It seems like Summer H. Howell has been cast as Carrie White in the new tv series!! Do you have any thoughts on it? You are the biggest fan of Carrie I've ever seen, after all.
Oh wow, so this is the way I'm finding out about this haha!
I find it funny and sweet when people ask for my opinions on this new series. I love that the conversation around Carrie is very much alive these days.
So I won't lie, my initial and first reaction seeing who is likely going to be our new Carrie White... was a sigh. 😅
And I want to be careful about not expressing ill will towards this actress - I really don't want it to come off that way. I'm not familiar with Summer at all, but I'm sure she's probably going to be wonderful. I'm just disappointed that on the part of casting, this feels derivative of what we've already seen three times at this point. We're at four adaptations now and yet again, our heroine is going to be portrayed as a thin, conventionally attractive actress that will be given a "plain jane" transformation.
The reason I was hoping for an actress who looked visually more like Carrie in the novel, or at least an out of the box casting choice, is that would have been a very firm, bold statement by this adaptation to JUSTIFY its existence in the first place. No book to screen translation will ever be accurate down to every little detail, and that's silly to expect from any adaptation, but the fact that we are now at a fourth take on Carrie feels like maybe we should be leaning more towards the novel in areas the other movies didn't reach.
With that said, I'm still looking forward to this series exploring and expanding upon different things that the previous movies did not, based on the logline given for this series, and while i can't reveal how I know this, I was able to preview three scenes for this series, and based on those, I can confirm so far that the series WILL be making an effort to explore certain things in this story in a way that actually does feel fresh!
On the visual side of things, there are still plenty of ways they can have our new Carrie stand apart from her predecessors. For my personal nitpick and wishlist, ditch the pale pink strapless dress and give her a red dress. ;)

Oh this was really sweet, thanks for the tag @flastar13! I love a lil questionnaire to procrastinate with hehe.
Rules:
Tag nine people you want to get to know better.
Favorite color:
Currently in my mustard yellow era. One friend told me I looked good in yellow about a year ago, and I made that my whole personality since. Also love pastel palettes.
Currently reading:
Wynd Book One by James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas
The Pale Queen by Ethan M. Aldridge
Sailor Moon Vol 1
Last song:
"Believe" by Cher has been very much the mood these days.
Last movie:
The Woman In The Yard. I ended up seeing this one in theatres and it was very different from what I was expecting. Also hit a bit close to home! I thought the performances were beautiful and the production was very well done. I highly recommend it.
Last series:
Pen15. Did my second rewatch of this show! So, so good. Another one I super recommend.
Sweet, Savoury, Spicy:
I lean towards savoury, but my sweet tooth definitely developed during covid, which I think was common for lots of people. I am very enthusiastic about spice, and love a good hot sauce. I don't have an impressive spice tolerance but I enjoy spicy things.
Cravings:
A filthy burger that's def not good for you that I can dip in ghost pepper ranch.
Tea/Coffee:
I never developed a taste for coffee, so I drink lots of tea, mainly after meals to help with bloating lol.
Currently working on:
KLOUD 9, my queer sci-fi romance/adventure graphic novel series! Coming (redacted)
A short queer superhero/drama/romance indie comic for a cool writer I linked up with on Instagram!
Drawing some superhero sketch cards for a secret deck for the company Upper Deck
Prepping and planning for my first art tabling event next month!
If you've read this far, I tag you.
rules: tag nine people you want to get to know better
Tagged by @indrid-hot - thanks a bunch!
Favorite Color: A nice, warm, sunny orange - but also honestly most other colors of the rainbow and then some.
Currently Reading: The Tevinter Nights Dragon Age short story collection.
Last Song: L'appuntamento - Ornella Vanoni
Last Movie: Ah, gosh. HM. I haven't watched anything that's not a TV show in a while. I semi-voluntarily caught the last fifteen minutes of Scrooged over the winter holidays I guess?
Last Series: Last series I watched any part of is, as always, "Emergency!" because I will never not be stuck in 70's paramedic hell. If we're talking new-to-me shows, a friend's making me watch Grey's Anatomy (early seasons) once a week, probably because observing my growing despair about the characters' poor life choices is fun. I don't even normally watch medical shows, and yet here we are lol
Sweet, Savoury, Spicy: Savory if I had to pick
Craving: Some good spaghetti with olive oil and obscene amounts of lightly toasted garlic.
Tea/Coffee: Yes please, lol
Currently working on: OH BOY WHAT A QUESTION.
Spinning: Gotland on my spindles (4-ply, one single per spindle, for funsies - except I accidentally mixed up which bits of fiber go with which single on which spindle, so that'll be fun to sort out...), 7oz/200g of red Merino on the wheel (for a crochet hat, followed by 9.5 oz of red and black Merino for a woven scarf). But also 24.5oz/700g of grey Merino. And cotton on the supported spindle. And I've got some laceweight viscose on the mini turkish spindle that I should really work on...
Crocheting: Half a dozen things, including a lacy collar that needs buttons and blocking, a gigantic star-shaped wrap-around shawl, an incredibly boring granny square top for my little sister, and too many others to count.
Art: The Emergency! tarot as the eternal never-ending WIP; I also have some Dragon Age Veilguard related plans revolving around the Grand Necropolis and irl Catacomb Saints and I'd love to get some DA-style tarot cards done for all my player characters.
Writing: I still have a couple unfinished fanfics that need another chapter, as well as two deeply self-indulgent OC/Emergency! crossovers that friends are making me write, and I also have some Dragon Age stuff in the works - though if anyone will ever see that is another question entirely.
Music: Practicing various stuff for LARP; also slowly chipping away at Hozier's Work Song because my partner asked nicely.
With no pressure, I will tag: @geminyde, @caseyscraftycorner, @swords-n-spindles, @alpacazappa, @rosesonneptune, @rose-of-pollux, @zooarchaeologyatdinner, @kalikatze aaaaand I can't decide on a 9th person to tag so whoever wants to do this: You're It!

