Bruce will just come home from a long day of work. He's tired and just wants a nice, quiet evening, but he's subconsciously psyching himself up to prepare himself for the chaos he'll witness once he enters the manor

but then Jason's just quietly doing his own thing, maybe even helping Alfred with some chores, reading, or just lounging about in the manor. In general, just causing no trouble and Bruce just turns to Alfred, all worried like, "Is he sick? I don't think children are supposed to behave this way."

I can't find it now but there's a post about suspension of disbelief and how it's broken when the story starts trying to excuse it. "character gets knocked unconscious for hours but there's no further issues from this" okay 👍 "and actually this makes perfect sense because of this and that" um no it doesn't why are you lying to me. like i am willing to ignore the holes and the discrepancies!! all you need to do is let me and not bring unnecessary attention to it!!!

The Wayne Manor study was cold, despite the fire burning in the hearth. Bruce stood by the window, staring out at the snow-dusted gardens. Dick stormed in, his anger palpable, the door slamming shut behind him.

“You think this interview is going to fix anything?” Dick snapped, his voice sharp and accusatory.

Bruce didn’t turn around. “It’s not about fixing things. It’s about giving Jason the respect he deserves.”

Dick scoffed, pacing. “Respect? You want to give him respect now? After putting him in a position that got him killed?”

Bruce’s shoulders stiffened, but he remained silent.

Dick’s anger boiled over. “You made him pick up that mantle, Bruce! You let him get involved in your war, and it got him killed! He wasn’t ready for any of it. He was just trying to live up to your impossible standards.”

“I didn’t make him do anything,” Bruce said quietly, still not turning to face Dick. “Jason made his own decisions.”

Dick slammed his fist on the desk. “Don’t do that! Don’t act like this is some noble tragedy where Jason’s choices were all his own. He was a kid. A stubborn, angry, reckless kid who wanted nothing more than to prove himself to you. And you let him!”

Bruce finally turned, his face lined with exhaustion and guilt. “You think I don’t blame myself? Every decision I made, every moment I wasn’t there to stop it—I think about it constantly. I failed him, Dick. I know that."

Dick’s voice dropped, the anger giving way to raw pain. “You didn’t just fail him, Bruce. You failed me.”

The words hung in the air like a physical blow. Bruce’s mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.

“I trusted you to protect him,” Dick continued, his voice shaking. “I thought you learned from everything we went through. But you made the same mistakes. And now Jason’s gone because of it.”

Bruce turned back to the window, his voice barely audible. “I thought I could save him. I thought I was giving him a better life.”

Dick took a step back, his anger simmering beneath the surface. “Well, you didn’t. And now you’re dragging yourself in front of Gotham to pretend like this will make things better. But it won’t. Nothing will.”

Bruce didn’t respond. The only sound in the room was the crackling of the fire. Finally, Dick turned and walked out, leaving Bruce alone with his guilt.

The studio was unnaturally quiet as Bruce sat across from the reporter. The lights were harsh, casting deep shadows on his face.

“Mr. Wayne,” the reporter began, her voice gentle, “the loss of Jason Todd has left Gotham in mourning. How are you handling this tragedy?”

Bruce took a long pause before answering, his voice low and measured. “Jason was… a son to me. Losing him is the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. There are no words for that kind of pain.”

The reporter nodded sympathetically. “Can you tell us about Jason? What was he like?"

Bruce’s lips twitched into a faint, bittersweet smile. “Jason was…complicated. He was stubborn, always pushing boundaries, always asking questions. But that’s what made him special. He never accepted things as they were—he always wanted to make them better. He had a sharp mind, a quick wit, and a fierce determination to prove himself.”

Jason, grinning as he leaned against the Batmobile, grease smudged on his face. “Told you I could fix it faster than Alfred,” he’d said with that cocky smirk.

Bruce blinked, pushing the memory away. “He wasn’t perfect, but he was good. And he deserved more than what he got.”

The reporter’s tone turned cautious. “There’s been speculation that Jason’s proximity to you and your high-profile life may have contributed to his death. How do you respond to that?”

Bruce’s expression hardened. “Jason came into my life because I wanted to give him a chance—a real chance at a future. He deserved to feel safe, to have opportunities he’d never had before. If people want to blame someone for what happened, they can blame me. I made the choices that put him in harm’s way. And I’ll carry that responsibility for the rest of my life.”

