Okay guys, I actually managed to have a civil discussion with someone on Arcane twt who disagreed with me! Everybody cheer😭😂🤭
But fr tho, I admit that I did quote twt that person in bad faith. A friend of mine made a joke about how Caitlyn wouldn’t have missed(iykyk) and this person’s response rubbed me the wrong way. Think something to the effect of “violence is never okay. Shame on you for joking about this.” So, I saw his response to my friend’s tweet and decided to ask him who he thought the “true villain” of Arcane was. I had a feeling what his answer would be.
He said Silco was the main antagonist (fair enough) but then, ofc, he started talking about how, ultimately, “both sides” were at fault for all that’s happening in the show. Now I know that one’s opinions on the media they consume aren’t necessarily a 1 to 1 with their real life politics, but for the sake of the argument, I’ll ask: what’s this obsession that we, as a collective, have with making things more complicated than they should be?
A lot of times, situations really are messy and complicated. But in this instance, I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think the situation between Piltover and Zaun is complicated at all. I see an oppressor (Piltover) being responsible for the centuries long disenfranchisement of the oppressed (Zaun). Then here comes Jinx, who has been victimized by Piltover for her entire life, becoming radicalized against them, and being violent towards them.
The idea that “violence is bad; full stop” is very dangerous. Violence against an entire group being conflated with violence on an individual level is not good. For example, let’s talk about stealing for a second. Is a poor, starving person stealing from a store that upcharges on necessities “wrong”? In my opinion, no. Is a corporation stealing wages(which is actually the most common form of theft) “wrong”? Absolutely! Now, if you wanna be technical, both examples are “in the wrong”. However, let’s be real here: one of these things is a hell of a whole lot more “wrong” than the other.
But to bring it back to Arcane, why is this idea that “the situation is so complicated, there are no good sides” so popular? There absolutely are! Violence against an oppressor is not a bad thing! I, a marginalized individual, am not anywhere close to being “just as bad” as the mfers responsible for my oppression!!! Why do so many of us feel that way? That doesn’t even make any sense! Stop feeling bad for people who don’t give nary a fuck, nor a shit, nor a good goddamn about you AT BEST! And at worst? They will GLEEFULLY partake in destroying your community!!!
I know the show is ultimately centrist asf(and therein lies the problem) but still!
Anyways, I say all that to say, it’s fine to disagree with people, cause I was able to have a nice discussion with this person, despite vehemently disagreeing with them. But like, I really wanna know WHY these people think the way they do. How could the situation between Piltover and Zaun be thought of as anything but chickens coming home to roost? If you’ve been paying even the slightest little bit of attention to the world we’re living in, and everything that’s going on rn, how could you not apply those same principles to the show?

A few important things:
"But I still feel like the entire Louis is a woman argument boils down to Louis is abused therefore he is a woman."
People are misunderstanding/confusing being a woman with being female-coded.
Coding (a la the Hays Code I've mentioned before X X) is a metaphorical parallel to subliminally reflect/represent certain experiences, dynamics, models & frameworks; in order to convey specific messages. A coded character doesn't have to BE that which they represent--the whole point is that they AREN'T that (queer-coding does this all the time, where cis/straight characters are meant to convey specific queer traits without inherently BEING queer). In this case, being gender-coded doesn't mean that a character IS that gender (obviously--we all have eyes); just that they represent/reflect particular aspects OF that gender's typically associated dynamics.
In IWTV, power imbalances/dynamics within nuclear family units (specifically) and larger communities (generally) are the main theme. Rolin Jones, Caroll Cutshall, and Mara LePere-Schloop all point out the uneven dynamics at play that point to what Louis represents, and where he sits on the hierarchical pyramid: at the bottom, below BOTH Lestat AND Armand.
"I don't think a self insert charachter has to be the same gender as the author and again I don't see him as a woman at all but going with what Anne said she also wanted Cher to play Lestat at some point"
NO. Anne wanted Cher to play LOUIS, read the quote again. Cuz even when Louis was a WHITE man he was still the metaphorical MOTHER/woman; and no one had a single problem seeing Brad Pitt's long-haired bishounen through a female-coded gaze. But suddenly he's a Black man and people wanna act brand new? SUS!
Abusive Mothers
"Yes Lestat's abuse has traits of toxic masculinity. That's the language in our society because most abuse is done by men. I don't think Lestat is a women (flamboyant gay man is right) but he's not a traditionally masculine man either. He expresses his emotions and is very comfortable with his sexuality. I think his relationship with Claudia is more similar to a mother daughter relationship than hers and Louis's. It's just an abusive and dysfunctional one."
I've already said my piece about Les's basis in dandyism & gender expression (X X), Claudia's abuse (X X X), and how Les raised Claudia. But again, just cuz Les is effeminate doesn't mean he's representing "more "of a mother--abusive/dysfunctional or otherwise. Again: Les is no Clytemnestra/Medea--the model "bad" wife/mother.
This tweet sums up everything better than I ever could:
Tumblr media
Again: Lestat doesn't even represent Gabrielle (the emotionally abusive/negligent mother/spouse). Yes, they're both abused by Marquis de Lioncourt & ran away. They still occupy opposite ends of the power spectrum--he's still her Maker, and he still resents her for not giving him everything he felt he was ENTITLED to (a nasty AF God Complex patriarchal attitude Les carries into TotBT vs. LOUIS).
I really like Kaelio's post, cuz it shows the cycles of generational trauma and how Lestat becomes a cold & withholding parent to Claudia; while still acknowledging all the ways he's actually emulating his tyrannical FATHER, and NOT his mother. Even in Gabrielle's distance, she SUPPORTED Les when he needed her most: giving him the gun so he could hunt & become Wolfkiller, cashing in her inheritance so he could go to Paris, fighting his father when Les was dragged back kicking& screaming from the church & the Lelio commedia troupe--and being beside him in QotD & the Chateau in the PL Trilogy.
When did Lestat support Claudia's independence? 🤔 When he insulted her being self-educated & called her life "destitute & inconsequential" & choked TF out of her when she said she wanted to travel? When he chased her down like a slavecatcher when she got on that train and said he'd "grind her bones to dust"? Sure, he made Santiago let her say her piece & curse the audience into oblivion--right before she was burned to ash/dust. 🙄😒
Even when Gab crossdresses & asserts her (trans)gendered independence, Les is an oppressive patriarchal a-hole to her--and yet his stupid arse wonders for 100+ years why she never calls or sees him. 🤦 Cuz he wanted her to be his eternal mother/companion/Blood Spouse/HOUSEwife--when the HOUSE becomes her gilded CAGE.
Tumblr media
Les was obsessed with living like a typical nuclear family & human HOUSEhold: Gab wanted to roam free in the jungles & wilderness; but Les kept furnishing houses with lavish furniture, making her go to the opera with him & blabbing about music! Sound familiar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"She could not give me what I wanted of her. There was nothing I could do to make her what she would not be."
Again:
Tumblr media
I don't disagree that Lestat represents motherhood via vampirism--it's long been established that vampires encompass BOTH sides of the mother/father paradigm:
Tumblr media
"Lestat being more dominant and powerful and higher on the patriarchy ladder as a white man does not mean Louis is not on it."
I've never said Lou wasn't. But I disagree when y'all say Louis doesn't represent motherhood; especially when the only reasons any of y'all ever give boil down to Louis as a pimp & that he's not effeminate & he doesn't crossdress; while deliberately ignoring the ways that Lestat represents not only toxic masculinity, but the toxic patriarchy as well.
"He's a pimp. He's able to inherit and run a business, and one that exploits women at that.
What on earth does that have to do with how LESTAT treated him? 🤨 How did Lou being a pimp affect Lestat's mommy/abandonment issues, that led Lou to being beat within an inch of his life & incarcerated in that crypt of a house by the man who claimed to love him? Louis wasn't a pimp in 1x5 or 2x7! This is the same misdirection SANTIAGO used to smear Lou in front of that braindead audience & justify why they'd KILL him. The same BS used to justify/excuse Eric Garner & George Floyd's deaths! Its RACISM.
Tumblr media
He expriences homophobia not sexism so he can still enjoy certain advantages if he masks it enough. He is in fact not a helpless housewife despite what Claudia claims."
I've never said he's the helpless housewife. I've always argued that Louis has POWER in his submission (a la the femme fatale), and that even being not AS powerful as Lestat, he still FIGHTS BACK (X X). But y'all keep assuming Victim = Helpless = Blameless, leaving zero room for a nuanced approach that can simultaneously see the ways that Lou IS an exploitative hypocritical a-hole, and is STILL a victim of white patriarchal gendered abuse.
"To call him a woman for being abused is assuming being abused and submissive are inherently feminine charachteristics which yikes. Or to call all gay men and men of color women because they don't get the full straight white man patriarchy package."
Stop acting like you're unfamiliar with the patented model of behavior and relationship dynamics at work. Lestans keep using that reductive argument/accusation, to act like I'm saying abuse = weak = woman. I'm saying the full package of interracial relationship Black gay man in 1910s-40s → systemically oppressed → socio-positionally vulnerable → "the unhappy housewife" → Ep5 abuse = female-coded. Louis PARALLELS the experiences of women vis a vis wives & mothers under abusive husbands. The lens through which Louis AS woman, not Louis IS woman, can be utilized to discuss the gendered power imbalance in Loustat's deliberately heteronormative family dynamic.
"Because show Louis is not particularly feminine at any point even in Paris or Dubai"
Now we get to the crux of the hypocrisy of it all. Gender's subjective, in the eye of the beholder. To you, Louis isn't feminine, cuz he doesn't look/act/dress according to the white rules that dictate what (white) femininity looks like to y'all. Lestat--A MAN sashaying penis-first into every effing room--can be Barbie, Mother, C*nt Queen all effing day, cuz his outward appearance & affectation fits the mold of the white woman flipping her long hair & twirling around in heels & flicking her wrists (again: see my posts on dandyism). Anything that veers from the heteronormative standard of (super)model behavior is automatically disqualified from the Uwu Olympics, and yet I'M the sexist misogynist cuz I say Lou's feminine/effeminate too.
Which has always been problematic with regard to....
wait for it....
RACE & MISOGYNOIR.
"And you can't have misogynoir against Louis because he is in fact a man in the text of the show and book despite however you want to personally interpret him."
Yes you can. (Meanwhile white!feminists will preach from the mountaintops that homophobia against (white) effeminate men is directly rooted in patriarchal/misogynist sexism against women, that stigmatizes any femininity within gay/straight men (X X X X X X X I literally just grabbed the first Google results cuz this is too easy)--but meanwhile Black gay men like Louis can't experience misogynoir--y'all are WILD! 🤦 But thank you for proving my point.)
I've seen plenty of Lestans who H A T E when Louis' called "Helen of Troy," cuz in their heads he doesn't represent what Helen does: the MYTH of the beautiful (white) woman & most desired creature of all time, whose face launched 1000 ships that sent the most formidable superpower burning down all cuz of tragic/doomed love.
They'll make all these posts reeling about how superpowered vamps like Lestat & Armand fall to their knees obsessed with keeping Louis around; teeheehee isn't it so funny, isn't it wild, they're down bad! down horrendous~! But then spasm like they're having a effing stroke the second you say Louis is Helen-coded.
Cuz in their heads, it's impossible to reconcile the idea(l) of the powerful white femme fatale or the treasured white feminine ideal with Black bodies, male or female; hypermasculinized even when they're VERY MUCH female/feminine/effeminate--which is why Black girls are aged up as Black women in the judicial system (X X) & hypersexualized white male gaze (which all informs the white female gaze); and why Black boys and men are stigmatized as raging sexual predators who're a threat to white (female) goodness/purity (which thus informs the white female gaze AGAINST seeing/accepting Black men as ever being on THEIR same level).
Tumblr media
And we see this exact same attitude during the Trial, as the script/LESTAT weaponizes it against Louis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Black) Motherhood & Femininity
"his relationship with Claudia does not resemble a mother/duaghter relationship to me."
Tumblr media
Again: LePere Schloop already confirmed how the show's BEEN subtly (& even overtly) signalling Louis' relationship with Claudia, and how he ultimately made peace with it: the shift in his existence from suicidal depression to Owning the Night, and owning up to his mistakes: thus, looking to the painting as the ideal representation of what he WANTED to be for Claudia: a mother sheltering her child.
Tumblr media
Not that he IS Claudia's literal mother, or that he wanted to BE Claudia's literal mother--he's still DADDY Lou, ofc! But that the representative relationship between mother & child is sacrosanct; Isis & Horus, Madonna & Christ--it's the behavioral MODEL IDEAL, it's the format, parallel, metaphor, CODE. Come hell or high water, this is the universal "mother" figure (read: parent/anyone) who'll move mountains & FIGHT to protect children or die trying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one's saying that fathers can't/won't stand up to protect children--I call Lou "Papa Bear" constantly (X X), cuz he IS Claudia's father. But people wanna act obtuse and pretend like "maternal instinct" isn't the universal CODE for idealized/proper parental behavior. Modern derogatory "tradwife" attacks against Lou are ridiculous AF, cuz they ignorantly ignore the reality of life in the effing 1910s-1940s when the tradwife WAS the Euro-American ideal! Louis is an upper middle class conservative southern gentleman born in 1877--wtf do y'all think the model for parents/spouses was in his generation!?
Tumblr media
His mother's effing Florence; he parallels/acts like her (X X)! 😅 He was born & raised & surrounded by tradwives--CLAUDIA'S the younger generation that breaks the mold! The Black men in Louis' life are USELESS--his dad's dead & tanked their whole estate, Paul's mentally unfit to take over, and effing Levi's a broke AF motherless sycophant Baptist. We see nothing about Lou's father--it's ALL deliberate, cuz it puts all the emphasis on the roles of MOTHERS, and the plethora of WOMEN who impacted/shaped Lou's life.
Ofc black!Louis won't look feminine to you if you're not familiar with Blackness. But even Jacob Anderson said he looked to FEMALE icons of Black empowerment (Eartha Kitt & Grace Jones) as inspirations for how he embodied Louis; his walk & talk & ethereal trans-human/gender aura.
Louis' been guilt-ridden cuz despite everything, he was powerless. He didn't/couldn't shelter/PROTECT/save Claudia. The dark ironic twist is that he was emasculated by Lestat, and emasculated by Armand & the coven. But just like vampirism didn't give him power over the racist white men, emasculation didn't give him the domestic ideal he tried to mimic in NOLA. He capitulated to Lestat's whims & conformed ("the unhappy housewife"), and it got him nowhere--dropped a million miles in the effing sky. He tried being independent & autonomous in Europe, and it got him nowhere--hamstrung & buried alive as the coven burned his daughter alive. He tried being the carefree vampire f***ing & killing at will in SanFran, and it got him nowhere--yeeting himself into the sunlight on a roof at sunrise, just like Paul. In Dubai, he conducts the interview trying to find the truth, and find himself--the lost pieces of himself; who he's most comfortable as:
The CARDIGAN Mystique
In Carol Cutshall's "visual hierarchy of power," Louis' cardigans & casual clothes are a deliberate contrast with the Power Suits he & Lestat wore in NOLA, and Armand wore in Paris.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lestans H A T E 1x5, and H A T E when people stress that Louis was abused, cuz that naturally forces one to realize that the abuser is their uwu blorbo c*nty pretty long-haired fave, Lestat & Armand--racism, colorism & texturism all rolled into one toxic sludge at Louis' expense. Louis' story (and thus, analysis) is rooted in abuse--all the SPINDLY ROOTS of how Louis' been abused, controlled, manipulated, gaslit, disrespected, oppressed & taken advantage of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it's ultimately, how he overcomes the oppressive societal/mental shackles: finally takes back agency & autonomy & control of his life and his narrative/story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lestat - S3 & TVL
"and as you said changed him to her self insert charachter and seemingly forgot he's supposed to be abusive in TVL. The Lestat the show is portraying is a mashup of the two which is why he's not just an abusive villain in Louis's story."
Yup, it's part of Lestat's entire character arc, and his gradual process of growth/development, trying to become a person/vampire/monster/hero going forward.
"But the show dynamic is confusing because there's terrible abuse but instead of being a show about a DV victim escaping his abusove spouse it still expects us to root for this romance and Lestat as a charachter because they're vampires and this is a gothic romance and so on."
Which I'm fully on board with! I LIKE Lestat, and I WANT Loustat to find a way to be happy together. Again: not every couple with IPV/DV divorces--many work to get to the root of their problems, addressing the toxic behavior on both sides so that they can move forward as a committed couple--just like I said before about Ray Rice & his wife.
Cancel culture makes every iota of problematic behavior a criminal offense punishable by effing death--as we see in The Trial. On one hand Lestans defend Lestat's BS with their whole chest cuz he's a vampire/monster they're not human don't judge them by human standards I love him cuz he's awful uwu queen slay yaas~!; but when it's Louis suddenly he's a pimp and he tried to kill Daniel and I hate him and it's his fault his life sucks, boo hiss~! That's what I have a problem with. Like I've BEEN saying: Louis' abuse (by Lestat AND Lestans) doesn't boil down to his gender/sexuality. It boils down to his RACE, plain & simple.
Tumblr media
Gotta wake up to this anon in the tags, undoubtedly referencing/shading what I reblogged here:
Tumblr media
Nonny, at least say it to my face if you wanna call me an internalized misogynist, just cuz I don't cosign the predominately white court of popular opinion's dogma that ONLY sees Lestat as the female-coded victim of Louis' "abuse" of the crossdressing campy Queen Mother de Lioncourt; while you reject any acknowledgement let alone honest discussion of Lestat as the patriarchal Coven Master terrorizing his fledglings/children--even in effing 2022 when he's setting Rat Catcher ablaze with the Fire Gift in Louis' honor & kicking him out in to the hurricane--another round in the stormy romance of you two.
And plot twist: I (mostly) agree with nonny about Anne Rice, and how she engages with (trans)gender through Louis--and I agree with Nalyra that there's also complexity to how AR engages with Lestat LATER--10+ years AFTER IWTV & her daughter Michelle's death.
Tumblr media
It's not at all easy to pin down, especially when in these convos about Loustat & gender, the most integral part of their dynamic is ALWAYS EXCLUDED by Lestans: CLAUDIA. She's only babytrapped cuz, as I've said 1000 times, Lestat was hyperaware of LOUIS' emotional/behavioral resemblance TO LESTAT'S MOTHER, GABRIELLE; and Louis' "maternal instinct," that resembled ANNE'S own excitement to be a mom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anne Rice is NOT saying Louis (or even Lestat!) represents her as a woman (in METAPHOR, not biology, DUH) cuz he crossdresses & gallivants around twirling his hair & flicking his limp wrists--I already discussed the effect of 18th century Franco-European dandyism on an 18th-century vampire stuck in the Rococo period (X X), where clothing is just ONE aspect of how masculinity & femininity are expressed--BY MEN.
Gender is MORE than Loustat crossdressing. Like I've said: it's misognyist to assume that everyone crossdressing is female-coded, while blatantly ignoring their BEHAVIOR--just like Nalyra said:
Tumblr media
I have screamed & hollered from the rooftops this whole time how the power dynamics between Loustat are being grossly misunderstood or outright overlooked, as everyone gets distracted by fun & c*nty Lestat. Somehow, ONLY Lestat gets to represent Mother, but LOUIS DOESN'T!? Sus! But I'M the misogynist homophobe for calling y'all RACISTS who can't acknowledge/accept a Black gay man in a suit (or cardigan) as a female-coded representation of motherhood, when the show's beat y'all over the head with it 1000 times? SUS!
Tumblr media
Esp. when I explicitly say Louis AS Woman, Louis AS Mother--nonny, grab a dictionary and realize that I didn't say Louis IS Mother, Louis IS Woman--it's SIMILE. It's METAPHOR. It's PARALLEL. It's CODING.
Tumblr media
It's highly problematic to reject AR's own words being "not solid" evidence (anon), or downplay it as outdated/irrelevant (Nalyra), just cuz it doesn't align with your own interpretations. That's not how proper analysis of primary sources works. It's CONTEXTUAL evidence about the processes of personal growth; just like it's contextual how AR couched her shift to Lestat in direct relation to her tryna move past her maternal depression/grief via Louis. You cannot discuss one without the other, but that's all I ever see far too many ppl do: downplaying the foundational conceptualization of these characters within the books, film, and show alike; and hiding behind accusations of homophobia & misogyny rather than honestly engaging with the characters and their behavior. You wanna talk about misogyny? How about MISOGYNOIR, and how y'all don't know EFF ALL about BLACK MOTHERHOOD, and the hypermasculinization of Black gay men, to even BEGIN to fathom everything Louis represents in contrast & relation to Massa Lestat.
Cuz there's CERTAINLY a marked lack of discussion or acknowledgement about how race factors into all of this. I see NO mention/discussion/analysis of Lestat by that anon rejecting the other side of the conversation I'm arguing against--esp. the white privilege Lestat enjoys that allows him to be far freer with explorations of gender & sexuality than black!Louis, and thus embraced by his predominately white cis female fans--who find it so effing impossible/offensive to see the ways that HIS BEHAVIOR directly contradicts the feminist ideals about agency & autonomy they allege to hold oh-so-sacred--"crushing what you cannot own."
Tumblr media
Which only further indicates that this particular propping up of Lestat in the fandom is being done at Louis'' expense in bad faith by bad actors running to everyone's accounts on anon and obfuscating the context they're even responding to.
Claudia never lied: "It's a STONING."