Hi Dom! Idk if you heard about this but there has been some rumours speculating that Milly Shapiro (who was in Matilda The Musical and Hereditary) is considered to be the chosen actress for Carrie. I also put a side by side image of Milly and one of your art of Carrie and they do seem similar in comparison. What do you think? Do you think she is well suited for the role?

I did see this! I’m a bit skeptical in terms of the source of where this info is coming from (Daniel Richtman - he can be hit or miss when it comes to leaks.)
But it really interests me as a potential casting. I wouldn’t be upset over this if it does happen! It’s kind of wild if it does, just because I’ve seen people fancast her as Carrie, so it’s always a bit surreal to see fancasts be taken seriously. It’s probably one of the better fancasts though.
I’m a bit “eh that’s fine I guess” with the other casting being mentioned - Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, not because I doubt her ability to portray the character, but only because she’s another fancast I’ve regularly seen for Margaret, and largely due to people seeing her on Midnight Mass and just going “she can be an overzealous religious lady, so she should play this other overzealous religious lady!” It’s very “Bill Skarsgard played Pennywise so therefore he should play the Joker!” From fans. I was just hoping to be a little more surprised by an unconventional casting maybe. If she does end up playing Margaret, again, I wouldn’t be mad. I’m sure she’d do way more than fine! I’ve already seen that she’s really, really good on Midnight Mass.
Going back to Milly though, without any information for any of the other actresses that are being looked at for the role, I think she’d be a very strong choice for Carrie. Only having seen her in Hereditary, I know she’d pull off the vulnerability and social outcast energy easily. I’d be very curious to see her pull out the darker and more sadistic side of Carrie, which I hope to see this adaptation explore much more to further separate her from the other Carrie actresses. Sissy was the most sympathetic and less antagonistic portrayal, and I feel like Angela and Chloe tried to lean more into the less likeable side of Carrie from the books. As much as I enjoy the “Carrie did nothing wrong” takes, I do really appreciate her in the novel, encompassing ALL the roles: heroine, victim, villain, monster.
Also just as a final thought, if Milly does get the role, I think that would be really neat just for the fact that her real life sister, Abi Monterey played Dorothy Spinner on the show Doom Patrol. I was listening to an interview Abi did with BobaTalks on YouTube where she was describing a scene in which Dorothy gets her first period. Abi mentions that she drew inspiration from Carrie, and actually had the character in mind even before that scene as reference for her to pull from when playing Dorothy Spinner. I just thought that was an interesting coincidence! :)

I love your interpretation of fairy tales through drawings. Have you thought about drawing your version of the entire Cinderella cast? Which version would it be, or a combination of all of them?
Thank you so much!! I’m so happy you enjoy them so far!
And yes - I love the Cinderella story (who doesn’t!) and I’ve been making designs for the entire cast of characters. I’ll actually be making designs for two versions, which I hope to make visually distinct from each other because I liked the differences of the Grimm and Perrault stories enough to justify them for two very different sets of designs and concepts.