The reporter’s voice softened. “What do you want Gotham to remember about Jason?”

Bruce’s voice faltered, his face blank. “Jason was… just a kid. He wasn’t perfect, but he tried. He deserved to grow up, to figure out who he wanted to be. I want people to remember that he mattered. That he was loved.”

"If there was something you'd say to jason now, what would it be?"

“There was a life before you, Jason,” he said aloud, his voice quiet and hoarse. “And then there was life with you. But for some reason, I never thought there would be an after you.”

He closed his eyes, the weight of those words pressing down on him. “But here it is. And I’m in it. I’ll be in it forever. I dont know how I'll go from here on”

"I'm sure he'd want you to move on" the interviewer smiled gently

Jason, standing in the kitchen, grinning triumphantly as he held up a burnt lasagna. “Alfred said I couldn’t cook. Joke’s on him—it’s technically edible!"

Bruce’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “He had this way of… making you believe anything was possible, even when you knew better. He made the world feel bigger somehow.”

Dick Grayson sat forward in his chair, his hands clasped tightly. The grief in his expression was raw and unfiltered.

“Thank you for being here, Dick,” the reporter began. “Jason Todd’s death has been a tragedy felt across Gotham. How are you coping?”

Dick exhaled sharply, his jaw tightening. “I’m not. Jason wasn’t just some kid I knew—he was my brother. Losing him feels like… like losing a part of myself.”

The reporter nodded. “What was your relationship like with Jason?”

A faint smile flickered across Dick’s face, tinged with sadness. “It was complicated. We argued a lot. He was stubborn, always trying to prove himself. But that’s what made him… Jason. He didn’t back down, even when he probably should have. He cared about people, even if he didn’t always show it. He had so much potential.”

Jason, laughing as he raced him across the rooftops. “Come on, dickhead, keep up!” he’d shouted, his voice full of that youthful arrogance.

Dick’s smile faded. “But he never got the chance to figure it all out.”

“What do you want people to remember about Jason?”

Dick’s voice softened, his eyes glistened “Jason was just a kid trying to find his place in the world. He deserved so much more than what he got. I want people to remember that he mattered. That he was loved.”

The reporter asked, “What would you say to Jason now if you could?”

Dick’s voice cracked, his composure slipping. “I’d tell him I’m sorry. That I was too hard on him. That I didn’t mean half the things I said. And that… I loved him. I really did.”

Jason tackling him during a training session, both of them laughing as they tumbled to the ground. “Not bad for the new guy, huh?” Jason had teased, his grin infectious.

“Not bad,” Dick had admitted, ruffling his hair.

Dick found Bruce waiting outside the studio, leaning against the car. The two stared at each other for a long moment.

“You heard it all, didn’t you?” Dick sighed

Bruce nodded. “You did good.”

Dick’s anger flared again. “Don’t patronize me, Bruce. I’m not doing this for you.”

Bruce’s expression darkened. “I know that.”

“Do you?” Dick stepped closer, his voice rising. “Because sometimes, it feels like all of this is still about you. Your guilt. Your pain. Meanwhile, Jason’s the one who’s gone. And we’re the ones left trying to make sense of it.”

Bruce looked away, his voice quiet. “I’m trying to do what’s right.”

Dick shook his head, the anger giving way to exhaustion. “Yeah, well, maybe you should’ve thought about that before putting Jason in the crossfire.”

The two stood in silence before Dick finally turned to walk away. “I hope you figure it out, Bruce. For his sake.”

Dick sat alone in his apartment, His hands trembled as he stared at an old photograph of Jason. It was from one of Alfred’s rare attempts to capture the family at peace—Jason mid-laugh, trying to swat away Dick’s hand, messing with his hair.

He clenched the photo tighter, the edges biting into his palm.

They’d been in the Batcave, the tension between them boiling over after another mission. Jason leaned against the Batcomputer, arms crossed, his expression defiant.

“You think you’re so much better than me, don’t you?” Jason snapped. “Just because you were the first. Golden Boy Grayson.”

“That’s not what this is about,” Dick shot back, his voice sharp. “You don’t listen, Jason. You charge in without thinking, and one day, it’s going to get you killed.”

Jason rolled his eyes. “Right, because you never made mistakes. Spare me the lecture.”

Dick’s temper flared. “This isn’t about me! I’m trying to keep you alive, you idiot!”

