I finally had time to myself on my day off, and I thought of you. It isn't lost on me that in less than a week, the time you have been gone will be the same as the age I was when you left. There is nothing 'sweet' about sixteen.

This morning I pulled out the box of old photo albums, and after I laid out the photos across my coffee table, I read the letters that mom had wrote to you while she was away in the Philippines.

I even looked up your old address, scribbled in cursive on the front of each envelope. It's a corner store now; only three miles away according to google maps. I thought of you living there, reading the same handwritten words over 40 years ago. I wish I could ask you about them. I wish you could tell me the stories behind them. I just... wish we had more time.

Maybe it's the weather. But today feels especially hard without you here. I looked outside my windows and the clouds were too think, too low, to see the mountain behind and the ocean ahead. Just a blanket of grey.

I will pray for the sun to shine come December 4th. I hope to feel the warmth of the sun as I look up and say

And Odysseus claims him in a heartbeat, answering, “My son. My boy. My sweetest joy I’ve ever known. I embraced you twenty years ago. I’d do the impossible for you. I’d die for you.” He says, “Seeing the men here today, I can only wonder what you’ve been through for twenty years. My son, you’re already strong. You’re my own. You’re not alone. I’m home.”