26 Reasons why Qrow is not Ruby’s father and why Taiyang is Ruby’s father
In response to the toxic aspect of the fandom attacking CRWBY and demanding that their desires for Qrow be chosen over canon, or how they feel their theory is more valid than the show itself? I have researched RWBY to make this 26-point Discussion as to why Canon is valid, and fancanon is not when it comes to Qrow Branwen, Ruby Rose, Taiyang Xiao Long, and Summer Rose.
 1.       “Monty said NO”    Most obviously. Monty Oum.
He said in this tweet that ruby and yang are half-sisters…half-sisters,  which means they share the same mom or dad…in this case Taiyang….
  https://twitter.com/montyoum/status/492070189731565568
Now people have claimed “he obviously meant step-sisters or cousins” Why is it that every time we show the English dictionary to you people or ask you to read it, that you claim you are being attacked or that you claim Monty was misleading us?
 2.       The writers said NO
Miles Luna debunked this theory on Reddit…
He pointed out that Ruby sees Qrow as a Role model, so she adapts her colors to be similar to his.
And you don’t need somebody to be blood to be your role model.
https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/7x3w4s/crwby_ama_w_miles_luna_kerry_shawcross_and_paula/du5d67g/?
 3. “Rooster Teeth said NO” Rooster Teeth even said that Qrow is "Ruby and Yang's Uncle" They also said “Ladies, he’s not your man”
https://twitter.com/RoosterTeeth/status/1067205612331782144
 4.  “But what if Summer had feelings for Qrow? Why does Qrow Serve Ozpin?” Qrow said in Volume 6 " No one wanted me... I was cursed... I gave my life to you because you gave me a place in this world... I thought I was finally doing some good... " So he was saying he wasn't wanted, so no relationship with Summer. SUMMER DID NOT WANT HIM. And he was literally saying he served Ozpin because Ozpin gave him purpose. It’s pretty sad how people think Qrow can only be a complex character if he obsesses over another person’s wife and child. What , you wanna make him Severus Snape, the Lilly Potter stalker who insulted a girl’s face and tried to poison a boy’s pet and publicly outed a teacher?
https://rwby.fandom.com/wiki/Qrow_Branwen/Quotes#So_That.27s_How_It_Is
5, "But Qrow could be lying" Except in volume 6 Qrow literally said "Don't lie...we're better than that"
And in volume 7?
" Long time ago. I just found working alone tends to be for the best "
" Gotta say, I’m still not really used to working with other Huntsmen in the field. "
And finally World Of Remnant on Patch.
" Nice place to raise a family, if you're into that sort of thing. "
https://rwby.fandom.com/wiki/Qrow_Branwen/Quotes#So_That.27s_How_It_Is
  6.  “Qrow fans claim that Ruby and Summer form a core part of Qrow’s character and backstory.” WRONG! The main accusation for demanding Rooster Teeth / CRWBY change the backstory for Qrow would accomplish nothing.
Raven already pushed Yang onto Taiyang to raise on his own.
Qrow forcing Tai to Raise Ruby alongside Yang while Qrow could regularly visit, and while Summer lived with Taiyang, Yang, and Ruby?
It would cheapen Qrow’s character….blood isn’t everything.  Neither are cliches.
 7. “But what if Qrow gave Ruby to Tai to raise after Summer’s death?” Volume Chapter 6, Burning the Candle.
Yang tells Blake that she (yang) and Ruby were raised together by Summer and Taiyang…not by Taiyang on his own, but by Summer and Taiyang.
Yang clearly had memories of being raised by Summer and Tai both,  which meant that Summer and Taiyang lived together raising Ruby and Yang for Several Years.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZkN-53h5Os
  8. “Does Taiyang care about Summer or Ruby?” Taiyang was noted to have shut down when Summer didn’t come back…. Yang noted this in Volume 2 Chapter 6, and Ruby mentioned in the first episode of Volume 3 that Taiyang missed Summer. Qrow also said that Ruby is Taiyang’s “Special Angel”…. Ruby has also pointed out numerous times that Taiyang is Overprotective of Ruby. In fact, Ruby's conversation with Penny about overprotective fathers.
 9. “Qrow knows Taiyang is Ruby’s Father. Taiyang knows Ruby is Taiyang’s daughter. Qrow has referred to Taiyang as Ruby’s father during volume 3 and 7. Taiyang referred to Ruby as his daughter in volume 3.
 10. “Why didn’t Taiyang train Ruby in Martial Arts?” Taiyang is a martial arts fighter.   Ruby has neither the build nor the personality for ruthless hand to hand combat like her sister… Taiyang would trust Qrow, despite his semblance.   Remember how bad Ruby was in v5?
 11. “Qrow’s semblance is not what his fans exaggerate it to be”
Speaking of Qrow’s semblance? He was playing video games with his nieces,   taught at Signal Academy,   and could train Ruby… Clearly,  his semblance is not what theorists make it out to be.
 12. “Why doesn’t Qrow treat Yang the same way he treats Ruby?”
Yang is the daughter of Qrow’s sister, who abandoned the team.
During a one on one interaction between Qrow and Yang after yang vs mercury, Qrow called his own niece crazy, after she had been framed.
Qrow was not empathetic to Yang.
Qrow may not like Yang’s resemblance to Raven.
Ruby is the daughter of his two closest friends, so of course he’d prefer Ruby over Yang.
 13.  “Examples of Taiyang caring for Ruby.”
Volume 2 Ruby was excited when Taiyang sent a package in the mail, not even knowing it was Zwei.
Taiyang was at Ruby’s bedside in V3, and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
He also tried to bring her breakfast in bed.
Taiyang said he wanted to chase after Ruby, but had to nurse Yang back to health.
During the V8 broadcast, Taiyang was upset when the broadcast was cut.
 14. “Genetics research”
Black hair is the subtype of the pigment for blonde hair…
Also, Ruby’s got the same hair strand that Yang and Taiyang have.
Finally, black hair is more dominant.
So Ruby doesn’t need blonde hair to be Taiyang’s kid.
https://askinglot.com/is-black-hair-a-dominant-or-recessive-gene
https://www.quora.com/If-a-jet-black-haired-parent-and-a-blonde-parent-have-children-what-color-hair-would-the-children-likely-have
 15. “The STRQ Photo”
The photo....Qrow was with STRQ for four years...do you really think Qrow is not allowed to cry on the photo unless he was romantically involved? Can't a man grieve over the death of a female friend that he was NOT in a relationship with? Or are men not allowed to have female friends? Ichigo and Rukia from Bleach for example...friendship. They were his friends, his family. People seem obsessed with the idea that Qrow cannot care about a woman unless he was romantically involved or unless he's their bastard father.
 16. “Men and Women…as friends, platonic” Harry Potter as a book showed that a boy and a girl can interact and still be friends…
Why can’t Qrow be Summer’s friend?
Why does he have to be her lover?
We’ve seen Qrow talk about Innkeeper’s skirt lengths and leer at Barmaids who flirted with him.
Also, he’s shown to be bonding with both Clover and Robyn.
People act like he doesn't flirt with anyone , and yet he does.
 17. “Bad Luck Charm” Qrow has spent his whole life with his semblance, named after a Crow.
Raised by the Branwen bandit tribe.
“You and I are not the same, you don’t want the burden of my name” Both Branwen and Qrow are names that Qrow hates due to his semblance and past…
People may think of him as cool, but Qrow suffers from self-loathing.
So NO, the Bad Luck Charm song does NOT in fact allude to Qrow being Ruby’s father, but that Qrow hates himself, hence a major part of why he’s alcoholic.
Proof of which is his volume 6 exchange with Ozpin about being useful, which Qrow disagrees with, leading him to drink further. Yang literally said that she had never seen qrow so drunk before in v6.
And Ruby encourages his self-worth leading him to try giving up alcohol….
His alcoholism is tied to low-self-esteem, not relationships.
 18. Manga Anthology
Taiyang was shown in the Manga Anthology to have shut down upon Summer’s Death. That impacted his relationship with Ruby and Yang. Qrow? Is relatively unaffected. The good Uncle helping around the house. Taiyang haters and Qrow stans took this to demand that Qrow is entitled to Ruby, despite Taiyang recovering and doing his best to be a father. Anything Qrow does is worshipped like Mother Teresa, while anything Taiyang does, good or bad, is downplayed and smashed. Taiyang loved Summer so much he was devastated by her death. Qrow was unaffected. Think about that.
 19. “I like Brats” Why does Qrow spend time with kids he’s not related to? Because he likes kids. You know how there are adults who enjoy being around brats? That’s Qrow. He didn’t have romantic feelings for Summer, he liked being around her because she was like a kid. Similar to how Blake likes Ruby’s idealism? And trusts her leadership?
 20.  “Taiyang the 2-timer accusation”
A woman on youtube claimed that Taiyang was a 2-timer who cheated on raven with summer, as there was, in her and her friends’ minds, “no way that taiyang could be with half his team” When asked about TaiQrow as a joke, she was angered that people even ship TaiQrow.
But let me ask you this. Are you the same person you are now that you were 10 years ago? People claim that Qrow was somehow cool in beacon…because he’s cool now. But Taiyang, who raises two kids, and holds a job and a house…cannot be ruby’s father…because he’s not cool? And that somehow he was never cool? I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had to be cool to be a parent. I also had no idea people were only allowed to be in one relationship per lifetime. Raven freaking abandoned Tai for the tribe. Summer chose Taiyang over Qrow. People literally make Qrow out to be either an OC in a shipping fanfic, or a Naruto fanfic where Naruto is written to be fawned over by a girl whose canonical spouse, boyfriend, or male friend is somehow rewritten as evil.
1 year…..in 1 year since Raven abandoned Taiyang and Yang, Summer Rose the friend of Taiyang’s who he had known for 4 years, became more than a friend.
So no….Taiyang is not a two-timerhe moved on from Raven.
 22. “Why can’t Taiyang talk about Summer?” To WHO? He’s barely got 15 minutes of screentime, and the writers did NOT do him any favors when they had Qrow demand he leave so Qrow could tell Ruby a secret Ozpin trusted him with, before telling Ruby to run away from home leaving only a freaking note. Terrible daughter. Even Yang was prepared to do the same! To a man whose first wife abandoned him! At least Weiss has a legit reason for acting as she does against Jacques, several at least. Ruby? No. Now why would Taiyang talk about Summer’s fighting style to Yang when trying to get her to stop acting like Raven in her fighting style and semblance? Sure if there was more time…but RT at the end of the day isn’t some money-hungry political entity, it’s a startup at the end of the day, they don’t have the ability to do a full anime episode. Also, Taiyang cannot go out on these active missions…he was a schoolteacher who did not do missions until only recently…he was retired, remember.
 23. “These fanworks make more sense to me”
Qrow fans have tried using fanworks to justify their theory or ship, the same way Blacksun fans or Adam apologists make similar claims, and even Raven fans try to claim Raven is somehow a good mother. What do these fanworks do? Hate on Taiyang. Dismiss Ruby and Yang being half-blood siblings. Ignore multiple elements of the show or scenes. Occasionally shit-talk the writers.
Every time somebody tries to make a “rwby rewrite” or “rwby alt” or “Qrow is ruby’s father au” they cannot do it without completely rewriting the characters in so many forms and even the show, till Qrow, Raven, Taiyang, and Summer are NOTHING like they are in the show…And ONLY how a shipper wants qrow to be.
Or rewriting qrow to be nothing like he is in the show.
Most Alt or Rewrite consists of making Taiyang abusive, a cheater, or refusing to allow him to interact with Summer, while regularly pushing qrowxsummer at each other.
So no…it’s not that it makes sense to them through some fanart….a headcanon that has been debunked is no longer headcanon. A theory that is shut down is no longer a theory. There’s a reason anti-vaxxers and flat-earthers still exist. Because to them, their theories make more sense than reality. Which is why people still believe Qrow is Ruby’s father the same way people believe vaccines cause autism. Neither are true, and no amount of facts will shut them down, but they’re both popular theories.
 24. “Qrow Rings and Cross”
People claim that Qrow was married to Summer or that his cross represents him mourning Summer. Did the STRQ photo, in v3, the same volume as his appearance, not show Qrow with his rings, his cross, and angrily scowling, while Summer was right next to Taiyang?
 25. “What about Summer Rose’s choice?”
Remember how I said making Qrow’s character based on solely Ruby and Summer, ignoring everything regarding the tribe and ozpin giving him hope, and the grimm reaper…was bad writing? There’s a reason people hated v5. Raven was proven to be the deadbeat, Qrow was shown to have friends, and that Taiyang knew about Salem, and of course it was confirmed that Yang and Ruby again were sisters by Raven.
Now how about Summer? Team leader….took a man and a daughter who were abandoned by her friend…and made them her own. Yang calls Summer Rose “Supermom” and “Her Hero”…was literally willing to storm a bandit camp so Raven could use her portal to take Yang to Qrow, so she could get to Ruby. And yeah, I know the RWBY critics scream “why didn’t Yang just look for Ruby in Mistral?” It’s a bloody kingdom, and Yang was pursuing a lead, that Tai had given her, and Qrow told Yang he’d look after her sister. Remember that? Oh wait, RWBY Critics forget, my bad. Anyway, she’s more of a sister to Qrow than his blood sister Raven, she’s more of a mother to Yang than Raven, and she’s more of a spouse to Tai than Raven. Good Stepmother. Non-married couple. Relationship built on trust. Blood is not the same as family. (Example Weiss’s remark to her father) (Or Dom Toretto)
So making Summer into a throw-away character who dies so that a brooding jerk of an alcoholic can claim character development? Making a woman nothing except a throw-away for a man to get development is BAD WRITING. For God’s Sakes, even Pyrrha was written better than that! She interacted with team rwby, nora was always helping her out, and so was Ren (though those shakes are a crime against humanity” But when Qrow fans try to demand he’s ruby’s father? Their fanworks make Summer as much of a flat character as Preston Harvey from Fallout 4, where they make Summer unable to do anything but be obsessed with Qrow and having his child, similar to how Preston cannot think of anything other than “Another settlement needs your help, I’ll mark it on your pip-boy”
 26. Finally, the accusations that CRWBY are lying.
“You have to be ****** if you believe CRWBY when they say Qrow isn’t Ruby’s father” “CRWBY is lying, it’s what writers do” “It’s okay for writers to lie, it’s good for plot” “I’d prefer it if CRWBY was lying to us” “Monty is dead, the writers should change it now” “Monty is dead, nothing else in the writing matters” “Monty was hiding the truth from us” “CRWBY is hiding the truth about Qrow being Ruby’s father” “It makes sense for CRWBY to lie to us” Look at this…Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, instagram…. The first quote? Was a woman who was using an anti-autism anti-disability slur defending the theory. Never have I ever seen people so obsessed with a  theory that they would deny reality and be rude to the very writers and original creator. But the QrowxSummer and Qrow is Ruby’s Father fandom group has made countless cases of this. THIS is how they defend their theory? And people upvote, like and support these remarks? SHAME SHAME SHAME
 Conclusion:
I get how people desire qrow to be Ruby’s father for ships or fanfics.
Even to where they make Taiyang a hated character just for the sake of making sure nobody disagrees with them.
But the attacking of RWBY and CRWBY, claiming that “this needs to be fixed”, or getting angry at RT for not giving you the non-canon ship you want? Claiming that just because you want it to be so, that somehow your ship/theory has “validity?”
That reflects poorly on the fandom and critics.
But then again…. It’s easy to ignore what’s real and what’s a fact that when theorists and ship-pushers and CRWBY Haters on youtube tells you to stop listening to monty and the writers, and instead believe whatever you want and claim whatever you want, Because surely you know what’s better for the show than the people who worked on it, right? Ha ha ha, no. THAT is the ULTIMATE disrespect somebody calling themselves a fan could ever give. And if you think or agree with that type of logic, you should look in the mirror.
I looked for backup sources to defend CRWBY and RWBY, you’ll find them below.

What makes me piss off is the USA fans acting like "this has never happened before we need a statement from her"
Well gest what? you got what you want, but theres a place in the world where fans never get the refound of lover fest and didn't even have the support from her team ... but it was with latam fans so it doesn't count to you
And gets even worse because when we talked about our situation and we were flooding taylornation tweets for some help, only a fews fans from USA support us
Most of you was denounce our tweets as spam because "taylornation cant change the politics" and with the spam taylornation wasnt able to finding yours tweets about your pets baking cookies while listening lover
Now you say that "taylor can change the politics of ticketmaster"
But you only said this because you find out that reciving a quote from taylornation doesnt make the tickets arise into your home
International fans has talked since forever that taylor need to change her team ... but only now you guys are caring about this
And you wanna know what scares me more? that taylor stops the conversations about the internationals shows that was supposed to happen in 2024, to add more dates to US tour and leave internationals shows to 2025 or whoever knows when the US tour will ends
I'm really sad about a lot of things that you guys said and do to her in the last few days, and she already came here to say that she will find a way to resolves this while we didnt recive an "i am sorry about the situation but i tried and i cant do anything more"
i've saw fans saying in that time of the lover fest situation that she doesnt need to go to a country that dont speak English because the people wont understand her
And well seems like the taylornation team wont change so once again the USA fans gets everything and the others country gets the rest (if remain something for the others countrys because sometimes doesnt exist the rest)
Just add that the lover fest situation was more simple to her team, because if others artists (that was supoust to came here at the same time that her with others company) changed politcs and gets the refund to brazilian fans ... why her team couldnt do the same to us?
We dont even know if she or her team tried to do something for us, its different that she change the ticketmaster situation 'alone' (and seems she will try to do something for you)
The situation for USA was caos some people wont able to buy the tickets or buy it for a lot of money and was a stracefull situation .. but you get a statement from her that she will try doing something we really basacly lost our money in a pandemic and ever her team never said a shit about it
"I'm extremely protective of my fans... by doing it myself with my team who cares as much about my fans as I do" makes me think that they only cares about USA swifties
Because where was some statament about the latam? We only wanted to feel shelter even they cant do anything
You can live in your bubble all you want and whine over little things knowing that she will always come to your rescue and you can discord all you want but it is clear that the difference in treatment between the fans is yealling. So what you claim to soffer, we soffer 13 more
We past to all of this stuff and some others ... and we still here to support her, even when she wasnt here to conffort us, we stayed here
And you didnt see a latam swiftie burning cd/merch (well 99% cant buy them but ... this isnt the point) or saying REALLY bad things about her as you were saying... while you guys are complaning about this stracefull situation and never give her the bennefict of the doubt
The situation between taylor/tn and international fans is sad but i feel that i'm already came into a aceppet process that if she came or give some warm to us ok, if she doesnt do ok too i will stay here anyway but the USA fans actions over the course of this week makes me angry
I know that the USA is her main market and will always be, there is no way to compete or compare with them
But latam is a market that has been growing on its own, without the help of her team and has the stature to go head-to-head with some others markets that she/her team has always paid attention to
The lover fest show in brazil was only 2 dates, but it was 2 dates for ALL latam and a lot of fans from another country were affect by a 'law' that werent from their country as we go through a pandemic ... and a 'law' that taylornation could do something about it
Like i get it that probably t4f (our ticketmaster) said to taylornation that all the things about the refund was happened according the law (because this what they said to us)
And its totally aceptible that taylornation believed in them in the first moment, because they dont know about the laws in Brazil
But since the moment that we came into internet to say "we saw some artist get the refund for their fans even with the laws, please try to do something" and taylornation choose to be online and quote some random tweet about a fan baking cookie
Well i think thats is where the problem lives
I you dont understand this yet .. the law said that the refund wasnt obligatory BUT IF THE COMPANY CHOOSE TO DO THEY COULD DO
So a lot of team from others artist came and talked about it with others companys and get into a agreement and fans get the refund
Why taylornation choose not to do it with us? Because if they tried and couldnt do anything ... they could said it and we will understanded
What we dont understand its where were those 'my team always protect my fans' that taylor talked in this letter about the usa shows ... where this protection went when we needed them?
It's great that she said something about the USA situation and I hope she actually does something about the shows because it's her main market and the whole situation was stressful for everyone, there was a LOT of things wrong that still need to be explained
I hope that taylornation are working and that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible, in the best way for the fans, not for ticketmaster, not for taylor ... for the fans
But i hope that international dates, that probably are on the way to be scheduled, dont be affected
And more than that, if taylor came to talk about international dates before she add more shows into the usa (i think she will do that) ... i hope the fans from usa dont lose their minds and start talk shit about her again
Because i think she can do US - INTERNATIONAL - US ... end the tour where she start because of the demand (even its take some time to her get back to usa)
Anyway ... there's more i want to say but i'll stop here
PS: I'm not fluent in English so there are probably a lot of writing errors, but I hope that the interpretation and intention/context was understandable

