#fairy godmother

I just realized why Terry Pratchett making fairy godmothers a sub-category of witches in his Discworld ("Witches Abroad") is actually deeper than I thought - beyond just "they are other all-female magic-users with magic wands".

I think it is a nod to how in old and traditional depictions (especially British ones) Cinderella's godmother is very often drawn as witch-looking or bearing witchy attributes:

I say "especially British" because unlike in France where witches and fairies are very different, in England fairytales are under the patronage of "Mother Goose", traditionally represented as a kind and benevolent witch...

... resulting in this tradition of making the fairy godmother a "Mother Goose" figure, a witch-like fairy. Hence why I think the very British Pratchett would be more interested in making fairytale-godmothers witches rather than fairies.

Roman: Oh that’s no problem, I’ll be done and in my pajamas by like 9pm

Fairy Godmother: Oh but my dear, you have until mid—

Roman: Look I’m in my 30s, 9pm is as long as I’ll last—

"Well everybody, that's our show." Mickey said to the crowd. "Mike, take us out of here." He said as Mike began to be lowered down to speak out advertising sponsors. "Transportation for the House of Mouse courtesy of: Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo Limo Service! You'll have a ball with one of our magically mobile vegetables." Mike spoke as the screen showed images of the transportation service.

"The classic pumpkin," Mike spoke as Cinderella and Prince Charming were next to it. "the luxury town gourd, or the extravagant stretch watermelon." Mike said as the Fairy Godmother waved. "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo Limo Service! Home by midnight or your ride's free. Some limos might contain seeds." Mike closed as the toons began to leave after the show.

"Good night, Mr. Toad." Daisy waved to Mr. Toad as he drove out. "Here's you doggy bag, Miss De Vil." Goofy said to Cruella as Pluto handed it to her. "Forget the bag... I'll take the doggy." Cruella smirked and laughed, scaring Pluto away as she took her bag. Max brought Ursula's ride, a mobile tidal wave for her. "Surf's up, dudette." Max smiled as Ursula drove off. "And hey, thanks for visiting the Tooniest place on Earth! See you real soon." Mickey said signing off.

"Time to go." I said as I went on the Flying Nimbus.

"So, I'm just relaxing for the night?" Zizzi would ask as she was stepping up to the club. Looking over the reservation for dinner as she tilted her head. "Well, I'm looking to having some nice dinner, dessert and maybe seeing some friends." She said as she looked excited. (House of mouse)

"Welcome to my club!" Donald waved and shook Zizzi's hand, as he was the greeter of the club, and running the House of Mouse with Mickey Mouse fifty-fifty.

"Okay then, Miss... Zizzi. Have a nice time." Daisy Duck spoke to Zizzi, checking for her reservation at the House of Mouse. Minnie was happy to see Zizzi as Mickey was getting ready with Pluto's help.

"Anything I can get you on the menu?" Goofy asked as he was the waiter of the club.

Shrek 2, while a cinematic masterpiece, is also an interesting look at queerness and comp het.

Fiona is married so it's time to reunite with her parents. But instead of marrying a prince, she's married to an ogre. Not just that, but she's also an ogre. (Yes everyone knew she would sometimes be an ogre but that was when she was a child, she didn't know she would be an ogre for the rest of her life, and besides once she met the right prince she would stop being an ogre. She was supposed to stop being an ogre.)

But okay they're both ogres. We can still ask about when they'll have children because even if they're ogres they can still have kids, right? That's what married princes and princesses do so naturally that's what everyone does. Even if ogres might not be great parents (I've heard that ogres eat their young, is that something you people do?) it's still something that should be discussed.

And okay you can stay in Fiona's childhood bedroom filled with all the reminders that hey, everyone thought she was just a princess and princesses marry princes. Her toys left out from the last time she played with them. The prince slays the ogre. The princess offers a token of gratitude for slaying the ogre. Fiona wrote Mrs. Fiona Charming a million times in her diary because what else was she supposed to grow up to be?

And Harold, the Fairy Godmother says, you have to fix this, your kingdom can't be ruled by ogres. You were unfit to rule, to be loved, when you were a frog but I changed you, I made you better, I made you a prince. You know how this works. Think of your daughter's safety.

Shrek goes to the Fairy Godmother and oh honey, ogres don't live happily ever after. It's just not done. It hasn't happened in all of fairy tale history. You have to change the both of you to be happy. You have to present as a prince and a princess. It will be better. You'll fit in better that way. You'll be accepted that way.

I've never drawn Brandy's Cinderella before and thought it was time to cross that off the list. I so appreciate this adaptation for having a Filipino prince, what a dream! And Brandy's so angelic and perfect in this role.

Inspired to draw that scene from Team StarKid's Cinderella's Castle. (+a surprise Sir Hop-A-Lot and Crumb under the cut.)

The lighting on that set then (bright green with deep blue on the side) was so good that I had a strong impulse to just try and capture how I was envisioning the scene playing out in an illustrated fairytale-esque forest-scape-y thingy.

I really want to draw a Cinderella moment next - so hard to pick a specific scene!! I'll be thinking about it as I catch up on work rn. Hopefully I can get to it some time tonight. I did do a quick sketch of Rancilda that I'll post soon though!

It's been a wild couple of weeks, but I'm coming out the other side feeling energized~