Jason smirked, his usual defiance masking the hurt in his eyes. “Don’t worry, Dick. I’ll make sure not to ruin your perfect record.”

He'd stormed out, leaving Dick standing there, fists clenched.

Dick’s hand trembled as he brought the photo closer. “I should’ve apologized. I should’ve told you that I didn’t mean it, that I was just scared for you. But now… now I’ll never get the chance.”

He swallowed hard, tears streaking down his face. “You weren’t supposed to go, Jay. I wasn’t ready to lose you. Not like this.”

the answer is... maybe??? idk what Jason would have done if he was brought into the fight under different circumstances, but he did choose to work with Joker B of his own free will (and agreed pretty quickly, though that might be more because the [supposed] plan was to kill Joker A) (and also bc Joker B has decided he's not the Joker after all and that he needs to kill Joker A after which I guess Joker B would... die? kill himself? i think? idk man) and he actually set up a distraction with Rose to prevent Bruce from interfering (bc I'd imagine Bruce wouldn't want him to kill Joker A 😒)

(side note: lost my shit laughing here at the entourage of actual bats following the batmobile)

(btw that kid with Rose up there ^ was part of Joker B's group and Jason had the condition that the kid be uninvolved if Joker B wanted Jason's help)

(that's why Rose has the kid with her, so Batman can help the kid)

ANYWAYS so Jason is at the fight because he wants to be/he has a chance to kill a Joker/Joker B gassed him into not being paralyzed by fear, so depending on which motivation you think is right then one could argue that it's Bruce's fault he's involved.

BUT ANWAYS.... the set-up here is: Joker B is driving a train that will (unbeknownst to Jason) crash into Gotham and cause a big boom. It's a trap to lure in Joker A - who wants to kill Joker B because there must only be one Joker, blah blah - and Joker A comes swooping in on a dirigible/blimp (filled with bombs) to blow up the train.

A big fight between them and the henchmen ensues, Jason gets Joker A at gunpoint, and then Joker B reveals the true plan, and Jason gets booted out of the conductor's car.

(btw i'm omitting panels that are unnecessary to my narration, there's more in-between chatter that makes the story flow better)

so Jason decides to go for the blimp and steals Killer Moth's suit-wings-jetpack-thing (no idea what it really is) to get there, and hijacks the blimp. He tries to call for Batgirl (Stephanie atm) and gets Batman instead, and outright tells Bruce that he chose to do this, and also that they need to stop the gas in the train and the bombs in the blimp somehow. But there's no way to do either in a way where the gas won't blow into the city anyway...

And so Jason's solution is...

a big explosion that eats up the gas with the bombs in the blimp.

(genuinely a miracle he's not dead just from that lmao)

And there's an argument to be made that, uh, Jason... drowned. And was dead. For a pretty solid amount of time.

and Rose resuscitates him!

Rose is a miracle-worker apparently lol

A N Y W A Y S the point is, yeah Bruce could be held responsible for part of this if you look at it a certain way. I definitely think Jason's plan of blowing up the ship he was on by crashing into something in order to save people is very reminiscent of a certain other time.....

[ID: four photos to draw loose parallels. In the first one, from Batgirl #3, Bruce Wayne is talking to Cassandra Cain as they're both in their respective costumes. He looks away from her as he struggles to explain the mutual drive they share about protecting anyone's life. “I.. don't quite know how to say this. You and I... With what we do... What's at stake... We can't fail. Others... The second photo is from Batgirl #4 after Cass had her brain altered without her consent by a man with psychic powers. Now, she's able to understand English and think in it, despite being unable to speak it yet. She slowly muses, ‘So I can... Hear myself... Think. And I can... Understand you. Thinking or talking. All the words... make sense now.’

The third and forth photos are from Batgirl #5. In them, Cass has stopped the man from getting shot and killed but the criminal still fired their gun. We see the bullet hole is dangerously close to the cowering man. He rushes to thank her and explain what happened but Cass continues to stare at the hole in the wall. Despite her cowl, we can see she's obviously distressed at not being able to protect the man's life even more securely. Her mind goes to the worst case scenario as she blames herself despite it being due to her ability to read body language has been taken from her. She gravely thinks, ‘Inches. Missed him by inches. Inches away from dying. Because I couldn't do what I do.’ END ID]

i realized that not everyone might know what a rheostat is so this is a good opportunity for me to info dump

