I will reiterate, to me and on this blog, Saavik is still and always will be Spock's daughter and protege. I always pick and chose canon, so I choose Spirk and not that weird romance between her and Spock.
The Vulcan dude in the back in the Unification short film wasn't named, and while behind the scenes interviews would have him be the son conceived from Spock's Pon Farr on genesis, I'm staying with Nimoy on that one and not going in that direction.
On the other hand, the soft look on Jim's face when he recognized Saavik was also so very parental to me, in a "my kid is grown" type of way.
TLD:R - Saavik is still Spock's daughter to me

For me they have always been canon, I have written acedemic papers on what canon actually is, given lectures and done panels on fanon and literature analysis in fiction. I don’t need them to “be canon”
But when it comes to this ship- it’s decades of history, of actions that are said to mean something and us being asked to not interpret in that way. To me this isn’t spirk being canon- it’s a punctuation on their story, their bond and everything that has meant through the years, both to them as people in the Star Trek world, and as characters in a narrative that have effected the real world and the people in it.
They ended together, side by side, hand in hand. The only way they should end. And something we had to wait years for.
The fact that they died without the other was something that haunted me and I know a lot of other Star Trek fans. But here they are, together at the end.
This isn’t them “becoming canon”. This the the last page of their book, finally completed.
i feel like some people are fundamentally misunderstanding why we're so excited by this
to me, it's not for us, the shippers. it's for them, jim and spock.
for 30 years, their story ended with them being separated - jim dying alone in an unsatisfying (to most) way, and spock being on his own for 100+ years while all his friends and family around him die.
and now we know that they weren't alone in the end, the universe or whatever force it was brought them back together.

"You have never faced a death" is possibly the most patently insane thing possible to say to James T. Kirk, who has
survived a famine and genocide at age 13, in which over 4000 people died
survived an attack on the Farragut which killed half the crew, including a captain who he cared about, and which he blamed himself for failing to stop
been forced to kill Gary Mitchell, an old friend of his
lost numerous lovers, including a woman carrying his child, and including some he was at least partially responsible for the deaths of
arrived too late to save the lives of his brother and sister-in-law
lost too many crewmembers to count, and you know he held himself personally responsible for each and every one of those
probably more that I'm forgetting about
and then Spock dies, and Kirk fucking AGREES.
He says, yes, you're right. I haven't faced death. Not like this.
Not like this.
All of those deaths he's lived through, and blamed himself for? You're telling me that none of them mean as much to him as the death of Spock? And you want me to read this as. what. Normal friend things?? When he calls Spock the more noble half of his soul?? And says that Spock's katra is his responsibility, just as much as if it were his own???
And what if I screamed??!???

Would you lose everything for a chance to see him again ?
It's up as a print on my inprint <3 (did my best, but inprint is really annoying with vertical prints-)

[COMMISSION] - [PRINT]
Quick star trek illustration because I thought about the third movie again- delicious angst 9/10 (minus one for the unnecessary cringey pon farr scene, come on man he was 8 like two hours ago)

I just tagged this as 'creepy' but it was not... I was sitting on the lab floor and crying through the whole thing. It's also not generative media, but this new de-aging technology. Shatner plays Kirk.
Here is the video:
youtube
WHY AREN'T WE TALKING ABOUT THIS??
The tag should be trending right now. Everyone freak out like I am right now.

"I didn't realize this moment took place in the distant future. And so there I was, looking at myself in the mirror. It's hard to explain. I just remember thinking 'Oh my god Saavik. Saavik lived a good life. This woman lived a good life, she had purpose. Her life had meaning' it's like life had been good to this character."

This is one of the greatest things ever. Walk around every single version of the U.S.S. Enterprise in photorealistic 3D in your browser, from the Roddenberry Archive. On a phone you just see wraparound 3D pics. On a PC or laptop you get the full 3D interactive experience. They NEED to make this VR compatible, it'll be beyond words.
There are more Enterprises here than Tumblr will allow me photos of, and more will likely be added.
Tumblr media
Here's the TOS Enterprise, which appears in several incarnations ("The Cage", "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and TOS proper as well as TAS with the second turbolift!), has the correct original graphics and is perfect.
Tumblr media
This is the bridge from the unmade Star Trek: Phase II series (whose pilot episode "In Thy Image" was rewritten to become Star Trek: The Motion Picture), with it's legendary big comfy command sofa seat and tactical display bubble!
Tumblr media
The Motion Picture, such an accurate recreation that there's even a very faint flicker on the rear-projection animated screens as seen in the movie.
Tumblr media
Enterprise NX-01, looking exactly as it did in "Broken Bow"
Tumblr media
Recognise this? It's the briefing room of Discovery season 2's version of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Although at the front of the saucer on the "real" ship, here it's off the second bridge door which may well be where the set was IRL.
Tumblr media
I wasn't expecting modern Trek to be represented equally as the originals in this project, but it is. This is the Enterprise from Strange New Worlds, with Pike's Ready Room located just off the bridge.
Tumblr media
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. My favourite version of the classic bridge, as a kid I drew all these control panels and stuck them on my bedroom walls. And now I can look around and look at them all close-up! They've even replicated the noticable TVs stuffed into the panels for the more complex animated screens.
Tumblr media
The Enterprise-C bridge from "Yesterday's Enterprise". This one has always fascinated me, being a low-budget TV set (formerly the Enterprise-D battle bridge, originally built from the rain-damaged TMP set's back wall and redressed endlessly though TNG) representing TNG's immediate predecessor. In the episode they mostly shoot the back wall and imply the consoles make a huge circle, but here you can see the set's real dimensions and the weirdness of the classic movie helm/nav console in front of the TNG con/ops panels. I love it.
Tumblr media
You know how much I love the Kelvin movies, so seeing this was amazing. For some reason the consoles don't have their screens lit (hopefully this'll be fixed soon), but you can see the saucer under the window and it's shiny and amazing.
Tumblr media
The last thing I expected was the U.S.S. Titan-A/Enterprise-G bridge, but it's here. And the lights are on.
Other bridges available to explore which I'm out of pictures to show: The Enterprise-D (of course), Enterprise XCV-330 (the ringship, based on concept art for the unmade non-Trek series "Starship"), the Planet of the Titans U.S.S. Enterprise (again, based on concept art for a cool multi-levelled set) and the "launch" U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 (based on the very first piece of TOS bridge set concept art), the Enterprise-E, the Enterprise-F (seen on viewscreen for all of 2 minutes in Picard) and the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656!
Take a bow lads, you've done good. Now just add VR support!
That link again.
