Forced Heat [Fem Chubby Bunny Reader] {Smut + Fluff}

You're a bunny hybrid, the last of your kind and through the time in imprisonment in this laboratory you were cautious of everything that did. The food they gave you, the stares, the tests. Everything freaked you out. It took a long while for you to get used to your new living conditions. The scientist in charge made sure to give you a habitat that suited to your needs instead of putting you in a cell since you were the last of your species so they made sure to take extra special care of you. So why did they think to pair you with a predator species? That was the last thing you wanted and apparently he felt the same way. “Why am I paired up with this inferior creature?” The wolf hybrid snarled at the scientist. You could only frown at his harsh words. His words stung just because you were a prey species doesn’t mean you are less important than the predators. “We are trying to see if you two are compatible Matias. Don’t make this any harder than it has to be.” One of the scientists warned him. Matias huffs in annoyance as he stares at you.
He sits down on the opposite of you in the tiny cell they put both of you in. “So what’s special that they had to pair me up with a small and chubby thing like you?” Matias said as he scrutinized you harshly. “Beats me.. I don’t want to be here any more than you do so please can we get this done.” You tried extending an olive branch to him. “Fine but we somehow are compatible enough to be mates. I don't want to hear any complaints from you.” Matias said with harsh glare. “So what’s your name, little bunny?” “[Y/N], My name is [Y/N]..” You told him with an unreadable expression. “[Y/N]” He took a second to digest the information. “It seems to fit you nicely. Yeah, I like that name.” Matias said as his lips slightly twitched upwards. Your eyes raked over his body. He was fit and lean, he didn’t have too much muscle which was good but he also had a lot of scars. “I’m guessing you're a warrior? Judging from your scars.” You asked him with curiosity. His gaze seemed to harden once you spoke about his scars. Your eyes widen in slight panic from his reaction. Matias then let out a sigh. “Yes, I was one of the warriors of my clan. All my scars came from different battles.” He informed you. As he starts to ramble about his scars you choose to get closer to him. He continued to talk and talk until you made it to the other side and sat beside him.
You then grabbed his hand and when you did that seemed to grab his attention. You pressed soft kisses to his scarred hand. You could feel him tense up but he didn’t pull his hand away. A soft ding noise echoed through the room. The scientists then entered the room with clipboards in hand. “Congrats you two. You both are compatible to be mates.” One of the male scientists with a sly smirk. Matias wrapped an arm around your plush waist signaling the male scientist to watch his words. “Alright, I see you're already getting protective of her.” He said with a chuckle. “Alright, guards take them back to their rooms.” The other scientist called for the guards. As the guards escorted both you and Matias back to your room you gave him a small reassuring smile. He saw it and couldn’t help but smile back.
As time went on the scientist found that you and Matias were the best fit for each well and mostly because once two hybrids mate they won’t be compatible with anyone else. So one day they decided to do a specific test only with you and not Matias. “It’s just some medicine [Y/N] relax.” The scientist said in a reassuring tone as she held up a syringe. Although it didn’t look like medicine, you'd rather obey than go without dinner again. So you lifted your arm and let them stick the needle inside of you. They injected  the “medicine” and it didn’t seem to take effect immediately you sighed thankfully. You were free to go back to your room but as you were escorted back to your room you couldn’t help but feel your body heat up.
Whatever they gave you it made you go into your heat faster than anticipated so you were humping anything you got your hands on.. Anything to make the aching feeling in your cunt go away but nothing seemed to be working.  You whined in pain as you humped the pillow that was drenched in your slick. “Get her mate, we have enough data and she looks like she needs him.” One of the scientists told the guards. Soon you heard the door to your habitat open and you saw your mate and he looked beyond worried. “Pumpkin, I’m so sorry.. Here let me help you.” Matias said as he unzipped his pants and freed his cock. He took the pillow away from you and flipped you onto your back. He positions you into a mating press as he aligns his cock into your dripping sex. He hissed as he pushed himself into you. You could only groan as you wrapped your legs around him to pull him in deeper. Once fully inside you he started at a slow pace but then gradually sped up. “Gonna give you some pups but first gotta take care of my baby.” He cooed as he kissed your soft plump cheek. “God my baby is so perfect..” Matias whined as he felt you clench around him. “Focus on my cock honey, focus on how it fills you nicely and perfectly.” He encouraged you as he thrusted roughly instead of you causing you to cry out in pleasure. The sound of other hybrids in contaminate cheered Matias on as he continued to help you with your forced heat cycle.
Matias feels you tighten around him, he bites back a groan and he thrusts one last time before he paints your walls white, he orgasm triggers your own and you moan out his name as you creamed around his knotted cock. You start to whine as you feel the base of his cock start to swell inside of you. ”I know.. I know sweetheart this is just to help you a little bit more.” He reassured you as he nuzzled his face into your hair as he inhaled your sweet scent. Your body trembles as it slowly gets used to the stretch. After a few mins Matias’s knot swells down and he pulls out of you. You sighed in content as you felt his strong arms wrap around your chubby body. You felt him rub his hand over your chubby tummy. “Can’t wait to see your belly swell up with our pups.” He said affectionately as looked into your eyes. “I’ll protect you and our babies. I promise my love.” He said as he pressed his lips against yours. “I love you” He whispers against your lips.

Human!Damian x Mer!Reader
Damian, one of the newest employees at Gotham Aquarium, forms a fast bond with its only mer inhabitant.
Content includes: Fluff, pre-relationship, language barrier
Tumblr media
You crack an eye open when you feel movement in the water. The rhythmic swish, swish, swish coaxes you from the bed of seaweed you were curled up in and you drift to the source of the disturbance in your habitat.
Surfacing, your gills flex and twitch briefly as you adjust to breathing air, and you chirp at the creature perched on the lip of your tank, one hand still swishing the water. His vibrant, green eyes and small smile never fail to make you happy.
"Good morning, Princess," the creature — Damian is his name, your mind supplies — greets you warmly. He lifts up a bucket with your breakfast, and you trill and reach for it eagerly, webbed fingers curling around the metal and brushing against his own, dry digits briefly. "You've got two shows today. The usual one at noon, and then a private birthday party this evening. These money-hungry cretins refused to listen when I told them it would disrupt your routine and irritate you, but they don't care. I apologize in advance."
You click and whistle at him as you shovel a fistful of eel into your mouth, chewing happily. It was difficult to understand the land creature, but you weren't terribly upset. You got the gist — something different was happening today. When different things happened, you tended to get more snacks, especially if you huffed and fussed a bit, so it was fine. You hope Damian will stick around and play after you finish your meal.
"Good job, Princess," the land creature says when you show him the empty bucket. You know what those words mean, and you preen and coo giddily. You like the title he calls you, too. "Princess" is not your primary identifier; it's not what the other land creatures call you, only Damian. He calls you something different, which feels special. You like that you're special to him, because he's your favorite handler and therefore special to you.
You slip under the water briefly to wet your gills, then break the surface again with a flick of your long, iridescent tail and reach for him, chirping. Damian gives you a considering look, head slightly tilted like he wants to hop into the tank with you, but ultimately pulls away and rises. You croon sadly after him, slapping the water.
"Later," he says, "I promise. We'll play later, when there's time. Right now, the tours are about to start. You know that."
You chuff. You do know that. It's almost Attention Time, which means more land creatures walk through strange tunnels that cut through the bottom of your large habitat to stare at you, and you get to stare back. If you do enough tricks, you even get snacks and toys. You like the attention; you're a beautiful mer and deserve to be admired, but you wish the creatures would actually come into the water instead of the large, weird tunnels you can't reach.
Slipping under the surface again, your tail propels you towards the larger section of your enclosure, where the tunnels are, and you don't have to wait much longer before the first group of land creatures comes through to admire you. To your endless delight, Damian is leading them. The other caretakers know that you're the most active when he's the one guiding the tours, so you make sure to do all the flips and twirls you've been taught for him.
When you catch his eye, Damian smiles a little again, just for you, and you trill with joy.

The Lion adventure
Tumblr media
Paring : cameraman!reader x Chris kratt
Tw: romance and fluff
—————————————————————
The sun hung low on the horizon, painting the African savanna in hues of gold and amber. You stood at the edge of the camp, gazing out at the vast landscape. The soft rustling of leaves and distant calls of wildlife filled the air. It was your first expedition with the Kratt brothers, and though you’d dreamed of this moment for years, being here in person was overwhelming in the best possible way.
“Hey, you ready for tonight’s adventure?” a familiar voice asked from behind.
You turned to see Chris Kratt standing just a few feet away, his signature green Creature Power Suit peeking out beneath his jacket. His brown eyes sparkled with excitement, and the hint of a grin played at his lips. The sight of him, so full of life and energy, sent a flutter through your chest.
“I think so,” you replied, trying to mask the nervousness in your voice. “What’s the plan?”
Chris stepped closer, his smile widening. “There’s a pride of lions not far from here. They’ve been active at dusk, and we’re hoping to get some footage of them hunting. It’s going to be amazing.”
You felt your heart race, not just at the thought of getting close to the wild cats, but because Chris was always so infectious with his passion. Being near him made you feel braver, more alive. He had that effect on people.
“I’ve got the camera ready,” you said, holding it up for emphasis. “Just show me where to point it.”
Chris chuckled. “I knew you’d be on top of it.” There was a warmth in his eyes when he looked at you—something deeper than just the camaraderie you shared on these trips. You’d noticed it over the past few weeks: the way his gaze lingered a little longer when you laughed at one of his jokes, or how he’d find excuses to be near you during the quieter moments of the day.
As the two of you walked toward the jeep, Chris paused, looking up at the darkening sky. “You know, I’ve been on countless expeditions, seen animals in their natural habitats, but there’s something about this one that feels different.”
“How so?” you asked, stepping closer, feeling the cool evening breeze brush against your skin.
He turned to face you fully now, his expression softer than you’d ever seen it. “I think it’s because you’re here. It’s been… special, having you around.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words. You searched his face, looking for any sign that he was joking, but his eyes held steady. The air between you seemed to thicken, heavy with unspoken feelings.
“I… I feel the same,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.
For a moment, everything around you faded away—the distant sounds of wildlife, the rustling leaves, even the darkening savanna. It was just the two of you, standing close enough that you could feel the warmth of his body, his presence calming and exciting at the same time.
Chris smiled, and before you could say anything else, he reached for your hand, gently intertwining his fingers with yours. The touch was electric, sending a warmth through your whole body. “I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now, but I wasn’t sure how,” he confessed softly.
You squeezed his hand, your eyes meeting his. “I’m glad you did.”
In that moment, beneath the African sky with the promise of adventure ahead, it felt like everything had fallen into place. Being here, in the wild, sharing this experience with Chris—it was more than you had ever imagined.
He leaned in slightly, his face close enough that you could feel his breath on your skin. “Ready for an unforgettable night?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
You nodded, your heart racing, and as the two of you climbed into the jeep together, hand in hand, you knew that this trip had already become more unforgettable than you ever thought possible.
And it wasn’t just because of the lions.

