Fortnight of Books 2024: Day 12
A book that made you laugh
Buffalo Brenda by Jill Pinkwater is one of the funniest and quirkiest books I know. I’ve read it several times, and it always brings me joy. I read it aloud to my sister this year.
A book you did not finish in 2024
There were a handful of books I didn’t finish, and I feel guilty about all of them—and hope to finish them at another time. One of them, Kill the Dawn by Emily Hayse was so, so incredibly good. It’s a Viking retelling of Hamlet. However, I was bracing for painful events and a tragic arc, so I read it slowly with many pauses—and never finished. That sometimes happens to me with tragedies. I really, really want to finish it this year.
A book you bought in 2024
The new paperback edition of Rebel Wave: Season 1 by Tor Thibeaux. I was very excited about that one, and I can’t wait to reread it with actual pages in my hands, after I binged the e-book version.
A book you enjoyed well-enough but wasn’t a stand-out Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep by Gail Carson Levine. I read several of Levine’s books when I was in high school, especially Ella Enchanted, but this was my first experience with the author’s Princess Tales series. It was entertaining and imaginative, and it made me laugh, but it wasn’t a favorite.

ROUND 1B, MATCH 2 OUT OF 16!

Propaganda Under the Cut:
Cinderellis:
I submit him more as early cannon fodder than anything else, though he is a very fun and interesting character to follow in the 150ish page book we find him in, where he fulfills both the Cinderella main points of mythic importance, as well as a Ukrainian fairy tale involving the rule of three and how it applies to precious metals, and the materials one may use on a quest. Also, both he, and the girl he eventually marries are just fun characters to see the viewpoints of.
Danielle:
This series begins after the HEA and Danielle doesn't realize how much magic is really out there in the world. She is a wonderfully complex character who isn't afraid to say what she doesn't know. Really keeps the embodiment of Cinderella as a kind person

"A girl too lovely to be really true..."
I've never drawn Brandy's Cinderella before and thought it was time to cross that off the list. I so appreciate this adaptation for having a Filipino prince, what a dream! And Brandy's so angelic and perfect in this role.

Do you ever watch a show or a movie or any piece of media meant for kids and just think about how the story or character or that one scene or whatever just spoke to your heart and soul, or just how profound it made you happy or break your heart. And just sit their thinking that this is for literal children, who probably still couldn't 100% understand the gravity of what they are consuming or probably couldn't articulate how they felt about it other than say they liked it or they dont, or it made them happy or sad, and you, a grown ass person is just thinking about how this thing meant for kids is just so simple yet complex with so many layers of emotions and plot and etc. That explores themes and subject better than media meant for your age, in a way that is simple yet incredible done.

Sleeping Beauty (1959) turned 65, and it remains still such a beautiful film. It's one of my favourite quintessential fantasy films, and I adore princess Aurora and Maleficent!
