Wait are there still people who don’t know about Carry On, its sequels, and the excellent manga? Ok running with this premise - go read it 🧑🏼‍❤️‍💋‍🧑🏻⚔️🧛🏻‍♂️🔥🪄🐉👩🏾‍🦱💍🐐👩‍🦳💓

To all my fellow former fans of Harry Potter who feel the series is tainted now in the light of JKR's bigotry, I highly recommend The Simon Snow Trilogy by Rainbow Rowell. These books also involve students in a magical school and the Chosen One trope, but unlike HP, this series is not written by a transphobic bigot and is extremely diverse. The main romance is M/M, there are multiple Characters of Color, and there is a W/W romance in the final book of the trilogy.

I've read Carry On twice and I'm starting it a third time but in the Spanish translation (i'm on page 66, chapter 9), and there are a lot of things that make so much sense reading them in my first language, but I have 3 things to say about Carry On:

Simon is incredibly funny and charming and sweet, and my baby just wants to grow old to see if he can be happy and if things will get better for him. If I had read CO in Spanish since the beginning I would have fell for Simon so hard, instead of hating him haha.

There are so, so many foreshadowings for Wayward Son and AWTWB, so many. The clothes Baz makes him wear, the driving lessons, the flat Penny and Simon will share. Simon's trauma. Everything. In the first 20 pages, there were so many things I know will come, and I'm fascinated. This book is so well and beautifully crafted, I'm amazed.

The Mage is an underrated absolutely fascinating character. He's so interesting and complex, and brilliant. In only his first appearance, he manages to show so much depth. He's not only what will be later discovered to be the villain, and manipulative and etc etc, but he's so much more than that, and he cares for Simon. This is possibly what shocks me the most. He truly cares for him, and opposed of what he's been portrayed by the fandom, he's gentle. When he asks Simon to leave Watford and Simon starts leaking magic, the Mage stops his request and comforts him. Simon lies down on the bed, and the Mage checks his temperature by putting his hand on Simon's forehead and then strokes his cheek. THAT'S A DAD GESTURE. That, right there, is a gesture that slipped the Mage's facade. That wasn't supposed to happen! Davy is composed and constantly plotting and he has to be prepared for the worst (Simon has never seen him sat down), but when Simon started to feel bad and had a negative reaction, Davy wanted to help and make him better. And then asked Simon if he had anything he wanted to talk to about, he could. DAVY WAS DESPERATE. He yearns for Simon's contact too. And if you notice, even thought the Mage wanted to take Simon out of Watford saying it was urgent, he didn't, because it wasn't what Simon wanted. The Mage is, maybe, the best character in the book.

Carry On is a work of genius, to be honest, in every paragraph, there are so many details and little stories that you forget with so many things happening, but I'm forever thankful of it existing.