so a rheostat is a type of analog (ie. not digital, ie. a continuous curve whereas digital is a bunch of high to low jumps with no inbetween) dimming that was invented for early incandescent dimming (of course now with LED lights we need a much more sophisticated system of dimming, as LEDs tend to flicker really badly if using this kind of dimming)

so the way this works is as in the diagram but ill word it out here for funsies: power from the wall come in through terminal A, and flows through a coil of wire (or other resistive material) as the current flows down to the bottom of the coil, the electrons are tired of swimming so far down so there is less current at the bottom than there is at the top

so as the slider moves from the top of the coil to the bottom, there is progressively less and less electricity to flow out from the slider out through terminal C onto our imaginary lightbulb

if there is less electricity, the lightbulb doesn't turn on as much, making it dimmer

ie duke is literally just turning the sun down a lil bit

I have questions on the blood blossom au?

I was wondering what mobility aids Danny uses, how does the stages for the blood blossom poisoning work and what he wears and do as nightingale.

Sorry if they're too many questions I was curious. Also your so Cool

oh you're totally fine! i love getting questions. as for danny's mobility aids, i was thinking that he has like, three main mobility aids he uses. He has a cane, arm crutches, and a wheelchair, and he swaps between them depending on his mobility and pain. OH he also wears compression gloves and socks.

as for the blood blossom stages, i'll keep it pretty loose and nebulous since making the stages too detailed will just make it harder for me to write it lmao, gotta give myself that creative wiggle room. But there's probably like, three... four? main stages?

The first one being when it's in its neutralized, semi-dormant state after receiving an (upgraded) antidote. In that stage, Danny's chronic pain is at its most manageable. He starts regaining muscle mass, an appetite, he has more energy. His immune system is pretty shot because its busy fighting off the blood blossom, but he's still essentially at his healthiest.

Stage two of the blood blossom poisoning is when the 'antidote'/'neutralizer'/idk medicine because calling it an antidote isnt super accurate, starts breaking down and loosing its efficacy. At first it feels like just a bad pain day from stage one, but over time it starts becoming more insistent and the pain is in places it normally wouldn't, or the sensation is different. Danny's health starts taking a dip and he begins losing muscle mass. He starts feeling congested the same way you do when you just get out of a bad cold: where you're technically fine, but you're still getting coughing fits.

Stage three is when he starts actively.... bleeding. The pain has upped the ante and has now spread through his entire body, he's having frequent, wet, coughing fits. He's nauseous, has a pounding headache that's quickly becoming a migraine, and shaking with effort to stay standing. This is where his nose starts bleeding and his coughing takes on a red color. He's getting pale, having heat flashes, and overall looks like a kid who was poisoned with a cannibalistic blood toxin.

Stage four is the last stage, and throughout it Danny is officially delirious from both blood loss and pain. He's extremely nauseous, having trouble comprehending what's around him, and is now spitting up blood. He's in so much pain that he's alternating between feeling numb to it and then NOT feeling numb to it, and overall is having trouble moving his body. At stage four he's in a high-risk emotional state, which is bad because he's at risk of waking up his dormant ghost core, and then it's an immediate game over for him.

Danny was at the beginning of stage 4 when he found Bruce. Lucky him!

As for Nightingale! I know I said in the original post reblogs that he'd be running around with Bruce, but that was more of a conversational, 'talking about an au for fun' thing rather than something I'd use in a fic. So I can't see him running around with Bruce as Nightingale in the slightest, not only because of the blood blossom stuff, but also because its just not in line with how I'm writing Danny in LATN.***

In fic, Danny's going to be taking on a more backseat/support role as Nightingale, rather than a field vigilante like Batman or Robin. He's more of an eyes-in-the-sky type kinda like how Barb is, who only goes out in the city if he feels the need to deliver something to Bruce directly, or if he thinks Bruce needs backup. He's "the emergency backup" as I like to call it, and if he does go out, he typically sticks to ranged fighting and sabotage.

He also likes to help make gadgets for Bruce to use, and helps with cases when he can. His input becomes helpful when Gotham's gimmick villains start popping up, as he has experience with this type of crazed clownery, while Bruce does not.

As for what he wears! The first time he goes out as Nightingale was not intentional, it was a spur of the moment thing. So Nightingale's first 'suit' is just a thrown together disguise that includes:

1. the comically large hoodie Danny stole from Bruce because it fucken COLD in the cave and his circulation is shit.

