German musicians of all genres tended to be grouped into their certain scenes and they have proceeded according to the rules of the latter without trying to break them at some opportunities. Still, some didn't belong anywhere. For instance, where would Sandra's place actually be? While you can see her taking a concert tour with, say, Kim Wilde and Belinda Carlisle, she is sonically her own thing. The music she does is pop, yet there's something odd about the production Michael Cretu used on her work. Her 80's work feels melancholically dark, because one has a hunch Sandra and Michael decided to go for Jim Steinman, yet they got bored doing that and they chased their own direction, which does function well, since some of her 80's tunes deal with the dark night of the soul.