01. techo kaigi 2022
Tumblr media
wanna try out actually blogging on my blog!! chatty post under the cut. it’s about journals for next year and how i use them!
for a while now, i keep on joking that i’ll drop everything and become a stationery youtuber. in reality i’m too shy, self-conscious of my voice, and my desk setup is too messy for my liking to take a video of LOL... but i’m still fairly interested in the journaling community and people’s thoughts about planners. i’m a big lurker, but i really enjoy talking about things i like! so i kinda want to try using tumblr to talk about my interests! twitter is a pretty social platform, but there’s only so many tweets i can thread before feeling like “now i’m really talking too much” and then i stop LOL
anyways, i thought that a good first stationery blog post would be about my planner lineup for 2022!
Tumblr media
🐤 hobonichi a6 - crane cover (from sakurahandcraft on etsy)
my main journal for memory keeping and scrapbooking! i’ve been using a hobonichi since 2019 and i think it’s been really helpful for me. i didn’t vibe with the a6 hobonichi covers this year so i went with a cover from an indie shop! people are super creative with designs. i really liked this cover because i felt like it’d look nice with the hobonichi weeks cover (also..... mail bird...... oc content.....)! i’ve been matching my a6 and weeks covers for the past few years so i feel like i can’t get out of it haha.
Tumblr media
the way i use hobonichi is pretty straightforward - i try to incorporate a little bit of journaling every day, so the one page a day works really well for me. i’m comfortable with the smaller a6 size, the empty space isn’t as intimidating to me. prior to hobonichi, i tried bullet journaling, but i realize... i HATED having to write the date every day LMAOOO so i feel more ready to just jump right into journaling.
Tumblr media
some other things i use the a6 for: habit tracking! i track things like going to bed early, drinking a certain amount of water, etc. i like using rainbow highlighters because it’s satisfying to see a full row filled up!!
Tumblr media
(plant stickers by @/itskleine, washi by me)
admittingly i slacked off on doing these monthly doodles because i wasn’t feeling well (i think... this is the only month i had completely filled out 😔✊), but i rly enjoy seeing these filled! i want to try and do better next year on these because it’s cool seeing a month in review.
sometimes i miss pages, or i don’t really know what to write on some days, and that’s ok! when i’m at a loss, i tend to write out quotes, stuff that resonates with me, or horoscopes lol. (the above acnh image is actually a shop promo image, so i use my empty pages accordingly LOL)
Tumblr media
🌱 hobonichi weeks - dandelion pappus
(stamp washi by @/blueludebar, boat washi by @/anguiculus on twt)
i’ve been enjoying hobo weeks the past few years, but not sure if i’ll use it moving forward since i started a new job! regardless i still got one because i like using it for both work/art-related things and other miniscule tasks.
Tumblr media
(egg sticker by @/kaiami, washi by me)
as you can see i keep the exact same layout every week LOL, which i think is fine! it works for me! i put general goals for the week on the blank page so that i can remember what i want to get done over the course of the week. i also like separating the columns and pages for personal stuff and for art stuff.
for monthly pages in the weeks, i put in events or outings. i used to indicate my spending but now i use notion for that!
Tumblr media
 🍋 leuchtturm1917 a5
(stickers by @/missdurianne, @/kinwamonster, @/karakanani on ig, @/superaenbow on twt)
this is something new i’m trying out! admittingly blank right now but i’m hoping to put art i’ve made in there and also log achievements/nice things that people say to me bc... my brain fogs and i don’t remember good stuff as much as i do the bad 😔😔 i’m hoping that it’ll be a positive notebook when i have a bad day!
🐶 midori pocket diary b6 - dog
i’ve been using the midori diaries to track my health (both physical and mental). it’s really helpful for me because my memory has been very bad (esp with pandemic etc etc), and it’s very useful for whenever i have doctors appointments. the inside pages are already decorated, so i don’t have to focus too much on it looking nice, which i really like.
🐱 chococat blank notebook
admittingly i don’t know the specs of this notebook because..... it’s from 2005 LMAOOO?? this is my “morning pages” / stream-of-consciousness notebook. it’s a habit i’ve been doing for a few years! yumi sakugawa made a good post explaining morning pages here. whenever i write, i try and pick a notebook that isn’t too expensive or an old notebook i never used. it doesn’t super matter because it’s just a space for me to write unfiltered thoughts, so it really doesn’t have to be pretty haha. i don’t really want it to be because it’s a vent notebook!!! tbh i don’t really look back on this notebook, but it’s very helpful for me to have a space where i can let out thoughts without being judged - i like doing this in the morning so i can start the day with a clear head!
...and that’s it!! (i say, as i write a long post HAHA) if anyone is also journaling or buying planners for next year, i always love to hear what other setups are out there! i always get a little melancholy and existential at the end of the year, but planners and stationery helps cheer me up so that i can look forward to the new year, a clean slate.

What’s with the scarf: yet another snowbaz meta
aka the long-awaited and much-anticipated knight/dragon dichotomy meta.
Wanna know that the fuck was up with that scene where simon caught baz’s scarf? Welcome, you’ve found your new home. Let’s go.
Guess who’s back. Back again.
It’s me, bitch. Now here with their 5th goddamn essay on these goddamn books. Somebody stop me I’m a fiend.
For this one i really do suggest you read my simon is a dragon meta, but if you don’t have time just look at this tweet.
Now that we have that out of the way. Let’s get started.
Point One: The Knight
I know what you’re saying, “what? I thought this was about the goddamn scarf? What’s this shit about knights stop.” I tricked you, fucker. The scarf isn’t until the end. (You save the best for last.)
Simon Snow is the knight in shining armor of the world of mages. He’s given a sword and pointed in a direction and off he marches. He’s the secret weapon. He’s the bomb. He’s the one that came to save us. He’s the one that came to end us all. The poetry of Carry On is that he was the dragon he was meant to slay, and he gave up his “knighthood” (powers) to defeat himself.
It’s true that Simon gave up his powers, but did he give up his knighthood? In title and in practice, yes, but he still acts the part. Let’s investigate the defining feature of knights: The Code of Chivalry.
To quote this website that words it perfectly:
“ A Code of Chivalry was documented in an epic poem called 'The Song of Roland'. [...]   Roland was a loyal defender of his liege Lord Charlemagne and his code of conduct became understood as a code of chivalry.”
From The Song of Roland came a listing of chivalrous traits that all knights should strive to have. They are as follows:
To fear God and maintain His Church
To serve the liege lord in valour and faith
To protect the weak and defenceless
To give succour to widows and orphans
To refrain from the wanton giving of offence
To live by honour and for glory
To despise pecuniary reward
To fight for the welfare of all
To obey those placed in authority
To guard the honour of fellow knights
To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit
To keep faith
At all times to speak the truth
To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun
To respect the honour of women
Never to refuse a challenge from an equal
Never to turn the back upon a foe
This is Simon to such a T that it’s a little bit alarming. Wayward Son is Simon’s struggle to reintroduce himself into civilian life after being a “boy soldier” since he was eleven. He’s a knight whose sword has been taken, armor melted down, and purpose rescinded.
A knight can’t be a knight when the king’s been killed. Who, then, does he serve? Who, then, does he protect?
Simon has lost his purpose, his meaning. He has these traits that he doesn’t know how to funnel into something else. He’s a chess piece that’s utterly worthless.
Not only does he feel purposeless, but he also hates an entire side of himself. and that leads us to our next point:
Point Two: The Dragon
Simon Snow was the villain of his own story.
He was his own dragon to his own knight. His own worst enemy. The main conflict of this story is a man vs. himself type. Simon hates an entire part of himself. He doesn’t just hate it, he vehemently denies its existence.
“I’m not a DRAGON!” (Wayward Son, Chapter 35)
Of course, if you’ve read my wings meta you’ll know that not only is this him denying part of himself, but also his sexuality. And his love for Baz. But Rainbow writes layers upon layers into this delicious parfait, and Simon’s dragon-ness isn’t limited to being his sexuality. This is literature, after all.
The knight needs to accept the dragon. Simon needs to accept the person that his trauma has turned him into. If you’ve been through any major trauma, you’ll know that you’re different afterwards. You’re still you. All of the most important parts are there- you did make it out alive- but you’re a little bit different.
You’re more careful. You’re more anxious. You guard your heart just a little more fiercely. You don’t want to let people in quite so easily anymore.
What is a dragon’s purpose in a narrative? To protect. To guard. To keep out. To keep in.
The dragon is those behaviors that we learned to protect ourselves in those times of hurt, and while, yes, we need to unlearn some of those behaviors, certain ones may never leave. Once you figure out how to read micro-expressions on an abuser, you can’t just unlearn how to read a face like a book. The issue is figuring out how to manage those habits. How to keep them from hurting others that aren’t going to hurt us. How to... train... our dragons... (I’m sorry it’s my favorite movie.)
So, the dragon is simon’s shadow self and the knight is his light self, yes? Yes. But! Let’s put a magnifying glass up to these two concepts.
If a dragon’s narrative purpose is to guard, protect, keep out/in, and be defeated, then what’s a knight’s narrative purpose? A knight’s purpose is to guard, protect, save, and defeat.
These two concepts aren’t wildly different, they’re two sides of the same coin. Simon needs to stop seeing these two sides of him as enemies and instead recognize that they’re good and bad in equal measures. The dragon questions potential dangers; the knight helps all out of the goodness of his heart. The knight obeys blindly; the dragon knows to obey himself first. The knight is selfless in all things; the dragon is selfish and greedy. There are pros and cons to both archetypes.
But fire and steel? The monster and the hero? How do you reconcile these two concepts? How do they fit into one person?
Well, the answer surprised me too.
Point Three: Tarot?
I know, I know. Stick with me. I’ll explain.
In every tarot deck there are the major arcana (unimportant for this meta) and, just like in a regular playing card deck, four suits. Each suit has a king, queen, knight, and page (also like a regular card deck). Each suit relates to an element: pentacles = earth, swords = air, wands = fire, and cups = water.
We’re going to be looking at the knight of wands.
He is a knight of fire and passion and spark. He is headstrong, impulsive, and reckless. This card is Simon in his entirety. To drive home my point, let me quote from the guidebook to The Enchanted Tarot by Amy Zerner & Monte Farber:
“The dark [Knight] of Wands rides into view upon his great, plumed charger, carrying a fire-tipped wand. Behind him the gray, dusky clouds swirl like smoke, against which his figure glows like red embers. His journey is carrying him into the unknown but he is a pioneer and filled with energy and excitement. He likes to take risks. An active, unpredictable and competitive disposition drives him forward. He radiates a very masculine energy, full of creativity and passion. His youth, however, sometimes impels him to be quarrelsome or overbearing if he feels his authority and leadership are in question. Somewhat self-centered, he is likely to think he knows a good deal more than he does...”
The knight of wands embodies both that regal nature of a knight and fiery passion of a dragon. Simon needs to stop thinking that these two sides of him are incompatible or that one is lesser. Simon is Simon and he is worthy to be called a knight, even with all of his dragon parts.
Point Four: Courtly Love
or maybe not so courtly?
Courtly love was a concept in the knight’s code of chivalry where a knight would pick a fair maiden from a higher status and dedicate all of his great deeds to her honor. Because the catholic church had a tight grip on everyone’s balls, though, this love was not sexualized. Well... it wasn’t supposed to be but we all know how that shit works.
Agatha was supposed to be the “endgame.” She was Simon’s courtly love. His fair maiden to which he dedicated all of his noble deeds.
But Agatha didn’t want to be a fair maiden anymore.
And Simon didn’t love her.
And then there was Baz’s hankie.
In most Courtly Love relationships, there was a token bestowed upon the knight by the lady as a symbol of gratitude and affection. This token was, most often, a kerchief.
I think we alllll remember that goddamn handkerchief. I remember that handkerchief. That handkerchief haunts my dreams.
Simon keeps that goddamn handkerchief in his drawer after he takes it from Agatha. He doesn’t even give it back. He so desperately wants to have this token of Baz’s love. His approval. His friendship. He wants something of Baz’s because he feels like he can’t have Baz himself. Baz is his real unreachable maiden. Baz is the one Simon doesn’t feel like he’s good enough for.
But more importantly, this brings us to the most important point of this meta:
Point Five: The Scarf
“The Mustang sounds like a bat on its way out of hell. And Simon is its getaway driver. Fourth gear on a gravel road, his blue eyes narrowed to slits. My mother’s scarf catches the wind and slips off my head. Snow whips out his hand to rescue it. He glances over at me, for just a second, holding it like a banner.”  (Wayward Son, Chapter 25)
I know I literally screamed the first time i read that. Simon is a knight saving his lady’s favor.
But it’s not just that the scarf is a favor. Simon always gives it back. You don’t return a lady’s favor.
“‘Oh, hey,’ he says like he’s just remembered something. He leans back to reach in his pocket, and takes out a wad of blue silk.
‘That’s my mother’s scarf!’ I reach for it.
He opens his hand. The scarf threads through his fingers as I pull it away. ‘Sorry,’ he says. ‘I forgot it was in my pocket.’
‘I thought I left it in the hotel room.’
‘You did.’
I fold the scarf, gently. Snow watches for a moment, then looks away.”
(Wayward Son, Prologue)
Now, @theflyingpeach (hi bri) pointed out to me that the scarf probably represents Baz’s humanity, what with it being his mother’s and him leaving it at the hotel. And yeah she’s right you can read it as that. (and it’s quite compelling) But that’s another meta for another day.
Today we’re on that good knight shit.
That scarf is Simon’s heart.
Baz says he always travels with it. He gently uses it to protect himself against the wind. Simon thinks he’s gorgeous when he wears it. Baz keeps thinking he’s lost it...
but he hasn’t.
He’ll never lose it, as long as Simon’s around.
Go back up and read those excerpts and tell me you don’t want to burst into tears.
Simon keeps returning his heart to Baz. “I’m broken. I’m bruised,” Simon whispers. “I’m a knight with no sword. I’m a dragon with no hoard. I only have this one last thing to protect, but instead I give it to you. I’d give it to you again, and again, and again. It’s yours forever. Even though I think you don’t want it, it’s yours until you explicitly tell me to take it back. My love is yours for however long you want it, Baz.”
The handkerchief in Carry On also translates into being Simon’s heart.
“I go to the drawer where the handkerchief is shoved in with my wand and a few other things, then I wave it in his face. ‘This one.’
Baz pulls the fabric out of my hand, and I pull it back because I don’t want him to have it. I don’t want him to have anything right now.” (Carry On, Chapter 50)
Simon wasn’t ready to give Baz his heart yet in Carry On, but it was still Baz’s. It still had his family crest embroidered right into the material. Simon’s heart has always been Baz’s and Baz’s alone. It’s just that now, he freely gives it. He freely returns it.
“I’m yours, Baz. I’m yours.”
A knight could not go against his code and cross that barrier to be with his lady.
But a dragon is selfish. A dragon can ask for what it wants.
And all Simon wants is Baz.
And Baz is just waiting for him to ask.
Thank you for reading yet again! I dedicate this to bri because without her the scarf thing would’ve never dawned on me. Also she kept bitching at me to write this.

The Masked Singer Season 5 Episode 2 Recap: It’s Group B Time, let’s meet them! (Commentary & Guesses)
Hello my fellow Masked Singer fanatics! Welcome (or welcome back) to Ana’s Masked Singer recap, where I, Ana (nice to virtually meet you btw), recap every single episode of The Masked Singer. Here we are again with season 5, but this time another group, Group B, which consist of Black Swan 🖤🦢, Piglet 🐷, Chameleon 🦎, Grandpa Monster 👹 👴, and Phoenix 🦜.
So, let’s begin with the first eliminated contestant of Group B:
The first eliminated contestant was:
*DRUMROLL PLEASE*
Phoenix 🦜
Tumblr media
Commentary: Ok, so this wasn’t surprising whatsoever, she sang Tik Tok by Kesha and you can obviously tell that she isn’t a singer at all. Like idk how else to explain it to you guys, but I guess she was talk singing... kind of like Wendy/the lips last season... so it was kind of easy the moment she opened her mouth to start singing to recognize immediately who it was...
Having said that, she was revealed to be (as I knew, this one wasn’t hard)...
*DRUMROLL PLEASE*
Caitlyn Jenner
Tumblr media
Hehe I knew it! Again, like Wendy Williams aka the lips, this was way too obvious. She already walked around Hollywood Blvd with the Don’t Talk to me hoodie on so I knew she was going to be on the show but the min I saw Phoenix, the clues, and the moment she opened her mouth, I was so certain it was Caitlyn. No, I am not a big Kardashian/Jenner fan tbh but I used to watch the show way back when.... like in 2016? I am not sure, but I recognized her voice immediately.
Now onto my guesses for the remaining 4:
1. Black Swan 🦢🖤
Tumblr media
Commentary: So she sang Barracuda by Heart and damn, she got a strong voice! It’s a really amazing voice, even though the song choice wasn’t my favorite, because it didn’t suit her voice completely and showcase her range, but she was badass (can I say that? Whatever, this is my show, I’ll say it, it’s not THAT bad of a word) tbh. In certain parts, she was like screaming a lot and I was like um maybe this isn’t her best song choice but her voice is amazing! She gives me Seahorse mixed with Flamingo vibes, I love her!
I think she is singer extraordinaire:
Jojo (not Siwa but we have another Jojo on our hands)
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: there are so many clues that match but her voice is the main thing that clicked for me that it was her, but let’s look at those clues so you can get the picture:
Wanted Poster with RV highlighted= she appeared in the movie RV with Robin Williams
She talks about being trapped and someone else’s prey and then getting out of it= she was trapped in her record label & there was controversy surrounding it and she had to sue her label for not releasing her music
A 5 on a watch= she toured with 5th harmony and has released 5 albums
Cluedledoo (Rooster) clue= she covered a monster= she covered one of T-Pain aka the Monster from season 1’s songs
2. Piglet 🐷
Tumblr media
Commentary: He was my favorite of the night with his rendition of Speechless by Dan + Shay! You guys know if you have seen my recaps in season 3 (or even last week with Robopine) that I have a soft spot for a guy who has a super silky voice, like either boy band type or R&B smooth af kinda vibe (i.e. Fox in season 2, Turtle in season 3, Robopine in season 5).... or should I say any guy who can falsetto and Piglet is giving me those boy band smooth vibes, I love it so much! His voice is soooo familiar I am so sure about this one by the way.
My guess and I am so sure of this is:
Nick Lachey
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: This one I recognized immediately, the voice was really easy to figure out, but these clues also are pretty convincing (oh and he was on Ken’s show, I Can See Your Voice, so it’s not surprising that he would be on this show):
The clue package had a dating show vibe = reminiscent of Love is Blind, the Netflix dating show he hosts with his wife Vanessa
The world saw his heart break= he had a very public relationship with his ex-wife Jessica Simpson and they even had a reality show together called Newlyweds
Cluedle-doo clue: “knows how to stay cool even in the heat”= referring to his past aka his boy band 98 degrees (get it? Because that’s the heat and they are cool because they are a boy band... well played Masked Singer well played... I wanna meet whoever makes these clues because they are great with puns and they seem super clever)
3. Chameleon 🦎
Tumblr media
Commentary: Chameleon surprised me I am not gonna lie. I thought he was going to be another athlete like Whatchamacallit last season or White Tiger from season 3 because he was so tall but nope he surprised me with his rendition of Ride with Me by Nelly. He seems like a legit rapper and I liked him a lot than I thought I would honestly so this guess isn’t totally out of left field.
My guess is that this is...
Wiz Khalifa
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: so yeah, the voice and the height kinda gave it away to me (Wiz is 6 foot 4 inches and his body type matches the chameleon), but also yeah clues I have to give you guys some logic bombs instead of being like eh that voice and height BOOM WIZ KHALIFA... yeah no it doesn’t work like that, so here are the logic bombs hehe:
Dice with 2 and 3 on it= he did a song with Miley Cyrus called 23
007 clue= he has a song called (yes this is real, look it up) James Bong (omg I am trying not to laugh while typing this but whatttt?! Google really is a gem omg 😳😂) and he played James Bond in the music video
His love of technology & “put tech in technicolor”= apparently, the guy is a huge tech geek and has said it in a lot of interviews (wow humans are so complex and cool, I would have never thought that this man is a tech savvy guy... but the more you know I guess <P.S. I Googled half of these things... like idk this off the top of my head duh, I usually go by voice with my guesses and then I google the clues>)
4. Grandpa Monster
Tumblr media
Commentary: He sang Mambo No. 5 and yeah it’s a basic choice for a song, but I liked it. He is not my favorite by any means and now that I listen to it again, I can only hear this person and I am not a fan of him like whatsoever (even tho I gotta acknowledge he has changed and I have *I KNOW... I HATE ME TOO* agreed with stuff he has said in his podcast un ironically.... yeah I am so sorry, I hate myself for saying this too... anyways let’s just get to the person I mean
I have a sneaking suspicion that it is (unfortunately):
Logan Paul
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: Yup, um... I really hope I am wrong but honestly ever since someone said it in the YouTube comments section of his performance, I can’t un hear it and I am shook honestly (at least it’s not his brother... I mean we can get worse, and he has respected the pandemic and not been a prick like his *cough* brother *cough*... just saying.. oh and if you don’t know what I am talking about or who this is, he’s a YouTuber who got into some um controversy because he filmed a dead body in 2018 so there’s that... oh and his brother has done a billion worse things than him, but you can Google that one if you are interested in finding out more because it’s too much for me to talk about and we are not even talking about Jake (that’s the brother))... Anyways, sorry, I ramble, but ugh the clues seem convincing and it irks me that it is because I am not a fan of neither of these guys and I don’t want them in the show but whatever I guess he’s the lesser of 2 evils:
He was a troublemaking fool as a youngster= yeah probably regarding that suicide forest video a couple of years ago (that ok, lemme give him credit, he has apologized for it and has kind of proven himself... yuck I hate saying that, I am NOT defending him I swear)
Acting out for all eyes on me= he used to be very well known for pranks on his channel back in the day (before the incident) and he did some stupid stuff for clout lemme tell ya (I never liked these guys, like ever, I thought they were weird.... not my demographic I guess, I wasn’t 12 nor a boy)
6 in Xs and Os like football plays = he did play football 🏈 in high school, he was so good that and actually attributes playing football for long term brain damage he has that makes him as the Wikipedia article says it (I am legit gonna quote what it says because I thought it was fascinating) “affects his ability to have empathy and a human connection with others.” (Mind you, he himself claimed this according to this article)
“Acting out”= he has acted in a few things before and starred in The Thinning
Web with the shooting star= he is a web star, get it? YouTube... web star... hehe again these clue writers are *chef’s kiss*
Cluedle-doo clue: he has trained for battle= now his new thing is boxing and he has trained for actual fights before, his first one being against British YouTuber KSI which he lost... oh and I almost forgot, how can I forget this cute little detail.... he is set to fight Floyd Mayweather this summer apparently... OH AND DID I MENTION HE IS MAKING 5 MILLION DOLLARS FROM THIS DEAL?! He’s winning either way with this fight like damn... but that wasn’t part of it, I just thought it was trippy... again I say, Google is a gem, u find some interesting reads
Ok so that’s it (what a great note to end on lol)! I hope you guys enjoy! Sorry for it being so long and taking so much time to do.. it’s been a crazy last couple of days! I will try to get the next one this upcoming weekend so I’ll see you guys then. (Ohhh btw I now live tweet the show on my Twitter- @photolover82 so if you want to follow me on there and live tweet with me, that can be fun!) Bye guys and don’t forget to like, comment, and do all the social media-y things, you know the drill!

