It’s been a long while since I’ve been able to post anything of my own on this little blog. Unfortunately that’s because I’ve not had time to even think about getting any hobbying done for almost the whole of 2024. There’s been a lot to contend with in terms of real life “stuff”, and I’ve just not had the time, motivation or desire to go anywhere near a paintbrush.
To cut a long story short, the last couple of years have been a bit tough.
I’ve kept an eye on all things Warhammer though, and am getting to a place where I might just be able to carve out some minutes here and there to get back to the hobby I love so much.
To try and get some motivation and hobby mojo back, I decided to enter a large scale painting competition last weekend, The Highlander Painting Awards.
Tumblr media
The competition was held alongside the Celtic Cup, a Warhammer 40k Super GT (the first of its kind in Scotland I believe). From what I understand, the Highlander Painting Awards is also the largest organised painting competition to be held in Scotland, but I could be wrong (please correct me if that’s not accurate!).
Tumblr media
When I bought my ticket for the competition a few months ago, I made tentative plans to paint at least one new miniature to enter. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t carve out the time needed to get anything painted, and I didn’t have the motivation either.
I ended up submitting three entries I already had painted from previous years: Kurdoss Valentian from my Nighthaunt, Stormsire’s Cursebrealers from my Stormcasts, and an Achilles Ridgerunner from my GSC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The standard of entires was phenomenal with so many amazing pieces on display across all the categories (Single Miniature, Unit/Squad, Large Miniature/Vehicle, Bust, and Diorama).
In total there were over 120 individual entries so it was really well attended with folk travelling from all over the UK and even some guys from Norway and the Netherlands!
I really didn’t have any expectations of doing well after seeing the standard of stuff on display.
So I was genuinely shocked when my Stormsire’s Cursebreakers took bronze in the Unit/Squad category! AND, my Achilles Ridgerunner somehow won gold in the Large Miniature/Vehicle category!!
Tumblr media
I still can’t believe it, and am so happy I decided to enter as I had a major case of self-doubt the night before the event and almost backed out entirely.
The whole thing has ignited the hobby spark again and I’m really keen to get back to painting asap. I’m hoping to get some paint down on models soon, might even be able to finish a model before the New Year! 😅.
Hope you folks are all well!
Happy Hobbying,
Dave

Working on a project -- "Modelling Workshop: Fantasy Barn" by Phil Lewis, White Dwarf 140, August 1991. I think with minor variations this would work for any period of historical wargame in North America including Wild West, or WWII Eastern Front.

Thunderbirds Flakur Pæth, 1st Demi-Chapter, 7th Reserve Company, Envoy to Inquisitor Bru’Tus Damascan of the Ordo Diviticus:
Being the only Imperial Chapter currently active in the Barbatos Divide, the Thunderbirds have become no stranger to sending lone marines to work alongside humans in the sector. Especially important ones such as the foremost prominent Inquisitor operating within the sector. Their jobs become that of a liaison reporting information back to the Chapter while performing clandestine missions that, usually, coincide with the assistance of whoever they have been assigned to. Having recently been removed from Battle Line Company Three, Pæth is now deployed to work alongside Inquisitor Bru’Tus. Despite the importance of his mission the marine has shown some protest to his station, believing his effort to be better spent serving on the front lines against the Mors Dictares.

As Magical Warfare became mechanised, and Mages Towers’ fell far behind established lines and combat zones, those powerful Wizards needed to be moved up into the fight with something that’ll house their great magicks and be just as defensible.
I’ve finally made a Tonk! I had told Apocrypha Now in the past I’d do one but I never got around to it, and it’s been a a while now but I’ve been constantly thinking about Narcoleptic Wizard‘s Aethertonk challenge. Welp, finally decided todo it and I’m super happy with the results, it’s not as silly as most tonks are which is a bit of a shame but I definitely think it’s badass atleast—and I’m very happy that the turret AND wheels fully function, no need to pretend it moves across the board I can just push it and it goes.

The circle cutouts are for 3mm diameter x1mm depth magnets. They are press-fit! No glue required, but you can for peace of mind.
Behold! Assembly test with satisfying click sound. Does this count as an Omnimech now?
I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen an omni Hunchback given how common Swayback mods seems to have been in canon. When I found out it got a sequel in the Quasimodo I got all excited but nope, still not omni.

Model of a crashed spelljammer I dropped on my party while they were minding their own business
The ship is a dice tower that can be removed so my parter can still use it- thinking about pasting a ufo or something in the empty spot eventually
I made the fields out of cardboard peices I ripped the top layer off of, then glued them to a board. I built the rest up with various acrylic mediums (pumice gel my beloved)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After it dried I gave it a layer of black gessopodge (gesso I mixed with modpodge, smells very.. interesting) and a layer of base paint/dry brushing. Then I just glued on some grass and voila!

Nothing crazy here as much as I just wanted to do a dragon and not hurt my brain on a color scheme. And ended up here!

I hit a big milestone this week.
For the first time in almost ten months, I picked up a paintbrush and painted some miniatures.
I’ve had no time or motivation to do any Hobbying for most of this year for a number of reasons but I’m now at a point where I can carve out a few minutes here and there to get painting.
A big part of this was clearing out the hobby room which had been used as a storage room and was piled high with boxes and other stuff, so it was not the kind of place I wanted to be in.
I got the room cleared and reorganised my painting setup so it’s all fresh and ready to go.
I’m hoping to get more time to paint going forward, as I’ve really missed it. Building and painting scale miniatures has always been a primary source of calm for me, helping to take my mind off things and de-stress. So it’s kinda ironic that stress and all of the things that come with it, has been the reason I’ve not been able to paint, and it created a sort of spiral which I was finding it very difficult to escape from.
Hopefully 2025 will be a smoother ride.
Glad to be back and hopefully I’ll have some stuff to share soon!
Happy Hobbying
Dave

I completed the fantasy barn based on the "Modelling Workshop" article in White Dwarf 140, August 1991. The structure is foamcore covered with craft wood sticks and coffee stirrers, based on matboard with sand and pebbles, painted with inexpensive craft paints. To keep with the 1991 theme I used simple wood turned barrels from a craft store and carved some lines to suggest staves, instead of using 3D printed models. The basing includes the same types of Woodland Scenics ground foam flocking I would have used in 1991. My one concession to more modern materials was to add a variety of premade static grass tufts.
This project started as a community challenge from the Summon Lesser Maker channel, one of the YouTubers keeping Mordheim alive online.

“The nonbelievers will say it’s just pareidolia. There aren’t faces in the sky, the world isn’t glowing with energy, there aren’t fractals in everything. They’re wrong of course, they just haven’t looked close enough yet.”
