I don’t usually speak openly about problems within fandom. I keep to myself, occasionally throw a thought or two out, maybe reblog a beware post if things get downright dastardly, but this?

I don’t know why, but I feel compelled to throw my own two cents in.

I wasn’t originally going to write this, because I always feel like anything I could have said had already been done faster and more intelligently by someone else. But I don’t mind saying the same point again just to hammer it home this time around;

Death threats are not criticism.

Harassment is not criticism.

People going out of their way to say the most foul, insulting things possible about someone else’s writing is not criticism.

And if you think that any of those things are acceptable methods of ‘communication’ with another person then you are dead wrong and you need to rethink why you think it’s acceptable.

Not only is TSAMS/LAES free content, but it’s also ran by a small number of individuals. It’s not a corporation. It’s a group of folks on YouTube making silly fictional stories.

And yet? I have never had the misfortune of being within a fandom more openly negative than this very fandom.

The anonymous confessions, the harassment incidents, the endless discourse, and worst of all the awful behavior directed to our own fellow human beings.

I cannot emphasize this enough, it is not acceptable to do the shit that has been done to Kat. She did not deserve an ounce of what she has been dealt and I am ashamed that people within this fandom thought it fit to send her an endless god damn spew of vitriol potent enough to make the poor thing quit writing altogether.

Some of you people need to learn what actual criticism is, learn to remember that people are on the other side of a screen, that not everything revolves around you and your takes, and for the love of all that is good learn how to separate yourself and your being from internet discourse and stories and arcs and posting enough to realize that what you’re doing is parasocial unhealthy and weird.

Pick up a book!! Take a walk!! Look at the clouds!! Yes our stories and fiction are important to us- it’s important to me too- but it will never be so serious that you should throw around threats and insults over your optional entertainment!!

“Dick is extremely stubborn and thinks he’s right all the time” yeah it’s a character flaw.

“Jason has hypocritical tendencies” yeah it’s a character flaw.

“ Tim is entitled and doesn’t think about people when seeking results, and often acts uncaring” yeah it’s a character flaw.

“Damian is rude and bratty” yeah, it’s a character flaw.

Also, some people may not even regard everything listed above as flaws.

Having negative traits allows incredible flexibility within your characters, what makes them intriguing, what makes them easy to relate to. If you want to write people, then write people. But they can’t be good and clean all the time.

I think a lot about Leo standing up for his brothers in the things that really matter to them.

Like- Leo is the one who immediately pushes Mikey and Donnie into finding Raph the second it’s clear that their oldest brother is missing because he knows Raph can’t handle being separated like that.

Leo is the one who stands up for Mikey when Mikey wants to go on a solo mission, actively vouching for him and being the one to convince Raph into letting Mikey go, because being independent and proving himself just as capable of standing on his own two feet as everyone else means so much to Mikey.

And Leo defends Donnie’s honor in particular when his brothers’ intelligence is insulted because Leo is well aware of how important Donnie’s smarts are to him - and how important having those smarts valued and acknowledged is as well.

All this goes right into just how well Leo knows his brothers. For as much as he’ll tease or fight with them, he knows them, and he loves them.

ASOIAF discourse would be a lot more fun if we all realized that every single person who has been put in a position of leadership/rulership fails in one way or another. Jon and Dany failing is not an indictment on their abilities to lead or rule. They’re kids, they still have shit to figure out. Given “what was Aragorn’s tax policy”, I doubt GRRM will write a story that will feature the appearance of a most perfect ruler ever who will be a total success instead Jon and Dany who were tOtAl FlOpS. Especially if this person has no previous experience that has been detailed within the text itself. That’s not only antithetical to the series, but also not how you write a narrative.

i wanna clear something up to nevermos real quick: most mormons don’t look at the full picture of their religion. most mormons are not being openly racist or zionistic or homophobic. most mormons don’t practice what they preach. most mormons do their daily readings and prayers and think about their church the way they’re supposed to, but most mormons don’t fully comprehend it. most mormons are cult victims who genuinely want to to what’s best in the way they believe is right. while racism, zionism, homophobia etc. are unavoidable in the scriptures, this doesn’t mean they understand what is being taught. those who do understand it often don’t support those specific parts of the scripture and speak out against them. many outsiders seem to forget mormons are their own individual people.

I know a lot of people don’t like the fact that Tweek and Craig are almost always together now because they “don’t feel like individual characters anymore” but I personally couldn’t disagree more

Considering the fact that this is a trait you almost never see with the other couples (even Tolkien and Nichole, another relatively healthy couple, are rarely shown spending time together), the fact that Tweek and Craig do practically everything together is a great example of how strong the relationship between those two has become, and not only do I think it’s incredibly sweet, but I also don’t think them enjoying each other’s company necessarily means they’re no longer their own characters

I’m not going to pile on to the ‘everything hurts and I’m dying’ posts right now because I simply do not find it useful or productive. But here is the only thing that made me feel even an iota better today.

The food pantry where I volunteer is typically closed the weekend after Thanksgiving/Christmas, after we do our regular turkey drive. the holidays run up our costs and we’re getting an 18,000 dollar budget cut since a grant is ending and isn’t being renewed. We’re cutting costs wherever we can.

In the midst of trying not to drown myself at a beach during low tide, I got an email from the pantry coordinator. He said that “one of our neighbours” had made a donation and it was enough to cover the additional cost of the pantry being open for a holiday weekend, so now we will be able to serve clients for the weekend after Thanksgiving. On a given week, we serve around 400 households (last week it was 443). thanks to the actions of one person, 400 families will have food in their homes that they otherwise wouldn’t.

You and I are also one person.