I’d like to get your thoughts on this, hope this is okay!
Look at this quote from this article:
“It’s easy to pick on the “this wouldn’t be happening if these characters were coded as male,” but it’s nonetheless true—as a fan of the unrepentantly (gloriously) awful Bill Cipher, among others, I can promise you I see it regularly.”
I immediately thought of this blog when I read this.
Not saying you’re misogynist, of course. This blog is just so fascinating, and for someone to dismiss it all like that is frustrating.
I mean, of course they weren’t referring to you directly, but still.
For someone to brush off people’s interesting, thought-provoking theories as nothing but misogyny is kind of close-minded, in my opinion.
But this makes me curious. Do you think you’d still feel the same way about Bill if he was more feminine-coded? Would it matter?
And what do you think about that statement? Are you as annoyed by it as I am?
It’s always alright to get my thoughts on certain subjects, Anon! And lucky for you, I have lots of thoughts on this.
First of all, thank you for liking my blog! I put a lot of work into it, and I still look back on everything I’ve done here fondly. This blog is my only fandom-specific blog that’s still semi-active even after I’ve left the fandom.
And, about what you said about misogyny... I don’t actually think that’s what the article is talking about. It’s not misogyny for someone to pick apart Bill Cipher, but it’s misogyny if someone offers that level of potential depth to a male character while instantly condemning a female character.
But... honestly, from my experience? These two groups of people are different groups.
I used to run in those “anti” circles, back in 2015? 2016? Before the whole “SU criti/cal” thing started to become popular. But I could still kinda see hints of it? It was back when SU was hailed as THE perfect show, before people knocked it off the pedestal they put it on.
Anyway. These people hated redemption arcs. They saw Bill as this irredeemable monolith of a character, and any alternate interpretations were met with outright malice. I got called out once for, and I am not joking, headcanoning Bill as an abuse victim. They claimed I was “excusing his actions,” but when I asked to please show a screenshot of where I said that this excused him, they couldn’t. Because I never said that.
(I ended up publishing the whole headcanon on my main blog, and people loved it. That reception is what pushed me to create this blog.)
I don’t doubt at least some of those people became the type to nitpick SU. So I feel that the same people that nitpick male characters are also the type to nitpick female ones. They’re just nitpickers with a black-and-white sense of morality.
But there are always exceptions to the rule- people who love morally gray male characters but hate morally grey female characters. Yes, some of these motivations may be spurred on by misogyny. But what frustrates me is the initial assumption of malice. I’m not saying the article itself is guilty of this, as it seems to be speaking to a general problem, but more those tumblr posts or tweets trying to “call people out” if they gravitate towards more morally gray male characters than female ones.
Which brings me to my answer to your question: No, I don’t think I would like Bill as much, had he been a woman.
But please let me explain first.
First, you need to know some facts about me:
I am transmasculine. (Not a trans man- I’m nonbinary.)
I have a personality disorder. I’m not comfortable disclosing which one, but it’s one of the cluster B ones.
I was abused, and my reaction to the abuse was extreme anger and irritability. (Hence the PD.)
Another important fact is that my abuser was a woman. She’s my mother. I had to live with constant emotional abuse, gaslighting, neglect and other forms of malice for my whole life. I’m still not free yet, and I’m turning 20 in a month. (No, literally, exactly one month to the day.)
I was abused my whole life by a vindictive, manipulative shit of a woman, and it made me into a vindictive, manipulative shit of a person. The key difference is that I am actively trying not to be a vindictive, manipulative shit.
When I pick apart asshole male characters, I see myself in them. I do a deep dive into the whys, the hows the whos of why they ended up the way that they did, because it makes me feel liberated. It’s personally liberating to see someone like me, whom everyone sees as a monster, have a backstory that shows that monsters aren’t born, they’re made. It’s liberating to see them try and change, it’s liberating to give them someone to help them change no matter what, it’s liberating to look harder. Because that’s what I wanted. I wanted someone to look at me and see past the violent, angry 15 year old that I was, and actually help me. I wanted someone to see I was a victim, that I didn’t like being the way that I was. I wanted someone to help me and be there for me, even though I was messed up and awful.
(But don’t feel too bad for me- A few years ago I met someone wonderful through this very fandom who was exactly the kind of person I needed. And last November I proposed to him and he said yes!)
When I see a morally grey female character... all I can see is my abuser. I see in them the person that hurt me. I don’t want to look deeper, just as I don’t care about my mother’s long rambles about how shitty her childhood was. Was she also abused? Yes. Do I care? Nope! I don’t feel that same drive to pick apart female characters that act like the male ones I like, because of my trauma.
And honestly? Just because I gravitate towards male characters more doesn’t make me a misogynist. How I treat actual real life women does. I do examine my behavior to make sure I’m not being misogynistic- in fact, it was worry that I was being misogynistic in my dislike of these characters that made me think hard enough to have such a long answer to your question.
Maybe someone liking only male characters is an indicator of misogyny. Maybe it isn’t. I’m not shy about talking about what happened to me but people should not have to disclose their traumas in order to be “allowed” to consume fiction in a way some stranger doesn’t like.
And there actually is a specific subset of morally grey female characters I like: my own OCs.
I guess it’s the fact that I created them and thus can control how they act? They’re all assholes and I love them so much, but I don’t feel that same aversion as I do with characters that aren’t mine. Because the lack of control I had over my own abusive situation is what fucked me up so hard, but now I do have the control. If I watch a TV show, I don’t have any control over what the characters do, they’re not mine. But I do have control over my OCs.
(Psst- if you wanna see those OCs, I’ve since moved to the Invader Zim fandom, and am working on a HUGE fic series for it. (It’s not published yet- I’m working on it behind the scenes.) Those OCs I’m talking about star heavily. Here’s my blog, if you’re interested. I kinda wanna do some metaposting for that fandom, too, but I’ve no idea where to start. I love the Irkens, though, haha. Anyway if any of you happen to like IZ and have a meta-question for me... the askbox IS open!)
Anyway. This got really long. But misogyny in fandom is a thing, and the article does call it out well. I just get frustrated that people immediately assume malice. The statement does annoy me, but because it does happen if the characters are coded as male, too. I see it all the time. People just tend to either be fans of the morally grey, or... not.