Still on my dragonborn hyper-fixation bs because of Baldur’s Gate
(in between violently resting my wrist because carpal tunnel *and* cysts popping up right on in there)
Tumblr media
I started this just practicing simplifying different body types, I think I still have a lotta room to improve; but, what this ended up being was trying to see if I could kinda break up my dragonborn designs to have more diverse facial structures based on different creatures.
Going way too in depth under the break (like a lot, be warned)
Shocking no one, I used a little bit of real scientific theory in what I based each chroma pictured here on.
White Dragonborn
Sehkmet is an outlier however because I mostly use monitor lizards for her references and there’s uh, not too many reptiles in the cold areas white dragons usually reside in. But I can apply the volume rule! Which summarized is why there were so many megafauna during ice ages, the more volume an organism possesses, the more efficiently it retains body heat.
Tumblr media
So with more practice honestly, I’d like to get better at drawing her bigger. But essentially in my head, white dragonborn would be the largest chroma of dragonborn on average, Sehkmet herself is just grazing 7’
They have an easier time packing on fat and muscle and can deal with cold weather the best with a dense layer of fur/proto-fur like structure that covers the initial base of scales
Black Dragonborn
What I recall of the normal habitat of black dragons is that it tends to be swampy. I designed a crocodile based black dragonborn a long time ago, and just pulled from there. So I leaned slightly into basing them on piscivorous reptiles. Semi-aquatic adaptations leftover, even if they don’t live on coasts or in marshes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So thick paddle-like tails are considered the norm in black dragonborns, I think a cool trend that’s be popular with younger black dragonborns would be painting the raised flat portions of their tails with bright colors or designs.
Speaking of looks, very shiny scales, any black dragonborns that have fur or feathers would similarly have them very sleek
Much like white dragonborn, they build muscle and fat stores easily, a well-fed black dragonborn could rely on fat stores for almost a year if necessary.
Blue Dragonborn
I’m a bit undecided on blue dragonborn, mainly because I only have designed and played one and don’t know too much about blue dragons off the top of my head, so this is me making stuff up. Since their breath weapon is lightning, I like the idea of leaning towards high altitude animals.
Tumblr media
They don’t have as much pressure to be able to continuously produce a lot of body heat or go without food, so on average, they shed extra fat and muscle quickly if not careful bc fast metabolism.
Very colorful, plumage and frills type, they’re pretty boys I don’t make the rules.
Great eyesight, especially if they lean more bird like. Rip Fara, eyes taken from you too soon (ignore the fact it’s my fault)
Red Dragonborn
I wanted to get a little prehistoric with red dragonborn, canonically red dragons are pretty evil aligned and malicious, so I wanted to make red dragonborns look a little exotic(?). Give them a facial structure that to other species and even dragonborn might be difficult to read (permanent rbf?). Red dragons tend to favor badlands, mesas, and mountains which is very fun.
Tumblr media
Titus is a bit of a special case, he’s got a case of too-hot-ouchie-itis. Aka, the peril from wof treatment. Too hot to touch. But on average, red dragonborn don’t run as warm as would be expected. They’re from hot climates so their bodies wouldn’t need to have gotten good at producing high body heat
On that note, they tend to not be fans of cold weather. Dragonborn aren’t reptilian or cold-blooded, so it doesn’t have any extra negative impact. RDs just tend not to enjoy it
They got beef, muscle development is top tier. A lot of RDs naturally have pretty dense musculature but it’s not the most obvious
I like the idea, with red dragons being pretty quick to violence, that RDs skin is kind of loose around the neck and thicker than most other dragonborn
Gold Dragonborn
Ok, here’s where I had very little to go off. Gold dragons are solitary, regal, and not picky about environment from what I could find. So I said fuck it, they’re snakey, idc if some people have preconceived ideas that snakes are evil. These dragons and dragonborn are snakey. And I also, admittedly, don’t have a lot of ideas of common traits or things like the other chroma as of now ;-;
Anyway, this has been another instance of: *putting too much thought into arbitrary things to justify why I gave a dragonborn a crocodile face and another dragonborn a snake face*

Wild Kratt fans, what sort of animal/topic would you love to see an episode on?
I'm sure there are some creatures that y'all love that you'd love for more to talk about.
Personally, I'd love see an episode on Honeypot Ants or Synanthropes. And Ant Wars are very interesting too!
Honeypot Ants are neat in that they have a special job for some ants who become living food storage. It's pretty weird. Look at how bulbous their backsides can get from all the stored food!
Tumblr media
Another neat ant thing is ant wars! Imagine Chris and Martin getting caught up on opposite sides of an ant war. Leafcutter ants do do war but it didn't come up in the leafcutter ant episode. Ant wars really are neat!
In particular there's species of ants called slave-makings ants that are social parasites that make a different species of ant do work for them! It's wild what sort of things can evolve...
Anyway I think synanthropes are also super interesting! Synanthropy is when wild animals evolve to exist alongside humans. Not domesticated animals! Wild animals! They are animals we can't control that benefit from humans and human settlements.
The coyote episode does touch upon this a bit with showing that coyotes can adapt to cities. But I'd love a whole episode on this kind of topic!
I just love that as much as some humans might try to escape and separate themselves from nature, they can't really escape it. Attempts to create areas just for humans has just created a new kind of habitat that some animals do well in. Like Raccoons, Pigeons, Flies, Cockroaches, Ants, Sparrows, Crows, Rats, And all sorts of other creatures!
Also look into the similar topic of urban ecology.
Here are some Sci-show videos about Synanthropic animals:

The ocean was full of mysteries and secrets that no one has, nor should ever be discovered… the big body of water that was so beautiful yet so terrifying.
You, a regular Victorian girl who enjoyed reading novels under the big tree which sat next to a normal river, finding joy in being able to put yourself into the characters that you read in the book. Feeling as if you were the main character, growing a connection with those around you.
“Y/n, you tend to isolate yourself too much dear… wouldn't you like to spend more time with us? Your family?” Your mother found herself asking, looking directly at you as if she expected you to answer enthusiastically.
Truthfully, no. You were fine being alone and it was when you felt at your best. Being alone in the comfort of your books and imagination.
“If I'm being honest, mother, I do not think that being alone is a burden, as I quite enjoy the silence of going into the forest alone.”
Your mother and sister stared at you, unknowing of what to respond with. You hated the look of pity that they showed towards you, as if enjoying the company of one's self was something that should be looked down upon. The opinion of those older could never be the same as someone younger. The mind was simply at different levels of development, causing disagreements between the two quite regularly.
Looking around at the family who sat around the table, picking yourself up from the chair and grabbing your book from your lap to prevent it from falling.
“I believe I have some important manners to take care of…” you completed, beginning to make your way out of the dining room.
“Y/n, before you go you must be aware of something.” Your dad spoke, catching your attention and causing you to turn around to face him.
“What's wrong?” You responded, somewhat intrigued.
“Because me and your mother have been speaking about a better career opportunity for our company. I wanted to make you aware that next month we'll be moving over to a different town. Not far at most.”
You despised moving… however this time, it would be near an ocean. Meaning you would be capable of observing the same water that your current book, ‘A Hidden Atlantis’ was referencing. The same town and ocean that had been where the novel had taken place.
A Hidden Atlantis was a one of a kind book, you'd truthfully never read anything like it before. The topic of humanoid creatures whose legs resembled that of a fish was always interesting to you.
Something like that could never exist in the real world… could it?
It would only ever be real in paintings, books and imagination. It's place was not the real ocean that was full of mysterious creatures.
However… in the low chance possibility that something like a half human half fish existed. It'd be so beautiful yet terrifying. The same way its habitat was.
Your obsession with these types of mythical chapter books started when you found a ring on the floor of your new (now old) house. You were young, so the red ruby that sat brightly inside the ring wasn't something that appeared valuable to you, it was only ever stunning.
You kept it, never sold it for money… even though it would probably be worth a fortune. You always felt some sort of odd connection to it, causing you to never be capable of selling it. It was too special for you, despite the mystery that could've been a curse that attracted you to it and it's red gem
___
They told you to stay inside, but you found a way out nevertheless. They were silly if they didn't know you well enough to see it coming.
This was the very ocean right outside of your new home. The very ocean that the book described, it was right in front of you along with the same town and streets that the book’s main character walked on before in the history of the novel.
Sirens didn't exist, but maybe you could catch a glimpse of something that slightly resembled that of the mythical creature throughout your stay. It would make sense wouldn't it? Possibly if you were a believer.. but unfortunately you weren't.
Even so, you still enthusiastically made your way to the sandy beach located right under the cliff which your house sat over, finding a comfortable rock to sit on as you opened your book and lit up a candle
The young girl, Sharon left everything behind. From her friends and belongings to her town, all due to financial struggles between her parents. However the kind girl looked at things in another light, becoming understanding of her parents' situation and avoiding internal conflicts between herself and her family.
She took out the box which carried the old jewel inside. Seeing the gem glow bright red, reflecting off the same color as that of her eyes. Staring into the piece made her confident in the color of red, it was a beautiful color that many people associated with the wrong things. It was a treasure, and it made her feel the same connection and reassurance that she had felt since the start… since the first ever day she laid eyes on the ring.
She slipped the ring onto her hand, feeling the jewel slide off of her small fingers. However, she kept it on as she made her way to the dark waters that almost felt as if they awaited her.
She walked the path down the forest, catching a glimpse of the bright moon illuminating the cold ocean. It looked beautiful, almost magical as she walked near. Sitting on a rock and brushing her feet against the water, feeling as if it had been bringing her skin smoothness and youth.
“Beautiful night,” The young girl found herself whispering, as she looked far up into the distance to see the figure of a sunken ship, located right behind a chapped rock.
It’s boards and wood sinking down and dissolving into the water as it overflowed.
The news of the sinking ship was everywhere:
“Ship sank under unidentified circumstances.”
“Ship mysteriously begins sinking in the middle of the sea.”
“An unidentified ship reappears on the shores of...”
It was all over the newspapers, disaster would always be destined to happen.
The light of the fire which illuminated the candle flicker off, the strong winds didn't allow it to keep the fire. It was time to head back home and continue reading inside your room, where the wind couldn't get to you despite your delicate windows. It seemed as if a storm was approaching.
You smiled looking up and at the direct spot that the book described, not spotting a single sunken ship. Even if it was there at one point in history, the likelihood that it was actually the fault of a group of sirens and their enchanting voices and illusions was little to none.
As much as you wanted to believe, you knew something like that could only stay in your imagination. The same way dragons and vampires did. They could never exist in the real world, it would just be too dangerous.
Picking yourself up from the rock, you carefully climbed your way down and allowed the light from your barely lit candle to lead you back.
This ocean was close enough to your house that you were able to see the lights turned on in specific rooms. Best get going now if you hoped to not get caught sneaking out like you were strictly told not to.
Walking on the light sand before feeling your shoe step on something hard…
A rock maybe?
You tilted your head to look below you, bending your knees to get a better look at the object.
It was a ring… a blue diamond ring, washed away on the shore of the ocean. It must've been left behind by some tourist or someone who happened to be traveling the water’s. And really you didn't care to find out, as it was left behind and far too valuable to ignore.
You'd simply treasure it. The same way you did with the red ruby ring that you found in your old house when moving in.
“Y/n!” A young boy called out, running over to hug you tightly, almost as if you hadn't seen each other in a long time.
Turning around, you came face to face with a pretty young boy, beautiful cat shaped eyes that glowed as brightly as the day.
“Jungwon? What are you doing here..!?”
He smiled brightly and picked out a bright yellow dandelion from the grass, gently shoving your hair behind your ear and placing it right in between.
“I came to say hello to a friend,” He responded enthusiastically.
You shook your head and looked up, happier than ever.
“I understand but shouldn't you be with a doctor!?” You questioned to which he responded with a giggle and smirked at you.
“They told me that I should be outside a lot and have fun! So I'm following their instructions!”
Face palming yourself, you looked back up softly and picked up a bright yellow dandelion, mimicking his acts and placing it on his hair right above his ear.
He kept his gaze fixed on you, that was until you picked yourself up from the ground and began running around in the small garden right in front of a noble looking home.
Being a kid himself, he followed and chased you across the garden.
You looked happy… excited… like children…
Finally, your brain snapped back to reality.
“What the hell was that…?” You muttered to yourself, being unable to comprehend the vision that gave you more than just deja vu.
You looked into the dark and gloomy ocean, spotting a figure of a young man looking in your direction. His bright brown eyes which seemed to illuminate more than the moon pierced straight through your soul in an almost terrifying manner.
Shaking your head and rubbing your eyes… you convinced yourself to be seeing things.
You looked back in a panic and there was nothing… no figure… no eyes… simply nothing..
“Of course… I must be lacking sleep…” you managed to stutter, snapping back up to your senses and running back home. After all, not getting caught was your main priority right now.
***
And so the kind girl Sharon ran back home, stumbling upon an object which appeared to be a gem, closely resembling that of her own. The young girl picked up the ring and placed it in her pocket, she couldn't just leave it behind. She'd collect it.
Upon looking into the distance, she found herself staring directly into the eyes of a creature in the ocean.
Her kind heart forced her to yell, “Are you alright dear sailor, do you need assistance?”
However, she received no response…
Chills ran down her spine as he stared at her intensely, not even blinking once throughout the entire process… Sharon, upon feeling uneasy decided to run and make someone aware along the way of a possible sailor that could've been in danger.
Little did she know that she had stared into the eyes of that of the most dangerous…
All because she touched what was his… and you should never touch anything that belongs to a siren…
____
“Jungwon. For dear god’s sake, why are we doing this?”
Jungwon turned around once again and sighed, “For the 100th thousand millionth time, it's because that young lady took my ring. So I'm returning for it.”
“Indeed but this is a bother. Someone's going to find out one way or another and we'll be dead… Why can't we return to the shore and find you another identical ring? There's plenty in the ocean-”
He froze mid sentence upon seeing the eyes of his little brother staring at him. Despite being older, Jungwon intimidated him and he couldn't deny it. Jungwon’s strong point was his eyes and he fully took advantage of that.
“Jake- if you would like to return you can always do so… I didn't need you to come either way-” Jungwon managed to mutter softly.
Jake frowned, “I'll stay with you. I don't want you out here in the human world alone with absolutely no one supervising you.”
Jungwon smiled and nodded, “Alright then, let's make this fast.”
Jake followed his little brother. He had always doubted the connection that Jungwon claimed to have with his ring up until now; more like up until a year ago. Whereas Jungwon dropped his ring while traveling in the oceans at night and was somehow able to find it immediately after he noticed. Retracing his steps and locating the small object in the depths of the massive ocean. Jake was sure that he had a tracker on that thing because that would've been otherwise impossible.
And right now was no exception, in fact it was only convincing Jake furthermore that there must've been a hidden tracker somewhere within the tiny corners of that small ring.
Jake’s frown only turned into an annoyed stare as he watched Jungwon get ahead of himself, leading them to who the heck knew where. “Do you even know what she looked like?”
Jungwon shook his head, still keeping his gaze forward, “Absolutely not.”
Jake sighed, “Why did I expect that… with that keen eyesight of yours I really would've expected you to at least see her hair color.”
“It was dark hyung-” Jungwon completed, noticing Jake nod in agreement.
“I know but for some reason you can spot everything about a person at night except for the thief of your ring… and what if she sold it already?”
Jungwon sighed and shook his head, “I’d rather not think about it but in that case scenario then we'd have to purchase it again-”
Jake stared at Jungwon, “You can't be serious.”
Jungwon turned around, “Should I rephrase that? I'd rather say- I'd have to purchase it again.”
“There's dozens of trade shops on land- how are you gonna locate the exact one!?” Jake asked, almost yelling to which Jungwon backed away nervously and blinked a couple of times before answering.
“I'll find it, don't worry.”
Jake was upset but he wanted to support his brother. That ring was special to Jungwon ever since infancy and he didn't want to say anything rude or careless, let alone both.
“By the way, lower your voice because other people are going to hear you and will suspect us. You're going to throw us both under the bus with your yelling-”
Jake bowed to his little brother and apologized repeatedly, “I'm sorry, it's a little complicated to contain my emotions to a certain volume.”
Jungwon shook his head in denial. “It’d be quite alright if you hadn’t told me earlier that being on land was far too risky. I know just as much as you do so you have to keep in mind that one wrong move could land in us having our heads chopped off,” he expressed, to which Jake simply put his palm up to his forehead.
“Don’t even mention it.”
Suddenly, Jake crashed into a woman who had been walking the same streets they had been, maybe around her early 20’s. Despite the cloak that had been covering her face she looked quite beautiful. Long hair neatly put up in a ponytail and perfectly arranged across her shoulder.
“Oh, I beg your pardon as I was distracted-” Jake stuttered out nervously, noticing her turn around and bow in apology.
Jungwon’s gaze swiftly shifted onto her eyes, his alert up high.
“I apologize- I was a little careless myself.” You chuckled. Jake froze in silence, ultimately overcome by the beauty that he never knew could belong to a human.
