"Ah, shit..."

"Raven?" Summer called out to her former teammate. "Raven, is that you?"

"Hello, Summer... Tai... Yang..."

"And Ruby!" Piped up the younger Rose.

"What, uh... What's going on?" Taiyang asked, clearly feeling awkward about the scenario, and to be honest, who wouldn't? His ex-lover was seated at a cafe, alone, with two teacups in front of her.

"I'm on a date."

"Oh, really?" Growled Yang. "Guess Dad just isn't good enough for you anymore?"

"Your father and I broke things off years ago." She then looked to the Rose duo. "He's clearly gotten over me. Why is it wrong for me to do the same?"

"The same?!" Yang's eyes flashed red and her hair golden. "How is this even close to being-"

"Yang! Enough!" The girl calmed down a bit at her father's words. "It's good to see you again, Raven. I'm happy you've moved on."

"Thank you." Raven replied, cordially.

"My, this new lover must be having some kind of effect on you." Summer said. "I've never heard you say thank you before."

"Maybe." Raven shrugged. "I didn't really notice, I guess. If you don't mind, I'd like to get back to my date."

"Oh, of course!" Summer nodded. "Come on, girls, let's leave Raven to romantic rendezvous."

"Her what?" Ruby asked.'

"Her date." Yang answered, already turning away. Not bothering to say good-bye, she already started walking. However, a familiar voice suddenly rang in her ear.

"Sorry I took so long. The bathroom only lets one person at a..." She slowly turned to see her friend, a fellow blond whose blue eyes were strikingly similar to another man she knew. One who was standing nearby and at a similar height to him. "Uh, hi, Ruby... Yang... and... parents?"

"Parents." Summer nodded. "Raven? Would you like to introduce us?"

"Not really, no."

"Uh, well..." The young man extended his hand and the elder took it. "I'm Jaune, Jaune Arc."

"Taiyang Xiao Long." The father shook the hand. "And, uh, this is awkward."

"Oh, good," Yang said, "then it isn't just me."

Summary:

Before there was Team RWBY, there was Team STRQ. And before Team STRQ were huntsmen and huntresses, they were students.

Summer, Taiyang, Raven, and Qrow are four of Beacon Academy’s newest students, and although they don’t know it yet, powerful forces have taken note of them. But if they’re going to survive being pawns in a secret game, they’ll first have to survive each other.

Summer was sitting on her bed in Team STRQ’s dorm room. If she’d had to pick a word to describe how she was feeling at the moment, “dumbfounded” was the only one that came to mind. One minute she’d been getting ready for bed, and the next minute Raven and Qrow had burst into the room. Raven had then frantically proceeded to explained to Summer that she and her brother had, apparently, been recruited by Ozpin to be secret agents of some kind, and that she’d, somehow, eavesdropped on a meeting between two of Vale’s criminal gangs. And if all of that wasn’t enough, it seemed that some mysterious person had hired these gangs to hunt Summer herself down because of her eye color. If it had been anyone other than Raven saying the crazy things she was saying, even Headmaster Ozpin himself, Summer wouldn’t have believed them.

Qrow and Taiyang were presently sitting on Qrow’s bed together across from Summer, and Raven was anxiously pacing back and forth in the middle of the room. It unsettled Summer to see how distressed Raven was acting given how unflappable she usually was. It really drove home the point of how serious the situation was.

“Okay. Well…” Summer said, struggling to think of anything to add to the conversation. “Did you tell Ozpin yet?”

“No,” Raven said.

“Shouldn’t you?” Summer asked.

“He already knows. He’s got to already know!” Raven said, practically ranting at this point. “He just wanted me to see it! To see her! What’s he even going to do about it? He’ll just keep on playing his stupid games!”

The massive man of iron glared outwards, to the mainland beyond Patch, as if daring the world to challenge him. Wait... Oh, there's a rose in what looks like hair on her head. This was a giant robot woman.

Summer: WHAT IS THAT?!

Ruby: Ana!

Taiyang: (Sighs) She says her name is Ana.

"Remember, Ruby," Summer Rose said to her youngest daughter, Ruby, as she adjusted her hair and cloak. "focus on your studies, be your best self, and no overindulging on sweets."

"Mooom," Ruby whined to her mother, "I'll be fine."

"You and your sister still nearly gave me and your father a heart attack over that Dust Robbery incident," she turns her silver eyes to Yang, "and that fight in the night club."

"They were crooks," Yang defended, ignoring the glare from her father, Taiyang.

"Just," Summer takes a deep breath, giving her girls a stern glance, "both of you: Stay out of trouble. Is that clear?"

"Yes, M'am," the two girls said, as they grabbed their perspective luggage and made their way towards the Bullhead. "Bye, Mom! Bye, Dad!"