[Music]
Carrie Gillon: Hi, and welcome to the Vocal Fries podcast, the podcast about linguistic discrimination!
Megan Figueroa: I’m Megan Figueroa.
Carrie Gillon: I’m Carrie Gillon.
Megan Figueroa: Oh, Carrie, I was so weirded out when I was about to say my name because we just recorded a future episode about names.
Carrie Gillon: And you’re like, “What is my own name? Ahh!”
Megan Figueroa: It’s true because sometimes I say /mɛgən/ and sometimes I say /mɛɪgən/ because I’m the weirdest Megan.
Carrie Gillon: Oh, I’ve never noticed that. But for me, I basically can’t tell the difference before a G because I think I just collapse it to one of them. So, it’s not distinctive for me.
Megan Figueroa: Yeah. It is for me because it’s my name and I’ve heard it so many which ways, but when I say it, I feel like I’m collapsing them on purpose to give people the out of you can say it either way because I hear it either way all the time. Just letting people know, it’s okay if you say /mɛgən/ or /mɛɪgən/.
Carrie Gillon: That is good to say that.
Megan Figueroa: Yeah.
Carrie Gillon: Whereas, I’m like, “No. Has to be /kɛɹi/.”
Megan Figueroa: Well, my mother says /mɛgən/. If for some reason I really wanna articulate my name carefully, I think I definitely say /mɛɪgən/. I don’t actually know how my dad says it because he always says, “Mi hija.” I’m like, “I’m gonna notice next time.” Either way, ya’ll, is fine.
But speaking of language – just kidding. [Laughter] I’m so bad at these transitions. We’re always talking about language. It was a big weekend last week for Parasite at the Oscars.
Carrie Gillon: I was watching the Oscars and I actually voted for it to win all the categories that it won because I just love the movie so much. I was shocked that it won for all of the things that I said it would win for.
Megan Figueroa: You’re shocked not because it didn’t deserve it but because you just didn’t expect the academy to do it.
Carrie Gillon: Because I love it, so clearly, I think it deserves it. I just was shocked, especially after it won Best Non-English – whatever they call it now. I was like, “Ugh, it’s for sure not gonna win Best Picture,” but I chose for both for some reason and it did.
Megan Figueroa: Well, chills because it kind of – okay. This is the way the Oscars has set itself up that I have, and I think a lot of people had, the expectation that there’s no way the picture that won in Best Non-English would also win the Best Picture because it’s literally never happened.
Carrie Gillon: Right. I couldn’t remember if a movie like that had ever been nominated for both categories before. We were trying to remember – couldn’t remember.
Megan Figueroa: But not won. Certainly not won.
Carrie Gillon: Certainly not won, but possibly never even been nominated. It was definitely unprecedented in either direction. I was so happy because last year’s winner was a bit problematic.
Megan Figueroa: Was that Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood? I don’t even remember – no, no. Sorry. La La Land? What was last year?
Carrie Gillon: La La Land didn’t win. It was Moonlight, remember?
Megan Figueroa: Oh, that was the best! The chaos.
Carrie Gillon: No. Last year was The Green Book.
Megan Figueroa: Oh, yeah.
Carrie Gillon: Anyway.
Megan Figueroa: Was that like a mea culpa thing? The – Parasite – god.
Carrie Gillon: I just think – obviously, I can’t read their minds. I don’t know what happened but, honestly, I think this movie is just that good that it kinda blew the competition out of the water. I thought maybe Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood would win because it’s about Hollywood and LA loves to give itself plaudits – kind of why I thought originally La La Land had won, even though it didn’t. But, no, they went with the actually, genuinely best film.
Megan Figueroa: I haven’t seen it. I’m one of the two people –
Carrie Gillon: Get thee to a theater!
Megan Figueroa: I know. I know. So, no spoilers here. Just the fact that – I mean, again, I am glad that we’re moving a little bit forward that we can break this precedent where no non-English film has won Best Picture because of course non-English films can be best picture. C’mon.
Carrie Gillon: Well, right. Last year, Roma was nominated.
Megan Figueroa: Oh, that’s right.
Carrie Gillon: Roma probably should’ve won. It’s certainly better than Green Book.
Megan Figueroa: Did it win Best Foreign Film? Because it was called “Best Foreign Film” last year I think, wasn’t it?
Carrie Gillon: I think you’re right, and I don’t remember.
Megan Figueroa: Well, anyway.
Carrie Gillon: I don’t remember if it was nominated for both.
Megan Figueroa: I think he won for Best Director though – the Roma director – because it was like Mexico, Mexico, Mexico, that same director.
Carrie Gillon: I think that’s correct. Anyway, speaking of Parasite, John Miller – @MillerStream on Twitter – tweeted this lovely tweet, “A man named Bong Joon Ho wins #Oscar for Best Original Screenplay over Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood and 1917. Acceptance speech was, ‘Great honor. Thank you.’ The he proceeds to give the rest of his speech in Korean. These people are the destruction of America.”
Megan Figueroa: There’s – okay. [Laughter] It’s so layered, Carrie. Racism is the stinkiest onion of all. I hate that – I think, just given his tweet, he’s making a point of the quote-unquote “broken English,” right? I’m imagining him pulling it out and writing it exactly word for word what he said because what did he say?
Carrie Gillon: He claimed that Bong said, “Great honor. Thank you.” And, honestly, I don’t remember –
Megan Figueroa: If that’s what he actually said?
Carrie Gillon: Yeah. He said something along those lines, but I dunno if he’s quoting directly or not.
Megan Figueroa: I don’t have any – Alberto Rios called it “generosity of spirit.” I don’t have any generosity of spirit. I think that he’s probably mocking his English too in that little bit.
Carrie Gillon: Right. I mean, why would you give him any benefit of the doubt? He’s saying these people are the destruction of America.
Megan Figueroa: Okay. He starts out mocking his English and then being upset that how dare any other language be spoken on the Oscar stage and then othering – okay. That’s the ultimate othering. And then you’re just gonna directly other by saying, “these people.”
Carrie Gillon: I mean, it’s worse than othering. This is straight up xenophobia.
Megan Figueroa: I mean, I’m surprised he didn’t pull out some of the cockroach imagery or – you know.
Carrie Gillon: Right. I mean, the next step is that, for sure. Then, he claims in the next tweet that he’s not talking about Koreans. He says, quote, “These people,” unquote, “are obviously not Koreans, but those in Hollywood awarding a film that stokes flames of class warfare over two films I thought were more deserving simply to show how woke they are. That should be clear from the rest of what I tweeted about tonight’s production.” No. It’s not clear. And also, I think you’re lying.
Megan Figueroa: So lying. Well, because it probably went viral, he got ratioed I’m sure, hopefully.
Carrie Gillon: I can’t tell, but I’m pretty sure. It did get 32,000 likes.
Megan Figueroa: Well, there’s a lot of racists on Twitter. It’s a cesspool.
Carrie Gillon: I mean, there’re a lot of racists in general, period. And, in this case, super racists because a lot of people are racist. But anyway.
Megan Figueroa: Oh, yeah. Yes. This outwardly “I don’t want your language or you people in my Oscars or in my grocery store or anywhere in my space – in my white public space.”
Carrie Gillon: And also, no. I am sorry. Neither of those movies are more deserving. Okay. We have an email from Kelly. “Hi Megan and Carrie, I just listened to your February 3rd episode and wanted to echo something that Daniel mentioned re: one of your perspective guests he suggested to you” – the Scottish Gaelic consultant for Outlander. I’m not saying his name because I forgot to look up the pronunciation beforehand, and I don’t wanna mess it up.
“If you’re already Outlander fans, you may already know this, but if not, you might enjoy checking out the series.” I still have not seen it. I know so many people love it.
Megan Figueroa: I know. I need to watch it.
Carrie Gillon: I just have so many shows that I love that it’s hard to slot in a new one, but I do really kinda wanna hear some Scottish Gaelic.
Megan Figueroa: I know. Well, how am I supposed to fit it in when I keep watching Schitt’s Creek over and over again? [Laughter]
Carrie Gillon: At least I’m not doing that.
Megan Figueroa: Anyway, back to the email.
Carrie Gillon: One of my favorite shows is about to start again so, anyway. “He’s been a guest on a couple episodes of the Outlander podcast where he’s talked about his approach to consulting on the Scottish Gaelic used in the production. The showrunner, Ron Moore” – who’s also the show runner for Battlestar Galactica, just FYI – “also talks about the use of Scottish Gaelic in a couple of episodes of THE OFFICIAL OUTLANDER PODCAST” – all capital letters, so I think that’s actually its name – “and how they opted not to use subtitles for it to keep the audience tightly in the protagonist, Claire’s, point of view. Since she doesn’t understand the Gaelic, we don’t get subtitles for it. In other parts of the series, they’re in France and, since Claire has French, we get subtitles so that we understand the same content that she does.” That’s an interesting choice.
Megan Figueroa: That’s really interesting, yeah.
Carrie Gillon: “I just thought that was a cool and unusual way for a TV production to approach incorporating an additional language. Also, Outlander does a pretty good job overall of portraying languages and multilingualism in a positive light. One of the main characters, Jaime, is a polyglot. In the books, he’s described as having a talent for languages and he knows at least English, Scotts – Scottish Gaelic – French, German, Latin, and I think Classical Greek. Claire speaks French and English. More recent seasons also include Spanish, Mohawk and, if I remember correctly, a character who speaks Dutch. Anyhow, they build a world that includes the basic assumption that people will and should speak different languages, which is refreshing.” I agree.
Megan Figueroa: Yeah!
Carrie Gillon: “There’re still some arseholes. One scene stands out in which a bunch of British soldiers make fun of a Scotsman’s phonology, but it’s a really enjoyable series with a lot of details that language nerds can enjoy. Hope you get a chance to check it out.” Thank you, Kelly.
Megan Figueroa: Well, now I have to watch it because a listener suggested it.
Carrie Gillon: Yes. And also the language stuff does pique my interest quite a bit.
Megan Figueroa: Is it on Netflix? Do we know?
Carrie Gillon: I do not know. I’m sure listeners will let us know.
Megan Figueroa: Yes. Also, this is not an advertisement for Netflix.
Carrie Gillon: Unless they would like to. [Laughter] Yeah, Netflix, you wanna send some of those billions of dollars you’re spending on content. Doesn’t even have to be in the millions.
Megan Figueroa: No. No. We’re very humble people over here.
Carrie Gillon: Very humbled all the time by things. [Laughter] All right. Well, this week’s episode is all about storytelling. We talk with Anna Marie Trester – not Anna Maria, which I briefly mis-call her.
Megan Figueroa: Me too. What a good sport.
Carrie Gillon: Yes.
[Music]
Carrie Gillon: Today, we have Dr. Anna Marie Trester who is the founder of Career Linguist. She’s an educator, researcher, and consultant who is passionate about bringing linguistics to work. She helps linguists figure out better ways of articulating how our expertise is useful and helps a world of work use linguists to solve the kinds of puzzles we are uniquely equipped to solve. She’s also interested in storytelling as the author of Bringing Linguistics to Work: A Story Listening, Story Finding and Story Telling Approach to Your Career. Welcome, Anna Maria – Anna Marie? Anna Maria. [Laughter]
Anna Marie Trester: Oh, yeah. That has been my whole life. I answer to both. I’ve had business cards that say “Anna Maria” and I, yeah, I understand and celebrate this.
Carrie Gillon: Well, it also makes me think of Anna Maria Tremonti – a Canadian journalist – and I think that’s where I always wanna go because your name is so close.
Megan Figueroa: And you’re from southern Arizona so, like, or at least spend a lot of time.
Anna Marie Trester: I’ve lived a significant portion of my life in Tucson – high school, college. And, yeah, I still light up – I was at a book reading the other night and the author hinted that she was from Arizona. And it’s like, “Where are you from?” And she goes, “Tucson.” And ahh! [Laughter]
Megan Figueroa: I love that. Surely, you’re not the only Anna Maria in Tucson.
Carrie Gillon: Anna Marie.
Megan Figueroa: I mean – I know. That’s what I’m saying, you know?
Anna Marie Trester: Also, there’re Tresters in Tucson. My last name is quite uncommon, but when I say “Trester” in Tucson, I’m often asked, “Are you related to the So-and-So Tresters?” I am not, that I know of.
Megan Figueroa: Well, you’re so close – Rebecca Traister.
Carrie Gillon: Oh, yeah! [Laughter]
Megan Figueroa: I’m sorry. What we’re really saying is, your name is very, very perfect and interesting.
Anna Marie Trester: I love it. I teach storytelling to people, and one of the first ice breakers that I like to do is tell a story about your name. There are endless – or I do this at networking events too. We just go around and, you know, the linguists always have interesting stories to tell about their names. It’s a great way to start.
Megan Figueroa: So, you say you spend a lot of time in Tucson, but I am hearing a little bit of Minnesota.
Anna Marie Trester: I’m Canadian and mid-western. I moved around a lot when I was growing up and I blame that on why I became a linguist because every time I moved, I would have an accent, and then try to not have an accent, and then have more of an accent, and what I have now is a big mix.
Megan Figueroa: Well, I think every linguist has some sort of story or a moment where they realize that their language was X or someone else’s and they want to know the answer, and then all of a sudden, they’re down this rabbit hole of what is linguistics.
Anna Marie Trester: 30 years later.
Megan Figueroa: Yeah. Sure.
Carrie Gillon: Let’s begin with Career Linguist. Why did you start that?
Anna Marie Trester: Well, it’s a funny story actually. I was teaching at Georgetown University. I was the director of a program that was focused on professional applications of linguistics – the MLC shout out, the MLC program, Masters in Language and Communication at Georgetown. I taught them a course that was called “The Professionalization Seminar.” In the course, one of the things that we did was your picked an organization and your did an ethnography – I called it a mini ethnography – where you spent some time and, if you could, get in the doors of that organization. Be an ethnographer. Talk to people who work there, spend any time that you can learning about it in any way that you can.
Anyways, we were doing this project and my students were like, “Why aren’t you doing an ethnography of an organization of interest?” It’s like, “Oh, okay. I accept that challenge.” So, they had a portfolio that was an online portfolio. I had been kinda blogging and doing some stuff but, you know, put it all together into Career Linguist. That started in, like, 20 – I mean, that was probably 20 – oh, yeah. In the aughts we said 2006.
Megan Figueroa: Yep. We sure did.
Anna Marie Trester: I mean, I first was dabbling when I was a graduate student then I guess it became – I think it became a thing in like 2012/2014 that I was Career Linguist. I even forget. Anyways, that’s how it started. Then, over the years blogging, sort of found my voice – what is this gonna be? Why am I trying to say? Who am I trying to talk to? Defining – so now I would say, yeah, it’s a resource center and it’s a blog where I share ideas about career. I think, write, and speak about career – so musings and job ads. Today I posted some job ads up there.
Megan Figueroa: What does a job ad look like that you might wanna share with people?
Anna Marie Trester: I share things that I come across that sound interesting. The ones I posted this morning were job ads for an organization called “Appen,” who’ve actually hired me recently to talk about – they wanna think about making recruiting be more human.
Megan Figueroa: Instead of algorithms and stuff?
Anna Marie Trester: Yeah. I’m actually organizing networking events in different cities where people who work at the organization come – and I’m hoping to do one in Tucson soon, or Phoenix. We’ll see. This organization hires tons of linguists. No matter where you go in the states or in Australia – they’re actually housed in Australia, this organization. I dunno if they’re gonna send me to Australia but – hey! If anyone’s listening, who wants to? That’d be great.
But just get people to talk about “You work here. What’s it like to work here? I’m thinking about working here,” just bringing it to an interpersonal interaction. Then, I posted another job. I have been really interested in Nextdoor. I dunno if you know this app. It’s big out here and – I live in Silicon Valley area.  They seem to be very thoughtful about what that app can do. It builds community. They’re always asking, and they listed: sociologist, psychologist, anthropologist.
And I’m like, “Hello! You’re looking for a linguist.” They want people who are thoughtful about community and are theorizing about community and the role of social media in organizing community. They cite Bowling Alone, extensively – you never see this in a job ad where they’re doing a lit review and citing research, so I need to meet whoever this is that’s writing these job ads.
It’s an app where people can get to know their neighbors, ask things like –
Carrie Gillon: This one, yes!
Anna Marie Trester: You’ll ask like, “Is there a power outage?” This kind of thing. “Did somebody just hear a noise? What was that?”
Megan Figueroa: I joined that and then, as someone who likes true crime as – like, I’m one of those women that listen to true crime for my anxiety – I thought that it was really scary because people were like, “Why are the cops” – so I was informed of every situation in which the cops were involved.
Anna Marie Trester: This is why they need a social – they know that they need people to be thoughtful –
Megan Figueroa: Yeah. That’s good.
Anna Marie Trester: Yeah! They’re aware.
Megan Figueroa: Right. And it was a little bit racist.
Carrie Gillon: Oh, there’re a lot of people on there who’re racist, yeah.
Megan Figueroa: I was like, “Why are you informing me that a sketchy-looking person was walking through the neighborhood?” Let people walk through fucking neighborhoods, you know?
Anna Marie Trester: Well, if that conversation happens there, it’s a tool, it’s a platform, so people have these conversations. Exactly this conversation happens weekly, daily.
Megan Figueroa: This kind of job would be to see what people – you kinda wanna be behind the scenes and see how that can be facilitated or prevented or what is that, do you think?
Anna Marie Trester: I have so many different jobs, but the one that I posted was about – so they call it the “product.” This is how Silicon Valley talks about the community as a product. So, these people are thinking about how the technology, I guess, could be structured. I’m not a tech person, but I like to think about how tech needs us because they do.
So, I mean, kudos to them. They’re realizing they need someone who’s aware of social science and human theory to think about how they’re developing this technology so that, if there is that – if that is making certain conversations really easy to have – maybe we can shape that.
Megan Figueroa: Absolutely. Then, you need – this is great – you need linguists because – or people that think about these questions – because then you’re like, “Okay. At what point is it hate speech, and when can we flag that, and when are encroaching on the first amendment?” and all of that.
Carrie Gillon: Well, it doesn’t encroach on first amendment because it’s not the government.
Megan Figueroa: Ah. Good point. Yes. But that’s not – so I did a, how do you say it, a consultation with a tech company and they were asking me these questions about their avatars and if people can talk to each other about these things, when will people feel like their first amendment rights are being encroached upon?
It’s not just that maybe they know, perhaps, that they can do whatever they want, but they don’t want people to feel like their rights are being encroached upon because then people get pissy.
Carrie Gillon: Yes. They do. Because they don’t understand what the law actually is.
Megan Figueroa: As I just showed. [Laughter] I’m just in the presence of Anna Marie and I’m thinking about all these ways linguists can help people in other sorts of jobs.
Anna Marie Trester: Absolutely.
Megan Figueroa: I mean, who thinks – we don’t think about it enough.
Anna Marie Trester: We have something to say in every – we are thoughtful about language and communication and how it means, like, how language does things everywhere. No matter where you are, if you’re working, you’re using language, so you could use a linguist. You need a linguist. I’ll say it.
Carrie Gillon: Everyone needs a linguist. They just don’t know that they need one.
Anna Marie Trester: They just don’t know it.
Megan Figueroa: Just put that linguist in your pocket. You need one. Just carry it around.
Anna Marie Trester: I think a lot about job ads, right? I actually was writing – I’m putting an activity in my new book where I’m calling it, “Put yourself into conversation with a job ad.” This is an activity that I like to do. There was a job that I saw recently at Earthjustice, this is a law firm that focuses on climate change. Their tagline, I love it, is “Because the earth needs a good lawyer.”
Megan Figueroa: Aw, that’s awesome!
Anna Marie Trester: That’s their organizational catchphrase. But then they’ve realized that they need people to be helping them communicate internally, like within the organization, and the way that they wrote this job ad, it’s just – I’m putting it in my book. I’m using it as an example of when you see a job ad like this, it almost is – they’re not asking for a linguist, but they are saying what they need is someone who can help them be thoughtful about how they are talking to each other in ways that can be excluding or –
You know, when people think about diversity, they’re like, “Oh, yeah. We need to hire more. Yeah. It’s great. Hire more diverse teams.” Then, the work really begins when we start talking about thinking about how does the way that interact, talk inclusivity into being. It’s gonna happen all day every day, a thousand times a day, that there’s gonna be a million interactions that we can all be more thoughtful about.
Megan Figueroa I’m actually impressed that they got to that point because a lot of places will check the box of being quote-unquote “diverse” because they hired someone that doesn’t look like everyone else or whatever. Then, it stops there.
Anna Marie Trester: It starts there.
Megan Figueroa: Exactly, right? Yeah!
Carrie Gillon: Well, I think it’s actually certain kinds of organizations are more thoughtful about this than others. Universities are possibly – I might as well say the worst – but they’re way behind some kind of organizations because they’re just – they’re like, “Well, we’re good. We have all these students from all over the place.”
Anna Marie Trester: Carrie, I love that you say that because – so a lot of people reach out to me with questions about applying for jobs. They’ll see a job ad or have an interaction with somebody where they’re like, “This person isn’t very thoughtful about – they’re telling me I need to get more training in Python.” And you’re gonna encounter plenty of people who don’t get it, but we have to be okay – better than okay – we have to welcome this opportunity to talk about who we are, or what we do, what we can bring.
A lot of people aren’t gonna get it, and that doesn’t mean that we need to stop. That’s why we need to keep talking about why we care about what we care about and what we can offer because we have – I say, the world needs us. The world needs more of us.
Megan Figueroa: I was thinking recently about what happened because I’m on a campus and there was an ad for an accent modification workshop, and I was just thinking, it’s like, “Someone probably asked for that or require” – I don’t know who on the uppers wanted it. But why can’t there be someone that’s like, “If we’re gonna do that, we need to do accent accommodation workshops too” or something like that? If this is something that we’re really gonna keep doing – because I see it all the time, and I don’t see it dying.
Anna Marie Trester: Well, so my dissertation research was on improv, so I take a “Yes, and…” approach always to life. It’s how I think. When I was at Georgetown, the business school approached me. Somebody went to a conference and learned about ethnography, and then they came back and looked at the course calendar – who’s teaching ethnography – and it was me. They brought me over for a meeting and they were like, “We wanna have some resources for our international students.” And I was like, “Yes, and what I see here is an opportunity to talk to everybody about what we all can learn about” –
To their credit, they took me up on it and that turned into a five-year project that we called “Talking Business” where we all learned – and we have so much that we can learn from the experience of an international student who can tell us so much about what they’re learning and observing about how we communicate.
Megan Figueroa: Perhaps here how when they’re in class, how hard it is for them when they’re listening to an American accent. I mean, just these things that would make others more empathetic toward others.
Anna Marie Trester: Well, at the end of the day, we just have to realize that our ways of speaking are always unique. We decide that there is a way that we talk to one another, but that is always contextually situated and negotiated and constructed.
Megan Figueroa: “Talking Business” – I love that. I’m happy to hear to there are some places that are running with this idea of we’re all in this together, basically, as cheesy as it sounds.
Anna Marie Trester: It is so much fun. They really opened their doors to us. What we did was they let us record all of their interactions. Then, when somebody in that group wanted to know – we just would offer it to them. Like, “If you would like to have a conversational style consult, let us know.” If they said yes to us – and I’m gonna be reaching out to these folks because it’s now been 10 years, so how has this – has this helped? I hope that it has.
We would be able to pull up – we had video. And I had, at that time, a team of seven research assistants, so we could cue up the video and we could find an example of them, like, “This is how you have an argument with a classmate,” “This is how you make a persuasive presentation,” “This is how you” – and we could help them be thoughtful and reflective on, “This is how you are using language. Here’s some ways that could be interpreted, misinterpreted. There’s ways that this makes a lot of sense in this context, how could this” –
I had one student, he was about to become a Dean, and he realized that he had to totally recalibrate – moving from being a student to being a Dean – he had to totally recalibrate how you do humility, for example. When invested with a lot of institutional power, it’s totally different how you be folksy.
Megan Figueroa: That’s something I didn’t even think about because I just don’t have a lot of power, Anna Marie, so I don’t have to think about how I talk when it comes – how am I gonna sound more down to earth? Well, I couldn’t be further down here.
Carrie Gillon: There’s always lower you could be.
Megan Figueroa: I know. I’m sure. [Laughter]
Anna Marie Trester: With Career Linguist, I find I’m often experimenting with trying on a little bit more power. There’s ways that, especially women – and we live in a world where what gets heard as “confident,” and I’m using air quotes. People love to tell women, “You need to change the way that you talk You need to sound more confident. And you need to” – you know?
Megan Figueroa: Right. Plus vocal fry.
Anna Marie Trester: Aye yae yae. Okay. Let’s think about what gets heard as confident. I’m working on this new book that is – right now, I’m calling it, “Employing Linguistics,” we’ll see how that – I want there to be that ambiguity because it’s about work, but it’s not just about work. It’s how you use linguistics.
I’m starting off with a story from a woman who’s just starting off her professional life. She just graduated. She’s got a masters in linguistics, and she’s launching her own business. And I do workshops. I travel and do workshops at linguistics departments around the country and world, now. I went to Finland last –
Megan Figueroa: Ooo!
Anna Marie Trester: It was so great. Yeah. In Finland, they were saying, “Maybe it’s just here, but we have a hard time projecting power.” Like, “Yeah, no, it’s not just here.” But I was playing them this interview from this woman because they were saying, “She doesn’t sound confident.” And I’m like, “And yet, I’m telling you, this woman is launching her own business. She knows what the hell she’s doing. She’s doing it.” Okay. We need to really question what we are saying when we say, “That person sounds” –
Megan Figueroa: Going back to job ads, some of the language they use in job ads is so off-putting.
Carrie Gillon: It makes it sound really boring, a.), and then b.), yeah, it’s like, “Oh, I don’t think they want someone like me.”
Megan Figueroa: Or I’m like, “Is there some tinge of sexism or something here?” And I’m like, “Do I wanna work for them?”
Carrie Gillon: Yeah. That’s kinda what I meant.
Anna Marie Trester: This is where I mean we have to – I like to say that we linguists, we lean in when we hear miscommunication, misunderstanding – yeah. There are problems, and they need us. I mentioned that collaboration. I’m finding this organization, Appen, they’re open to me talking with them about even it starts with the job ad. When you’re talking about who you’re looking for, there’s gonna be – we all have a way that we can become more aware of how we’re using language and embedding our own perspective. This is a process that we all need to be working.
Megan Figueroa: Someone emailed me and asked me for some perspective on a job that they were sending out. My first thought was, “Can you explicitly put that ‘You may read these job qualifications and think that you’re not qualified. Try anyway’?”
Anna Marie Trester: Nice.
Megan Figueroa: Because I’m like – this is something that I run into where I’m like – and I have to be like, “All right. Put on your cap and think about all the people that are just like” – you know, more confidently.
Anna Marie Trester: “I have one of those things.”
Megan Figueroa: Yeah. Just be more like that because you never know. I wanted them to put that specifically because it’s women or other minoritized people that are going to read that and say, “I’ll pass on even applying.”
Anna Marie Trester: Absolutely. A thousand times, yes.
Megan Figueroa: I was happy just to know that someone was reaching out, that people are being more thoughtful about this.
Anna Marie Trester: People are. They need help. And we’re gonna make mistakes. We’re gonna make a couple of mistakes. We need to get better at – this is where my improv, I think, is such a boon to me because it really taught me how to make mistakes and to be a little bit easier about “I messed that up and we need to try again.”
Megan Figueroa: What? Are you telling me that improv is basically therapy? Is that what you’re saying? Because it’s like, that’s where I learned that!
Anna Marie Trester: What if I told you my improv troupe was called “Cheaper Than Therapy”? [Laughter]
Megan Figueroa: Oh, perfect. Well, I mean, it’s funny because you said you’re always “Yes, and…” because my therapist taught me that.
Carrie Gillon: So, your therapist is probably from improv because –
Megan Figueroa: I think that’s what they’re teaching now to people that go this route – all these new techniques. But it’s like, sure –
Carrie Gillon: Someone from improv started that.
Megan Figueroa: The facilitator of what workshop or whatever.
Anna Marie Trester: I taught improv for about 10 years in Washington, DC. I got so many people, they would tell me, that they came into improv because their therapist told them to come to improv. I started having relationships with therapists who were recommending their clients come to work with me because they knew that I was thoughtful and welcoming, particularly embracing of this kind of work.
Megan Figueroa: I mean, it applies to anything, right? Just thinking of getting to the jobs ads, maybe you’re looking at these qualifications and you might say to yourself, “Ah, I don’t have the two years of experience. Yes, and I have so much experience in X.” It’s just a way to remind yourself that – I dunno. It’s a way to be kind to yourself. That’s what I’ve learned, for sure.
Anna Marie Trester: I call job ads a wish list. That’s some committee’s wish list. That’s great. They can ask for their purple unicorn. That’s fine. This is the real world, and you’re gonna get somebody who’s gonna have 10%, 20%, 30% of what you’re asking for.
Megan Figueroa: I just helped a friend. I was like, “No. You need to apply for this. I don’t care that you think that you’re not – you really want it. Try.”
Anna Marie Trester: Absolutely. There’s often – I dunno if you’ve read the book, there’s a book written by Stanford Design School professors called Designing Your Life. They are kind of down on job applications. They say don’t even look at them. But I say do look at them because that’s enough to look at and see if there is a spark. If there is any interest, then go for it and use that to start a conversation, use that to launch in.
But the truth is, so few jobs actually – when you look at the hiring process – or [pɹoʊsɛs] – there’s such a misalignment. There’s so few job ads that actually correspond to the thing that gets hired. I look at their book to talk about the numbers. I’m not the most quantitatively oriented person. But it’s a lot. Know that if you find a slight interest, a slight alignment, apply, and it could well be that there’s another job or a different job or a new job that they see when they see your materials. They think, “Oh, we didn’t even know that we were looking for this person. Let’s create a job for them.”
Megan Figueroa: You have clients. Are your clients the companies that are looking for linguists?
Anna Marie Trester: Sometimes. It’s a new thing started last year where I have this organization that’s trying to – I would like for it to be both. But it has been, for many years, that I’ve been working with universities to help their students or individual jobseekers to help make their materials –
Megan Figueroa: So, someone could send you their materials and you’d be pointing out, “Why aren’t you talking about how great you are at this? Obviously, you have this skill.”
Anna Marie Trester: Yeah. I feel like I give – I hope I give – a different – I’m not your typical resume helper person. I’ll look at a cover letter and I’ll notice things like you are not shifting your dietic center the way that you should be. This is a classic thing. In cover letters, people write about why this will be a great job for me – this will be a wonderful opportunity for me. It’s understandable, right? You’re in your head and you’re thinking about “Wow, I speak French. This will be a great opportunity to practice my French.”
What you have to do in job materials or at large, but especially in a cover letter, you need to say, “You need someone who speaks French because think about how that’s gonna help you with this initiative that I see you talking about in the press.” That signals a lot of things. That signals that you’ve been reading about them, you’ve been thinking about them, and that you’re thinking about how your skills help them.
Megan Figueroa: Because they are their center, right? They’re thinking about them, so make sure you appeal to them.
Anna Marie Trester: Yeah.
Megan Figueroa You do work with the Linguistics Society of America?
Anna Marie Trester: For four years, and now I stepped down. Anastasia Nylund and I were the co-organizers of a special interest group for “Linguistics Beyond Academia.”
Megan Figueroa: Okay. That was you.
Anna Marie Trester: We restarted it. It had been started a long time ago. We sort of breathed new life into it in 2014. We carried the torch for four years. Now, we’ve passed it off to a team that has a ton of energy and they are just kicking butt. We just had the meeting – were you there?
Megan Figueroa: I wasn’t there, no. It was my first time. I haven’t been in a while. I had a little bit of fomo but – yeah.
Anna Marie Trester: I was telling Carrie, one of the top tweets for a long time about the conference at the #LSA2020, one of the top tweets from a presentation that one of our SIG members made to a department chair meeting where it was a list of dos and don’ts for when your students get a non-academic job. The big don’t was – and somebody took a picture of this. It was Lauren Collister, and her tweet blew up. It was, “Don’t say ‘We’ll miss you.’ Say, ‘How wonderful! You got a job that I hope you’ll come back and tell us about. Keep us connected to you. Keep coming back and telling our students.’” That’s an act of erasure that is probably not intended. How othering is that? That is so common.
Carrie Gillon: It happened to me after I decided, “You know what? Fuck this shit.” One of my Facebook friends, who I’d known since I was an undergrad, he was like, “Oh, we’ll miss you.” And I was like, a.) I still have stuff coming out. Still. I still do. And b.) what? We’re still connected on Facebook. We’re still gonna be –
Megan Figueroa: You’re not not a linguist anymore.
Carrie Gillon: Right. I’m still a linguist. I’m still doing stuff with language. I dunno. I was mad.
Megan Figueroa: As you should be, yeah. When I graduated, someone told me, “It’s a shame because you’re such a good researcher.” And I was like –
Carrie Gillon: Like you can’t do research anywhere else?
Megan Figueroa: I still am. I don’t have a tenure track job or I’m not a postdoc, but I’m still doing research. It was like, “Ugh. I know you mean so well.” I can tell that you think that’s a very – you’re speaking highly of me, and I get it, but it hurts. I’m glad that you brought that up because I just want to say to all of the undergrads and grad students listening that you don’t have to go into academia. If someone shames you for it, that’s some of their stuff going on.
Carrie Gillon: It’s part of the cult of academia, right?
Megan Figueroa: It is. Absolutely. I hope you have an advisor that is comfortable enough with whatever. I know the numbers look good when you have, “Oh, look. My student went to tenure track.” I know that’s what’s underpinning all of this, but it’s like, academia doesn’t look like it did 30 years ago. Not everyone wants to be a professor. All these things. It has to be okay.
Anna Marie Trester: I have to say it again, the world needs us. On this panel that we had at the LSA, we had an asylum officer talking about how his linguistics – of course, his linguistics skills come into play a thousand times a day as an asylum officer. The world has some wicked problems.
Carrie Gillon: I think lawyers should hire linguists on retainer because we can help you a lot.
Anna Marie Trester: Sometimes, I show up at a school and people are like, “I’m gonna get an academia job!” And I’m like, “Okay. Wonderful.” I’m not trying to take that away from anybody. I was scared too when I – so I started this job, I was one of those PhD students who was gonna get an academic job and I just knew it. I had magical thinking it was just gonna work out. When I was graduating, there was this program that was starting at Georgetown, and my advisor, Deborah Schiffrin – well, she was one of my committee members. She was not my advisor. Sorry, Natalie. Natalie was my advisor. Deborah Schiffrin was on my committee.
She advised me in that moment to apply for this job. She said, “This is why you’d be good at it.” Again, talking about how we don’t think about our own expertise. Before grad school, I had worked in an investment bank. I had some industry experience and I came to linguistics from that. Anyways, I was good at that job, but the whole time I was still applying for academic jobs, and I was gonna get an academic job, and I was convinced that was the path that I was on and, gradually, started to realize that –
Oh, now I remember what I was gonna say. The point I was gonna make was that Debbie Schiffrin, when she was getting me started with this job, she was like, “Okay. The first thing you’re gonna do is have 50 informational interviews.” And I was like, “What’s an informational interview? Huh?” I didn’t know. One of the reasons I wouldn’t have thought to apply for that job is I dunno how to help grad students figure out non-academic careers.
So, I just started – well, “Yes, and…” – having these informational interviews where I went and talked to alum and said, “What do you do? How does your linguistics come here?” One of the first ones I went to was an alum who worked at the Census Bureau. She’s like, “I have the best job, right? Of all the people that you’ve talked to, I have the best one, right?” And I was like, “You’re the first one. I don’t know! Maybe? You seem really happy.”
She was so happy with her job, and so in touch with how her work was really having real world – she had done research in Chinese – well, she was, herself, a speaker of Mandarin, I believe, and she was helping the Census Bureau think about, as they were bringing surveys to Chinese-speaking communities, there was a way that they were gonna need to restructure the letters so a, quote-unquote, “American style” – like a white, non-thinking-about-it style would be to say, “Please complete this survey because blah, blah, blah.”
But in the discourse style of Chinese-speaking communities, you needed to structure the request such that it said, “Background, background, background, background, background, build up to the request.” The survey, when it was restructured that way, was getting a much higher – people were actually responding and getting the data that the data that the Census Bureau needed.
Megan Figueroa: And she did that. She helped with that.
Anna Marie Trester: She did that.
Megan Figueroa: Awesome. Especially since it’s so fucking important – the census.
Anna Marie Trester: Yeah.
Megan Figueroa: That’s awesome.
Carrie Gillon: I’m looking forward to it coming. I like filling those things out.
Megan Figueroa: I know! I do too. I remember being 10 years old or, like, 13, and being like, “Can I fill it out, Dad? Can I be the one? Can I do it?” Such a nerd.
Anna Marie Trester: They have a bunch of linguists working there.
Megan Figueroa: That’s good. That’s awesome. Doesn’t every state have their own little census bureau too? I mean, I’m just thinking about all of – there’s so many places for linguists. It’s not just like there’s one centralized census bureau. Every state has something that’s working on these things and all of that. So many jobs.
You collect stories for your books?
Anna Marie Trester: It’s one of the things that I do, yeah.
Megan Figueroa: That’s the kind of stories that you’re collecting?
Anna Marie Trester: As a community, we need to hear more stories. I think through stories we learn about the different kinds of things that people can do with their skills and training in linguistics. That’s why I’m writing this book now, again, another one, because I felt like the last book I wrote didn’t have enough stories. It had, like, five, but now I wanna have 50 because I wanna tell a story of career diversity.
That’s one of the ways that – I have this approach where I think about story telling, story listening, and story finding. The story telling part of that work is just getting lots of stories out there. Then, I advocate for an approach that is more ongoing. It’s sort of like what I was talking about when I’m talking about that job at Earthjustice that I see having such potential. We could learn a lot from paying attention to the stories, listening to the stories that are being told in a job application, at the workplace. Adopting a story listening approach could be really informative about anything.
I always think about Charlotte Linde’s work when I think about story listening. She was hired for many years by NASA to – well, I always say she was chasing astronauts around, but I think that’s not exactly what she did all day. She could capture the stories of missions when they were being retired. It was one of the things that she did. They had her having her job responsibility, they called it “Knowledge Management.” But, as a linguist, she has expertise in what is the knowledge – the expert knowledge – that is contained in these stories that will not – they will not be codified when these people retire, or leave, or this mission gets retired.
Having someone who’s listening for a story and being very thoughtful about the knowledge and wisdom and institutional best practices that are contained in – so, again, everybody needs one of those linguists story listening at their organization.
Carrie Gillon: That’s amazing.
Megan Figueroa: Yeah. I wanna work for NASA!
Anna Marie Trester: I visited her one day and I was like, “Charlotte, you are doing nothing to dissuade me from saying you have the coolest job in the world” because she took me to the Mars model and we were chasing around –
Carrie Gillon: Oh, man! [Laughter] Dream job.
Megan Figueroa: I was gonna say, isn’t every little nerdy kid’s dream job NASA? You don’t even know what part of NASA. You’re just like – NASA!
Carrie Gillon: Well, when I first went to university, I went into engineering because I was like, “Star Trek. Yeah. I’m gonna build shuttles.” Then, I was like, “Nope. Hate this.” But if linguistics could’ve gotten me there – oh, man!
Megan Figueroa: Yeah! You’d want her job the whole time.
Anna Marie Trester: Linguistics got Charlotte Linde to NASA twice. Twice! You’ll have to read her story in my book to learn how. In the book, I’m telling stories about how people use their linguistics as a Mom, or how people use their linguistics in bystander activism. It’s not just at work. But, for many of us, work is gonna be the way that we bring – I grew up in a family that doesn’t have a ton of money, so my job was gonna be how I travelled. It was gonna be how I got to try on different worlds and explore. Career has been a major way that I have expressed my sense of contributing to the world.
For many of us, it is that too. It is not just our livelihood – but it is also our livelihood – but if you’re trying to use your career to express meaning and purpose and find that broader “What do I wanna give to the world?” it’s gonna be more bottom up, I think. It’s both. It’s top down and bottom up.
Carrie Gillon: That, I think, is particularly for people who went into academia. That’s really important for us is that we wanna be doing meaningful work.
Anna Marie Trester: One of my favorite networking groups – I participate in this group here in the Bay Area called “Ethnobreakfast.” A lot of them are –
Megan Figueroa: That’s just nerdy.
Anna Marie Trester: It’s so nerdy. All right. Professors who are listening, do this. This was a professor of anthropology. She has kept such a tight, close community of her grads that, every month, one of them invites a group of nerds into their workplace. We all trudge out to Facebook or to Workday, and we sit for an hour. We read – well, whatever the host gets to decide what we’re gonna read. We all read something. Then, we talk about some theoretical thing or.
They get to invite their colleagues who get to learn a little bit more about “I always knew that you had this anthropology or ethnography or linguistic interest, but I didn’t know how you used it or how it came” – they get to learn about us. We get to learn about them. I think this should be happening everywhere.
Carrie Gillon: That sounds amazing.
Anna Marie Trester: It’s breakfast, so it is early in the morning. But it doesn’t cut into anybody’s workday. We have it from 8:30 to 9:30 on a Friday which, let’s be honest, who can start to work at 9:00 a.m. on a Friday anyway? We all bring – it’s a potlatch. It doesn’t cost anyone anything. Those are the conversations that we need to be – okay. So, story finding. Talk about a little cue that I left for a long time. That’s what I think of when I think of story finding. Let’s look for places where conversations could be happening but aren’t and let’s build spaces for them.
Megan Figueroa: I would totally go to that breakfast.
Carrie Gillon: Me too.
Anna Marie Trester: It’s the best. Make one! So many alum from U of A are doing so many interesting things. For the record, I think that that’s what your podcast is also – a story finding thing. You’re out there making space for conversations that should be happening, but they haven’t been.
Carrie Gillon: I agree. It’s also story telling by letting the rest of the world who are not linguists know that, hey, these are things to think about. We should think about that more carefully than we have, but absolutely.
Anna Marie Trester: It seems like what we’re talking about are these tiny little interactions. I was inspired – I was telling Carrie – by Anne Charity Hudley’s amazing plenary at the LSA. She was sharing this model, and this is a social activism model, where it’s tiny little changes, when they are amplified a hundred-fold and consistently reinforced, that’s a movement. I think we’re engaged in a movement. It’s gonna be tiny little things, but they are happening all over the place. When you hear those little moments, or those little moments where you caught yourself being an asshole or –
Carrie Gillon: Which we all do.
Anna Marie Trester: Try to adopt that mindset of like, “Here’s a moment. Here’s a tiny moment.” We can be easy about it, and we can admit that we make mistakes and learn – after Anne’s plenary, I went up and tried to say this, so I’ll say what I sort of said that we all have to adopt a learning mindset. It's so powerful.
We’re bringing these messages to people with power so, especially people with power out there, remember, when you have power, it is especially important that you adopt this learning mindset and remember that it feels – I think sometimes people with power, it feels very dangerous to let go of any of that power or to admit that you could make a mistake.
Megan Figueroa: That’s why I was afraid of this podcast. I mean, this is my little bit of power, right, too, where I was like, “What if I say something wrong?”
Carrie Gillon: A.) we can edit.
Megan Figueroa: It was very scary.
Carrie Gillon: B.) we can learn!
Megan Figueroa: Yes. The learning part has been very – I thought it would be scary, but it’s actually very freeing.
Anna Marie Trester: It’s like this for me. It’s human.
Megan Figueroa: It is, yeah. Absolutely.
Anna Marie Trester: I remember K-Cat – Kathryn Campbell-Kibler – at a session at LSA a couple years ago where she invited us to come practice in the lobby. They had a panel on ethics. Then, she was like, “Meet me in the lobby.” And I was like, “Oh my god! I’ll be there.” I was there early. “Let’s practice having these conversations.” It was just – let’s practice having these conversations where we just say, “Huh. That wasn’t great” or “We can do better,” however we learn how to say these things.
Megan Figueroa: Absolutely. I think that all boils down to, don’t be an asshole, right?
Anna Marie Trester: It is absolutely how you do, don’t be an asshole. That’s how we all make sure that happens. We’re all responsible for it. Yeah!
Carrie Gillon: Acknowledging that you made a mistake is Step 1, and it’s good to acknowledge.
Anna Marie Trester: What a life-affirming conversation.
Carrie Gillon: I know! This has been great.
Anna Marie Trester: Go be awesome.
Megan Figueroa: I’m gonna cancel therapy on Tuesday.
Anna Marie Trester: Go share your power with the world.
Megan Figueroa: Yes. Go be empowered, for sure. Thank you so much for being our guest today.
Anna Marie Trester: Thank you guys.
Carrie Gillon: It was so great.
Megan Figueroa: It’s been so lovely.
Carrie Gillon: Yeah. Don’t be an asshole.
Megan Figueroa: Don’t be an Asshole.
Anna Marie Trester: Yes, and…