Jungwon smiled, “I excuse my older brother- nevertheless what is such a beautiful young woman doing around here alone? Not to mention you yourself look quite of noble status. Is there a reason behind this?”
Suddenly becoming nervous, you began fidgeting with your fingers. “Haha- was it obvious that i’m a noble?” you muttered, to which Jungwon nodded.
“Your clothes and form of speech give it away.”
You laughed ever so slightly and nodded. “You see, I’m actually new to this area and happened to grow curious about exploring the town as the views are spectacular.”
Jungwon looked over to where you turned; the ocean that he himself had belonged to. The cold ocean that had belonged to him and many others who were just like him.
“I see that you are drawn by the landscape?” Jungwon turned over to you, seeing you nod in approval.
“Correct. I don’t come from a very green place like this one, so this feels almost like a wonderland… like those types of forest or villages that you read in fairytales.”
Bingo.
That was all he needed to know… this was her… the girl who had visited the ocean the other day late at night… the thief of his ring that was so very beloved to him.
“I happen to notice that you have a specific love for reading?” Jungwon questioned, noticing your eyes light up as you looked back up at him.
“You seem to be very good at guessing- yes, I very much do love reading books and novels.” you blinked, a little taken aback by how well this stranger seemed to know you.
“I’m glad. I happen to enjoy reading myself.”
You felt some type of odd aura about him.. You were unsure if it was just you overthinking or if this was actually something that you should’ve been concerned about. From the moment he spoke you felt nothing but comfort, you felt safe. Which wasn’t something an ordinary human could’ve made you feel,
~~~
Walking up to a fruit stand, the lady in front smiled at you.
“I’ve never seen you around before, are you new around here?” she asked, making you nod in agreement.
“You’d be correct, I’m not from here, I hope that is alright,” you responded, seeing her nod repeatedly in reassurance to your doubts.
You looked back at the ocean that you felt attracted to for some odd reason. It wasn’t clear to you whether you only felt that way because of your book or because there was actually something magical about it… not to mention the eyes… those eyes that glowed brighter than the moonlight..
“I happen to notice that you really like our water’s?” She smiled, to which you flinched as you didn’t notice her staring.
“I do… may I ask why no families are down there constantly?” you questioned, noticing her give you a confused glance making you panic in case you asked the wrong question. “I’m a little confused because normally there would be a couple of swimmers, no?” you added, your nerves making you unable to say the sentence correctly.
Luckily, she understood you and waved her hand in dismissal.
“Oh dear, it’s prohibited to swim in any waters around here.”
You stayed silent, confused yet amused. “May I ask why…?”
She turned back to look at you, “Oh dear, haven’t you heard? It became banned around the late 1850’s due to the amount of siren spotting there had been. Not to mention the amount of ships that went missing in such a short period of time around this area recently. I feel so poorly for all the families of those navigators..”
Thoughts began circulating in your mind. That wasn’t possible… After all siren’s weren’t real.. They have never been real. They were mythical creatures.
“By the way dear, be very careful with who you trust on this land. Siren’s are very alluring creatures who roam around this town just as freely as regular citizens. Don’t get confident just because we're not in the sea.”
“Wait- siren’s can shapeshift and blend into humanity too?” You exclaimed, almost yelling in surprise before you caught yourself and covered your mouth, lowering your voice to a lower volume.
The woman chuckled, “Why, of course they can.”
“How can I spot a siren…? Among all these humans…?”
She looked around and signaled you to come closer, you followed her orders and leaned in.
“Siren’s will always have attractive and manipulating eyes… never forget that as it may save your life one day.”
~~~
His eyes were gorgeous… almost hypnotizing to look at, you've never seen eyes so gorgeous like his, they seemed almost unreal.
Face to face with a pretty young man, beautiful cat shaped eyes that glowed as brightly as the day.
Face perfect and screaming off the sense of innocence. Almost making you think that this was in fact the reincarnation of the word itself. Which in itself was odd enough,
But you couldn't judge a book by it's cover. After all you weren't even a believer- just a little frightened by something a woman had said earlier. You needed proof of sirens before you actually believed in them, even though there was no way of explaining what you had happened to see down in the shore the other night.
However, his eyes were that of something supernatural and you felt it.
___
You found yourself walking late at night alone in the streets of the town; surrounded by people and their terrified whispers.
“What time did you say sirens come out again?”
“I think I may have just run into a siren- it's eyes look surreal-”
Sirens, surreal looking eyes. Put together it made sense.
Something not human could never fully shapeshift or become a human. There will always be something that gives it away.
However, this was going too far.
“Hey, we meet again.” A voice from behind you called, snatching the magazine from your grip and rolling it up in between his hands.
“Oh- good afternoon..?”
“It would be good night as of right now.” He smiled. You'd be lying if you said you didn't get flustered the moment he did so, seeing him smile with such a handsome face. There was no way you couldn't react.
Smiling back, a bit of pink flushing over your cheeks. “Yes, I apologize. I happened to be making my way back home right now; I hope you can excuse me.”
His face became a small smirk, almost teasing as he looked back at you. “From what I can see, you don't happen to be accompanied by anyone?” He asked, despite your guard going up high, there was no use in lying, you had run into this same man earlier and you had been alone, so you simply nodded.
“Would you like me to come with? Better not get tricked by any sirens.”
You felt your cheeks warm up again, flustered by this man and his alluring personality.
“What did you say your name was again?” You asked, realizing you had never gotten his name in the first place. Unconsciously beginning to walk, making your way back home.
This almost felt familiar….
Sharon walked her way back home with the claimed stranger which she had seen earlier that day.
Questions arose from the young girl's mouth, not anything wrong, at least not to the ears of something so magical and mythical like a siren.
“What was your name again?” Sharon asked in a low pitched muffle.
“I couldn't catch that.” His eyes glew in the dark as his mouth spoke. Something about this man was so alluring and she couldn't catch a grip of what it might've been.
Maybe his attractiveness? His eyes? Seductive and teasing nature perhaps? Everything about him seemed surreal, the way his words were able to manipulate her to make decisions that she wouldn't have made otherwise. It almost seemed effortless.
Sharon smiled nervously, “Your name. I didn't manage to catch it.”
He grinned, “Edward.”
One of the rules about a siren, they only ever said their first names in an introduction, never their last. They didn't have a last name to give, at least not now.
Sharon looked back at the man who walked behind her, his eyes locking on hers as she kept the eye contact for a hot moment. It wasn't willingly, because something about his eyes felt as if there was some type of rope connecting and bonding their souls, as she was unable to look away.
“You have beautiful eyes Edward.” She smiled, noticing him nod knowingly.
“I've been told before, young Sharon.”
It felt odd, they were both young, around each other's age perhaps. It was likely a form of speech however it was still off putting. Sharon could never get used to being called young by someone who looked so young themselves.
“Alright then; Edward, how old are you.”
It was a forbidden question and she knew it. Sirens didn't have an age, at least not that they were aware of. Normally becoming unable to answer the question properly, ending up in them executing their plans earlier than expected, causing a scene that would be far too messy to clean up afterwards.
“Not sure. I was abandoned at a young age and have no idea of when something so basic like my birthday is.” He responded, voice lowering as he turned to his side.
Good answer, Sharon thought. Looking back at the young man and smiling.
“You look fairly young. Edward.”
He was taken aback, he normally disliked the mention of just his first name because of how disrespectful it sounded, and this… this had been the third time she directed him by his first name solely.
He looked at her sharply, “If you could, I'd really appreciate a title in the beginning like Mr before my name.”
The young girl turned around enthusiastically, still skipping towards the direction of her house rapidly as she laughed softly. Her face giving off nothing but innocence.
“But why? Edward is a pretty name. A last name like … would suit you impeccably!” She exclaimed.
“Jungwon.” He answered.
Walking up the pathway which sat on the hill that led up to your house, grass awaiting you at the top.
“Well then, Jungwon do you believe in sirens?” You asked, almost testing him for an unknown reason that not even you knew.
It seemed like he had caught onto this, as he half sighed, half chuckled. “You really can't believe nor not believe in something you haven't seen before. There will always be those who claim to have seen other worldly creatures, you can't believe them, but you can't proclaim them as liars either.” He smiled.
Good answer, you thought.
“Say, Jungwon, how old are you?” You grinned, noticing him do the same.
It's a test, he thought to himself, unable to think of the correct answer if there even was one. As a siren one of their biggest pet pieves was lying. He couldn't even make up something to protect himself unless if he wanted to be looked down on.
“Not sure, I don't even know something so simple like my birthday.” He frowned. You looked back, sincere nostalgia hitting you the moment those words came out from his mouth, however you were unable to pinpoint why or where it was coming from.
“I see,” you added, turning around and looking at him directly.
Unable to hold back, you looked back at him and sighed.
“Do you believe sirens are as evil as humans depict them to be?” You found yourself asking, continuing to walk forward even if the answer he'd give held you anxious.
He grinned and kept his gaze on you, despite not looking at him you could feel his eyes pierced through your skin.
“I think it's similar to humans. There's bad people out there and there's good. I don't see why something so similar should be any different. Sirens are technically human, that's why they don't have too much trouble blending into humanity, they can pull it off rather easily in a matter of fact.”
Your shoulders fell in relief, not even noticing the way they had been so tense.
“I'm glad to hear that,” You smiled, “It’s better to not take guesses about creatures we have never seen or met before.”
He nodded.
“She's different.”
“Well, Jungwon, it looks like we've arrived.”
He nodded and peaked his attention to the house he found himself at.
He had forgotten completely, he was here for a reason and he was going to leave with that one reason fulfilled. He didn't need any doubts.
“It has been an honor my lady.” He leaned down, asking for your hand.
You gave it to him, and he landed a singular kiss on the tip. It was a regular gentleman act at the time, however your cheeks could help but rose and warm up, it was a little shameful to have fallen head over heels for a stranger.
“Yang Jungwon?”
Snapping, he immediately looked up at you.
Yang Jungwon, Yang Jungwon, Yang Jungwon
That name rang in his ear like a bell, repeatedly. What was this? Why did it sound so familiar to him?
“I'll hope to see you another day.” You smiled.
He simply smiled back and waved, nodding in response regarding your statement that had been said a little unexpectedly.
Tears rolled down your cheeks, as you looked at the bed with the pale kid who was at once a healthy boy... your friend.
“I would like to give you this.” He handed the hand which had been clenched shut, holding onto the piece tightly. “I unfortunately don't have much time left, however I would like to give you this. That way if we ever reincarnate again, I'll find you.”
You couldn't contain your emotions, the tears streamed down your face and a wave of emotions hit you.
You entered your home, closing the door behind you while holding your fingers and making your way upstairs to your room. You wanted to take a cold shower before heading off to bed.
Slipping off the coat and relocating it onto a chair that sat in front of your desk. Looking down at your fingers and noticing the bright blue ring missing. Only being left with your original red ruby ring.
You looked everywhere in a panic. Had you dropped it on your way back? It would've been possible as it slipped off of your tiny fingers constantly. It was far too oversized for you.
Suddenly the memory overcame you. He kissed your wrist, in contact with your hand and fingers directly.
Looking out the window, seeing the moon glowing bright blue with a tint of red on a few corners of it. The water in the ocean splashed as if something or someone had just went back in. Enough time has passed, the ring was his priority
Yang Jungwon, who are you?
It was about time, Sharon thought.
There was always going to be different habitats for every living organism. Humans would locate on land, you'd find them there if you ever found yourself searching. Maraine animals would be found in the water, and wild animals would be in the depths of the trees.
Just like marine animals don't belong on land, humans don't belong in the water. The same was wild animals wouldn't belong in the ocean, they wouldn't survive.
It was the same way that the world worked, it was cycle.
Sharon wrote furiously onto the sheets of paper, many stacked up on the side and many scattered on the floor, it was unavoidable to anyone who experienced the same that she had.
The main message the young girl left for anyone and everyone who dared to pick up and look at the contents of this novel which started out as a diary.
History repeats itself. Never doubt it.