How’s you graphic novel going?
We're two/three books into the series currently! Our first book is just being finished up by our colorist, and I'm currently inking the second book.
We recently got updates about our release date, and while the publisher hasn't given us the go to officially announce it anywhere yet, I'm... VERY hyped about it.
Thank you so much for asking this! I honestly appreciated this question :'))) <33

I was wondering, since your Disney art is so pretty, have you any interest in Queen's council and Twisted tales, Disney's YA books? Would love to see art of some of the scenes from those (Jasmine riding Rajah with a bow in hand and shooting a man, hello how awesome is that!?) :D Dark accession about Cinderella's step-sisters also surprised me when I thought it's demographic would be lower, I found myself crying over it (main character realising she has never been complimented and breaking down over it, oof.)
Hiya!
I’ve never actually picked them up and read them but I’ve heard good things online!
I love the idea of Jasmine riding atop Rajah and I’m surprised I haven’t ever thought of that, seen fanart, or seen it in the movies as far as I remember? (Maybe she does in the sequels? I haven’t seen them in years) I think that’s really badass haha. Always loved that she was the one princess that had a tiger.

Wait, wait, wait, I know I just gave an ask but that was before i saw your art of Cinderella and i hope this is okay but I just have to say something-! I love Cinderella so much, I'm so obsessed that I dream of having a Cinderella wedding dress, it's that bad, and your art of her makes me so giddy and happy and AAAHHHHHHH!!! I just needed to tell youuuu!!!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻💎💎💎✨️✨️✨️

Oh my goodness, you and me both! (Don’t think I didn’t clock that Cinderella profile picture in the first ask 🦋🤭) She’s just a really fantastic heroine!
I really hope you do go through with a Cinderella-esque wedding dress in the future - nothing short of iconic.
And that honestly makes me super happy to hear that coming from such a big Cinderella fan! I only strive to do her justice in my artworks 😤💪🏽
Thank you so much for telling me!!!! 😭💙🌸

I did some Robin outfit re/designs for fun! I haven't drawn the batboys much, so this was a lot of fun to do! Should I do Stephanie as Robin and Carrie Kelley next?

Don't know if you're still coming here. But, just curious, since I've heard they're planning an 8-part mini-series of another adaptation of "Carrie" what would you expect? One thing I want to expect is "No rehash" envision a more... new take, either modernized or set in the 70s ... And let's hope the prom scene is worth the wait, of rage...
I’m still around! I’m most active on here and Instagram. Trying to accustom myself on Bluesky! But I run off to tumblr usually as my comfort/safe space
I’m very locked in to this upcoming adaption so I frequently check to see if there’s been any updates and news. What excites me is they’re likely filming in Vancouver in June, so I’m VERY tempted to go check out the filming locations if they leak.
And so far Mike Flanagan has stated in an interview a little while back that this version will be set in modern day, and technology will play a role in changing/adding to the story, I’m guessing for Carrie’s social life and the bullying will be taken to an even more extreme level here. This is what I was originally hoping the 2013 reboot was going to explore, but only went up to a certain point. I’m hopeful that they will really take the time to play with this even more, to really set it apart from the previous incarnations.
From the official synopsis given, it already sounds pretty different in that Ralph White will have more of a presence in the story, and if I had to make guesses, I think Carrie will have more thoughts and feelings over his sudden death, and once she discovers her powers, will probably be looking into him more, which also would set her characterization apart from the previous Carrie’s.
There’s a couple things I’m really hoping they include that will really help them stand apart:
- the rain of stones (I love this flashback and I hope they finally keep it. I like it in the 2002 version, and what they tried out in the 2013 reboot but ultimately cut out)
- riffing off that, dig deeper into more of Carrie’s powers. A lot of people who were only familiar with the 1976 film were confused that Carrie was suddenly displaying abilities outside of telekinesis in the 2013 movie, but her book counterpart absolutely had more abilities than just moving objects around!
- The town destruction (again, I know the 2002 version gave their best shot at this! I’m hoping amazon will give them the budget that will finally fully realize this scene.)
- the red dress! I know it’s much more visually striking to have red on pink, but if the first official look of the show reveals that her prom dress is red, I’ll be SOLD.
- keep Carrie bloody in the final act! No washing the blood off her hands (metaphorically AND physically!) I like her visually looking like a monster by the end of the story, and there’s no coming back from what she’s done. I know there’s always arguments for her not being a villain, but I think she’s all of the above - she’s a victim in her story and ultimately by the end, the villain! Give her the full arc, not just story-wise but visually!
These are just some thoughts off the top of my head! I’d love to hear what you’d want or expect from the show, or any other fans for that matter who want to pitch in!