“Five Feet Apart” Review (spoilers)
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott, Mikki Daughtry, and Tobias Iaconis is the book adaptation of the movie dealing with three kids with cystic fibrosis. The two main characters that we read about in their point of view are Stella and Will. Stella’s friend, Poe, is there too. The whole book is romanticized for young teenage viewers and brings absolute trash awareness for the CF community. Let me explain why.
I out of my own curiosity wanted to read the book because it’s actually based on the movie! Alright, cool, that’s not bad but normally I’m a, “I wanna read the book before I see the movie to see how accurate it is”, but now this is a bigger problem: it’s based on the movie. Anyway, moving on.
I can’t do anything with my copy besides let it collect dust because I’ve written corrections in it along with my opinions. I cannot stand that this is the way the CF community is going to be remembered by. But as my best friend told me, I shouldn’t have to worry about what people think; leave them to their ignorance. Since she knows me, she knows how cystic fibrosis has affected my life and mentality and she’s not going to be fooled.
Below are going to be some quotes or references to the book that I reacted to.
242-250: B. cepacia mouth to mouth (spoiler)
So I get it, he had to save her life but he could have continued with the chest compressions and making sure he lifed her head up to clear her airways. However, since Stella was choking on water, he could have done the Heimlich maneuver and still would have been able to get her to cough/throw up the water. To my knowledge this makes sence.
Will breathed directly into her mouth. If being around him with masks wasn’t enough for her to catch B. cepacia, this should be the winning ticket. It’s direct contact! The simple fact that she got the new lungs that fast and is still a canidate for them is mind boggling because if it were me, I would have been tested to see if I had it and then get the lung transplant.
236: “He looks into my eyes, his voice serious. ‘You make me want a life I can’t have.’ I know exactly what he means, he shakes his head, his face somber. ‘That’s the scariest thing I've ever felt.’” -Will, from Stella’s perspective.
Yes, but did Will ever think about the fact he could have a life with her that’s not romantic? Couldn’t she have inspired him to live and make better of himself that way he could have? Because I know when my two friends died, it made me more aware of my care but now, I’m more aware of how I’ve neglected my medication and how I can reverse it. It’s more dedication but if you have others supporting you, the weight is shifted.
Although, I understand. I’ve meet people who I wish I could have had more time with them. I know friends that would love to meet up but because of distance, we’re forced to know the pain of not being able to be next to each other. The scariest part for me is who’s going to tell them that I died, when I do. How are they going to find out: when I don’t answer their calls or texts, or when they’re scrolling through social media? I don’t know which one hurts more because I’ve experienced both.
165: “I am afraid,” he admits, meeting my eyes. “You know what someone gets for loving me? They get to help me pay for all my care, and then they watch me die. How is that fair to anyone?” - Will
I for one can say that I agree. I’m the one who still apologizes about coughing around my close friends, hide in my seat in lecture halls and lower my head in public. The worst one? Me apologizing to my best friend and sister for if I were to cough in my sleep. THEN they both look and squint their eyes at me saying, “I don’t hear you in my sleep! I tune out your cough unless it sounds like you’re dying/ I’m deaf, I can’t hear you cough anyway!”
But it’s not fair for anyone involved in this process. I’ve learned that if anyone wants to help or contribute to you, just let them. If someone loves you, they’re going to pick up the other side of the world and help you make it go round while not making you feel like you’re a burden. I’m not obligated to take care of myself but it would certainly help in the long hall; just as my best friend (sorry, Jasmine, you’re being put on spot but for good reason, has no obligation to care or to help, she does so because she cares and wants to see me be happy and healthy. (That time we went to a concert and even though we were both beyond tired, she reminded me to take my medication and stood up while I did it. That’s unconditional support).
Now, I can’t reference this page but it’s when Poe is suffering from a collapsed lung and dies right after.
I can’t recall dying right away. The book never specifies if he’s continuously coughing so I’m going to say this was a reason to him being admitted. But when my lungs collapsed, I was sick for a week. I didn’t think anything of it. Until one day, I was coughing more than my sick cough and I couldn’t swallow anything, I was gasping for air through coughing. It’s when I got to the ER that I was coughing up blood and found out that I had a collapsed lung.
Besides, what hospital lets their patients run freely without checking up on them or having a tracker on them? That and lets them take their medication freely on their made schedule without supervision AND keeps it open in their room????
This post was supposed to be made a while ago but Gunnar Esiason retweeted my tweets with input and inspired me to continue to expand my opinions. Thank you, Gunnar.