So I need to know what animal they think is the batfamilies special interest.
Like we all know they are on the spectrum like look at Bruce. He's a 30 year old man that dresses as a bat and don't get me wrong there are several reasons he dresses as one but it always has something to do with the animal itself and I always think that's funny how it's even used as a joke in several comics, and animated movies/ shows.
So Bruce knows everything about bat's, shape color, species, what food they eat and how they live and even the different culture views on bat's. He could talk all day about it if asked and he always does it with the utmost care. Like he was giving a speech at a gala or speaking to the league.
I think we all know Dicks is obviously Robin's. Cause why else would he choose to be a brightly colored vigilante that's after a bird from the north? I feel like after moving in with Bruce he took a quiz on what bird he would be cause he was studying birds in school and got a Robin and took that to heart as a passion and not only learned everything about a Robin's but that had just become his identity for awhile and he loved it. Bruce when he heard it at first had thought it wouldn't work but after making him his own costume and even watching several videos on the birds he thought it fit his son nicely.
Jason didn't break away from the Robin role and embraces it actually. But he was always way more shy when it came to discussing his favorite. I think he would have a fascination with bugs and snakes and would absolutely be the kid with a spider or a beardy. He once convinced Bruce to get him a baby beardy and then it became an obsession. He had a sweatshirt that even had a cartoonish looking beardy printed on it and he proudly talks about it to any one who asked. Bruce would silently close his eyes and soak in all the information about them he could.
I totally think Tim loves frogs and even sea creatures. He has a tank with shrimp in it and his boyfriend makes fun of him and calls him a shrimp farmer but he also has a tank that has glass frogs in it. It's a huge tank that takes up over half his room and he loves just watching them sleep and even makes cute little tiktoks with them. He always is getting cute things for the habitat and going shopping. He also takes Damian on these trips. Because they both enjoy walking around and even stopping to pet or talk to the people who bring in their dogs. Bruce also enjoys walking into Tim's room and seeing the frogs and shrimp and even says hello to them before leaving again.
Damian is no stranger to having a soft spot for animals but I know he loves cats and dogs. He is definitely a cat person. Alfred the cat is his prized possession and he will proudly take pictures and then draw them. He loves using his animals as drawing references and has multiple books filled to the brim of just them. Sometimes if they are really good he goes to Bruce and asks them to be laminated so he can hang them up in his room because they deserve to be celebrated and respected. He also tells Bruce odd facts about his animals. How Alfred (the cat) specifically likes to sleep on his left side and enjoys being scratched behind his ears the most.
Bruce loves his weird sons because he is weird and for Christmas he always gets them something related to their animals because it's like a bonding experience for them. Some days they don't even talk about anything but their animals but I can imagine them all settling on a couch and out of pure bordem putting on documentaries and spending time just listening and learning. Of course this could also lead into some heated debates about who's animals is the best.
Jason: no you don't understand
Damian: *scoffs* actually Todd you never understood anything
Dick: ok well I set the whole thing for Robin soooo
Tim: oh please you were eight!!
Bruce: I think we are forgetting how bats-
Kids: *groan because they have been hearing about bat's for over half their lives and are tired*
Alfred just walks in and smiles as he sets a pitcher down.
Alfred: actually you are forgetting how important bee's are to the environment. Which is why I plant only the best pollinator friendly flowers
Cue to everyone rioting cause after all this time Alfred has never talked about the fact he is in fact a bee guy. Ever since he started working for the Wayne's they let him have full control of the gardens and he always loved that in the bleak of Gotham he had his own personal eden with the flowers. Bruce's parents also appreciated him for this and would let Alfred do as he pleased when he would passionately talk to them about the bees. Even when they passed away Bruce had always assumed Alfred just did it because he didn't trust anyone else.
Which was part way true but he loves watching them bumble around and bump into each other as he works.
If anyone knows what Duke, steph, and Cass would like please comment or feel free to debate!! Just please remember to be nice and save the bees 🐝

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained 244
Brought to you by a marine biologist
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Today's creature feature is the last invertebrate we will cover for now. Who knows what other exciting and weird inverts AC will include next? Though, if we know anything for sure about AC now, it's that they choose their aquatic collectibles based heavily on their stomachs. Today's friend, the Ornate Spiny Lobster (Panulirus ornatus) (gonna call this guy "OSL" from now on), is one such delicacy, though this one is well taken care of by the people who raise them, fish for them, and rely on them. Let's get into some feel-good fishery news, shall we?
Tumblr media
The OSL was available in ACPC for a very short time in September 2023 for the Rock Lobster Goals. The September time frame makes sense when you consider their breeding migration starts in August and they arrive at their spawning grounds in November-ish. So the OSLs in ACPC were just passing through, it seems! The ACPC sprite is pretty impressive and looks just like the real thing. They even got the carapace spots and the red on the antenna. Beautiful work!
"Rock lobster" is another name for spiny lobsters but...they are not true lobsters. You can read up on that here when we covered ACNH's Spiny Lobster, which was the Japanese Spiny Lobster. In a nutshell, spiny lobsters are large crustaceans that lack the claws true lobsters have. Instead, they have very long, bumpy antenna they use to feel around their reef habitats and scrape against their carapace to scare off predators. The OSL is widespread in shallow waters all across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea south to South Africa, all the way to Japan south to Fiji! Their center of biomass (generally meaning where you can find the bulk of the species' population) seems to be around Indonesia. They are also just as valuable and tasty as true lobsters, so they support important fisheries and aquaculture in Indonesia where they are the country's most valuable fishery resource!