2. his compression gloves

3. a light, blue-ish gray scarf that was conveniently lying around because again, it fucken COLD. This is because Danny doesn't have a mask and needs something to hide his face with. 4. the black face paint stuff bruce keeps lying around that he smears over the upper half of his face like a makeshift mask. Once it becomes evident that this is going to be a 'thing', bruce gets a proper suit made for him. I have a concept drawing made way back in the reblogs of the original post, but im just going to link you to fanart that made friend Crow made because its much better quality. Danny wears the suit while he's in the cave just in case he needs to go out and help Bruce, as well as that same hoodie.

***TL;DW: while Danny doesn't regret saving people in Amity and he'd do it again, he hated ghost fighting and wanted nothing more than to be normal. He felt that he was the only person who could fight back against the ghosts, and as a result he was left horrifically traumatized, without a proper support system, and cut off from most everybody else because he didn't know how to balance his hero life and his civilian life.

He wouldn't return to frontline hero work even if he could, not unless he felt his particular skillset needed him to.

Overall, for Danny, Phantom isn't the name of a hero, its just the name of a dead kid. And the dead deserve to rest in peace.

I always wondered what your thoughts on modern Tim. You mostly write from the post crisis era (which I assume is what you prefer) but is that out of complete dislike of the current comics or some mix feelings. I’m sorry for bothering you I’m just really curious.

I wouldn't say that I completely dislike current comics. In terms of Tim-related comics, there are some parts I've really enjoyed! For example, the Batman Volume 3 arcs from Failsafe through #149 had Tim content that I liked. It's also nice to see him be canonically recognized as queer, though whether or not that's canon was never going to stop me from writing what I want 😂 A lot of what I disliked about post-Flashpoint Tim was his characterization in the New 52. I felt like they cheapened his character and undercut all the hard work he had done. But they also made a few unusual characterization choices with other characters, so he's not alone in that. My perception of modern Tim improved in the Rebirth era, after Lonely Place of Living restored some of his backstory to the canon timeline. So, as it currently stands, I don't have a major issue with the modern comics to the point where I won't read them. There are a few exceptions; like, reading Tim Drake: Robin was more than enough for me because I feel like they made Tim very incompetent in it and also timbern isnt' my thing. Additionally, I do think that DC defanged a lot of the Bats' interpersonal drama in the modern era, which makes me less interested in writing anything for the current characters. I'm also not a huge fan of the big happy family portrayal of the Bats (which is a bit of an exaggeration, but the thing with all of them moving into a new mansion together was uh. not my thing), so a lot of the modern stuff doesn't really do it for me. Another part of my reluctance to write for modern Tim is that I've lost the plot in terms of what's actually happening in comics. To be fair, this is because I don't keep up with them. If I did read them, I could probably find some things that I wanted to write about? But I haven't exhausted what I want to write about in the post-crisis era, and since I generally find that era more interesting, it tends to take priority. I'm also a little unsure what DC is doing with Tim regarding being the perpetual Schrodinger's Robin. Sometimes he's Robin, sometimes he isn't. In the N52, saying that he decided to become Red Robin out of respect for Jason was a cop out, especially given the post-crisis reasons for the Red Robin switch. I think that's been retconned now? But I do wish that DC would have him branch out and go through his own transformation into a new hero name that's his own. Though when they tried to do that with the whole "Drake" thing, I don't think it was executed very well, so maybe I'm just a hater lol

The thing I really liked about post-crisis was the arc of Tim coming into his own. When he eventually crashes out in Red Robin, it's clear how far he's come and how good he's gotten at what he does. I would have liked to see where they took his arc from there, and I would have liked him to finally be older than 17 (cue that joke about DC keeping Tim the same age and aging Damian up to the point where Damian will eventually be older than him). While the post-flashpoint content is a continuation, it feels like Tim's been dialed back to his pre-Red Robin characterization. Which probably makes sense since I don't feel like the emotionally impetus of the RR arc was actually resolved. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with all of that, and I understand that the status quo is somewhat necessary to make comics work, but it gets frustrating after a while. On a more petty note, a lot of my writing tends to revolve around Dick and Tim. In the post-crisis era, they had a lot of interactions. That doesn't feel like it's the case today? There are a couple like Titans Bloodpact and Nightwing Leaping into the Light, but if anyone has any other modern Dick & Tim interactions that they enjoyed, recs would be appreciated!