#2 journey in tumblr.
typing this on 10.25 p.m. with my eyes gotta fall asleep as soon as possible.
i must remember that i have my vow to write down my daily activities in this medium.
i opened my day as usual, wake up lately at 7 a.m, and fell asleep again until 8 a.m. idk since when this keep be my one of bad habits.
i've ever heard about quote, said we should, at least, reduce the bad habit you did yesterday for your tomorrow. i always regeret it, but effortlessly, it repeated, become my regular routine. can this bad behaviour stop and get out from my life forever?
ow, three of sentence above were begun by letter "i" 🤣
because of one mistake i made in the morning, all of activities surely moved on the wrong time. finally i can finish the house chore on 10 a.m, and be well prepared on 11 a.m. actually i have an appointment with Dhila to help her with her research, but yeah fortunately, even i came late, there was no laboratory asisstant to keep the lab, so we delay the activities by did my organization stuff. i forget what i've done at that time. dhila gave me vanilla milk, yummy! thanks a lot <3
finally, at 1 p.m, we measure some medium chemical components on the chemical stocks room. there was a pregant cat sneaked into the room. i was worried about the cat, because the room contains and smelled chemical components that may causing a trouble to exhale-inhale process (im very very forget about the english of this activity). fortunately the cat comfortly lied on my thigh.
the measuring take times for 1 hour. so many components were measured. i hope dhila can well overcome her research, and hope Allah give my friends who still do research, Dhila and Dwi, easiness and blessings.
i planned to give lecture for my private students in kakap. but when i arrived to their house, the neighbour said they just go together with car. so i decided to comeback home safely alhamdulillah.
time to go home. this place gives me mixed feelings. here i feel comfort, here i feel energized, here i feel miserable, here i feel more productive, and here too i feel more lazy.
why the 'lazy' things happen, even in my home? is it because everything are easy to access? um, no, i have trouble in my internet access, esp on my laptop. what else? or.. maybe this place is my safe zone, so i can effortlessly accessed the unporductive stuff, handphone is the main villain, so do the laptops with no limited access for any websites. omg, do my future has at least chance to be better? yes of course!
yesterday, after i write my first blog, i printed words that groupped the sticky notes in front of my office desk to be more organized. omg that office lol. today i feel the phsycological effect after applied that method. i can feel triggered to do the "to do list" and "delayed" section. wow, can someone described this effect in phsycological way? i wanna know badly. yet i still cant overcome the "time table" section. is the writings too little, make me cant focus on it? yeah it can be the one of reason too. i will change the concept.
okay, i gotta back to my todays stuffs. i got my ordered book by Quranreview, there are Tadabbur Quran and Daily journal. but surprisingly i got the Daily journal twice, first i got it yesterday, and today i got it again chuakss. soo, i asked the admin of the sender, and i was asked to give it back lol. fortunately, they asked me to pay it with cod, saving my costs haha.
night begin. i opened my twitter. i found one of my following tweets, he shared some blogs on Medium, about self development. His words are beautifully said and well understood. even it is all in english. in his first blog, it's about use your 1 hour-3 hours a day wisely for achieving or learning something new. we are human beings are given the same amount of time, 24 hours. 16 hours we spent for 8-hours sleep, and 8-hour work. and the remaining time usually we use it for doing unproductive activities such as scrolling through tiktok (i've deleted it due to randomized algorithm that harms my precious time😪), instagram (this apps drags me into love-hate relationship, sometimes it can be act as tiktok-ends with uninstall it, but here i can share something useful with picture in it, as you know, me being as visual learner likes it soo much), twitter (alhamdulillah i am born to be bored of something that cant give me feedback, twitter nowadays just shows me about "is it true" and some validations of everyone, i cant hold it, so i rarely opens it recently), and any social media. in my cases, whats wrong about my life? i think it's more caused by binge watching for korean dramas. i cant hold it huhu. it is very dangerous poison man.
never get a sip if you dont want your precious time will be robbed by that korean drama things😭
this will be remembred because you know, i have spent my 3 days for finishing 24 eps of a korean drama😫. i regreted it so much yet i cant take my eyes off from it... yeah... i said it before
korean drama is poison ☠
even i know that, i still watch it today. i watched eulachacha waikiki 2. but fortunately (count this words on this blog plis) i got my sanity back haha. thanks to my new invention in front of my office desk lololol, i can spit out the poison jajajaja.
is it the blog going to the end? no.
i have one regretful things today.
it is.... related to the third blog of the writer that i talked above. his name is Briandito Priambodo (https://medium.com/the-tiny-wisdom). it is about "why i didnt do it earlier?".
one of the reasons, why we cant do the good things routinely is because we expect the journey has to be perfect, so we prepared it perfectly. do you know the results being perfect on preparing? i've felt that. one day full i design the perfectly journal structure, and it ended with nothing to write, even one word. and i decided to stated that..
being perfectionist for me is a poisonous way to start the change ☠
bruh, i want to post the example of ✨perfect✨ journaling structure that i compile from some vlogger. but sorry i type this on laptop so it'd hard to post. ehe.
yo. it's 11.55. i take too much time on typing this. means that i have interest on writing, isn't it? 😂😂

The Worst RPer I have ever met (Nemo Saga Chapter 3)
Okay, so let’s talk about the first worst RP and my worst Idea first. The Spooky RP.
This idea should be on the list of unlikely and terrible crossover ideas ever. Simply imagine Spooky’s House of Jumpscares except no 1000 rooms, the layout is more akin to the Arklay Mansion and the spooky monsters that hunt you down are replaced with the Zeds from Killing Floor 2. This was during a time in my life where I had worse ideas in mind, and while I am not fully better, I’m slowly improving the ideas and concepts of something else before I end up doing the mistake of writting the “Life is Eldritch” Fanfiction... ANYWAY!
The Plot of this RP I told to Nemo was that my Characters had taken over a small abandoned mansion and turned into an a haunted house attraction where an AI would sorta pick what monster comes out while a female character named Kate decides to do the voices to do some kind of a twisted warning about it. I told it to Nemo and he accepted it. Only because it had spooky and he was a big fan of Markiplier. And don’t worry, Markiplier doesn’t make a cameo.
Anyway, we begin this RP tale in October 30th, where the next day would soon be Velora’s Birthday (yi-fucking-pey). After some random bullshit where some dude through coffee on Velora’s Face for no reason, Everyone goes to the Mansion near the Villa.
Short Explanation: The Villa is a small abandoned “Town” that was half finished and forgotten by the government. The few buildings finished are just the town plaza and the Mansion own by a man who’s name is forgotten. The mansion is the setting for this RP.
Anyway, they go in, dressed as a bunch of Emo’s and are told the rules. Nemo thought he was being sneaky when he and his mommy sues brought guns but I counter acted this by telling them that the monsters were incapable of harming them and in having a gun, they deprive themselves of the horror of a Haunted Mansion.
But then fucking suddenly, Anathalia’s Archnemesis, Adelie (Brothel Owner lady), shows up and takes Anathalia. But Nemo then handcuffs her and the police take her away.
This won’t be the last time this shit happens.
Within minutes we show them the mansion and how it works. While he was trying to push me into having Exposition dumped into my face, I tried to introduce the RP’s Main threat, the Spooky Hologram (I’ll explain what the fuck I was trying to do at the end of the story, because explaining everything here is confusing.) Needless to say, I forgot to mention to Nemo that this RP, while taking the title of Spooky, was a complete diversion from the games but he is still convincing himself he played through this game and it’s nothing.
So the objective of this haunted mansion thing was to have people choose a direction and try to go through with it. Think of it like an escape room, except you’re trying to escape the house from mutants who can’t fully hurt you but can give you one hell of scare with their wails and hissing. Nemo and Velora chose the Basement while Anathalia chose the Second Floor. And then the games started.
Then fucking suddenly, Adelie shows up (No details about how the fuck she escaped) and asks around for Anathalia to bring her back the brothel (Because kidnapping a “famous celebrity”, and doing so is more trouble than it’s worth!) and Nemo decided to have Kate (The person that we both created and the voice of the Spooky Hologram) go and try to defend Anathalia. It was there where Anathalia decided to choose Kate as another candidate, but Aiden and Ruby (Aiden being a sort of avatar of mine and Ruby being an obvious nod to an artist I like and a Female Dragon) tried to defuse the situation but Nemo comes and tries to stop the situation by threatening Adelie with a gun (Yeah, dipshit ignored da rules of the mansion and somehow had another gun.) But before anything could go any further, The cops show up and she is taken to a jail in paris yet again. Making this whole conflict pointlessly unnecessary.
Meanwhile, Nemo and his mommy sues returned to the Maze and he keeps brushing off minor things that aren’t being part of the game as part of the game. I know it’s a sort of method for us to calm the fuck down but he was so smug about how the “escape mansion” was just like the Spooky game. Until he reached the laboratory, where the Killing Floor Zeds were being stored and manufactured. He at first brushed it off, until the lights of the lab came on and he saw them all, these hideous freaks all moving around in their cages, waiting for an opportunity to tear into him like a lion on a gazelle.
He still continued to brush it off, but it was there where the Hologram made it clear that No one in the control room is doing this, it is now running the show and will now unleash these freaks for its own amusement. But leave it to Nemo to try and deflate the scary moment by adding in fucking “bachata” music (Bachata being a sort social dance music for us latinos). I wanted to go with a sort of dark like tone and he just adds unnecessary BS like this and just ruins it.
It is after that the spooky AI was going to decide to unleash the monsters on them and he would have to escape the mansion with his life.
Big. Fucking. NOPE
He teleports away to safety, ruining the conflict so bad that I argued for a re-do because it was that insulting. I know It sounds annoying but jesus christ! I shouldn’t have done this because all I did was prolong the agony further.
Anyway, It was there where Spooky had tried to force Nemo and his Mary Sues to pick a path and stick to it. His mary sues had the attention span of toddlers because they ignore everything she says, asks her about what is it like being a ghost (Despite the fact I told him in the beginning it was a Hologram.) and then I decided to pull a Deus Ex Machina out of my Ass and just have her ZAP away their powers. Nemo’s Response?
Nemo(From the Archived RP I had): Did you know you can't do that to me, right? I'm different.
Ofcourse he doesn’t want to play fair. Ofcourse, OFCOURSE! He has to act like he’s such a SPECIAL AND UNIQUE Snow flake. I was so sickened by this that instead of teleporting away, he just rushed the scary moments of being chased by the Zeds and then he escaped to the control room. Where the dipshit begins to change the subject to an unimportant side plot about how Adelie found Anathalia. I won’t explain the details, but it had something to do with a Hot Topic employee being a spy for Adelie and such bullshit.
I broke character as Aiden, so tired of this inane bullshit, decides to grab a rifle, arm Eddie and an unpaid janitor, to go down the basement and take care of the monsters before they get out and then, just because I realized how much of a fucking mistake both the RP and the attraction was, I would burn down the mansion. Nemo gets offended that we were going to destroy the mansion and tells us to leave. So we do, and Nemo then decides that the next logical solution is to MURDER MY FUCKING CHARACTER and throw his body out of the rooftop of the mansion, ignoring all the other characters trying to kill him.
But it’s okay gais! Because it turns out it was a Demon call Jack, Who was making him do the bad thing and Nemo has the most anti-climatic battle. I wanna take this moment to take another quote from the RP. Because I never noticed it and now that I do, I find it so hilarious
His friends like Ruby, Anathalia and Kate are in shock. What will they do without (Nemo)? They'll never know.
Well, I can tell you one thing. Ruby would not miss someone who just happened to have Killed their friend in cold blood when there was never a sign of this possesion to begin with!
So after an anticlimatic battle that could fit in the confines of a tweet, Nemo defeats the Demon and the day was saved. And he swept away all the problems by reviving my character and had all of my characters go “Oh, It wasn’t Nemo, it was a demon! He was the good guy all along.” And then there was a party.
Aiden, Despite being revived by his “Saviour” has not forgotten his goal. So I told everyone to get ready for a big firework display. And everyone gave their stupid recommendations.
At first the house had a minor explosion, before the memories of that shitty night were erased in a massive ball of fire. Bringing a huge smile on my face and an angry Nemo on my character’s face. He got into some whiny bullshit about how he would buy the land and rebuild it for the Vampire Clan or some Bullshit, and since the Vampire Clan was so Big and Important to the government, I took it a step further by lighting the flag on fire and telling him “I’ll call you for a war declaration later.” He repeats how I’m offending the vampire overlords but I told him I never gave a fuck. And he just flipped my character off.
and that was the worst RP I have ever had with Nemo, and it sure as Shit would not be the last.
And now... A brief explanation on what in the actual fuck was the POINT of the Spooky RP:
The idea for the Spooky RP was inspired by my experience playing KF2 on a free weekend on Steam while also learning about Spooky’s House Of Jumpscares. So I had a thought: Why not have an RP where there is a sort of Spooky Esque character trying to narrate your “demise” while also being chased by zeds. Although not mentioned in the RP, the origins of the Zeds come from the Mansions “Laboratory” level below the Basement, and when Aiden and Eddie first found it, they were stuck down the for a day until they shredded their way out. It was there where Aiden had the bright idea of creating the escape mansion to make a quick buck. But since they can’t just go and kill them, the characters decide that the best course of action is to lead the zeds out of the basement, trap it and try to declaw or detooth them, due to how dangerous those parts can be. As the mansion was built and the AI was already created, the AI went through an “Ultron Phase” as I like to call it, looking through video footage of the somehow working cameras of the mansion and seeing both Eddie and Aiden harming this creatures for entertainment purposes. So it plotted their demise and its plan to release the creatures out into the streets of Puerto Rico just for giggles. How the “Spooky AI” spoke was by replicating a lot of Kates Vocals and then mimicking it in a same pitch and everything. Yeah, it doesn’t make a lot of sense but I tried to atleast come up with a good idea before it got ruined horribly.
I should’ve quit after the SteamPunk disaster but I guess I’m responsible for my own demise when it comes to bad RPs. And like a masochist, I just kept coming for more.

