When you talk to someone and their face starts to look like this

yeah, those type of shots were really popular with soap operas as a cost and time cutting masseur. It's a great way to show two faces and two reactions without having to film the scene more than once, which is necessary when you are shooting on a very tight budget and schedule.

I noticed this shoot appears a lot in Voy, and less so in other ST shows of the same era (DS9, especially) . I don't know if this show was filmed on a tighter budget/schedule but IMO this kind of framing of the shots gives the show a "soapy" vibe, that we have less off in other ST (in terms of shooting style).

Why? Well, it's totally only a guess, but this show had the first woman captain as it's lead character, soaps were aimed towards women, and it might be another way to appeal to them give it a "woman's touch" if you will. It also gives it a bit of a campy-fun vibe that doesn't take itself too seriously, which does not always alighn with the script.

It's an interesting choice.

One thing that would make me bonkers about living on Voyager is how they constantly engage in conversation with people while turning their backs to them or walking behind them.

I know this a framing device to create a good shot for tv but people doing this to me in real life drives me up the wall.
