really, really hard to answer honestly bc looking at it from niktos pov he would really stubbornly say he doesnt need either of them. since his torture i imagine he tries to stay blank on real wants and desires like hes 80% an empty void of feeling and 20% just pure instinctual unchecked violence. hes not thinking of himself as a human being (quite literally he calls himself a tool) and the reasons for kr are really just regular human things. the normal need for human interaction. the company they provide to him caters to his need for challenge (krueger) and then comfort (rodion). and at the same time rodion can be a challenge and krueger can be a comfort. it all works with his hot and cold personality but at the end of the day humans are social creatures and he Needs someone to interact with. he almost cant help himself since imo before the torture he was very outgoing and charming, maybe not surrounded by deep relationships (esp not undercover) but certainly surrounded by people almost always.