Fan Wars:  A New Hope.  Damnit.
Tumblr media
I sure do hope you like reading lots of words!!
Here's the remix (Edited.  Longer.  Angrier.  Yay!):  I’m about to get all fire and brimstone up in here.  I apologize in advance.
Regarding my blog post re:  The Joke Debacle, most everyone has been so thoughtful, mature, kind and open minded about the discussion matter, even if they didn’t necessarily agree with me.  So that right there, shows me that it’s possible for all of us to be more understanding with each other regardless of our ships or faves or whatever.  And I’m an open-minded, open book, so even if you don’t agree with me, this is a safe place to vent concerns or frustrations with what I say.  We can all respectfully disagree, meet in the middle or go just back to our own corners.  Whatever.
I'd like to encourage those of you who are taking your frustrations out on anyone who agrees with points made in my article (on Twitter or wherever) to come speak directly to me if you have an issue. I wrote it, after all.  My blog is helpfully linked right there in the article.  I don't bite. And for those of you who aren't overly familiar with what's going on, please check out the many, many comments attached to my actual blog post, and you will be able to see that there are far more people that are fed up with these bad apples, than there are bad apples.  I hope.  And if there are apples that don’t feel like they’re being given a fair shake, I’d like to hear from those apples too.
When I posted my angry rant last week, I didn’t expect it to gain so much traction.  But it did…and it showed me I wasn’t alone, and that there are a lot of fed up fans out there, and justifiably so, who are looking for an end to this ridiculous inner-fandom civil war.  I'm relatively new to Tumblr. I wasn't expecting to become the unofficial mouthpiece for this issue.
I was approached by movietvtechgeeks.com asking if they could use my blog post in an article about the cyberbullying that’s happening in this fandom, so I said “Sure!”  I’m honored that someone would want to print my rambling.  But of course, it’s also opened up the floor on Twitter, yet again, for certain people to deliberately misconstrue the content and twist it to suit their own agenda in the comment sections.  What they fail to realize is…they’re only proving why we needed this article in the first place.  So, joke’s on them!!  However…. now I feel obligated to come on here and clarify my intent and that’s friggin irritating.
Here is the article if you want to take a looksee:  https://twitter.com/movietvtechgeek/status/927578926397952000
I NEED TO MAKE A FEW THINGS CRYSTAL CLEAR (apparently):
1.  I don’t have a ship.  I don’t dislike shippers.  (Ship away!  I just dislike pushy people with no sense of boundaries)  So please do not misconstrue anything I say as promoting or denigrating *a* ship. You do you.  Let me do me.  Well, that sounded vaguely dirty… you know what I mean.  I’m just gonna ship me with myself now.  Nobody can love me quite like me.
2.  I don’t stan an actor, and I don’t think that because someone likes “another” actor (whomever that might be) more, that it’s a direct affront to me or them.  I tag all these "relevant to the post” actors because I think they’re all relevant to the success of this show, and sadly….also to this juvenile ridiculousness that seems to be brewing between fan factions.
But, if I’m being honest?  Full disclosure:  I do have a favorite!  Jensen. Heyyyoooo!  I think he’s an incredibly talented actor IN MY OPINION, and I like his extraordinarily expressive face. See?  Simple as that.  Is that a problem?  And do you feel better now that it’s out in the open?
We can all have opinions, and favorites without “throwing feces like howler monkeys” to quote a certain dickhead angel.  And as far as personalities and talent go?  They’re all amazing, and they all belong, IN MY OPINION.  The main cast, the supporting cast, new castmates, former castmates…. they all just…gel.  You know?  It’s some kind of voodoo magic.  And they’re by all accounts, really decent people doing good things out there in the world.  Without any one of them, it wouldn’t be the show we all know and love.  And if you don’t love the SHOW, well….I guess fucking go watch something else?  Right??
Listen....Unless you’re tied to a chair Clockwork Orange-style, and being force fed this show by some evil, covert government agency… you DO have other choices.
3.  I sucked it up and joined Twitter because there seems to be an attack dog, hive-mind situation happening that seems hell bent on cowing people into submission.  That shit doesn’t fly with me.  And if I’m on there and see bullying, damaging misinformation or harassment… I’m going to get in the fray.  But I’m going to TRY to do it with honesty, integrity and a sense of humor.  I want to sit at the adults table on Turkey Day.  Not at the kids table with Weird Uncle Augustus.  Know what I mean?  Don’t be that guy.
AND ONCE MORE FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK:   To be clear - I’m not speaking to ONE specific group of people.  However, if you look into the mirror I’m holding up and see your own reflection?  I’m probably talking to you.
4.  I’m not going to choose a “side”.  I choose the show, it’s actors, crew, writers, etc, collectively.   Because they all work their asses off, both on and off the set to give us fans so much more than just entertainment.
5.  If someone wanted to hold a mirror up to this fandom right now, via a juicy documentary on the ship wars, fighting factions, undermining, conspiracy theories, revenge tactics, harassment campaigns, etc…. I think its safe to say, we’re all gonna be pretty fucking embarrassed.  Let’s hope that never happens.  I’m cringing just thinking about it.  But we deserve it, if we keep on with this petty bullshit, ya know? 6.  My blog post was not about for J2 "stans” or about Misha “stans”, for gods sake people. This post was about how splinter groups (for lack of a better term) were being damaging and disruptive (As they do.) and how it’s bad for EVERYONE when we let warring factions steamroll over everyone else, AND each other. This post was a direct response to the organized and brutally efficient Twitter campaign that somehow found its way into the laps of a handful of online news sites in an effort to publicize an off-color joke in order to take advantage of the current climate in the entertainment industry and start a viral witch hunt.  *I just ran out of breath.  Time for a James Brown pause*
Tumblr media
7.  My post was also aimed at the Twitter spamming campaigns that Shatner and Pellegrino, as well as J2 had to put up with in the past few weeks.  And don't feed us that horsehit about them bullying the poor fans that spoke their minds. NO.  You collectively went on, and started shit, kept coming at them, and they defended themselves.  And rather maturely, considering.  It’s about groups of people that have gotten so wrapped up and out of control, that they’re poisoning this fan family.  I genuinely feel concerned that some folks are confusing reality with fiction, here.
8.  If you look back farther on my Tumblr page (?) to the good ol days of last Thursday (?) - particularly the Silent Majority post - that post is not in reference to any fan or any actor, specifically.  It’s in reference to the majority of fans who want to do the right thing, WANT to help out, WANT to just enjoy the damn show without all this drama and hate.  But because they’re quiet, and they’re not able to speak their minds without fear of retribution…. they’re vastly under-represented.  And so, the assholes of the fandom run amok unchallenged. THAT’S the majority I’m speaking of.   9.  I abhor anyone that lurks around on social media looking for people to mess with. So, imagine my surprise and disappointment that now I’M that person, because of this fucking shit!!  I’m only getting after people who are picking on others, but still… lurking, arguing.  Utter waste of valuable time.  Yours and mine.
Saturday night I apparently pissed off the leader of one of the SPN gangs (what do you call them??)  when I called her out on her behavior and was ominously told:  “Wanna see what happens when I tell my followers what to think and do”.  To which I responded “I already have.  And it’s deplorable”  And then offered to provide her with my name, # and home address.  She didn’t want it.  I don’t know why.  I thought it was funny!  I NEVER get hate mail... and I was looking forward to some postcards.  I’m old school that way.  Don’t hate tweet me.  Send me a hate postcard featuring something cool from your state.
Jokes aside....that’s the kind of crap that mobilized me in the first place.
I tried to have a reasonable conversation with this individual and even asked if she wanted to take it offline and talk.  I followed her lead, conversationally, did snark back when required...but just when I thought we were going to have a reasonable discussion, she pulled the rug out.  I tried.  If you’re reading this and you feel misrepresented, or misunderstood, or you’re trying to misrepresent our conversation - the door is still open if you want to talk.  But I’m not going to tolerate your bullshit, and neither should anyone else.
Who ARE these people?  And why is this happening?  That’s my question.
10.  I'm not here to listen to arguments that a 6-year old might find compelling in a court of law, such as:  Well, Jensen told that joke a year ago, or Misha said thisthatandtheotherthing back in the day...so why are you only talking about Jareds joke?
Well...because this is not a tit-for-tat thing.  I'm talking about the issue that is relevant RIGHT NOW.  And this is far from a "blame it on Jared" thing.  I feel awful for the guy.  For both of them for even being looped into this insanity.  The intent of my blog post was to address very current events that have been demonstrative of the current, toxic climate brewing in the SPN fandom.  I’m NOT here to write the Unabridged History of SPN Actors and Their Fondness for Off-Color Jokes.
11.  If you're all wound up and offended by what I wrote?  It's probably because I wrote this blog post not for you, but about you.  OR, you've not been provided with context, content or clarity, and you got swept up in this manufactured hysteria and reacted.  OR, you think I’m a total asshole, and that’s ok.  I get it!  And I understand how my post could make some of you defensive and prickly.  But hey, as the saying goes... don't start none, won't BE none.  On the flip side, as someone eloquently stated (ahem, CarolHansson) "It's ok to be offended....it's also ok to not be offended"
12.  I am not a rape apologist.  And neither are the actors.  And to even insinuate that any of us, by extension of supporting Jared or Jensen in this situation, are pro "rape culture", is appropriating a term and using it so irresponsibly that you're negating the real suffering of sexual abuse survivors.  The more you trivialize it, the more you take away its power. Stop using manufactured concern for survivors as your jumping-off point for harassment, and START asking yourself what's really motivating you to use that argument as an excuse for your behavior. BTW,  #Metoo, and you sure as hell don't represent ME.
If you want to see a record of this casts achievements for mental health awareness, LGBTQ rights, anti-bullying and womens issues, to name a few - it's a simple Google search away.  That's on your time.  Not mine.  Again....not here to write their autobiography.  This piece is an opinion piece.  I try to be balanced, but that’s as far as it goes.  I'm not CNN.
13.  MISHA:  Misha was not mentioned in my post because Misha was not under fire last week or the week before over this stupid bullshit.  If I SEE that happening, I’ll write about THAT.  But HE was not the focus of this mess.  So I left HIM out of it.  Does that make sense?  And also?  I'm not here to equally represent all actors at all times.  That's not how this works in the context of the subject matter at hand.  If you want to see more adequate representation for your favorite actor  - write your own op ed. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
And Misha as well as J2, are probably more than a little appalled that some of their biggest fans (?) are committing to some shady behavior in their honor and in their names.  Just a guess.  They’re good guys and this is probably not sanctioned behavior.  If you think it is?  Show me the receipts.  Let’s do this honestly, using facts.  Not conjecture.
14.  No, I do not excuse anyone's behavior because of their physical attractiveness.  Neither do most people.  I am not a child (Thank you, Uma Thurman), and I don't rationalize like a child.
15.  No, I am not doing this to seek approval from the actors, and neither is anyone else with the #istandwithJ2 hashtag.  As previously stated, this is an equal and opposite reaction to the bullshit that brought us all here today.  You’re grasping at straws at this point, if that’s the argument you’re going with.  Speaking on my own behalf, I have nothing to gain here, except some new Tumblr friends with a side of troll.
16.  To reiterate on previous posts - I’m hoping that all of us will collectively start sticking up for each other when we see someone harassing a fellow fan online. Even if you don’t want to comment….maybe give the person being flamed those little heart thingys (likes?).  Direct message them if liking their post doesn’t feel safe.  Show them your support in some way, so that they don’t feel alone and so that they don’t feel quite so vulnerable to attacks from online bullies.   We Have Got To Start Backing Up People who are just trying to express their opinions respectfully and are being slammed with responses that are belligerent, demeaning, threatening, obnoxious, etc.  Otherwise - these jerks will just keep steamrolling right over the more gentle viewers out there.  And a lot of them, are just kids.  And this goes both ways.  It has to, in order to be effective.
If you see something - say something.  That’s my 2 cents anyway.
The world’s going to Hell in a handbasket, 26 innocent people were gunned down yesterday in a place they held sacred and felt safe in, and it just keeps happening.
Mother Nature has decided she’s sick of our shit and has been upending thousands of lives.  There are actual sexual predators in some of our pasts and sadly, in some of our futures.  And this “joke” has no relevancy or bearing on that sad fact.
Women, people of color, LGBTQ people, economically fragile people, physically fragile people, etc...are seeing their protections, rights and livelihoods eroded away in an alarmingly short period of time, and the list goes on and on… and THIS is what we’re dedicating our mental and emotional resources to?
This show is supposed to be an escape from reality, guys.  Not actual reality.
Why are we harassing the actors and fellow fans of a television show that brought us all together in the first place?  This is entertainment, people.  I know how important this show is to all of us.  And I know how impactful the message of this show has been.  And I know that without this show, some of us might not be here today.  We are some passionate sumbitches.  I GET THAT.
The question still remains.... what in the actual fuck are we really fighting for and about, here?  If someone can quantify and explain that to me in a way that makes sense, I’m all ears.
Has it really come to:  “Maybe we need to devise a more sophisticated tagging situation so that people don’t keep dipping their chocolate in other peoples peanut butter.”  I don’t know.  But this is Nth level ridiculousness, and we need to figure it out before it gets even worse.
For now, I’m going to get back to enjoying this show for what it is, and putting my beautiful brain back to work on more important matters.  I’ve spent a week in this muck, and it’s been... enlightening.  I’ll say that.
And even though I don’t agree with some of you - I can see by the CSI-level attention to detail that a lot of us have applied to all things SPN... that we could actually be mobilized into an almost unstoppable force for real good and real change.  If we wanted that.
We could probably figure out who ordered JFK’s assassination.  Figure out where Jimmy Hoffa’s buried.  Solve the mysteries of the pyramids.... help reunite missing kids with their families...Get Trump impeached... ahem.  You get it.
Or we could just keep wasting our pent-up aggression on other fans, and the actors of our favorite show.  Because that’s easy.  Choices.
Tumblr media
But wait!  There’s more!  Because I keep getting valid messages and concerns, this ridiculously long piece just got longer.
Posting these blogs has opened the door to a lot of private communication from both sides of the fence in the fandom, and I'm going to include some of my recent responses to an SPN fan who felt that her group of fans were not getting a fair shake and felt my blog targeted them.  We had a long discussion and she was very cool and had a lot of valid concerns and examples of other bad fan behavior dating wayyyy back, so I wanted to add this in.
I'm just going to paraphrase my own replies and print them here, so that people who may feel misrepresented or angry can see that, there are other ways to discuss these issues and for everyone to see that there's a better way than Twitter Wars.
(Paraphrased conversation subject matter in italics)
What's amazing is that J2 fans AND Misha fans have private messaged me with the exact same concerns.  And you have one very important thing in common:  You ALL feel victimized.  And you have been.   Know why?  It's because you've been victimizing each other.
(Slaps own face.  HARD.)  Not because of her.  But because of this whole enchilada.
If both groups are concerned about the same issues and both want the harassment to stop, whyyyy are you still at each others throats?
Well, I think it's because good people are capable of behaving very badly, especially online.  And all they’re doing is making themselves look ridiculous.  And they do not merit support.
A lot of people have been using me as a mediator, or prism, so to speak, with regards to this issue.  But you don't need me, when you all essentially want the same damn thing.
It's time to stop participating.  All you have to do is take a step back and say to yourself (or others if you’re feeling up to it) I'm not going to support harassment, hate or damaging misinformation.  And you can do that by unfollowing abusive accounts, by not "liking" or reblogging abusive content...and/or by not contributing to it yourself.  And if enough of us did that, BOOM, on our way to a solved problem.
These are only a few suggestions.  There's no cure or quick fix for this.
Only alternatives to current behaviors.
And I know there's a lot of bad blood between these groups as evidenced by the mountains of grievances I've been getting.  Can’t un-say or undo any of it.  But we can stop doing it going forward, can’t we?
As long as people want to keep concentrating on past transgressions and dwelling on past arguments, no one can move on.
And continuing to keep score with hopes to "win" something on here isn’t working either.  I’ve got bad news:  There's no "winning" here.  No grand prize.  Just more of the same bullshit.  And if you’re happy to sit in this pile of crap and continue to marinate?  That’s your prerogative.  By “your” I mean WHOMEVER fits the bill.
It's not my responsibility to make you play nice with each other.  Or mediate your arguments.  Though, it sounds like mediation is exactly what ya'll might need.  I'm just here, publicly stating how this all looks to me: Like a never-ending playground slapfight.
I think that there will always be "haters".  That's the nature of fandom, and life in general.  But if we stop promoting that kind of behavior with our support, and if these individuals have to lurk in the back channels, as opposed to being allowed to thrive and build fiefdoms all over social media.  That sounds like a good compromise to me.
And if you have a lot to express on this matter from your own perspective, there are better alternatives to spamming people on Twitter.  For example...
Write a blog!  If you’d like to provide an objective viewpoint, and also defend your stance but you’re afraid people will see that you support actor A, B, or C and automatically discount what you have to say?  Start a side blog.  Compile a list of wrongs that you’ve seen committed by both sides and be the mirror, and show people what they’ve become.
Create your own, blank slate and start fresh.
There, now I can drop the mic.

Tumblr media
so i’ve been in the twitter rp community since early 2015 and trends come and go very fast which is why i’m here today making this post to update you on what’s new since other guides are kinda outdated. oops. anyway everything will be under the read more and i hope it makes things more clear!
.01: filling out the app
if you’re familiar with appless rp’s then you already know how to do this because it’s the exact same. basically just fill in all your characters info in the areas it’s asked. since you don’t have to use gifs or anything for twitter, there’s also tons of cute faceclaims you can use. i even made a page (i’m debuting it early on this post) of pictures of 39 faceclaims you can check out here. by clicking on the pictures it’ll take you to their insta!
02.: making your account
now this part is where things have changed from other guides about twitter rping.
usernames: @ names with 2′s or 4′s in them are done. please leave them in 2016. @‘s that are like puns of your characters name is what everyone is doing. ex: FAIONTHEWALL, KELSEYULATER, SAHARDLYCARE, COCANICOLA... (none of these @s are mine i don’t even know if they’re taken i just made some up based off fcs)
display name: it used to be a huge trend to put tv show character names in all caps but now things are a little more… relaxed. people will put quotes from memes or vines in cool fonts (go to messletters to get cool fonts). this part isn’t really strict you can honestly put whatever kinda quote.
icons and headers: people don’t really match their icons and headers (if u wanna do that, go right ahead) but most people just put some kinda meme there or if you wanna make a fast friend tweet “lms to be my header” and Bam someone will send a pic and that can be your header. photoshoot icons are a little weird since you want the account to look like it’s a personal account u know? so basically: selfies. pictures w pets, candids taken by a friend, u know.
other: okay so twitter started this dumb thing where your notifs won’t work for 24 hours after your first tweet, so if you see people tweet “/ notifs” before ooc hour they’re just making sure that when the roleplay opens other members will be able to see them in their notifications. sounds kinda confusing, i know. it’s annoying. also, make sure to go into settings and privacy > timeline > and make sure “see best tweets first” is turned off otherwise your timeline will be all over the place. another thing is to go into the notifications tab and click the gear icon on the top right corner to turn off the ‘quality filter’. i’d suggest saving accounts so you don’t have to keep making new ones but honestly do whatever.
03: sending in your account
this part is easy. you don’t have to go to the tumblr main and send them an anon saying “my account is @ whatever!” all you have to do is follow the main twitter which will always be linked on the main tumblr and that’s it! you can even tweet them like “/ hey” just to make sure they get the notification.
.04: ooc hour / plotting in general
ooc hour is when all members have time before the roleplay officially opens to plot with other members. honestly, you will find that lots of people are lazy and don’t have anything planned because they prefer to go with chem which is okay. during this time people will also talk ooc and basically just get ready. however, plotting after you join a rp is kinda tricky. don’t feel bad if you join a group and post a plotting tweet that only gets a couple likes. nobody is trying to make you feel left out or anything, it’s just that at this point people are leaning more towards chem than actually plotting. but there will always be at least a few people that’ll be down to plot!!
.05: tweeting
i can’t really help with this part since it is your character that you’ll be playing and i obviously know nothing about them so i’m just gonna list some tips. first, make sure your tweets are actually something people can reply to. a simple “hello” will do just fine tbh. second, reply to others!!!! third, don’t…..make pity tweets… idk if this makes sense but don’t make pity tweets especially ooc. things like “/ wow i’m feeling sooo ignored i’m gonna drop lol” make people feel really awkward idk just talk to an admin if you’re feeling like that and they will help. finally, DO post and like lms tweets! lms tweets are anything from “lms for a dm” “lms to be in my milestone tweet”.
.06: quirk
THIS is honestly different for everyone. you’ll find people who love quirk and you’ll find people who think quirk is ruining rp. quirk is basically just memes and being funny. it’s a good way to make friends with other characters, but it’s annoying to be quirky during serious times. for example, if you’re in a horror rp and a character just got attacked your character wouldn’t be like “WHOOPSIE DAISIES! LOL! THEY SHOULDVE SEEN THAT COMING! :p”.
this is the end if i missed anything lmk also ? if you don’t want to do any of this you don’t have to i’m not gonna tell you how to rp cause at the end of the day it’s not that deep and you can do whatever you want.

Before they were out Em would troll reporters, saying we take turns being little spoon, and that he gets pedicures for Kelly.
So when Kelly did that video for buzzfeed reading thrust tweets he was holding up sheets of paper behind Kelly that said things like ‘Sorry ladies, he’s mine.’ ‘Only my toes’
Em takes bad selfies and turns them into PSAs.
Kelly knows Em can take a decent selfie. He has seen them on his daughters’ phones. He even took a good one with Kelly and Cassie last time she visited.
Em is actually more tech savvy than he pretends to be. He pretends to not know, or understand for a few reasons but the main two are that he likes messing with his boy friend, and the other is that he likes that Kelly will genuinely try to teach him how to do it and not just do it for Em himself. His Boyfriend cares enough that he wants to teach him a skill. Em sometimes ‘forgets’ a step and asks Kelly for help.
Em will change Kelly’s ringtone for him. Em and Cassie are the only two with ringtones and Kelly never has his ringer on. He has changed it to the Power Ranger communicator sound, the Kim Possible theme song, and Backstreet Boys ‘Everybody’. Em knows the entire dance to ‘Everybody’, and has done it in front of Kelly’s and his daughters’ friends.
Em hides the little bit of junk food he does eat in a bag of kale chips, or the empty quinoa box in the back of his pantry. His housekeeper knows of it and makes sure to not only keep it stocked, but changes out the bag and box occasionally so no one throws them away thinking it’s expired food.
Em will intentionally use a slang word wrong, especially if it’s a Cleveland or Ohio slang word.
Only referring to Cleveland as ‘the mistake by the lake’, and pointing at things, like “oh look, the mistake by the lake”, and it’s an ugly car or a random bird. When Kelly tries to do the Ohio call and response, Kelly says “O-H” and Em will say “E-L-L”.
Em would mess with Kelly about his tattoos.
“I didn’t know you liked Avengers so much?”
“Huh?”
“The letter ‘A’ on your stomach.”
Em gives Kelly so much shit for being a Browns fan, but it’s all in fun. He still surprises Kelly with Browns’ gear.
Em would not only give Kelly ridiculous bouquets of flowers. He would put flowers in Kelly’s hair and make him flower crowns. Em would teach Cassie how to make flower crowns.
Em has gotten Kelly two of those custom sequin pillows where one way it’s a solid color, and the other it’s a picture. One uses a bad selfie he took of the two of them, and the other is a picture of Em making a kissy face. Kelly was so flustered when he got them. He keeps them on his bed, so now one will mess with them. There is also a body pillow Em sent him. One side is Em just standing there but the back has Em bare ass hanging out. That pillow is in the back of his closet, and he does take it out to cuddle.
I don’t know if I have posted this yet.
When Em wants Kelly’s attention, or feels threatened for Kelly’s affection he sends him feet pictures. It’s super effective.
Em sends bare ankle sock pics when he feels flirty.
Kelly gets him back with lingerie specifically panties, or the pair of boxer briefs he special ordered that have EMIN∃M on the band. Em has a thing for butts.
Sometimes Kelly will wear the briefs and let his pants sag a little showing off the band. It drives Em nuts. Once their relationship is public, Kelly does this at events.
Kelly sends Em cute pictures of him at the beach. He asks for nudes. Also when he says he is going to send Kelly dirty pictures, it’s a picture of dirty dishes in the sink.
Em going “ooooo you wanna kiss me so bad” either when they are having an argument, or when Em is distracting Kelly from something. (quote from @samuraionnna on twitter)
When Em notices the paparazzi when out with Kelly, if he is not already holding one of Kelly’s hands, he will grab one, and intertwine their fingers, making sure they get a good shot of it.
They do spa days together. Robes, slippers, face masks, hair treatment the works. They will even make cucumber water, and set some cucumbers aside to put on their eyes like in the movies.
Everyone knows how cuddly Em is with his friends. He will Lounge on Kelly. Like if they are waiting for something Em will just lean hard against Kelly. Who am I kidding, they are both cuddlers.
Like how Kelly loves soft clothes, Em loves blankets. Em will burrito up in a blanket. Em has a blanket in almost every room of his house. Kelly got him a weighted blanket as a gift and Em didn’t move for half a day. Em will make nests out of pillows and blankets, and drag Kelly in for hours of cuddling. He even makes pillow/blanket forts for them in his media room.
I am changing what I said in shoes. Em has a ton of slippers. Some are from his daughters, some are from friends, and some he bought himself. His favorites are a pair that Kelly got him. They look like Godzilla feet, and he will stomp around and rap some or all of his song while wearing them.

Em has hobbies. He likes crafting, does photography, and gardens a little.
He watches Jenna Marbles video where she and Julian make the hand holding sculpture. Em convinces Kelly to do it with him, middle fingered and all.
Em has an old record player and loves old jazz. He will put on a record and slow dance with Kelly in the living room.
When Cassie starts to get into makeup, Kelly asks Em to ask Rihanna for help. She has a wonderful makeup brand, and she is so body positive, and is a great role model for Cassie. (I bet her mom is also great but this is Kelly trying to help his daughter.)
I was going to use these for something else, and I still am, but they also fit here really well, they aren’t as fleshed out as normal.
Em and Kelly go as Gomez and Mortician Addams for Halloween. He does the kiss up the arm thing just to make Kelly flustered. Em also got Rihanna to teach him some dance moves, and tried to ‘Tango’ with Kelly, in their costumes. (I have a whole list of holidays, and halloween costumes and I want to expand on this.)
Em also does Disney bounding. He gets Kelly to go as goofy and he goes as Donald. (I will be doing more Disney)
Em does the corniest and sweetest things for Valentine’s Day. Like flowers, chocolates, and a nice night out. One year he takes Kelly to Disneyland just so they can watch the fireworks together, while riding the ferris wheel.
When Em finds out about Sweetest Day (it’s basically a second Valentine's day that people celebrate in Cleveland), he decides that they are going to celebrate it. The first year Em celebrated it was in 2019, and it fell on October 16, the day before his birthday. Kelly was off on a movie set and he had to be in New York, so he bought and sent Kelly one of those giant Teddy bears, the ones that are 6 ft tall (about 2 meters), to his movie set. It was wearing one of Em’s hoodies with his logo, and a pair of matching sweatpants. He made sure that when it was delivered it was put in Kelly’s movie cast chair. When Kelly was done shooting for the day and back in his hotel room, bear and all. He face times Em.
“Happy Sweetest Day, Sweetheart!” Em says then blows him kisses.
“Ugh I should have never told you about this holiday.”
“What, you didn’t like your present?”
“I didn’t like how I had to explain to the entire crew what Sweetest Day is, and why you sent me a teddy bear as big as me.” Kelly sighs, and gives Em a tired smile. “But thank you for the bear, and the new sweats, and Happy Sweetest Day.”
This year (2020) Sweetest Day falls on Em’s Birthday.

We need some cringey clingy (troll) boyfriend Em headcanons.
Like him ending all of his and Kells facetime calls no matter how brief with smooches just to see the blonde blush or flip him off.
Sending ridiculous emoji filled texts like "💔💔missing u🍑😭💔💔" every now and again when theres a stretch between communication.
Or even him sending over the top flower arrangements with xoxoxo cards and balloons to Kells sets just so he can get a huffy call about how the blondes not gonna tell him his schedule anymore (even though he always does and Em can easily find that information out without Kells input anyway)
And even before they go public with their relationship but have squashed their beef and become "friendly" Em also just keeps blatantly deadpanning that Colson is his boyfriend to the media. Answering questions about possible future collaboration hints with "Actually that was just us on a date-" and other TRUE things that have both Paul and Kelly just pulling their beard hair, and head hair out respectively.
Luckily the media chalks it all up to his quirky sense of humor but that just gives Em more room to act even more ridiculous.
I just want soft boyfriend Em who doesn't give a fuck and actually lowkey tortures Kelly by being in love with him.
@emgkheadcannons I'd love to see your take on it