Usually with anything that has to do with food production, we're always 10 steps behind on doing the right thing. Let's not get into the issues with any type of mono-culture farming, in and outside of the facility, land or sea. BUT, the aquaculture for the OSL is actually pretty special. Human and lobster benefit from the farming arrangement in Indonesia. Artificial reefs were set up to attract the "pre-juveniles", or the puerulus stage which is right before they settle to the seafloor, called "seed lobsters". The reefs help juvenile survivorship and people come scoop up some of the seed lobsters to grow them out in aquaculture to then, of course, eat and sell. But this helps to conserve the wild adults so they can keep spawning and making new lobsters! The babies get some comfy homes, too.
It's too bad Indonesia set up laws basically banning this practice. It doesn't make too much of a difference to the lobsters, but it does hurt the people that relied on them for income (though people are fishing for seed lobsters anyway). Hopefully they will or have reversed that!
And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?

As part of my delve into the magic system for Fantasy Worlds Collide, I explored misc magic questions based on the Abyssal Realm. This is a look of the rules and logic behind the magic system.
Tumblr media
Are the laws of nature and physics actually different in this world (to accommodate magic), or are they the same as in real life? How does magic fit in? How do magical beasts fit in?
The laws of nature and physics in the Abyssal Realm are fundamentally different from those in the real world, shaped to accommodate the pervasive influence of magic. Gravity, energy, and matter operate in conjunction with magical forces, creating a world where spells, enchanted items, and supernatural phenomena are intrinsic to daily life. Magic serves as both a tool and a foundation for reality, acting as a stabilizing force that holds the realm together. In this world, the manipulation of elements, summoning of creatures, and bending of space-time are governed by a blend of scientific principles and arcane laws unique to the Abyssal Realm. This allows magic to coexist with and even enhance technological advancements, creating a society where arcane and mechanical innovation go hand in hand.
Magical beasts in the Abyssal Realm are direct manifestations of the world’s altered physical and metaphysical rules. These creatures, ranging from infernal predators to ethereal guardians, are products of magic’s influence on evolution and natural selection. Their biology often defies conventional logic, such as fire-breathing organs, telepathic communication, or the ability to phase through solid matter. Magical beasts are deeply integrated into the realm’s ecosystems, playing roles as predators, prey, and even symbiotic partners to intelligent races. Their existence is a testament to the fluid boundaries between natural and supernatural in the Abyssal Realm.
If there are imaginary animals (dragons, unicorns, etc.), how do they fit into the ecology? What do they eat? How much habitat do they require? Are they intelligent and/or capable of working spells, talking, etc.?
Imaginary animals in the Abyssal Realm, such as dragons and nightmare beasts, play significant roles in the ecological balance. Dragons, for example, are apex predators that require vast territories filled with magical energy, which they consume alongside physical sustenance like livestock or rare mineral deposits. Unicorns, on the other hand, thrive in enchanted forests, feeding on magical flora and acting as guardians of purity and balance. The habitats for such creatures are highly specialized and often infused with magical properties, creating unique biomes that sustain both their physical and mystical needs.
The intelligence of these creatures varies widely. Dragons are often depicted as sentient beings capable of speech, spellcasting, and even forming alliances or rivalries with other intelligent races. Unicorns possess a more instinctual intelligence, though they can communicate telepathically or through empathic bonds. Other magical beasts may lack full sentience but exhibit highly advanced behaviors, such as strategic hunting or the ability to evade magical traps. These creatures are not only part of the realm’s biodiversity but also integral to its cultural, spiritual, and magical traditions.
Where did civilization begin? What directions did it spread? How was its development affected by the presence of magic? The presence of non-human races, if any? The direct or indirect action of the gods?
Civilization in the Infernal Realm began during the Days of Creation, with Lucifer forming the seven Infernal Kingdoms in ÌNƒ 4 as embodiments of the Deadly Sins: Pride, Wrath, Lust, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, and Sloth. Each kingdom’s culture, governance, and infrastructure reflected its associated sin, creating unique social hierarchies and systems of power. In ÌNƒ 20, Lucifer appointed the Princes of Hell—fallen angels who once served Heaven—as rulers of these kingdoms, transforming them into thriving centers of demonic activity and further advancing the growth of civilization.
The development of the Infernal Realm was deeply influenced by magic, which permeates every aspect of life, from architecture and industry to governance and warfare. Infernal sorcery enabled grand feats, such as gravity-defying structures and magically enhanced technology, while magical pacts ensured loyalty within governance. Non-human races, primarily demons and magical beasts, played critical roles as laborers, warriors, and resources. As civilization expanded outward from the Infernal Throne, competition among the Princes spurred trade, infrastructure, and innovation, while divine interventions, including Lucifer’s guidance and the Princes’ rivalries, ensured that the realm’s growth reflected his vision of sin, ambition, and chaos.
In what ways can magic or spells be abused? How often does this happen?
Magic in the Abyssal Realm can be abused in numerous ways, from manipulating others’ free will to causing widespread destruction. Spells that tamper with the mind, such as compulsions or memory alterations, are particularly dangerous, as they can strip individuals of their autonomy. Additionally, necromancy and blood magic are often exploited to create armies of the undead or to extend life at the cost of others. Large-scale abuses, such as summoning catastrophes or altering natural laws, threaten the delicate balance of the realm and can have devastating consequences for entire regions.
The frequency of magical abuse depends on the societal structure and enforcement of laws. In areas governed by strict magical regulations, such abuses are rare but still occur in secret or through black-market dealings. In lawless regions or those dominated by corrupt powers, magical abuse is far more common, with powerful individuals using their abilities to dominate and oppress others. The constant presence of such risks ensures that magic remains both a boon and a potential curse for the Abyssal Realm.
Which peoples/races/cultures are considered the most civilized? Which are most technologically advanced? Which are most magically advanced? Least advanced? Is magic legal? All magic, or only some types? Do laws vary widely from country to country, or is the attitude generally similar?
The demons of Pride are considered the most civilized in the Abyssal Realm, with their intricate social hierarchies and emphasis on destiny manipulation and governance. The technologically advanced races include those aligned with Greed, who specialize in crafting enchanted devices and tools. Magically, the Drudes of Envy and the Ifriti of Wrath are the most advanced, capable of wielding illusions and destructive fire magic with unparalleled precision. In contrast, the Cambions of Sloth are the least advanced, hindered by their apathy and lack of ambition.
The legality of magic varies widely. In kingdoms like Pride, magic is strictly regulated to maintain order, while in Wrath, it is often weaponized and encouraged for warfare. Certain types of magic, such as necromancy or mind control, may be universally outlawed, while others are celebrated or even mandatory for societal participation. These attitudes reflect the values and priorities of each kingdom, creating a patchwork of laws across the Abyssal Realm.
What wild animals, actual or imaginary, live in this area? Are any of them potentially useful—e.g., for fur, whale oil, hides, magical ingredients, hat feathers?
The Abyssal Realm is home to a mix of real and fantastical creatures, each with unique adaptations to the magical environment. Infernal hounds, shadow serpents, and magma lizards are common predators, while luminous moths and fire-resistant deer populate enchanted forests. Many of these creatures provide valuable resources, such as hides imbued with magical resistance, feathers that enhance spellcasting, or venom used in alchemical potions. Some are hunted for their rarity, while others are domesticated for their utility.
However, exploiting these animals is not without risk. Many possess defenses—both natural and magical—that make hunting or harvesting dangerous. Additionally, overexploitation can disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems, leading to unintended consequences. As a result, sustainable practices and magical conservation efforts are becoming increasingly important in the Abyssal Realm.
Are there magical beasts, like dragons and unicorns? If so, which ones? How many? Are they common, or are some endangered species? Have any been domesticated?
Magical beasts such as dragons, unicorns, and phoenixes thrive in the Abyssal Realm, each occupying a specific niche within the ecosystem. Dragons, for instance, are rare and highly territorial, their numbers dwindling due to habitat loss and conflict with intelligent races. Phoenixes, with their ability to reincarnate, are elusive and highly sought after for their feathers, which hold immense magical power.
Some magical beasts have been domesticated, though this is a challenging and often dangerous process. Infernal hounds are commonly trained as guardians, while lesser draconic creatures, such as wyverns, serve as mounts or beasts of burden. Domestication often involves intricate spells and rituals to ensure loyalty and safety. Despite these efforts, many magical beasts remain wild and untamed, embodying the raw power and mystery of the Abyssal Realm.
Are there magical artifacts (rings, swords, etc.)? If so, who makes them and how? Are the spells permanent, or do they wear off after a while?
The Abyssal Realm brims with magical artifacts, each tailored to the sin and dominion of its creator. Archdemons forge these artifacts, embedding them with their celestial remnants and corrupting them with infernal energy. The process often involves rituals at nexus points of the Abyssal Realm, where the fabric of reality is thinnest, enabling them to channel the ambient chaos. Weapons like Noctemaris, imbued with time and space manipulation, and rings that siphon power or bestow illusory control, are prime examples. These creations demand significant sacrifices, such as shards of the creator’s essence or enslaved souls, to imbue their dark enchantments. The spells on these artifacts are typically permanent, but their potency wanes with prolonged use unless the user replenishes the energy through sacrifices or alignment with the artifact’s inherent sin.
However, not all artifacts retain their permanence without consequence. If misused or left untended, they may erode or even rebel against their wielders, becoming volatile. For instance, a sword bound to Wrath might erupt uncontrollably, harming its master. This intricate balance between power and cost reflects the Abyssal Realm's ethos—great power demands even greater sacrifices, often leading to the artifact and its wielder’s mutual destruction.
Where is scientific and/or magical research done — universities, private labs, under the auspices of the ruler/government, etc.?
Scientific and magical research in the Abyssal Realm is fragmented, reflecting the individualistic and chaotic nature of its society. Each kingdom fosters research aligned with its ruling sin. For instance, the Kingdom of Greed houses sprawling private labs funded by imps and hobgoblins obsessed with alchemical wealth creation. The Kingdom of Pride boasts grandiose institutions resembling celestial universities, where Demons of Fate manipulate time and destiny through rigorous arcane studies. Conversely, in the Kingdom of Lust, research unfolds in secluded sanctuaries, blending seduction and sorcery to amplify emotional manipulation.
The rulers of the Abyssal Realm, the Archdemons, control major breakthroughs, often steering research to enhance their dominance. However, rogue practitioners frequently undermine these efforts, conducting illicit experiments far from the rulers' gaze. Collaboration between kingdoms is rare, with inter-factional espionage being rampant. Despite this disarray, the Abyssal Realm remains a blend of innovation, albeit one driven by self-interest rather than collective advancement.
Given the magical/technological level of this society, what is an appropriate ration of farmers or food producers to urban residents? If farm production is based on magic, how many urban residents are going to starve if the spells supporting farming (weather, land fertility, etc.) fail suddenly?
In a society dependent on both magic and technology, the ratio of farmers to urban residents is likely skewed heavily in favor of urban dwellers, as magical enhancements can dramatically boost agricultural efficiency. A single magically enhanced farmer, supported by spells for weather control, soil fertility, and pest management, could potentially feed hundreds or even thousands of people. In such a system, the ratio might be as low as 1:500 or even 1:1000. However, this reliance introduces extreme vulnerability; if the spells fail—due to sabotage, magical backlash, or natural disasters—entire urban populations could face starvation within weeks. Without magical support, the over-urbanized society would lack the infrastructure or knowledge base to revert to traditional farming methods quickly enough to prevent mass famine.
To mitigate such risks, societies might maintain reserves of non-magical farming equipment, heirloom seeds, or establish emergency contingency plans. Some regions might even enforce laws requiring a portion of arable land to be cultivated using traditional means to act as a buffer against magical failures. However, in an environment where food production collapses due to magical disruptions, social unrest would likely ensue, exacerbated by existing inequalities in access to resources.
What are the major political factions at present? How long have they been around? Which factions are allies, which enemies? Are there any potential new forces on the political scene (e.g., a rising middle class, a university gaining unexpected power because of certain magical discoveries, etc.)
The major political factions in this society could include longstanding powers such as noble houses, magical guilds, and merchant alliances, as well as newer forces like technocratic councils or revolutionary populist movements. Noble houses may dominate traditional politics, leveraging inherited wealth and magical artifacts, while magical guilds act as intermediaries between the mystical and mundane. Merchant alliances thrive on trade, especially of rare magical and technological goods, maintaining power through economic leverage. These factions have existed for centuries, with shifting alliances based on shared interests or mutual threats.
Emerging forces could include a burgeoning middle class empowered by technological advancements, potentially challenging aristocratic dominance. Universities discovering groundbreaking magical applications gain influence, creating tension with both established magical guilds and traditionalists. Religious factions reassert themselves, seeking to outlaw "corrupted" technologies or magics they deem heretical in the name of the Archdemons.
Are magicians a force in politics, or are they above it? Are there national politics that revolve around magic/wizards (i.e., trying to outlaw, protect, or promote certain kinds of magic, trying to draft wizards into a ruler’s army, licensing of magicians, etc.)? Do wizards have a lobby? Do they need one?
Magicians occupy a dual role in politics, acting both as participants and arbiters above mundane concerns. High-ranking magicians often influence national policies, either as advisors to rulers or through direct involvement in governance. Their ability to manipulate resources and secure advantages for allied factions makes them indispensable, but it also fosters resentment among non-magical populations. National policies might include licensing magicians, restricting dangerous forms of magic, or drafting wizards into military service. For example, certain nations may require magicians to register their abilities and submit to oversight to prevent abuses of power.
Magicians may organize into guilds or lobbying groups to protect their interests, negotiating exemptions from laws or advocating for funding for magical research. These organizations could wield significant political clout, but they also face opposition from anti-magic factions, which might seek to regulate or diminish their influence. Whether magicians need a lobby depends on the societal view of magic; in a world where magic is revered, they may operate without much opposition. However, in societies skeptical of magic’s role, such groups would be essential for securing their rights and privileges.
How much has the presence of magic affected strategy and tactics in general? Is magic used primarily for intelligence gathering (spells of invisibility, scrying, etc.), or are there spells that are of use on the battlefield (summoning a demon to attack the enemy, casting fire storms at them, etc.)? If battlefield magic is possible, how can it be defended against?
Magic profoundly shapes both strategy and tactics in the Abyssal Realm. Its presence has revolutionized intelligence gathering, with spells like scrying, invisibility, and telepathic surveillance allowing commanders to anticipate enemy movements and preemptively counter them. Archdemons and other infernal entities often use temporal and spatial manipulation to create strategic advantages, though such powers come at significant cost. Magic is also integral to communication across vast distances, enabling coordinated efforts between distant infernal armies. Within the Kingdoms of Pride and Envy, fate manipulation and illusionary tactics are deployed to disrupt enemy plans and instill paranoia among opposing forces.
On the battlefield, destructive magic plays an equally pivotal role. Spells like firestorms, infernal summons, and shadow manipulation can decimate enemy ranks or alter the terrain to impede movement. Wrath demons, for example, unleash uncontrollable flames to engulf foes, while Drudes from the Kingdom of Envy sow discord with nightmare illusions. Defensive measures against battlefield magic include magical wards, counterspells, and enchanted armor designed to resist specific elemental or psychological attacks. Some realms also employ sorcerers and strategists adept at neutralizing enemy spells, creating a constant arms race of magical innovation and countermeasures.
Is healing generally a magical process? If so, how does the magical healing talent work? Does a magical healer have to consciously direct the healing process (meaning that lots of knowledge of anatomy, etc., would be required), or does magical healing simply speed up the normal, unconscious healing process in the patient? Is there more than one kind of magical healer (as there are surgeons, eye doctors, etc.)? Are there both magical and non-magical healers, and if so, are they rivals or simply different specialties?
Healing in the Abyssal Realm is primarily a magical process, though the methods vary across the kingdoms. Magical healers channel their energy to mend wounds, often requiring a deep understanding of anatomy and infernal physiology. In some kingdoms, healing is an instinctive act, accelerating natural regeneration processes, as seen with Archdemons’ demonic healing. Other healers, particularly in the Kingdoms of Sloth and Lust, specialize in restorative magic that affects both body and mind, soothing pain and emotional anguish. Each healer’s ability is influenced by their demonic nature; for instance, Ifriti healers focus on mitigating fire damage while Cambions ease lethargy and restore vitality.
Non-magical healing practices also exist, often blending herbalism and alchemical techniques. Apothecaries and surgeons are particularly valued in the Kingdoms of Gluttony and Greed, where physical wounds from consumption or greed-induced conflicts are common. While magical and non-magical healers coexist, tensions occasionally arise, with magical practitioners viewed as superior in realms where power and dominance are prized. However, in realms like Pride, where knowledge is paramount, non-magical healers are respected for their intricate understanding of infernal anatomy and innovative medical techniques.
What level is medicine at? Who are the healers? Do you have to have a talent to heal, or just training? Who trains healers, herbalists, apothecaries, surgeons, magical vs. nonmagical healers, etc.?
The level of medicine in the Abyssal Realm varies widely, influenced by the sin governing each kingdom. In realms like Pride and Envy, medicine is advanced, with healers undergoing rigorous training in both magical and non-magical disciplines. Pride's healers study under Fate Demons who incorporate destiny manipulation to predict and prevent illnesses. Conversely, Wrath’s medicine focuses on emergency treatments for battlefield injuries, with healers trained in rapid regeneration and cauterization techniques. Herbalists, apothecaries, and surgeons typically apprentice under experienced practitioners, learning both traditional remedies and magical applications.
Healer training emphasizes specialization. Magical healers often require innate talent, honed through extensive practice, while non-magical healers rely on meticulous study and experimentation. The Kingdoms of Sloth and Greed have thriving apothecaries who craft potions that blend alchemy and enchantments. In contrast, Lust’s healers focus on emotional and psychological restoration, aiding those suffering from obsessive desires or manipulative trauma. Cooperation between healers of varying specialties is common, but rivalry persists in realms like Greed, where competition for resources drives innovation and discord alike.
Is forensic magic possible? Commonly used? Used only for certain types of crimes (and if so, what)? Are the results of forensic spells admissible in court as evidence? Is it something any wizard can do, or do you have to specialize?
Forensic magic is a critical tool in the Abyssal Realm, especially in kingdoms where law and order maintain a tenuous hold over chaotic impulses. It is commonly used to investigate crimes such as betrayal, murder, and theft of infernal artifacts. Spells like scrying, memory extraction, and spectral analysis allow investigators to uncover hidden truths. In the Kingdom of Pride, forensic magic often incorporates destiny manipulation to reconstruct events, while Envy’s investigators use shadow magic to expose hidden motives. These spells are admissible in infernal courts, though their validity may be contested in realms like Wrath, where chaos often overrides strict legal processes.
Specialization is necessary for forensic magic, with practitioners undergoing rigorous training to master their craft. Not every mage can wield forensic spells; expertise requires an understanding of magical signatures, infernal psychology, and the laws governing each kingdom. While forensic magic is widely respected, its use is limited in certain realms, like Sloth, where inertia hampers enforcement. Additionally, overuse of forensic spells risks corrupting the investigator’s mind with the emotional residue of the crimes they probe, making forensic magic a double-edged sword in the pursuit of justice.
Are there separate civil and criminal courts? Human and non-human courts? Is there a separate court or procedure for magical crimes? What is different about each type of court? Are judges or other court officials required/forbidden to know magic? Is evidence obtained by magic acceptable in court? Is evidence obtained by magic considered more reliable or less reliable than physical evidence or eyewitness accounts?
The Abyssal Realm features a complex judicial system divided into civil, criminal, and magical courts, each catering to distinct cases influenced by the unique nature of the infernal realm. Civil courts focus on disputes between demons, often involving contracts, territorial claims, or betrayals. These courts are governed by rigidly enforced rules that prioritize power dynamics and cunning over fairness, with verdicts heavily influenced by the demon's standing and alliances. Criminal courts handle transgressions like treachery against the Archdemons or violations of the realm's core principles, such as attempts to escape the sin-based system or sabotaging another kingdom's influence. Punishments in criminal courts often involve fates worse than death, such as eternal servitude or torment within a personal hell tailored to the offender's worst fears.
Magical courts exist separately to address crimes involving forbidden magic, tampering with fate, or destabilizing the realm's fabric. These courts are overseen by Archdemons or their appointed enforcers, as the misuse of magic directly threatens the Abyssal Realm's precarious balance. Evidence obtained through magic is admissible but scrutinized for authenticity, as even the most reliable spells can be tampered with in a realm where deception is an art. Judges and officials in magical courts are typically required to possess magical expertise to evaluate such evidence effectively, though the use of magic during trials is forbidden to prevent further corruption of the proceedings. While physical evidence is seen as more reliable in civil and criminal courts, magical evidence holds sway in magical courts, given its role in exposing the unseen manipulations of infernal forces.
Can magic be used in the arts, and if so, how — paint that glows, pictures that move, flutes that play themselves, etc.? How do “normal” artists feel about this? Is there a separate branch of purely magical art, such as illusion?
Magic is integral to the arts in the Abyssal Realm, manifesting in mesmerizing forms that blend infernal creativity with arcane power. Paintings that shift with the viewer's perspective, sculptures imbued with auras that evoke specific emotions, and music that materializes vivid illusions are common examples of magical artistry. Instruments like self-playing flutes and glowing inks enchanted to pulsate with life are celebrated as symbols of demonic ingenuity. These magical creations often reflect the essence of the sin governing the artist's kingdom, such as fiery depictions in Wrath or haunting melodies in Envy. The arts are not merely for aesthetics; they serve as tools for manipulation, propaganda, and the assertion of power.
"Normal" artists, who rely solely on skill without magical enhancement, often find themselves overshadowed but are occasionally admired for their purity and dedication. Some realms foster a rivalry between the two, with traditional artists forming exclusive circles to preserve their craft. A separate branch of magical art, known as "illusory art," thrives, emphasizing transient creations that exist only as long as the spell endures. These ephemeral works are valued for their fleeting beauty and the emotional impact they leave behind. While magical art dominates the Abyssal Realm, the tension between tradition and innovation fuels a dynamic and ever-evolving cultural landscape.

