tyvek envelope containing 2200 calories' worth of vegetarian, kosher, halal, nutritious, varied food that can, if necessary, be eaten with no additional preparation, for a maximum of $5 per day.
The collaboration hasn't settled on "good enough" and based on user feedback, they've revised the menu at least three times that I can find evidence of, not counting the one that's in progress right now. Because there's a new 2023 formulation (more infant-friendly food in every packet, substitution of sesame for peanuts), huge stocks of the 2011?-2022 formulation are being dumped onto the military surplus market right now. The State Department, the Army, FEMA, the Red Cross, and the UN High Council for Refugees are rushing to stock up on the 2023 formulation as fast as the big-three "MRE" companies can make them.
So it's trivially easy, if you search online, to find multiple vendors offering to ship a crate of ten 2022-model HDRs for $50 or less, including shipping, even though they're explicitly not intended for general civilian use. I decided to see if these would make acceptable "food pellets" and ordered what turned out to be "menu B," the one that primarily comes from the vendor Sopakco. Which crate you get is deliberately random, they're not labeled on the outside, and online reviews suggest that "crate B" is the worst of the three, so this makes a good worst-case experiment. It came with:
10 packets of unfrosted brown sugar Pop-Tarts, two per packet
10 peanut butter packets and 10 strawberry jam packets (bread not included)
16 packets of ultra-concentrated mildly-spicy tomato soup in three different flavors: lentils with rice, black eyed peas with rice, and lentils with potatoes and mixed vegetables (or as I said after adding the red and black pepper, "three different flavors of vegetarian chili")
4 packets of ultra-concentrated mild yellow curry with rice & lentils
10 packets of large saltine crackers flavored with powdered mixed vegetables, two per packet
10 large shortbread cookies
10 large cinnamon-oatmeal cookies
20 ingredient lists printed on heavy card-stock, and
10 "accessory" packs, each of which contains one plastic spoon, one napkin, one wet-wipe, one salt packet, one ground black pepper packet, one large red-pepper flake packet, two sugar packets, and a pack of paper safety matches.
Yes, the breakfast and both deserts are identical every day and, frankly, not great. The cookies and the Pop-Tarts are astonishingly dry and crumbly for the crate still having more than two years left on its "best used by" date. The Pop-Tarts and the shortbread cookie are also awfully bland for something that's going to be eaten every day. (Which is why they've been replaced for 2023 with tastier options.) At least the cinnamon-oatmeal cookie, dry and crumbly as it is, is very flavorful.
Each daily packet includes two of the concentrated-soup entrees, with a predictable rotation, but guaranteed not to be the same two days in a row. I can reconstitute one in a small saucepan, with half a packet or so of water, on an induction cooking plate in not much more than a minute, and once I crumble in one of the two daily crackers, it's an astonishingly tasty meal, enough that it cuts through both of my food-aversion issues, with zero cognitive/emotional load on me -- just grab one of the two that the packet chose for me.
2200 calories a day turn out to not be enough to satisfy me on some days, but I have previous "food pellet" experiments that I can pad out a menu with. I can write those experiments up, if there's any interest in the reblogs or comments?
But for now, I think I have, if not a solution, a reasonably well-tolerated treatment. As long as they're available on the military-surplus market, I'm going to re-order a crate every time I drop below four packets left. And, specifically:
On any day where it takes me longer than two hours to persuade myself to eat something, anything, for breakfast, it means I'm having one of "those" days, so I'm going to open another HDR packet and eat whatever it gives me.