Fall 8, Year 1 Some time during the night, a phenomenon occurred; a Stone Owl statue appeared on Avalon Farm. As the Wizard Magnus is the protector of the valley, he set out to investigate where it appeared. When he arrived, he heard a commotion unlike anything he had ever heard before. At first he though the full coop was the source, before he started to look around. All the debris and trees were cleared, as were the huge stumps and logs, and boulders. Then he found the commotion. Across the river bisecting the farm, the local peryton had found the Stone Owl first. Whatever magical phenomenon occurred to spawn it here must've registered as an intruder to Beep. (Marlon had told him the locals had given the peryton a name) The deer look-a-like had ruffled his fur all along his neck and spine, tail fully bristled. Wings splayed out in what would be typical of a threat display. But something was wrong. There was an... aura. One that didn't feel like anything ever felt during the Wizard's travels. And the normal blue of Beep's eyes were replaced with darkness. This peryton was more than outside of the usual habitat. How did it come to this world? Why? This discovery lead to many more questions. As of now; This creature had shown itself to be harmless to the locals, and no threat to the safety of the Valley... so far. There was no need to alert Marlon just yet...... ——— Shoving a bit of my fursona's lore into this because idk. Maybe this'll explain how the Weird Ass Deer got here in the first place. Maybe I'll do a secret side plot that has nothing to do with Stardew Valley, Expand Dong or not, for the fuck of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fuck if I know. I'm bullshitting any lore or character interactions beyond the log as I write the description. I put literally little-to-no forethought into the "plot" of this au. I am not a smart deer. ——— Things different from canon; (AU???) Gramps never had an heir, or they never show/ed up. Special new farm map; Frontier Farm! Stardew Valley Expanded; new maps, new NPCs, new events, a LOT of new stuff. The new “Farmer” is just a Weird Ass Deer. NPCs will respond/react accordingly. This is my first time playing Stardew Valley Expanded, so I’m learning as I go. (Please no spoilers if you play SVE)

A 6-Month Old Red Panda, Shot by Joel Sartore for National Geographic's Photo Ark Project, Aiming to Document all Animal Species Living in Captivity Around the World. Photograph - by Joel Sartore, National Geographic Photo Ark
When is a ‘Panda’ Not a Panda - & Are Any Pandas Actually Bears? - by Simon Ingram | The National Geographic - Animals | 11th/03/2022
The Diminutive Red Panda is Now the Star of its Own Film. But What Does it Have in Common With its Bigger Namesake - & are Either of Them Related to Bears? Here we Delve into one of the Most Etymologically Tricky Names in the Animal Kingdom.
Say 'panda' and immediately your mind goes big, fluffy, rare—and monochrome. But the infamously partner-picky, bamboo-chewing giant panda endemic to a sliver of China isn't the only creature to answer to the name.
There are in fact two distinct species that share this iconic title: the giant, and the red panda. But were you presented with a lineup and told to indicate the ‘panda’, one would stick out like a sore, rather red thumb. Despite it actually being the creature most entitled to the name.
Turning Red. Or Black & White?
Firstly, the most obvious difference. At a standing height of five to six feet and a weighing up to 250 pounds (113 kg), the giant panda—and its higher altitude, slightly slighter subspecies the Qinling panda—is roughly comparable to a stocky, weighty human.
The red panda, however, is roughly comparable to a weighty house cat. The giant panda looks like a black bear in a costume; the red panda looks like a racoon that's gone rusty. Complete with a resplendent, ringed tail, cheese-wedge ears and pointed snout, the red panda is thoroughly cute—but in a way that's thoroughly unlike the other creature with which it shares the ‘p’ word. But is it simply a case of lazy name-calling? Not quite.
Tumblr media
Turning Red, the new film from Disney-Pixar, follows Mei Lee, a teenager whose developing emotions cause her to transform into a (rather large) red panda. (The Walt Disney Company is majority owner of National Geographic.) Disney-Pixar
Red in tooth and claw
The word ‘panda’ has an ambiguous origin, but one theory is that it is from either the Nepali nigalya ponya (‘bamboo eater’) or paja (‘claw’). One thing is certain, however— it was applied to the red panda first.
The animal was described by French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier in 1825, who added the scientific name Ailurus fulgens, literally, ‘shining cat.’ Not unforgivably, Cuvier judged the red panda as being a particularly anti-social member of the raccoon family.
“The red pandas are solitary and shy animals,” says Ang Phuri Sherpa, Nepal country director for conservation group The Red Panda Network. “They can be found in pairs at the time of their mating, and when cubs are accompanied by a mother.” Ang Phuri says the panda's name could have originated from another Nepali word, punde, which means ‘having white marks on their face,’ adding: “It is true in terms of etymology that red panda is the only ‘true’ panda.”
While pandas both giant and red share a common name, given their obvious physical differences you might expect them to not share a scientific name. Confusingly, they almost do. The giant panda's genus is Ailuropoda—which in this case means ‘cat-foot’, rather than simply ‘cat’.
And it's in the foot that these apparently dissimilar creatures share one of two fascinating common features: the ‘false thumb’, or modified sesamoid digit. These specially evolved front paws, each with an elongated wrist bone, allows the animals to manipulate the principle ingredient of their second common feature: diet. Both animals eat bamboo, and have developed this physical trait geared to gripping those tubular stalks, a phenomenon of adaptation to a shared environment known as convergent evolution.
This dietary quirk & their shared habitat in moist, misty mountainous areas of China certainly gives the 2 pandas something to talk about.
But are they related?

While not nearly as famous as their larger namesakes, red pandas have faced similar threats from habitat loss & hunting for pelts. This use of the resplendent fur is reminiscent of the ‘'coonskin hat’ made famous by American frontiersmen like Daniel Boone & Davy Crockett - underlining the red panda's perceived association with the raccoon.  Photograph - by JOSEPH F. Bearing up
The plot thickens when we consider how the giant panda got its name. It was a French missionary and naturalist named Père Armand David who, whilst roaming the Baoxing county in China's Sichuan Province, first brought the animal to western attention—in 1869, when he saw the shot carcass of a 'whitebear', as he called it. “I believe it to be a new species, not only because of its skin color, but also because of the hair beneath its feet and other characteristics,” he wrote in his journal.
To Armand David it certainly resembled a bear, with its bulky, shambling gait and thick fur. The locals called it a panda—it ate bamboo, after all—but Armand David disagreed, classifying it Ursus melanoleucus, or ‘black-white bear’. Excited by his find, he began a correspondence with Alphonse Milne-Edwards, a French zoologist, to whom he sent a pelt and a skull for inspection.
Furry fossils
Milne-Edwards questioned the strange creature's classification, claiming the skull, teeth and claws made it more physiologically aligned with a certain red haired, bamboo-eating member of the raccoon family described 40 years before—though clearly having climbed a good way along its own evolutionary branch. Publishing a description in his Recherches pour servir l’histoire naturelle des mammifčres, Milne-Edwards reclassified it accordingly as Ailuropus melanoleucus to reflect what he saw as at least a dotted line to the red panda.
Tumblr media
China's Sichuan province, home of both the giant panda and the red panda. The latter's habitat is wider, stretching from Nepal in the west to China's Yunnan province as well as Sichuan. In 2020 it was found this has enabled two distinct subspecies of red panda to evolve, which diverged around 250,000 years ago—the more vibrant Chinese red panda, and the paler Himalayan red panda.  Photograph by Ami Vitale, National Geographic Image Collection
Tumblr media
The argument rumbles on. More recently DNA and molecular studies have yielded contradictory results—with some claiming the pandas are in no way related to each other, and others suggesting giant pandas are true bears. Some claim red pandas are actually fancy mustelids—a family that includes weasels, badgers, wolverines, martens and polecats—and that both panda varieties have a streak of raccoon in there somewhere.
What seems unanimous is that neither animal sits contentedly into any group, with both often described as ‘living fossils’—the last of a particularly adventurous evolutionary line.
The red panda today remains in its very own family, Ailuridae. So too the giant panda, which—while firmly now in the family Ursidae (bears)—retains its unique genus of Ailuropoda. Both continue to be argued over, but with the uneasy consensus that both animals and all their speculated relatives likely shared a common, unfathomably ancient and mysterious ancestor. So heated has the subject around both pandas' place in the animal kingdom that it has prompted wider discussions around what features should be considered as taxonomic dealbreakers when classifying an animal.
In his 1993 book on the subject, The Last Panda, naturalist George B. Schaller acknowledged the classification argument with the peerlessly pithy: “When giving a lecture, I am often asked at the end whether the giant panda is a bear or raccoon. To keep my reply brief, I usually answer, ‘The panda is a panda.’”
Relative fame
So were the lines between the species boiled down, you could argue the giant panda is a bear, but not a panda—and the red panda is a panda, but not a bear.
While red pandas are getting a showcase of sorts in the Disney-Pixar movie Turning Red, there's no question the giant panda is the more iconic of the pair—despite the smaller animal facing its own very real challenges. Classified as endangered by the IUCN due to its declining population, the diminutive forest-dweller has suffered many of the same fates as its bigger namesake. “Their biggest threats in the wild are we, the human being,” says Ang Phuri Sherpa. “Their survival in the wild is highly [related to] the human-induced causes like deforestation and degradation of their habitats, poaching, illegal smuggling, and trade of their skin or pelts.” It's thought around 10,000 individuals remain in the wild.
Tumblr media
As for the giant panda, following decades of declining populations due to the same habitat loss and poaching, it has become an enduring symbol of the need for wildlife conservation. Now with numbers around 1,900 in the wild and breeding programs worldwide to help assuage an already somewhat tricky procreation process, the giant panda was recently reclassified as vulnerable due to a slowly increasing population. Along the way it's become arguably the world's most recognizable animal - ironic, given its ambiguity within science.
In China, its largely serene countenance and 50/50 color scheme has been likened to the yinyang, the Chinese spiritual symbol denoting balance in opposites. And while the two panda species may seem similarly opposed—like the yin and yang themselves - each clearly has more than a little in common with the other.
Turning Red is streaming on Disney+.

Condenado
RARITY: ★★★★☆ | THREAT: ★★☆☆☆ SIZE: Guinea pig-sized.
HABITAT:
Often found in pet stores, shelters, and in peoples’ homes. In the dead of night they travel to seedy bars, casinos, and fighting pits to gamble. Wheekly Special is one sure place to find them.
OVERVIEW:
Sometimes, the spectral remains of irresponsible gamblers are condemned to live the rest of their existence inside the bodies of guinea pigs. And, sometimes, these corrupted guinea pigs – called condenado – are mistakenly purchased at pet stores. They look like normal guinea pigs, with different fur patterns and lengths, and overall behave similarly. By day, their diet is herbivorous, but at night… at night, they change. Their eyes will take on a deep red glow, and their teeth grow out yellow and sharp. Condenado develop a taste for fresh meat at night, and they will break out of their cages and run around to hunt in packs. Occasionally they’ll even be part of shapeshifter packs alongside much larger species.
Once a week, the condenado will meet up to play a game of poker instead of feeding. They will either bet away food stolen from their homes, money, or other eye catching possessions. The winner of these poker games gets to keep their winnings and is chosen as the pack leader until the next game. These games have also been known to result in many squabbles among the condenado, who are almost always trying to cheat.
ABILITIES:
The condenado have the power of minor mind control in which they use their whining, or “wheeks”, to hypnotize their owners. With this, they are able to ensure that their caretakers turn a blind eye to their late-night activities and thus results in them often being in denial of any obvious evidence that their pet is not normal.
They are also known to use their powers of hypnosis to entice their owner to rub them under the chin and give them extra hay to eat.
Typically harmless, but can prove deadly during the night when in a group. They have soft, squishy guinea pig bodies, but those teeth are sharp.
Condenado are also characterized by their human intelligence, as they are human souls trapped in the body of a guinea pig, but they are often too greedy to care about doing anything that is actually clever.
WEAKNESSES:
As gluttonous creatures, the condenado are cursed to constantly need to eat and will starve if they have not eaten for a two full days.
Any person that can see the dead or otherwise sense death will be aware that there is something “off” with the condenado. While they’re not quite ghosts, mediums will surely detect them.
Condenado can be killed like any other guinea pigs, though there is hardly any reason to do this.

Raccoons: The Clever and Curious Masked Bandits
Tumblr media
Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are one of nature’s most fascinating creatures. With their signature black “mask,” bushy tails, and dexterous paws, these nocturnal mammals have captured the curiosity of wildlife enthusiasts and pet lovers alike. Known for their intelligence and adaptability, raccoons thrive in a variety of environments, from deep forests to bustling cities. But can these mischievous animals also make good pets? Let’s explore the intriguing world of raccoons!
The Wild Life of Raccoons
Raccoons are native to North America and can be found in woodlands, marshes, and even urban areas. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals, with a diet that includes fruits, nuts, insects, small animals, and even human leftovers. Their ability to thrive in various habitats has made them a common sight in neighborhoods, rummaging through trash cans in search of food.
One of their most remarkable traits is their intelligence. Studies have shown that raccoons can solve complex puzzles, remember solutions for years, and even exhibit problem-solving skills on par with primates. Their highly sensitive front paws allow them to manipulate objects, making them skilled climbers, foragers, and escape artists.
Raccoons as Pets: Cute but Challenging
With their playful personalities and adorable looks, some people are tempted to keep raccoons as pets. However, while raccoons can form bonds with humans, they require specialized care, making them very different from traditional pets like cats or dogs.
Pros of Having a Pet Raccoon
✔ Intelligent and Playful — Raccoons are highly curious and love to explore, making them fun and engaging companions. ✔ Affectionate (Sometimes!) — A hand-raised raccoon can develop strong attachments to its owner, displaying social behaviors. ✔ Unique Personality — No two raccoons are alike! Each has its quirks, preferences, and habits.
Challenges of Owning a Raccoon
⚠ High Maintenance — Raccoons need plenty of stimulation and space to roam. A bored raccoon can become destructive. ⚠ Legal Issues — Many places have strict laws against owning raccoons as pets due to their wild nature. Always check local regulations. ⚠ Unpredictable Behavior — Even tame raccoons can become aggressive, especially during mating season. ⚠ Messy and Mischievous — Raccoons love to explore with their hands, meaning they will open drawers, knock over objects, and get into anything they can find.
If you’re considering a pet raccoon, be prepared for a lot of work! They require a proper diet, veterinary care, and a secure environment to prevent escapes. Most experts recommend that raccoons remain in the wild or in licensed wildlife sanctuaries.
Raccoons and Humans: A Love-Hate Relationship
While some admire raccoons for their intelligence and charm, others see them as pests. They often invade gardens, steal pet food, and nest in attics. However, raccoons are just trying to survive in a world where their natural habitats are shrinking. Humane solutions, such as securing trash cans and using deterrents, can help prevent conflicts with these clever creatures.
In some cultures, raccoons are even seen as symbols of resourcefulness and adaptability. Their ability to thrive in diverse environments is a testament to their resilience and intelligence.
Final Thoughts
Raccoons are truly fascinating animals, whether in the wild or as (very challenging) pets. Their intelligence, playful nature, and adaptability make them one of nature’s most intriguing mammals. However, they are not suited for everyone, and keeping one as a pet requires serious commitment and responsibility.
Instead of adopting a raccoon, consider supporting wildlife conservation efforts to help these masked bandits thrive in their natural environment. Observing them from a distance allows us to appreciate their beauty while ensuring they live wild and free!

Marmot Day
These playful critters with their bushy tails and chubby cheeks are nature's little comedians. Get ready for a giggle-filled encounter with these adorable mountain entertainers!
Marmot Day is a celebration of marmots, a group of large squirrel-like animals that includes groundhogs, woodchucks and ground squirrels. Even though marmots are found all over the world, from Canada to Mexico and from Russia to India, these animals don’t seem to get the attention they deserve.
This day was established to raise awareness and bring them the attention they so deserve!
History of Marmot Day
Marmot Day can trace its beginnings back to the 1990s when it was proposed as a bill in the Alaska State Senate. Because marmots are creatures that are particularly prolific in the state of Alaska, the idea was to draw attention to this animal as it represents some of Alaska’s folk values. Sponsored by state legislator Curtis Menard, the bill took some time to be passed, but was eventually signed into law by Governor Sarah Palin.
Since its passing by legislature, Marmot Day is an official holiday in the state of Alaska. Festivities tend to take many different forms, typically involving a family dinner or gathering of some sort where marmot jokes and anecdotes are shared!
A related day, but celebrated in the summer instead, is the annual event of Marmot Day that has taken place in Owosso, Michigan since 2002. In this case, the day acts as a community festival and invites participants to celebrate with many fun family activities and even a marmot video contest!
How to Celebrate Marmot Day
Show some love to these funny, furry little animals by celebrating Marmot Day in a variety of ways, with ideas like these:
Visit a Marmot Day Festival
Perhaps it would be fun to take Marmot Day as an inspiration to visit the northernmost of the United States – Alaska! Of course, February may not be the warmest of times to visit, but getting some first hand experience with the marmot might just be worth it.
Or, for those who are a bit more inclined to stay in the lower 48, make plans to head on over to the Marmot Day festival that takes place in Michigan on July 25. The day’s activities include a variety of fun-making events for the whole family, with a nod to this furry little creature in most everything they do!
Go Marmot Watching
Want to celebrate Marmot Day, but can’t make it to Alaska or Michigan? No problem. Those who live near marmot habitats, can make a special trip to go marmot watching, but be sure to plan it at the right time. Since around 80% of a marmot’s life is spent underground, they can be a little hard to spot – especially during the winter months.
It seems one of the best places in the US where marmots tend to be easiest to find are in Washington State, near Mt. Rainier National Park or Hurricane Ridge of Olympic National Park. Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park in California are also places to look for marmots, although here they tend to act as pests!
Learn More About Marmots
While those who live in areas inhabited by marmots might know all about them, folks from other parts of the country might just be learning about this unique creature. Spend some time in honor of Marmot Day getting more educated about these interesting little guys.
Check out and share some of these fun facts in honor of the day:
Marmots make high-pitched whistling sounds when they are feeling threatened. In fact, in Quebec, they are known as the “siffleux” which means “whistlers”.
Marmots are technically large ground squirrels with 15 different species living in Asia, Europe and North America.
Marmots are herbivores who prefer a diet of plants, grass, seeds and small shrubs.
Marmots tend to be active from March to September and then hibernate the rest of the year, which means approximately 60% of their life is spent hibernating!

Groundhog Day
Every year on February 2nd, an adorable groundhog emerges from its burrow to predict the weather. Will he see his shadow?
It’s that time again! That’s right, it’s time to gaze towards the state of Pennsylvania and watch a little groundhog scurry out of its den. Because he’s being released to let the masses know when to expect a break in winter weather and how soon they will see the spring breezes flow.
A groundhog? Predicting the weather? That’s right!
Oh come on now, stop laughing. It’s tradition. It’s fun and who doesn’t feel the need for a little fun this far into winter? Come on. It’s time to read a little bit and learn something interesting about this enduring custom. Who knows? By the end of this chat, it’s likely that many more people will be anxiously counting down the days until the next Groundhog Day!
History of Groundhog Day
After getting its official start in 1887 in the United States of America, Groundhog Day has grown in size and scope from its rather humble beginnings. Even before it was official, though, there is record of this day being observed in the US as early as 1840 as recorded in a private diary. 1866 was the first time it was recorded in a newspaper.
The custom started out as a superstition among the Pennsylvania Dutch people, a group of German speaking immigrants who settled in the state in the 1700s and 1800s after fleeing religious persecution in Europe. The stories about the rodent weather predictions may have begun with German ideas regarding a badger
After the United States made the day an official holiday, Clymer H. Freas was the editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit, a local newspaper in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. He began to herald the town’s groundhog as the official “Groundhog Day Meteorologist”. The branding certainly worked because when most people hear about this day now, who pops to mind? That’s right! It’s Punxsutawney Phil!
What many people don’t know is that there are countless other groundhogs who take this duty of predicting the weather just as seriously as Phil. People who live in the local area can probably share loads of stories about the little weather predicting rodents.
But how accurate are these furry weather people? Well, there is some debate over that but, for dear old Phil, the professionals say that he is correct about 39% of the time. Sadly, that means he isn’t correct even 50% of the time so the odds are probably more in favor of flipping a coin than with Phil. But still, it’s a fun tradition.
Now it’s time to think about ways to enjoy the celebrations surrounding Groundhog Day!
How to Celebrate Groundhog Day
Enjoying the observance of Groundhog Day can be loads of fun. It’s a great excuse to be creative toward the end of the winter months. Try out some of these ideas to get involved:
Know the FAQs about Groundhog Day
To celebrate the day, the first order of business is to get to know its finer points. Here are some FAQs to help in getting to know more about Groundhog Day:
What exactly does Phil do and why is it important?Phil, the groundhog, doesn’t really have a big job. He simply comes out of his den and the sun does the rest.
What does it mean if he sees his shadow? And why does this mean anything? Well if he sees his shadow or not predicts the breaking of winter and the start of spring. According to custom, if the groundhog casts a shadow meaning that it must be a sunny day) then everyone is in for another six weeks of winter weather.
What if Phil doesn’t see his shadow? If Phil comes out and it is cloudy and the sun casts no shadow, then spring-like weather should be on its way. So, perhaps for some people, the trick is to wish for poor weather on Groundhog Day!
View Punxsutawney Phil on Television
To truly celebrate, set the alarm and wake up early, gather the children, make a hearty breakfast and settle in to watch the groundhog emerge from his little nest. Today, most morning news shows will carry the process live and with much pomp and circumstance. The program usually begins around 6:30 in the morning in Pennsylvania, which is Eastern Standard Time (EST), but many TV programs will show recorded snippets of the event throughout the day.
Watch Groundhog Day
This unique 1993 movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell is a romantic fantasy comedy that has gained a bit of a cult following over the years. It’s the perfect way to enjoy celebrating this day.
Join the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club
The biggest fans of Groundhog Day might like to become a part of the official club. Formed in 1899, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has been encouraging groundhog enthusiasts for over a century. Just hop on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website for more information on how to join.
Adults can join the club for a small annual fee to get access to a quarterly e-newsletter, a membership card signed by Punxsutawney Phil himself, and advanced notice of the events scheduled to happen in Punxsutawney in celebration of the next Groundhog Day.
Kids can join the Jr. Groundhog Club to receive a newsletter, certificate and membership card. An even more special club is the Phil’s Birthday Club, available only to those whose birthdays fall on February 2!
Make Plans for the Next Six Weeks
Once you know the result of whether or not Phil saw his shadow, it’s time to joyously make plans. This might include more skiing and snowmen or getting ready to look for those early blooming daffodils and roosting robins!
How do you think it will turn out this year? Are you ready for the change of season? When Phil pokes his little nose out of his den and lets everyone know what to expect, join in with everyone else with a hearty cheer!
Happy Groundhog Day!
